“I think about how El and I should’ve stayed broken up that summer. How different things could’ve been for everyone if I just knew when to quit.”
“When to quit what?”
“Pretending to be someone I’m not.”
Will straightened. His eyes grew darker, and he shifted on the floor, scooting closer. “And who are you, Mike?”
Mike let out a shaky breath, his hands rubbing up and down on his thighs. He felt the heat of the moment take over him, his palms breaking out in a small sweat.
“Yours,” he whispered, scooting closer. “I think I’ve always been yours.”

“Well, I’ve been thinking, right?”
Will looks up, but Mike isn’t looking back at him. He’s picking at a loose thread on the couch cushion. “What, about girls?”
“No,” Mike shakes his head, “about boys."
Will nearly chokes on his tongue. “You’ve been thinking about boys?”

“Will, how is it possible that you cool things off for Mike without even being there?”
“What? I don’t—” he starts.
“Yeah, you’re like his cooler,” Dustin adds. “When you don’t come out with us, Mike just sits at the bar and mopes.”
“I do not!” Mike shouts.
“And when you do come out with us,” he continues. “Mike spends half the night checking on you. And he’ll tell whatever girl he’s talking to that he needs to go ‘check on his roommate,’ and he ditches her.”
“Will, don’t take this the wrong way, but you’ve totally been cockblocking Mike without even doing anything,” Lucas teases.
“Come on, don’t be a dick, Lucas,” Mike grumbles.
