Partners

Summary:

Despite being top of your class at the Police Academy you had spent the majority of your police career behind a desk and a fake smile. Now given the opportunity to be one of the first humans to work side by side with super naturals in the field you were going to make it count. Even if that meant having to deal with two vampires that weren't quite sure what to do with you. One was a nervous wreck and the other probably just wants to wreck you. But it shouldn't be that hard to be their new partner right?

So apparently I'm now chaotic enough to start a third story on this website... I'm sorry about that, but I couldn't help myself? I really have no excuses for pulling this when I should 100% be writing for my other stories other than this one was begging to have the first few chapters posted. Then I had a friend be like just post it then, so I did...

I don't think this story will be as heavy on the angst as any of my others, but topics wise we're going to cover a lot of things such as sexism, racism, and classicism. I also do my best to not got to specific in my description of the main girl as always to not kill the fantasy. If at any point you have any issues or concerns never be afraid to message me I always try my best to explain my thoughts and reasons.

For story warnings please check the tags as I will be updating them as I continue to post chapters.

Chapter Text

It was the seventh anniversary of The Great Reveal. You had been a second year in university when it had happened, bright eyed and eagerly awaiting to learn more so you could enter the police force. The world had been shaken to its core when it had happened.

The Great Reveal was the name given to the day in which all super natural creatures had chosen to reveal themselves to the human population of the world. Widespread panic had consumed the human population when they found out that vampires, werewolves, witches, and the like all existed. However, they had emphasized that they wanted peace and to figure out a way to coexist together. They were convincing enough that after about two weeks of mass pandemonium everyone had calmed down.

In terms of population super natural creatures were completely outnumbered by the human population and their numbers were continuing to drop. The Great Reveal was in fact them pleading for help in establishing systems to help maintain their numbers. It looked different for every type of super naturals. For vampires, it was the establishment of blood banks to help them maintain a healthy intake of both human and nonhuman blood to stop starvation. For werewolves it was the establishment of werewolf sanctuaries, so that their pack territories weren’t destroyed for more buildings. It varied so much.

The Great Reveal had also in avertedly revealed another group of people. Those with heightened senses and physical strength, but were still very much humans. However, they were humans that held the belief that they needed to destroy all super natural creatures and completely eradicate them from the world. They were hunters and had been aware of super naturals existing all along. The hunters had turned into extremists who now sought to murder all super naturals whether they posed a threat to society or not.

Something which after The Great Reveal many people decided was unethical, causing a rift among the human population. It was hard to condone the systematic slaughter of many children and other living beings. Although in your opinion humans had been doing that to each other for many years. They had possibly out of fear of being too weak agreed to collaborate on different initiatives.

However, the human world had been trying to think of ways to establish a way in which to police the new super natural population in a way that wasn’t a danger to the officers, but also not encroaching on the long-established laws of the super natural community.

It had taken years, but they were now establishing multiple joint human officer and super natural partnerships in order to protect both the human and super natural population.

That was something you were very much hoping to be selected for.

“I can’t believe that you’d actually sign up to work with the new special division aren’t you afraid?” Wheein asked. “They’re vampires after all.”

“I mean I still get along with you despite our different diets, so I’m not really that worried,” you commented.

“But I’m vegan they literally, drink human blood,” she commented. “Both you and Moonbyul are absolutely crazy to interview for it.”

You were glancing over your appearance in the mirror. Straightening out your hair to cover your neck and anything else that may make a weaker vampire unable to control themselves. You wanted to appear as professional as possible for this. If you secured this position you could finally be freed from the desk duty that you had endured for the past two years of your career.

It was almost impossible for you as a female to move up in the violent crimes department. You would have thought that your outstanding academy record one which was far better than your male juniors who had already been moved off from desk duty would have helped. Unfortunately for you it was now a well-known fact that Kim Heechul believes females behind a desk and not out in the field, leaving you stranded in a sea of paperwork.

However, what made this position so special and actually obtainable was for the first time he wasn’t making the decisions. The leader of the Bangtan Clan was selecting the partners for the group of vampires that were going to be working with the division. Interviews had been open to anyone assigned to the divsion and not just current field officers.

“You know that they all wouldn’t have been selected for this if they weren’t completely under control, right?” you asked. “The city did their research on which clan to ask to take this on. They also would have turned this down if they didn’t want to make this work and be a part of it.”

“I forget how optimistic you are. I guess it’s because I see you being all hard-ass on everyone who tries to walk through the door. I guess maybe the vampires are less scary than an entitled human trying to lodge a ridiculous complaint.”

“Yeah, well I should head back to the waiting area, my interview is soon.” You shot the other woman a bright smile that she returned.

