Charles takes all that in for a second, grappling with the idea that if Pain isn’t lying, then Charles is set to spend the rest of a very long eternity in Hell.

Augustin knows a good deal when he sees it, and he’s not stupid enough to waste a lovely fucking flat just because his flatmate doesn’t want to wish him good morning. And other than not being chatty, he is a paragon of housemate-ly virtues: he never leaves a mess in the kitchen, never plays loud music or watches TV in the living room til 3 in the morning, or has loud annoying sex on the other side of the wall. In fact, he is, apart from the absolute refusal to engage with Augustin, the perfect flatmate.

The other boy lifts their joined hands and presses his mouth to Charlie's ring finger. Charlie smiles, purely joyful, a smile like he used to have when he was a child, before things got hard. He looks so handsome.
He's taller than she remembered, smiling down at Niko as she hurries over. As Niko speaks, his eyes go round, smile fading. And he looks right at her.
