Family above all

Summary:

What should have happened in episodes 3/8 and 3/9 (homecoming and ordinary people).

Instead of betraying Klaus over an act any idiot could have guessed he did, Rebekah instead goes on the offensive and helps him put an end to the monster that hunted them for centuries

Work Text:

Rebekah Mikaelson knew she had her faults.  She was impulsive, selfish, and prone to violent outbursts when she didn’t get her way.  She also loved fire, a fact that had caused many a headache for her brothers over the centuries.

Once after spurning yet another one of his marriage proposals a suitor had spread the rumor that she was secretly a whore who mated with wolves, animals and even her own brothers.

The man was a prominent duke and a favorite of the king and thought his position would protect him from her brother’s wrath. Perhaps it would have.  But it did nothing to spare her own. She killed his entire guard with her bare hands and then roasted the man and his entire family alive. the fire would burn for two days before they were finally able to put it out.

Another time, a bakery had dared to serve her rotten meat pies.  She was so disgusted that she threw the owner and her lover into the oven. The flames would explode and set the shop ablaze and eventually would burn half of London to the ground, much to Elijah’s chagrin and Nik’s amusement.

Safe to say that Rebekah Mikaelson wasn’t one to cross, and despite her pretty face was definitely not one to play for a fool.

Which made this overture from the doppelganger so baffling.

She had not spoken much to this latest iteration of the Petrova doppelganger and truthfully, she did not care to. She had hated Tatia for how she played her brothers against each other and even Katerina had managed to cause some tension in her family.  This newest model seemed determined to keep up the trend of inciting family drama, based on the looks she gave the elder Salvatore.

A pity Stefan had his emotions turned off, there was little to do for entertainment in this small town.

“I don’t need to speak to you to keep you alive, Elena.  And I have no interest in Stefan. So go away”

“Actually, I am here to talk about this.”  the teenager held up a photo of a familiar carving.  Suddenly Rebekah was taken back a thousand years to when her and Nik had carved them. “I’m curious about why you and Klaus spent a thousand years running from your father”

Rebekah's face fell. She did not want to think about Mikael. Think about the fear and anger that he tormented them with. And shaped them with. From the moment he killed them and initiated their rebirth he had been a constant blight in their lives.  His rage was a forge that melted away what was once pure and sweet in them and forged them into warriors, survivors…. Monsters.

Her gentle older brother with an artist’s soul was now hateful and vengeful, satisfied with only plots and gaining power to face the man who had always tormented him.  Elijah was still consumed with guilt over failing to protect them. To protect him.   And nearly every betrayal, daggering, and  chink in their family bond could find its origins in Mikael and his torment of them.

And this child dared to bring him up. As if she understood who he was.

“I have to get ready. Homecoming is around the corner.” it was a feint to see if the girl would offer up more information.

She took the bait.

“Well then Maybe I’ll ask Mikael when we wake him?”

The girl was either arrogant or a complete fool. Perhaps both.  Still perhaps whatever madness that cause her to think she could extort information out an original, could be useful

“You are bluffing, you don’t know where he is. No one does” and not from lack of trying. From what Nik told her he had used countless resources trying to get information on the man’s whereabouts but to no avail.   It’s like he disappeared off the face of the planet.

“Then who is rotting in that old cemetery in Charlotte?”   The girl was too confident. She knew something.  She debated just bleeding out any vervain she was on and compelling the information out of her but decided against it. Humans rarely survived that, and Nik would be pissed if she killed her without good reason.

She would play along. for now.   “If you wake Mikael, we are all doomed. You. Me. Everyone in this pathetic little town.”

“So then tell me.”

“Are you daft you silly girl. I just did.  Mikael is called the Destroyer for a reason.” She gave the girl a look of disgust and walked away.   Elena looked on in contemplation, never noticing the calculating eyes of the blonde walking away from her.

---

“Did your hybrids find anything?”

“I’m afraid not little sister, but there was evidence that something was entombed there. The doppelganger may be fishing for information, but she knows more than she is letting on.”

“Do you think Stefan can get it out of her?”

“Unlikely.  Compulsion is a bit of a blunt tool especially with someone as slippery as my old friend. Plus, if they have any brains they will keep him out of the loop. Same with my Hybrid.”

“I’ll draw what she knows out of her then. If Mikael is free, He’s likely hiding somewhere in the wings… with the right bait Perhaps we can use this. End our nightmare once and for all.”