“Honestly, I hope it goes well for you. Your potential is wasting away behind a desk and you deserve to get out in the field.”

“Thanks Sunbae, tell Moonbyul sunbae good luck from me if you see her.”

“Will do!”

You exited the women's bathroom and made your way to the waiting area. As expected, the area was packed with officers from every rank in the division. The Gangnam-gu police force was one of the larger branches and not to mention one of the most well-funded. Put in the fact that sometimes by solving a case an officer could be helping the rich and well connected, and just about every officer wanted to work there.

“(l/n), didn’t expect to see you here,” a voice commented.

You looked to see the golden boy of the department standing with three other officers, who moved away once he had fully approached you. Lee Taeyong was a lot of things and unfortunately for you none of them were unattractive. With features celebrities could be jealous of and skill set that made him almost deserving of all the praise he received, he was well loved by most. However, the haughty and belittling attitude he had adopted from your Chief of department towards women was something that made him unpopular with most females in the department.

Add in the fact that he was once under you in the academy ranking, but somehow had risen through ranks faster than you could blink, and you practically loathed him.

“Taeyong, I could say the same to you.”

“Why wouldn’t I? I’m the best officer currently in the field. It’s also detective now,” he corrected.

“Just because you have the best record doesn’t make you the best officer,” you replied. “That was one of the first things they taught us.”

“Yes, but at least I have a field record.” You let the polite smile drop of your face. Bringing up the fact that you hadn’t been allowed out in the field once was not something you liked to be reminded of. “Besides, shouldn’t you be afraid of vampires.”

“Don’t reflect your insecurities onto me.”

He let a smirk cross his face.

“I’m always available if you can’t find anyone to sle—"

Thankfully or perhaps not thankfully someone chose to call you in for your interview.

“(l/n) (y/n), we’re ready to interview you now.”

You wiped off the scowl on your face and proceeded toward the man. The instant you laid eyes on him your instincts told you he was a vampire. There was a stereotype about all vampire that for the most was true. They were all beautiful. Vampires needed to be so to help them lure their prey to them. It was an evolution thing from what you understood.

The vampire that stood in front of you was absolutely beautiful. From the perfectly clear skin to his broad shoulders and plump kissable lips. He stood confidently as he sent you a charming smile. His hair was dark and parted so his forehead just peaked out in a style that was getting popular now days. He was dressed in a smart grey suit not looking too formal or too casual.

You followed him into the room, noticing that there was one other man in the room. He was also a vampire. Hair dyed and ash blonde color and styled to be parted to reveal his full forehead. While the man looked slightly younger than the previous one the way he somehow commanded attention told you that he was probably older than the other in vampire years.

“Have a seat Ms. (l/n),” the one sitting said. You did as he said sitting down. “My name is Kim Namjoon and I am the leader of the Bangtan Clan. Also, here with me is my second in command Kim Seokjin. We are holding interviews because we’re hoping to create five teams made up of vampires and human police officers in order to investigate violent crimes both super natural and natural. Are you in the correct place?”

“Yes, I am sir.” you replied.

“I am sure it’s no surprise to you, but we have been given full access to your file. I’m also sure that you’re aware that we are looking for officers to be in the field. You have absolutely glowing reviews from your academy instructors and your grades were exceptional. However, since leaving the academy you have been working inside the station and not in the field. Why?”

When you briefly met his eyes, you could tell that it was a genuine question. He seemed curious and slightly confused at it. You were after all top of your class and held number one in multiple areas that would be useful in the field. The question was, would he want to hear your actual genuine response or did he want a made-up answer. You decided to give him a real answer because more than likely he would be able to tell if you were lying.

“I’m behind a desk for the exact same reason every other female person in the division is,” you replied.

You saw a brief flicker of understanding cross his face before he once again took on a more neutral expression.

“Now tell us everything that you know about vampires,” Kim Seokjin stated. Unlike Namjoon he held a pleasant smile on his face. As if he was trying to change the entire mood of the interview.

“Well there are the obvious things that vampires drink blood to survive, but most people are under the misconception that vampires are lifeless bodies. Vampires drink blood when the blood in their own body depletes, so that their body can keep functioning normally. They also don’t age and can live until an outside force acts upon them. There’s also the fact that vampires have increased senses of smell, hearing, and sight. The increase in hearing is in part due to them being able to sense objects around them and the vision has to do with being able to see things in the dark more than an increased range of vision. This also makes them sensitive to light, but not unable to go outside during day light hours. Their ability to smell things is more than a human, but less than werewolves. Vampires also have the ability to develop certain powers as they increase in age the first which is usually enhanced strength but after that varies greatly.”

