Work Text:
Merlins eyes opened and closed for the last time surronded by Tedros and Agatha begging him to stay just a little longer. He was content knowing the work he set out to finish was completed, fading away knowing Tedros would be in good hands.
…
The waves sloshed against the sand as the winds blew softly against the trees. Everything was meant to be and nothing to be disturbed, the sun was almost at its peak and the clouds swirled past as if they had nothing on their mind but lazy rivers and pina coladas. A screen was sat in the middle of the beach soon to be covered in dust and forgotten. The few who tried to look back into the world which they came from soon began to think of it as another video to be replayed again and again. As if nothing had happened during the time they lived. Though this time something was different, a group of people were crowded at the screen staring intently, focused, and concentrated. Merlin walked closer to the crowd as if he had never seen them before though in his heart he knew exactly who they were. His brain seemed clouded and disconnected from the world he was in, but he didn’t mind it. Merlin always had too much on his mind being a wizard and all, and sometimes he wished he could get rid of it all.
“Don’t they look so cute together?” a voice cooed.
“Personally I could have done better one the ceremony.” another said.
“That’s just cause your jealous they figured you were meant to be the king.”
“I wonder what would have happened if you didn’t go out for the snake.”
“I don’t mind to be honest, being king doesn’t really suit me.”
“Imagine that Chaddick as king! Reena would love that.”
The crowd soon continued their staring and settled down. Merlin stood there observing the crowd before gaining the courage to walk up to them, not knowing why he was so nervous. The group was still stuck to the screen looking at what appeared to be a wedding, he felt as if he was 13 again (though he had been just a couple days earlier). The crowd seemed to notice a presence behind them though they weren’t surprised, as if they were expecting someone to come.
A young teenage boy around Tedros age looked at Merlin, he seemed like every girls dream and assumed he had been close to Tedros.
“You look weird Merlin- though maybe I was expecting too much of you..” The boy who Merlin thought was Chaddick.
‘Just like Tedros.’ Merlin thought.
“Oh Merlin.. It’s so wonderful to see you- I’m so glad you finally stopped worrying about the two, they’re going to be fine.” Dovey said accompanied by Lady Lesso.
“Merlin’s here? Ooh I need this for the Camelot courier! Oh wait- I forgot..” said a sad Bettina while being comforted by a quiet Millicent. August Sader stood in the back as if he already knew this would have happened (Though Merlin didn’t really doubt it) smiling back at him. Merlin looked around the area as he spotted Lancelot and Guinevere sitting next to each other mesmorized by each other. Tristan saw him looking and explained.
“They haven’t been able to stop looking at each other ever since Guinevere walked upon these shores.” He joked.
“Tristan let them have their moment after so long they can finally live in peace, wouldn’t you be happy?” Bettina said.
Merlin also spotted two very familiar people looking at each other as if they had never met before. Both Callis and Vanessa stared at each other mouths open, not knowing what to say or do. Before long they ran up to each other and began to sob uncontrollably while hugging eachother, forgetting their past they didnt hate each other, no, they knew they didn’t hate each other, they were both insecure and wanted someone to love when they were chasing the wrong people entirely trying to figure out why they weren’t good enough for them.
Merlin smiled the same smile he had before he passed, this was what he always wanted, not power, not wisdom, but friends and close ones, because what is the purpose of life without those who are close to you? He learned that lesson a long time ago with Arthur and ever since then he had been afraid to get close to anyone without leaving and destroying their life.
Merlin looked at one final person, the one he was looking for, and there he was sitting on a rock eyes closed as if he was asleep though Merlin knew better. He walked up to the young boy transformed back to his younger self.
“Arthur?” Merlin spoke softly.
“Mm?..” Arthur opened his eyes pretending not to care.
“I’m sorry for leaving you.”
“What?-..”
“I shouldn’t have left in the first place but you became so different– so unlike you. . . after Guinervere left..”
“I can’t put the blame all on you.. It was unlike me so insecure. so terrified someone would betray me.. I made a lot of mistakes and– I hope you can forgive me.” Arthur said tears starting to form around the corners of his eyes.
Merlin felt bad, this poor boy was too young to be given all of this responsibility.. Just like Tedros. He thought about the young boy, would he have accepted his death? Surely he knew better than his father.. Merlin wished he could have had more time at least to tell Tedros everything he needed to know but he knew Tedros would do just fine. He let the crying boy rest on his body embracing his touch again.
Merlin was content once and for all.
