Colt had known it was bad when Holly had texted, she rarely reached out to them about things regarding her father nowadays. He just hadn’t expect just how bad it turned out to be. Seeing his older brother almost submerged in the bathtub was a worrying sight after all. He’d known that Holland often hid away when in pain, but he hated seeing him in such a state.
After sitting there, and watching, for a few minutes longer he finally left the room. Deciding his brother needed rest, he’d come and watch over the man periodically anyway. Or well, he and Ryland would take it in turns.
OR: on the anniversary of his wife’s death, Holland March relapses. But, his brothers are always around to help.

“I got you. My number one since kindergarten.” Nate holds out a fist, and Jenny bumps it, rolling her eyes.

“I’m trying to be sensitive here. Lay off, officers.” He runs a hand through his hair but stops when glitter sprinkles out of it. He tries to brush it off.
“Arts and crafts fool,” Francis murmurs.
Teddy says, “I’m gonna have to vacuum after you leave.”
Absolute shitheads.
But then again, they’re his shitheads.

“What are you going to do at 1 AM? State your business,” Teddy drills. Francis moves next to him, cornering Nate.
“We know you’re serious about something when you have a phone alarm. You never give a shit about being on time,” Francis says.

It must suck to lose that.
So Nate pats Francis’s back twice.
Thump.
Thump.
It echoes in the room, and Nate retracts his hand back into his lap.
Roll the end credits. Please.
Francis looks at him in horror. Teddy buries his face in his hands.
Then, Francis begins to laugh.
Relieved, Nate follows suit, and Teddy does as well.

“What do you want me to say?” Nate says hoarsely.
To that, Francis glowers, straightening the coffee table so it’s aligned in the direction of the floor panels, something he’s done since they were kids.
“You pretend with me. All. The time,” Francis decides. “You don’t talk to me, you just give me the right answer so I get off your ass.”
“Yeah, genius. Correct.”
“Why? What does it solve?” Francis argues. “You just add to the problems you already have.”

“Stop.” Francis almost shouts. “I don’t need that. I need to have an actual conversation with you, Nate.”
That makes Nate laugh again. “This is an intervention. Not a conversation.”
“Because you make it one. Because I have to fight for every piece of information about you,” Francis accuses, reeling his volume down. “So make it easy on me. What did I also do?”

In a last-ditch attempt, Nate defers to Francis, who’s shaking his head.
At least Nate tried.
Disappointed, Nate stands up. He pulls both Teddy’s and Francis’s backpacks from behind the couch, dumping them onto the coffee table, avoiding the two mugs of cold coffee (no sugar for Teddy, creamer instead of milk for Francis).
Francis’s head snaps up, on his feet in an instant. “How did you get those?”
Nate waves him off. “Your parents. I thought you guys would cave in.”

At some point during the drive, Frank mumbled some incoherent apology for “bothering her” and hung up, making her heart start racing and making her break just a few traffic laws.
As she’s driving down the road towards Langdon’s location, it begins to rain. Not a soft drizzle or small, random droplets. It’s as if someone ripped a hole in the clouds. Her visibility goes from 100% to 20% in five seconds and all she can make out is the rainwater streaming down her windshield.
“Shit,” she mumbles to herself as she parks her car on the side of the road. As she gets out she grabs her emergency bag, containing a Narcan kit.
Just in case.
