Each time they'd done drownproofing exercises in the pool, Colbert had been the one to tie his hands and feet together. Watching the other instructors, it's clear to Nate he was going out of his way to do so. And the sections of black cording were always very tight. Swimming handicapped back and forth in the pool, Colbert had always been there, looming over the edge, watching him like a hawk. Maybe more akin to a heron, truthfully.

(“I’m hungry,” Tim added unhelpfully, just to be a shit, because if he weren’t feeling like a hostage before, he certainly was now.
“Well hows about I drop you and Rachel off here and y’all can trek into town and get yerselves a nice Happy Meal at the McDonalds on eighth. I’ll pick you up in the morning, once you’re done playing with your toys.”
Tim returned Raylan’s look with a smile, the one with all his teeth, which he’d once been told made him look like a serial killer cannibal who wanted to fuck you then gnaw your leg off.
That was back in the sandbox. Martinez had said it over a game of Texas Hold’em.
Jesus Christ, Gutterson, don’t look at me like that, man.
Well, Martinez was dead, too, just like Mark, though it’d happened back there and not here, and Tim wasn’t sure who got the better end of the deal.)

A shell falls directly in front of him and the stranger steps over it. Its metallic surface caves into the hollow center in globs like melting wax. The same is true for every other shell that falls soundlessly. So the stranger pays them no mind.
All the stranger knows is his foot in front of the other, the snow it sinks into, and the artillery dropping down from the sky like rain. Nothing else exists. Nothing else but the flat tundra can be seen for uncountable miles in every direction.
And so the stranger walks, head empty of meaning beyond the here and now…

"Yeah," Shane bobs his head like an idiot, desperate for their interaction to end. "Nothing personal." There is a beat of agonizing silence. Hunter eyes him up and down, dismissive and assessing in turn.
"I'm fine," he replies stiffly, his shoulders locking up tight without his permission. Hunter smiles, satisfied. Shane has passed some test, though for what purpose it served, he couldn't guess.
"Let me buy you a drink," Hunter offers, clapping him on the shoulder, his touch heavy as lead, hot as a dying star crashing through the heavens.
