Work Text:
It should be a work-related meeting.
Klavier should not be on his phone, playing some weird viral game that he's somehow gotten addicted to although it'd only been two days since its release. Athena shouldn't be giggling at the two older men talking, arguing, something across the table. And above all, Apollo shouldn't be looking down at the table questioning all of his life choices that have led up to this exact moment.
But everyone's doing literally anything except legal-related things.
Across the table from the three of them, Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth are in their own little world. Paperwork strewn across the large table (and basically forgotten), the two of them seem deeply engrossed in a conversation that Athena is having way too much fun pretending (and failing to pretend) that she's not listening to.
"What do you mean, you're not going?"
"I'm just not going, Wright."
"Why?"
"I don't owe you an explanation."
"We're best friends."
"That isn't a reason."
"Who is this Larry guy anyway?" Klavier cuts in. The two of them blink, looking at him as if they had only just realized that he and everyone else was sitting there, watching their conversation. "Do I know him?"
"He's that artist guy, right?"
"Polly's right. I don't think you've ever met him, Klavier. He's..." Phoenix glances away. "Unpredictable? Disastrous? Absolutely chaotic?"
"The answer to all those questions is a resounding yes," Miles mutters.
"Honestly I'm surprised he's even getting married in the first place."
Miles makes a weird face. "Surely it's not so difficult to think that he would settle down."
"You don't know him like I do - he claims that his future wife is his soulmate, but he's also claimed that of every girlfriend he's ever had."
"I mean, it was bound to eventually end. Surely I wouldn't expect him to be a bachelor for the rest of his life. In any case, it's good for him that he found someone to be with, apparently for the rest of his life."
-
"What a strange turn to the conversation," Apollo mutters. "I thought we were here for work-related reasons."
"Take a breather, Herr Forehead!" Klavier puts away his phone, smirking. "It's nice to have a break anyway - plus, this is super entertaining to me."
"Yeah, sure, b-- Where did Athena go?"
"She went to get something for me -- oh thanks, Fraulein Cykes."
"Of course."
Apollo glances over and does a double-take.
"Popcorn!?"
Klavier takes one of the bags of popcorn. "Ja. Popcorn," he says vaguely. "Want some?"
-
"I know what you're saying, but still. The rest of his life, huh? I'm one of his oldest friends and I don't think I could ever imagine spending the rest of my life involved with someone like him. No offense to him, but..."
"He's just not your type, Wright."
Phoenix continues, "Of course he's not my type. We were childhood friends; I can't see him that way!"
"Your point, Wright? We're childhood friends and I wouldn't mind spending the rest of my life with you."
A pin drops in the room.
"You... what?"
"Oh god no."
"Oh yes," Athena murmurs, shoveling popcorn into her mouth.
"... Huh. That sounds an awful lot like a proposal to me, Herr Edgeworth."
Miles flinches slightly. "It's not...!"
"Wait, a proposal?" Phoenix scrunches his nose. "We're not even dating, Edgeworth!"
"You guys aren't together?" Athena asks in wonder.
"No??" Both men exclaim at the same time in equal disbelief and shock.
"Why would you think that??" Phoenix questions.
Miles cuts in. "Besides, marriage is a social construct that is unnecessary and frivolous. There's no point to it. If you're committed to someone, then you are - you don't need something like marriage to prove it. Either way, I wouldn't marry you, Wright."
"Mhm..." Phoenix adds, "But would you date me?"
Miles doesn't respond to that, just stills and stares at Phoenix with an incredulous look in his eyes. There's a flicker of something in his eyes, but it's quickly overshadowed by confusion.
Despite Miles opening his mouth, nothing comes out.
"Ladies and gentlemen... we got 'em."
"Athena, stop making vague references; no one's going to understand."
-
"So," Phoenix quips, holding on tightly to Miles' arm, his new boyfriend (Oh my god, his new boyfriend, he's thought about this for years, but it's actually happening? Miles Edgeworth is his boyfriend? Honest to god, his actual boyfriend in real life and not just daydreams? This is the best day in the world.). "Marriage is completely and totally off the table?"
Miles just lets out an amused snort. "Get back to me in five years, and you'll find out."
-
They get married within the next two years.
