"Sure?" Kaidan said, cocking his head. "You know I'm enjoying the right to sit here and savor that no one is going to tell me to rush off, just like you are."
Shepard blinked, processing the words, and his eyes narrowed. This did not mean anything about his mood. Shepard in the morning and Shepard the rest of the time were simply two completely different people. "You don't drink more than one cup unless your head hurts," Shepard said at last, in the tone of a man working out differential calculus in his head. Again, that meant nothing about his mood. He simply couldn't be asked for anything more complicated at the moment.
Kaidan leaned back in his seat, feeling the same strange prickle he had when Thane offered to sweep up. He felt—watched—and for some reason, it made him shift his weight in his chair. "My head doesn't hurt."
Shepard turned that bleary, narrow-eyed look on him, taking another long drink of his coffee before he spoke. "Yet."

Garrus had set his things on the desk and she got up to greet him, kissed him, and he hadn’t fully been prepared for the relief he felt too.
The room had been cool and dark and they’d murmured to one another in those quiet hours before galactic standard declared it daytime in the middle of space. He remembers the way her voice trailed off, the gentle sound of even breathing that dragged out her sentences. He remembers wanting to stay up just a little longer, a stolen moment tucked away in her cabin.
Moments like now, where she talks about whatever show she managed to watch while she was under lockdown, head on his stomach and talking with her hands. She’s gotten him another pillow, something better contoured to his carapace, and he looks down at her with fondness and she pauses and then backtracks to explain a side plot she glossed over.
He thinks about asking her to be something official, if this isn’t already; it feels like it. So much of their relationship has been her making moves though, and he feels like it’s time he did.

Now, though, it fell away for a moment, and he sighed. “You saw Thane?” Kaidan nodded, and Shepard reached into his pocket and took out a pencil, a fresh one he hadn’t snapped in half or chewed to death. “I did ask him to keep an eye on you. I was worried someone might decide to finish the job, and—he’s good backup. I’m just surprised you actually saw him. He’s good at keeping to the shadows.”
Kaidan wanted to keep needling him, but he wasn’t doped up enough to be mad anymore.
No, be honest. He was too glad to have Shepard here, inches away, breathing the same air, to be mad anymore. “I notice you didn’t argue with the boyfriend line. Guess the gossip rags were right.”
Now Shepard looked away. Though he was smiling again, it had taken on a fixed, ragged edge. “Well, I didn’t want you to get worked up over it, but you are a little behind the times. Thane—Thane has things to take care of, and I can’t blame him for that.”
