Work Text:

When he was on the verge of death, Wei Wuxian looked back just to see the great Hanguang-Jun tearing up at the sight of his bloody self. He couldn’t help but flinch at the pain in his eyes and he almost broke out of the devilish character they had turned him into.

Lan Wangji was about to lose it.

He was about to lose everything.

The love of his life -the only one besides his brother who would speak more than three words to him, the only one other than his uncle that could get him to look down (even if one was because of shame when being yelled at, and the other because of the constant flirting at his person), the only person capable of making him a mess inside, the reason he stayed up at night at the Jingshi, the one that made him feel all bubbly inside when he so much as looked in his general direction, the reason for his small smiles when nobody was looking and maybe even a little giggle when he thought about the flattering comments the other made about him when he thought only his friends could hear him-, and with him his will to live.

Because that was all he had left.

A man and a concept.

Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian was caught between punching Lan Zhan out of anger and hugging him because that expression really was tearing at his heart.

He’d never seen the guy with such a pained face and it was kind of starting to take a toll on him.

He lowered his flute and stared at Lan Wangji with blank eyes before stepping forward and embracing him in a tight hug –he ended up choosing the second option-.

Wangji could only widen his eyes and stand there gaping like a fool.

“I’m sorry,” Wei Ying said, voice cracking a little. “I don’t even know what I’m sorry for, but I saw your eyes and I’m so sorry.”

They stood there for a while, glued onto each other and not making a single move.

“I love you,” Wangji managed to gasp out through the knot that was starting to form in his throat.

Wei Wuxian wanted to be surprised, but strangely, he felt like he shouldn’t.

“You mean it?”

“Yes.”

“Now what?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, you love me, and although I can’t bring myself to say the words, if I really think about it, I kinda feel the same way.”

“Then I suppose everything is going to be okay.”

“Yeah, I guess so.”
