Aušra’d been trying to excuse herself for the past twenty minutes. She was pretty sure Sam was being purposefully obtuse to her intentions to keep her there longer. Asking more random questions or pulling the conversation elsewhere. He was doing it now, rambling on about… uh, about…
Fuck. about something —she sure as shit didn’t know what; despite her best attempts, her brain had clocked out a while ago.
Finally, after what felt like twenty attempts to leave, she finally gave up on any further attempts of ‘politeness’ or ‘subtlety’.
“Sam,” she interrupted, not waiting for a response she barreled on, “it’s past midnight, I’ve been up since six, after a shitty night’s sleep, and a physically taxing day. Saying ‘I’m tired’ doesn’t begin to cover it. I’m going home to pass out. Okay?”
‘But you could just pass out here?’ he said hopefully.
“No.” His face fell, “I’m going home, to pass out in my own bed. You’ll both be fine. Nothing out here can hurt you.”
He looked at her and even as a wolf he managed to look petulant. ‘The Cold Ones could.’
There was no point in denying it, “yeah, they could, but they’d have no reason to —and you can hurt them as well. Plus, aren’t they like forbidden from coming on tribe territory —like through the treaty?” Sam mentally shrugged. “Have you not read it?” she asked incredulously, which was maybe a bit unfair because shehadn’t read it either.
‘No…?’
Damn, that was an issue, “well… we’ll need to rectify that oversight soon—” As well as for herself, since she had Dominion over them, she really should know the exact terms and language used, “—either way, you’re safe here, you’ll be fine, and I’m going home.”
She stood up and stretched, her shoulder joints popping as she raised her arms above her head, and her spine crackling almost the whole way down.
Giving Sam one last hug, she reassured him (again) that, yes, she would be back tomorrow.
Aušra walked a good fifteen meters away from the shifters. Her eyelids were heavy and every time she blinked it felt like a herculean effort to force them all the way open again. So, she didn’t, making her way through the undergrowth with her eyes just open enough to see. She focused on the feelings of home, andwarmth, and safety; mentally pulling herself closer until she was there.
She promptly dropped her bag on her bedroom floor, stripped, only bothering to throw on the same over-sized t-shirt she’d worn the night before —mostly because it was right there. She flopped down onto her bed, only to realize it was still made so all the blankets were now trapped underneath her. Letting out an overly dramatic groan, she shimmied and shuffled around finally maneuvering the covers overtop of her.
Once she settled, Tamsus climbed up and curled up next to her. She was out almost immediately after that.