“Find out what you can. Dispose of sweet Elena if you must. We can always wait for the next incarnation of the doppelganger.  I have a few ideas of my own to get us more eyes and ears in that town. “She could hear him hesitating over the phone.” Be careful little sister. I don’t like having you alone with Mikael nearby…”

“I can take care of myself Nik, you know that. “She smiled “Seeing that etching brought back memories. You were a worrywart even as child.  when this is over you should take a vacation. Wouldn’t want you to start getting gray hair. “

“Bekah…”  Her smiled froze.  Klaus never called her Bekah unless he seriously fucked up.  Last time it was because he had accidentally spilled red wine on her favorite dress.  She was still livid about that. “There is something I must confess… something you may discover in the course of your investigation”

“I had a feeling I’d be setting something of yours on fire today.   What did you do this time?” she braced herself slightly. Being apologetic was not in Nik’s nature so if he was this apprehensive about telling her, it must be bad.

“Mikael did not kill our mother…I did.”  There was a silence over the phone as he waited for her response.

What he did not expect was a laugh. “I’m not an idiot Nik.  I’ve known a long time. Centuries even. We all knew.”  She was smug. It was very rare she managed to be a step ahead of him. “You don’t think Mikael ever tried to use that information to turn us against you? Besides what else would you have been carting around all these centuries.  Seriously, sometimes I think Elijah dropped you on your head when you were a baby.”

“I …had not considered that.  I’m Sorry I never told you, I just didn’t want you to hate me… I didn’t think you would ever forgive me for it… Sometimes I can barely forgive myself.”

“Always and Forever Nik. Sometimes I want to set everything you own on fire.  Sometimes I even want to snap your neck, especially when you kill off yet another of my playthings.  But I will never Abandon you.  None of us will. Perhaps you should remember that the next time you decide to dagger one of us.  Speaking of…  when are you going to set our brothers free?”

“Oh I suspect a Mikaelson family reunion is nigh upon us. First let us deal with Mikael.” He hesitated again. “Thank you, Rebekah.  I don’t know what I would do without you by my side. “He hung up and Rebekah smiled briefly.

She had contemplated revealing her own secret. Her greatest regret…her own betrayal of her blood.  But there was no point. The only other person who knew was dead, and there was no need to break her brother’s heart.

She loved all her brothers and hated them sometimes with equal measure.  Being the youngest sibling and the only girl to boot had its own challenges, especially back when she was a child and women were supposed to be pretty, obedient, and silent.   She was none of those things and had even as a child refused to be fitted into such a role. She skipped the weaving and cooking lessons taught to the other village girls. She would fight and scrap with her brothers and even learned to wield a blade in secret.  Her other brothers and even her mother indulged her actions as mere flights of youth.

But Nik had always supported her. He would help her with her chores. Took the blame and many a beating in her stead when Mikael found out about what she was up to.  They protected each other, and she could not deny that she loved him the most. Their love had been innocent and pure.  Even as she got older and things like love and marriage became appealing to her. their bond remained strong.

Mikael and Esther had stolen that from her.  Murdered her and her siblings, turned them unwillingly into monsters.  And then they bound her brother's spirit, sealing off half of who he was and leaving him feeling lost and empty. They turned her sweet brother who cared more for art and creation than fighting into a vengeful and hateful beast that kept his siblings close partly to protect them but partly because he feared they would abandon him too.   And she would never forgive them for that.  She had been upset to learn he had killed their mother, but truthfully, she wished she could have done it herself.

She would have to wreck her vengeance on Mikael instead.  She could only hope that when his tormentor was finally dead that her brother could finally find peace.  Perhaps then she would see glimpses of the old Niklaus again.

But for now…She had a doppelganger to find.

-----

Klaus’s brow furrowed as he considered his conversation with his sister.

It seems things were getting lively in Mystic Falls.  Too lively.

He finally had a lead on his father’s whereabouts.  Fortuitous, but still he wished he had more time to prepare.

His Hybrids weren’t ready. They were meant to be his ace in his war against Mikael, but as they were now they were little more than cannon fodder.  It would take time and resources to turn them into capable warriors   able to last for more than a few seconds against the Destroyer.

Time was a luxury he no longer had. Not with Rebekah currently in the danger zone. He would have to come up with a new plan.     Unlocking his full hybrid abilities had given him a large boost in strength and speed, however, he was still reluctant to face Mikael in open battle.

His father had always been far stronger than them, a testament to the gap in their strength before they were turned.   He had also been an exceptional warrior and commander before they had even been born and was thus no slouch as a tactician.    Despite their own exceptional gifts, he had managed to corner his children many times over the centuries.

