When he passes the nearly-empty bottle Charles’ way, the other man grips his wrist, instead of the drink. He leans in, his voice like velvet.
“Take off your clothes.”
Arthur’s eyes blow wide.
“What?” Arthur curses himself at how he always responds to things with this much tact. Charles slides his hand up to grip Arthur’s wrist, stroking the pulse point under his thumb.
“That’s why you’re here, right?” Charles explains. “Do some extra chores around camp, smile a bit, get noticed, get rewarded?” Arthur pulls away, and Charles lets him go.
“Wait,” Arthur says, standing. Repeats it, “wait,” more for himself than for the other man. “I ain’t tryin’ to... buy you or whatever with good deeds or nothin’.” Charles frowns, just a bit. Like he’d just bitten down on a bit of bone in his stew.
“Then you’re not here for anything like that.” Charles says the question more as a statement. He’s still sitting, looking up at Arthur. The firelight makes his skin glow, molten amber across rich darkness.
“No, I-”
“Then you are? ”
“Christ, Charles would’ya let me think?!” Arthur snaps. He takes his hat off, pulls a hand through his hair, paces across the campsite. He pauses a few times, preparing to speak, before cursing and resuming his motions. Charles stays where he’s sat, save for grabbing the abandoned whiskey bottle and downing the last of it. Minutes pass and Arthur isn’t any more prepared for this conversation than he was earlier.
“I don’t,” Arthur takes a breath before continuing. “I don’t wanna be some quick tumble in a tent.” Charles leans on a fist, elbow on the crease of his knee. Eyes inquisitive. Open. “I don’t wanna wonder whether you even like this or not-”
