Jack sings along to the music playing over the kitchen speaker, swaying a little. He’s a terrible singer (medically diagnosed by Santos in a scathing review of his late night tunes), but he’s going through an Olivia Dean phase. Sue him.
The late summer sun is streaming through the open kitchen windows, painting everything gold as the breeze carries the sound of birdsong and passing conversation in. Robby is still out with Jake for an afternoon game of basketball, but due back any time.
He blows out a nervous breath, the velvet box in his pocket burning against his thigh.

Dennis Whitaker is fine.
Completely fine.
Perfectly fine, actually.
Please ignore the nausea, the fever, the tremor, the concerning neurological symptoms, and the fact that he may or may not be accidentally poisoning himself at work.The resulting medical emergency, however, does expose one additional problem: Dennis and Robby are apparently the last people in the hospital to realise they are not subtle.

The fears of a fucking five year old, in his adult body. He thought he was past this. The deep-rooted fear that he's doing something wrong. That he's not good enough. The desperation that - if he's just a good enough boy, obedient and charming, then people will stay.
"Baby," he murmurs, pulling Dennis back between them, into his lap. "We're not going anywhere, okay? We found you again, and fuck, I'm not letting you go this time."
