Sugar 'n Spice (and Everything Nice)

Summary:

Kayce rolled over so he was facing her. Per the usual he was blown away by her beauty. No matter the day, the season, the time, whatever, she always looked stunning. Even now, with a hint of tiredness ringing her eyes, she still took his breath away.

Chapter 1: Sunday Mornings

Chapter Text

They’re laying in bed on a Sunday morning, and it’s the first time in months Kayce has stayed in bed past 4 AM in years.  But today he’s going with Monica to the doctor's so they can check on their new little creation.  A month ago their relationship was so on the rocks that Kayce wouldn’t have dared dream of a second child on the way. But this morning it felt right, everything felt right.  He and Monica had been working on their relationship tirelessly.  Kayce had given up all the vices that most often soured his temper, and that had done wonders.  Monica had signed them up for couples counseling, and she was seeing a therapist on her own as well.  Things weren’t perfect, but then again, when was life ever truly perfect?  He was just happy that at least things were better than they'd been in years.

He felt her stir next to him and she rolled so her ever-growing bump was pressing into his back.

“Morning babe,” she said, wrapping him in her arms.  She kissed the back of his neck tenderly.

“Morning baby,” he replied, voice still froggy with sleep.

Her chin came to rest on his shoulder and she snuggled even closer, one hand twining in his hair and her other splayed across his stomach. They lay like that for a few minutes, soaking in the silence that only filled the house when Tate was at a friend’s or still in bed.  Monica pressed a kiss into his bare shoulder, “You need a haircut, Kace.”

“Do I?”

“Mm, it’s getting pretty scruffy. You’re getting pretty scruffy.”

“Thought you liked the scruffy look, baby.”

“I do,” she said, kissing him again, this time gently nipping his skin, “But it’s getting out of hand, even for you.”

Kayce rolled over so he was facing her.  Per the usual he was blown away by her beauty.  No matter the day, the season, the time, whatever, she always looked stunning. Even now, with a hint of tiredness ringing her eyes, she still took his breath away.

“Guess my handler hasn’t been keeping me in line too well then?”

She rolled her eyes, “We’ve been busy, Kace.  But this afternoon I’ll take care of it, after our scan?”

“Mm,” he agreed, scooting down to kiss her stomach, “You know she’s gonna rule the house, right? Our reign is over.”

“She?” Monica’s eyes twinkled, “You think it’s a girl?”

“I dunno, something tells me it’s a little girl.”

“Either way, we haven’t been in control in years. Who are you kidding.” She lets out a humored laugh and he pulls himself back up so they’re eye level again.

“I think it’s another boy,” Monica mused, stroking his cheek, “And we’ll call him Wyatt.”

“Wyatt huh? I like the sounds of that, Wyatt Dutton. But, what if I’m right?”

“Hmmm,” Monica drew him in for a kiss, “Tate told me he’d want a baby sister called Lucy.”

“Lucy? Oh that’s cute.” He brushed a lock of her hair from her forehead and kissed her again, “So, Tate’s team girl as well then?”

“I reckon I’m the only one on team boy,” Monica laughed again, “I think everyone else is just praying it’s a girl, this family could use another girl.”

Kayce snorted, thinking about the two most prominent women in his life, neither of which were the pink and sparkly type. His sister Beth was as rough and ruthless as any man, and Monica wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows either, “What we could really use is a goldendoodle.”

Monica chuckled, “Or at least the human embodiment of one, but I don’t think that’s ever gonna be a possibility in this family, is it.”

“We’re all a bit too rough around the edges to produce something so sweet and fluffy.”

Monica sighed, ruffling his hair, “Guess the only thing fluffy’s gonna be your hair.”

“Guess so,” he mused, nuzzling her, “Shame, I was hoping you’d say we could get a puppy.”

“Absolutely not,” Monica said, “That is the last thing we need in this household.”

Kayce had to agree, a puppy would probably only add to the metaphorical tornado that was constantly ripping through their home.

They fell silent once again, and within a few moments, Monica was quietly snoring again.  He glanced at the clock, there was still plenty of time for her to get some rest before they had to be up and at ‘em.  In the meantime, he would get up and fix breakfast for her and Tate, but first, he snuggled up to his wife once more, and soaked in their tender moment of solitude.  It would be a long time before they had another peaceful Sunday morning once the new baby arrived. But truthfully? Kayce wouldn’t change a thing.  He was just happy to be back on the right track.

Notes:

I don't know what inspired this other than the fact that I hope Kayce and Monica can make it work for the sake of a new baby. Cute 'n fluffy, which is something that Yellowstone is NOT, but oh well, these two could use it.
