Summary
‘I don’t see how your lack of reading skills is my responsibility.’ Hubert had snapped at him after he’d made the careful suggestion of taking a bit more care when writing his reports. His reaction didn’t come as a surprise, but exhausted Ferdinand nonetheless.
‘I’m just asking you to spend a little more time on making sure your writing is eligible.’ he argued, brushing out his hair more aggressively than he meant to in his own frustration. It was a distraction more than anything, albeit an ineffective one. Perhaps if Hubert would gently take the brush from him the way he’d often done in the early days of their relationship, the distraction would actually work.
It was wishful thinking, and Ferdinand knew it.
There had been a time when he’d helped him with his hair almost every evening, an act so intimate that on some days Ferdinand found himself looking forward to it even more than some other parts of their nightly routine, but that felt like a lifetime ago now.
These days, Hubert hardly bothered to so much as run his fingers through his hair at all.