He would have to be cautious… Perhaps it was time to revisit mystic falls in secret and see what other assets he could acquire. Perhaps his hybrid could be of use there.

One could never have too many contingencies, after all.

But first… it was time to prepare for a family reunion.

---

The doppelganger was truly an idiot.

Still, she had her uses.

Thanks to some tears and a heavily edited version of their family history, the girl now believed that Rebekah was on their side in the plot to kill Klaus.   She revealed to the blonde that Mikael had contacted  the Salvatore’s  and that they needed her help drawing Klaus Back into town.

Elena was dancing in the palm of her hand.   Now If only Mikael was so easily deceived.  Her father would be suspicious and if she was too cordial or eager to help, and he would easily detect  she was being false.  Luckily, she had long since mastered hiding her lies with   acts of violence and emotion.    Elijah still had no idea it was her and not Kol that dyed his hair orange while he slept.  A few tears and a couple small fires and suddenly her youngest brother was taking the blame.

It would take a few days for Nik to arrive, plenty of time for her glean what information she could from the doppelganger and her friends. Damon thought he was clever, but his arrogance would be his downfall.  It wouldn’t be hard to get him gloating, and in that state, he would reveal anything she wanted to know.

She trusted Nik would have a plan. in fact, she had been with him so long, that she could probably guess some of the details.   But a few extra contingencies never hurt anyone.

And she was itching for blood. Time to grab a snack and drag some more information out of dear, sweet, Elena.

---

He thought about involving Tyler in his plan but thought better of it. The young hybrid was clearly more brawn than brains and given his lack of training, would be less than useless in the upcoming fight.

His Pretty blonde girlfriend, however, may be of more use.  She was close friends with the doppelganger, which means she was perfectly positioned to glean information and stab her in the back.

He would just have to be extra…. compelling.

He could see her now, making her way out of the mystic grill.

He liked the way she walked, full of poise and confidence. Her blonde hair seemed to glisten in the moonlight and the artist in him marveled at the way her smile lit up her face.

She was gorgeous, and briefly he wondered what it would be like to paint her.

Another time perhaps.

“Hello, Love” he said from behind her, enjoying the way she jumped.  He could see the recognition and fear in her eyes.  “I think it’s time we had a little chat.”

“Klaus.” she whispered.

“In the flesh. Now please accompany me somewhere more…private.  Lots of prying eyes around here. I’d hate to have to rip them all out.” his tone was light but firm. Clearly, he would have no issue carrying out his implied threat.  He motioned her to follow him and with a gulp she did.

He led her towards the woods, and when he was certain no one was near, he motioned her to sit on a nearby stump.

“Apologies for the rough accommodations. But discretion is essential in these matters. After all, it’s not every day that a group of kids start plotting with your father to kill you.”

She looked completely confused…interesting.

“Surely you are not unaware of the plots your friends are up to?  Dangerous alliances with an immortal hunter, all to assassinate little old me. I’m flattered really”

She had no idea what he was talking about. But that didn’t mean she was going to sit quietly and allow him to play games with her. “Good, you deserve to die for what you did to Elena’s aunt.  To Tyler…”

“I’m afraid the Doppelgangers aunt was mere collateral damage, a lesson for what happens when others interfere with my plans.  As far as your boyfriend goes, I merely made him better.   Has he not enjoyed being in control of his transformations?  He no longer suffers under the yoke of the full moon. You should be thanking me.”

She glared at him. “And all it cost him was his freedom…great tradeoff”

“If you are referring to the sire bond love, I’m afraid that’s a misconception.  He is more inclined to follow my orders that is true, but that’s mostly because I’m the alpha… Wolves are naturally more submissive to the strongest, and there is none stronger than I. Still, he isn’t forced to do anything he truly doesn’t wish to”

“Well, that’s surprisingly helpful information. It still doesn’t explain why you are stalking me and pulling me away for clandestine meetings…a bit creepy just so you know.”

“Well unfortunately it’s not just for the pleasure of your company. Your friends are trying to kill me, and obviously I cannot allow that to happen. So, you are going to be my little trojan horse.”

“I wouldn’t help you if you were on fire and there was a $10 billion dollar reward for saving your life.  In fact I’d probably just pour gasoline on it just so I could enjoy watching you burn”

“Well Rebecca would certainly appreciate your apparent fondness for setting people on fire.  Unfortunately, I’m not giving you a choice.”  She looked confused at first, but it quickly switched to horrified understanding when she saw his pupils dilate.   She lashed out quickly with a punch, but even caught off guard, Klaus  was able to dodge her attack with ease.

