___________Three years ago, Ryland Grace and Rock were on their way to one of Erids moons, when they somehow ended up in a universe without stars.
They got picked up by an organisation called the COI.
Working as a scientist and engineer for the COI, Rocky and Grace are now, three years later, tasked with finding out what happened to The convict who survived the Blood ocean.(Tags concerning triggers are mentioned at the beginning of each chapter containing said tags. A short summary of the chapters is at the end for those who like to skip)

Calling whatever Simon must have looked like when he was unconscious was an understatement.

When Rocky spots a human floating aimlessly among the stars in a submarine, Ryland gets his hopes up. The two might have settled into some bare minimum mutual trust, but Ryland wants so much more, and little does he know that Simon is just as lonely and desperate as he is.

Simon wished he could reach out, to find his angel, to soothe the sadness in his voice. He could almost feel the warmth of the angel’s skin, the warmth of his salvation.
But even the mere thought of touching his angel brought back that tightness in his chest, reminding him pointedly of why the angel had begun to cry in the first place; feeling, seeing, knowing of his sins. How could he possibly comfort this perfect angel, when he himself was the cause for his distress?
And then, just as Simon’s thoughts started another downward spiral towards the depths of crimson, he felt the angel’s fingers brush across his cheek, ripping him from the cruel tendrils of the blood ocean and bringing him to whatever heaven this must be.
The touch was so tender, so kind, that it shocked Simon, the chill of his angel’s fingers going straight to his core like a gulp of cool water after a hike through the blazing desert. What could he possibly do to deserve such gentility? To deserve this angel? What had his mother’s ghost bartered with, to get him here?
“I’ll let you rest,” the angel seemed to whisper, his voice dripping with something that sounded like fondness.

It was just a routine trip in the Hail Mary. Check the status of the astrophage effecting Erid's sun. Release more taumoeba if necessary. Document anything new to report back to the scientists on Erid. Then go home and compare notes to ensure their monitoring equipment was still accurate.
Grace and Rocky had done it a couple times. It had scared Grace at first -- going back into space, back into the ship that had been his prison for so many years of his life. But it had become such routine at this point that it hardly bothered him anymore. The taumoeba was working, the sun was recovering, and after this trip the Eridian scientists would have all the data they needed. Once they returned, he would never have to board the Hail Mary again. He could finally rest.
But a flash of blinding light stops them on their return voyage. Minutes later, the ping of a distress signal rings through the ship.
Someone else is out there.
OR
Grace and Rocky find Simon stranded in space after an entity in the blood ocean hears his desperate cries and transports him to... wherever he is now. Simon thinks he is dead. Grace and Rocky don't know WHAT he is.

Simon has to come to terms with a lot of things very quickly once they approached Erid, a major setback for sure, but anything to bring Grace back from the brink of death is a sacrifice he will make in a heartbeat. Rocky is stuck in-between helping Simon handle the surge of Eridians, his own mate especially, coming in and out of the Hail Marry to conduct their studies for the humans' best chances at survival, along with aiding in building them a lab and home on Erid's surface, and a means for bringing the Taumeba to their new planet. Grace... Well Grace is barely lucid as he is poked, prodded, and kept alive by Armondo as he awaits his first successful dose of nutrients along with a very long road to recovery. This brings in Adrian, Rocky's mate, a head molecular scientist. Who although may have dreamed of alien contact other than that blasted Astrophage, was not prepared for it to come in such a troubling, harsh reality of frail, leaky, space blobs with very different issues she has to navigate very, VERY delicately. Something that is in short supply in such a crisis between both the humans and the panicked Eridani colleagues who care not to spend precious time learning the humans.