Kim Seokjin blinked at you incredibly surprised.

“Looks like you actually did your research Ms (l/n),” Seokjin stated. “I’ll admit I’m mildly impressed.”

“Ms. (l/n), why do you want to work with a vampire partner?” Namjoon asked.

“In all honesty it’s not that I want to work with a vampire partner. I want to go and make a difference in our community. I want to make it safer for everyone both super natural and natural to live in. This just happens to be a great opportunity to make that a reality.”

They asked a few different questions about scenarios before they were clearly starting to wrap up the interview.

“Do you any further questions or things you would like us to know before we conclude this interview?” Namjoon asked.

“Yes, as I’m pretty positive it’s not in my file and I’m also relatively sure that you may or may not be able to tell but, I have hunter blood in me.”

For a moment Seokjin’s eyes widened before they darted to Namjoon who looked very unsurprised at this admission. He had been able to tell more than likely.

“I’m not nor have I ever been a part of an actual hunter faction, but both of my parents were before they chose to defect. I have been trained how to be a hunter but neither myself nor my parents have had any desire for me to join a faction.”

The two men in the room were silent after you finished.

“That will be all,” Namjoon said.

“I’m sorry, but I have one more thing to ask.” Namjoon raised an eyebrow at that and you couldn’t tell if it was because he was annoyed or if he just wanted you out of his presence. Either way the man didn’t seem very happy to have you there. “I’m keeping the whole hunter thing private. It’s not really something to be proud of at the moment.”

“I understand. We shall keep this information confidential,” Seokjin said after a glance toward Namjoon who remained silent. “Thank you for your time.”

With a polite bow you left the two men alone to discuss.

“How was it?” Wheein asked as you returned to your seat at the front desk.

“I honestly have no clue, they were both very hard to read,” you replied.

“The station is buzzing about how attractive the interviewers were,” Wheein stated. “I only caught a glance but the one I saw was handsome.”

“Vampires are all attractive. I’m also sure you’ll see a lot more of them once they move into the station,” you stated.

“That’s true I guess that’s the one major perk we’ll have once they fully move into the office,” she said with a dreamy sigh. “Anyway, the girls and I are going to get drinks tonight after are shift ends in about ten minutes, are you down?”

“Nah, Jackson should be here any minute we’re going to go get pizza and chill,” you replied.

“Yeah chill,” Wheein teased with a wink.

Contrary to popular belief of basically everyone you knew; you and Jackson were not sleeping together. You had been friends from a very young age due to your parents being close friends. Jackson was a year older and had taken to protecting you like a younger sister. His protectiveness sometimes came across as possessiveness, but that was mostly to humans.

You weren’t sure if anyone at the station was aware of it, but Jackson was a full shifting werewolf. For them it was just natural instinct to protect those who were close to them. There was actual video evidence of Jackson herding you around obstacles when you were around three or four in his wolf form. You had always been close. It was for that reason that even after The Great Reveal you knew better than to expose his identity as a werewolf to others. Jackson himself didn’t really care if people knew, but he also didn’t go around shouting it out to everyone.

“(y/n)! Are you off yet?” a loud voice tore you from your thoughts. Speak of the devil and he shall appear.

“You’re early I still have like five minutes,” you replied.

“I’m sure dipping out five minutes early would be okay, right Wheein?” Jackson said, batting his eyes at her. Wheein just giggled and you rolled your eyes.

“I don’t mind, but you’re not going to convince her, so I would just take a seat.”

The five minutes went by quickly and soon enough you went back to the locker room to change. Jackson was up and ready to go when you go there and the two of you headed out, making small talk on the way.

It was when the two of you finally sat down after ordering that Jackson voiced what he had probably always been thinking.

“You smell weird,” he said. His nostrils flaring as if he was trying to put a name to the scent. “What did you do today?”

“Well I went to work and towards the end of my shift I had an interview for a promotion…” you trailed off, hesitant to tell him everything.

After The Great Reveal Jackson had been a lot less enthusiastic about you working as a police officer given the circumstances. He agreed that you could hold your own, but he had grown so used to you always being safe behind a desk that hearing you were going to be out in the field probably wasn’t too exciting for him.

“What kind of promotion?” Jackson asked.

“The kind when I get paired with a vampire and we team up to solve crime and make the world a better place,” you stated.

“Damn I was really hoping that you were going to say that Jaebum came to your work today to interview you.”

“Wait your pack is going to be working with the police? Also you would have known right away if it was Jaebum’s scent.”

