Summary
Mike turns his head to the left and sees himself in a giant mirror.
It's like looking at a stranger. The green beanie he borrowed from Lucas is askew, slipping off to the side, exposing his matted greasy curls and a long bloody bruise down the side of his face that he can no longer remember acquiring. He is not crying, but his eyes are bloodshot as though he could start at any moment.
He doesn't feel like he will, though. He thinks he will never feel anything again.

The first nine months immediately after the collapse of the Upside Down.

Summary
Be kind to yourself, Cassie says in his head, soft and gentle. But Frank can’t. There is no world in which he can be kind to a version of himself that hurts Robby, especially sober. He’s supposed to be better now; he’s spent ten months clawing his way back inch by inch to being a person instead of a loose collection of hurts and cravings and spikes that pierced anyone nearby. But it seems that the version of himself that can connect with Robby, see eye-to-eye with him, talk to him without feeling like a gut punch, died the day of Pittfest last year.
--
Three conversations between Langdon and Robby, after Langdon's return.

Summary
She steps over chords and lines and tubes, edges through the small gap between beds until she is standing on the other side of Adamson, across from Robby, able to see his face through the plastic faceguards. He has the same look on his face that he’s had since Adamson went down and left him, immediately and with no warning, in charge: unsure and lost and young. It angers her this time, for some reason; she wants to slap him, force him to live in this reality with her.

Dana and Robby and Adamson's death.

Summary
Mike never knocked on Will’s bedroom door when he came over, is the thing. Will had never knocked on his either, or Lucas’s or Dustin’s; that’s just how they had all been since they were kids, trampling in and out of each other’s lives with little thought for privacy or space. Mike’s basement was as much Will’s as anything in his own house. Will knew the whorls in the carpet and the shape of the masking tape holding up Mike’s movie posters as well as he knew the same details in his own bedroom. He knows Mike thought nothing of it to run down the short hallway as he had done a hundred, a thousand times before and open the bedroom door as though it were his own. Everything that happens after this moment, Will thinks to himself as he and his childhood best friend stare at each other in mutual horror, is entirely his own fault.

Or, Mike catches Will kissing a boy.

Summary
Ringo takes up watch with George on the stoop; deft fingers light up ciggies for both of them. They smoke in silence, listening to Paul circle the same song over and over, waiting for John to show and blow the whole thing up. John whose straw had been the one to break the camel’s back and send George flying out the door of Twickenham in a rage five days ago; John who stared down George’s willingness to make amends in abject silence at Ringo’s house on Sunday, Yoko speaking for him instead.

Summary
There are cops in the ED when Dennis arrives for his shift.
Not necessarily unusual, sure, but he could've done without the unwelcome news that there's a knife-wielding maniac on the loose in their immediate vicinity.
Figures this would happen on a Monday.

Dustin reaches the explosive pack, and lights it. The colors go up into the sky, flashes of bright green and white and pale purple against the encroaching, dark, red-and-black sky. A beacon of hope. A promise of tomorrow.
Will watches the fireworks go off, the sparks raining down on a world that ended for him years and years ago.
The night before the end of the world, Mike and Will find a way to meet in the middle.

Summary
“You got a verse for that, too?”
Once again, Dennis pauses to think, willing his futile diploma into good use. He tries to stay focused as he meets Robby’s patient gaze, but the sight leaves his heart kicking erratically against his ribs.
“‘Come now, and let us reason together. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; if they’re red like crimson, they shall become like wool.’”
“Jeez, Whitaker,” Robby huffs, elated. “You got the whole book memorized?”
“Something like that.”
Robby and Whitaker keep running into each other at the hospital's chapel.