He looked amused now, but at least  his attempt at compulsion had failed. And she wasn’t going to allow him another one.

Her fangs descended and she launched herself full speed towards the hybrid.

They seemed to dance, as she tried with all her might to hit him, and he shrugged her attacks off with almost contemptuous ease.

She nearly screamed in frustration. No one would ever compel her again. For the first time since her rebirth she loosened her tight control over her instincts   and gave herself fully over to the vampire side .

The sudden increase in speed caught him by surprise and she landed a strong punch that sent him down on one knee.  She tried to follow it up with a knee to the face, but he caught it and in a burst of speed managed to subdue her, holding her arms down by her side while his breath caressed the back of her neck and sent unwanted shivers through her body.

“Simply incredible” he whispered in blatant admiration. “it’s been a long time since someone landed a hit on me, and never someone so young.”   He inhaled gently and felt a shiver as the spicy nature of her scent teased his senses.” It’s been a long time since I smelled beautiful in such a ferocious package.  Care to tell me why you flipped out over something as minor as a little compulsion”

She yanked from his grasp and to her relief he let her go.  Turning she looked him over, noticing for the first time the calm gait, smug smile, and gorgeous dimples that made her both want to punch him and run her fingers through his perfect locks

Of course, the devil would have the face of an angel.  He was calmly waiting for her response, clearly a man used to getting what he wanted. She debated blowing him off but decided she had likely pushed her luck by hitting him in the face.  It was certainly satisfying though.

“Oh sure, what’s wrong with a little mind control…” she spat angrily before sighing. “Clearly you have never been compelled before.”  He nodded. As an original he was immune to such things.

“Well, it sucks… I was controlled when I was a human… used and thrown away.  I will stake myself before I ever allow anyone to control me again” he felt his blood burn as his quick mind filled in the gaps of what she hadn’t shared with him. It wasn’t Katerina’s style. His old friend wasn’t that type of monster…which left… “Damon Salvatore.” he said and watched the confirmation in her eyes.

He considered this. technically there was nothing stopping him from continuing his plan and compelling an unwilling accomplice. But this girl had a strength and light about her that he was loathed to crush.

“Perhaps we can help each other then.” he said at last. “No mind control necessary. just mutual benefit. “

“I’m not going to help you hurt my friends Klaus. “

“Nor would I ask you too.  I merely want you to keep me notified of any plans they have and to prevent them from acting against me.  In return I offer them amnesty for any actions they have taken against me, and I'll even provide you Damon Salvatore’s head.”

The idea was appealing…he could see the consideration in her eyes.   Time to close the deal.” Your friends are children, meddling with beings beyond their understanding. All I need from Elena is a small blood donation and I will ensure she lives a long happy life, with many children. There is no need for us to be in conflict. In fact, it would behoove you and your friends to ally with me.”

Caroline was torn.     Seeing the bloody head of Damon Salvatore was definitely on her Christmas list. he had tortured her, fed on her, and used her as his toy, and no one, not even her best friend had said anything about it.  She loved Elena, had known her as long as she could remember, but the girl had a blind spot when it came to people, she cared about, and despite her protests it was clear she was developing some kind of feelings for the elder Salvatore.    Klaus’s deal would solve two problems with one head.

“Two conditions. First, Free Tyler from his sire bond. If he chooses to remain loyal to you after that, it’s his business. “She didn’t know enough about wolf dynamics to make that choice for him.

“And the second?”

“I want your word that you won’t harm any of my friends…I’ll talk to Elena about the blood donation. but no harm is to come to them from you.”

“I can certainly vow not to initiate conflict with them.  But retaliation against their own actions is a different matter entirely.”

“You’re immortal…it’s not like they can harm you anyway.

“Not being able to kill, and not being able to harm, are different things entirely, love.  Your best bet would be to convince them not to try anything against me.  “

“I’d have a better chance of draining the Mississippi with a straw.  Bonnie and Elena can be stubborn when their back is up. Once I accidentally tore the head off Bonnies favorite stuffed rabbit, and she didn’t speak to me for a week. “

“Accidentally love?”

“There may have been some retaliation involved for spilling grape juice on my poster of Justin Timberlake.”

He laughed heartily. “I see.  Well, I can see you are not someone I want as an enemy Caroline Forbes.  I’ll vow to show mercy where I can, provided you do your best to inform or head off any plots you learn of.   I do have one more request…optional of course”

She was wary but curious. “And what request is that?”