“Fair and yeah we are, don’t sound so surprised. Just because you’ve been roaming around with us since you were in diapers doesn’t change the fact that we’re like the pack south of the Han River in Seoul. Although I don’t know which district we’re working with if not yours, probably Seocho-gu then. Ugh I was seriously hoping that we could team up.”

“Oh god I think I would rather stay at my desk. We’d take a week tops before we murdered each other. We’re great friends, but I don’t think Jaebum would be dumb enough to pair us together.”

“Wow you’re really hurting my feelings.” You scoffed at him and he just grinned in response. “What clan are you working with?”

“Bangtan Clan.”

“Well fuck, you’ve got your work cut out for you. They’re an odd bunch. Not in a bad way, but they’re weird even for vampires. Also their leader is like ancient and super powerful. I’ve never met them, but when Jinyoung met them at the super naturals meeting once he said that he would never under any circumstances pick a fight with them unless he was suicidal.”

“I guess that just means you won’t have to worry about my safety if I get selected.”

“Yeah, I still have to worry that you’ll insult one of them and they drain you because you’re a brat.”

“You know some encouragement would be nice. Also, how out of all your pack members did you get selected to be on the Korean police force. You’re not even Korean, so why do it.”

“That was a low blow and you know. I mean it’s about protecting stuff and that happens to be something I’m very good at. I also miss the days where I served purpose outside of just the pack sanctuary.”

It was true Jackson had been a part of a large pack since birth. When he had moved from Hong Kong to Korea when he was still a toddler, he had taken to it surprisingly well. His parents had moved because of his father’s job and when applying for the packs had applied for one of the highest ranked ones. Although their family had started out rather low on the hierarchy, they had moved up thanks not only to Jackson’s ability to handle pack responsibilities well, but also thanks to him befriending the future head alpha Jaebum at a young age. Due in part to that status he had been allowed to complete high school and university outside the pack and as such experienced a rather human upbringing.

However, after completing all his schooling he had to settle down for a life full of pack duties. He hadn’t been named second in command to the future alpha, but he was high up on the list. His only excuse to leave had been to visit you, but now he has a valid reason to roam around as he sees fit.

“Okay fair it was a low blow,” you replied. “I just can’t see you getting caught up in the bureaucracy of the law, especially now when it’s still changing to suit the needs of the super natural community.”

“I guess, but you still manage to do it. You’re doing just fine and haven’t had any issues.”

“If I get accepted I’m expecting to run into some issues.”

“Like what?”

“Well, it will be the first time I have a partner, so getting along with them. Not to mention that we would be part of a larger unit, so I have to get along with my unit too. Then there’s going to be Heechul to deal with who will probably make my life a living hell. And let’s not forget, if we run into any hunter groups they’re going to throw an absolute fit over me being okay with working with a vampire.”

“Gosh imagine if they found out your best friend is a werewolf.”

“I’d rather not deal with the headache, but lucky for you I happen to be a dog person, so I’d deal with it.”

“Thanks I feel honored,” he said with a wide grin on his face.

You laughed and were ready to spend a nice evening relaxing with your friend before things turned chaotic.

OO00OO

“What do you mean you don’t like her?” Jin asked. “She was absolutely lovely.”

“Whether she was lovely or not has nothing to do with if she’s prepared to handle the work. Just because you like her doesn’t mean we can hire her,” Namjoon said, glancing over his interview notes.

After hours of deliberation they had narrowed it down to ten candidates and were making decisions based on who would be the best fit for their different members.

“But Joonie, don’t you see? She’d be a perfect match with anyone. Her skill set and knowledge is probably beyond what some of us know about other super natural creatures. She may not belong to a hunter faction, but she’s obviously been trained. Add to that fact that she’s more durable than the other humans and she’s perfect.”

“Jin it’s not just the physical, but personality wise if they would match.”

Jin looked completely affronted by his words.

“You’re centuries old and you haven’t realized that people are fake as fuck during interviews?”

“Yes, but I can normally see through all the lies and fakeness, so it doesn’t really matter.” Namjoon paused as he looked at the different profiles. “Just who would you match her up with anyway?”

Jin pointed to the two pictures which had been bothering both him and Namjoon because they hadn’t known what to do with them.

“They can’t be separated. He’s going to be to unsatisfied no matter who his partner is, but he’s going to be terrified to hurt his partner. She’s strong enough to put up with his shit and also make him a little less terrified about spending time around humans. Perfect fit.”

“Except for you picked the two people with the most issues when it comes to hunters.”

Jin shot him a look daring him to disagree with his logic, but he realized he couldn’t. What he said had been a perfectly logical deduction, even if he really didn’t want to think about the outrage that this may cause among their coven members.
