Summary
The older Mike and Eleven got, the harder it became for anyone to pretend they were still kids. It was especially hard for Hopper. First it had been manageable - a movie evening here and a bike ride there, Mike stopping by the cabin after school. Normal things that didn’t really worry Hopper, but made him glad that Eleven could taste the normal life with her friends, without worrying about monsters or “bad men” hurting her. The issue was… She mostly hung out with one person and it was Mike Wheeler. And it became clear as day that he was nowhere near “just a friend” of hers.

Mike closed his locker and offered him a small, shy smile. “Yeah! I actually have her first period too. We could walk together—if you want.”
“That… that would be great. Thanks.” Will felt a little of the tightness in his chest ease, though he didn’t know why. Besides Jane, Mike was the only person in this hallway who made everything more comfortable.
By the time he got to his room later, sketchbook on his lap, he couldn’t stop thinking about the boy with the steady eyes, the calm smile, and the way the hallway hadn’t felt so overwhelming when Mike had been there.

The family that lives on the edge of Maple Street is… peculiar. That’s a nice way of putting it, anyway. Or at least that’s the grand assumption of them. To the Wheelers, they were normal- if you didn’t take into consideration the divorce and whatnot but “typical” families had plenty of divorced parents, so Mike didn’t see it as something that set him apart from the rest of the Hawkins population.
So no, it wasn’t the divorce that set them apart. Or the fact that his Mom was an actress who’d just recently made it big in the television industry, or even his Dad’s wind chime business.
It had to do with their… gift. That’s at least what his Uncle called it.

Milwaukee is frigid and Mike hates Lake Michigan, hates the wind and the cold but he can't stop writing about it, staring out at the horizon and wanting. He stumbles into having to face his collapsing means of control and carefully crafted walls. Mike is forced to see what he has been turning away from, a boy with brown hair and hazel eyes that is in his bones, in every beat of his heart, who he has known longer than he has known himself.
Will Byers who is so much a part of him he wouldn’t be able to carve him out if he wanted to.
Mike needs to decide whether he'll stay stranded on the shore, or if the water could grant him salvation. If he can survive never knowing.
