Odile spent her whole life drowning, and she didn’t even know it until she saw Odette for the first time. All this time, everything she saw and felt was muffled, blurred through a mile of water pressing on top of her. And when she saw Odette dancing, she finally emerged from that lake, and took her first breath.
It was short-lived, of course. Now she went through her life in a daze--sweeping and dusting while her mind was thousands of miles away. Every now and then, she saw Odette, and those were the times when she came up for air.
These breaths were short and quick, but surely the sweetest air a girl like her had ever tasted.
