Summary
No legacy is so rich as honesty. What a load of bullshit. Only a fool believes in honesty. Pete should have known— should have seen it. Vegas was never an honest person. There was a small boat, lulled towards the island by the tide. The boat appeared to be empty— no one was rowing it. But as it got closer they realized that someone was lying on the bottom.

He swam out to the boat and hauled himself up into it. The person flinched at Vegas’ wet body as he pulled the person up to get a good look.

Summary
Ominous red light pours through the room, slanting in through high, narrow windows and reflecting off the dark chains that hang from the ceiling. Pete's shoulders ache from the harsh angle of his arms, cuffed around the concrete pillar at his back. His body hangs forward, bruised and exhausted. The metal is digging into his wrists.
When Pete was eight, his grandmother had taught him how to kindle a fire. Building a nest of soft wood shavings and twigs, lighting the spark, giving the fire your breath. Then slowly, slowly adding more wood, careful not to smother the flame. Fire needed air; it would die if it was covered, hidden.
Pete didn't want to die.
Eight-year-old Pete had wanted to touch the fire.

Or, Pete knows he's looking for trouble when he infiltrates the minor family compound.

Summary
Vegas’s heart, once an open wound for Pete, had started to shrivel and weaken with each passing day. He had once thought they were soulmates, mirror images, that no one else would understand him like Pete did. But Pete also cut him the deepest. Whatever it was they had between them in the safe house now felt thin and delicate, like gossamer. The lightest breeze rocked it.

Outwardly, Vegas is on top of everything. Months after the coup, he has his empire, he has Pete, and he has all the drugs and booze he could want.
Inside, Vegas fights off the pain daily, chasing it away with pills and things he knows he shouldn't mix with pills.
The worst of it, though, is that he can't even fuck Pete properly anymore, leaving Pete to find his pleasure elsewhere.(Not all is what it seems, though)

Summary
Vegas and Kim, two of the most feared teachers the college offered. Vegas in charge of quantum physics and Kim in musical theory. Both had clear distinct styles of teaching but both shared something in common. By the end of the term, most students had dropped out and those left almost always had cried in front of the teachers.
The two were brutal, ruling their classroom with iron fists. All those who stayed within the class would always pass with honors and go on to do incredible things. That was the only reason these two teachers were kept on the payroll.
Two students, seated next to each other, looked at Vegas and Kim with unabashed glee in their eyes. One, dressed in an oversized sweater and pants whined again, a sound that shaped his mouth into an O. The other cackled, grinning widely without trying to hide the fact. He was dressed almost as comfortable, with sweatpants and doubled as a skirt and a white shirt that swept across exposed collarbones.
