The effect is instant. Jaws drop. Eyes widen. A collective gasp ripples through the group.

You nod, suddenly self-conscious under their scrutiny. "A little," you lie, though you know your near flawless accent gives you away. You motion toward their armfuls of chips and bottled drinks. "Go ahead. She understands now."
For a moment, nobody moves. They just keep staring, as if you've pulled off a magic trick.
Then one of them (sharp eyes, catlike smile) steps forward, studying you with an intensity that makes your pulse stutter. He doesn't say anything, just tilts his head slightly, as if trying to figure out what you are.
Then he produces a few bills from his wallet to pay, placing them on the counter, maintaining eye contact with you.
You clear your throat again, heat rising in your cheeks. "Right. I'll just… go back to my fruit."

It’s his instincts and his voices who wake him up, as they are screaming wrong wrong wrong.
He is not alone.
There is a creature in his room. Techno blinks at the figure sitting on top of his blankets, right on the foot of his bed. It is still, and does not move.
“Did you break into my house to get away from the cold?” Techno asks.
The creature says nothing. It only pulls one of the blankets at the end of Techno’s bed closer to itself.
“Well if you’re gonna stay at least take another blanket,” Techno grumbles.
Techno doesn't expect for his hibernation to be interrupted by a strange creature who breaks into his house. He decides to let it stay. Throughout the winter, the creature wakes him up in intermissions until spring. Inviting them to stay turns out to be one of the best decisions he made.
Or, how Technoblade accidently befriends and adopts what he believes to be some sort of demon that visits in his sleep, but is actually just a curious shapeshifting child.