“Would you be willing to join me for dinner, once this unpleasant business is put behind us”

The stage was set.

her hostility was enough to fool Mikael, or at least she thought so.

One could never truly tell with him. Like Nik, he often hid his true thoughts behind threats and false smiles.

The doppelganger and the elder Salvatore were convinced. Elena was naïve and Damon had allowed their tumble in the sheets to make him feel he had power over her. only a man could be so foolish.

Still, she wasn’t one to stop her enemies when they were making a mistake.

She just had to make sure she hadn’t made any errors of her own.

The plan the Salvatore’s came up with was as complicated as it was foolish. It would never work. Not only was Klaus fully aware of where all the daggers that could incapacitate an original were. But the idea that Elena of all people could get the better of Mikael, was laughable.   even with the Salvatore’s help, Mikael could have torn them to pieces while drunk and blindfolded.

Even her own word in support of the events in questions wouldn’t have removed the suspicion from Nik at the story they came up with.  She could practically see his eyes roll as they spoke on the phone and she assured him that their father was indeed desiccated at the doppelganger’s hands.

She was tempted to attack while the man was incapacitated during the charade but hesitated. Her father was not a fool and if he was going along with such a simple plan then that mean he certainly had one of his own in the works.

men like him always did.

Still her blood boiled seeing him so close.  hearing him spout the same drivel about how righteous his hunt for Niklaus had been. as if he hadn’t terrorized them for years before they ever became vampires.

She would enjoy watching him burn.

but for now…its time dress for homecoming. She was looking forward to going with Matt.  The boy was sweet. and handsome. he had a quiet strength to him despite being human that she found interesting.   Just the sort of man she would take on her first school dance.

The fact that he would also be a good hostage against any trickery from the mystic falls gang was a bonus.

The dress she picked out was perfect.  red and form fitting. her blonde hair perfectly done and settling on her shoulders.  she looked like a queen and felt like one too.

‘Getting a head start huh?” said the voice of Elena behind her.

“Embarrassing truth. this is my first high school dance.”

“Ever?” said her surprised voice.

“It didn’t exist when I was alive. and we never had time as a vampire. always on the run” and ruling the supernatural world she thought silently.

“Is Damon and my father’s plan ready?” She asked, putting some emotion in her voice.

“Yes.” was the response. and her eyes narrowed although Elena couldn’t see it.

“Don’t tell me… I don’t want to know. “She let tears form in her eyes. “I just want to go to the dance and leave everything else to Damon and Mikael. “

“I know it’s hard.  so, thank you for helping us get Klaus back into town” the bitch…  thanking her for betraying her own blood.  as if she would make that mistake…. again.

“Just be careful” was all she said. “I’ve been running from my father for a thousand years for a reason. Mikael cannot be trusted… no one in my family can.”

“Are you okay?” asked Elena, moving closer to her.

“I have spent my life loving and hating my brother with equal measure.. I never thought I would be the one to help drive a stake through his heart” and I never will be… no one attacks my family and live.

she turned and faced the mirror. “No tears… How do I look?”

“Amazing.” said Elena. “you’re just missing one thing.”  Rebekah turned and saw her holding her necklace. Was the bitch really trying to gift her something that was already hers.

“You should wear it tonight… May I?”

Rebekah nodded and she felt the familiar weight of the necklace around her neck as Elena closed the clasp.

“Thank you” she said.   She then felt the hand on her arm tense and saw movement in the mirror.  With instincts born of a millennium of conflict, she backhanded the human girl and sent her slamming to the ground.  Blood began pouring out of the girl’s mouth and the dagger in her hand  crashed to the ground.

“Nice try, Elena. But unlike you I am far more than a pretty face. I smelled a trap the moment you entered the room. Now let’s get you healed up and help you forget about what happened here.”    With a dose of her blood the girls’ wounds were healed. she then used compulsion to make her forget what happened and believe that her plan to take her out was successful.

Rebekah waited in the shadows as Damon Salvatore showed up and Elena informed him that she was daggered and out of the game.  She listened with interest to their plan and learned that the gym had flooded, and the location of the party was moving.

clearly her brothers plan at work.

She grabbed the dagger and steeled herself.

Rebekah Mikaelson was going to war.

Caroline Forbes was pissed… First all the hard work she had put into the dance was made worthless because of a freak flood.    and her relief that Tyler was able to come through as a backup was tarnished when she realized that the party going on was incredible and better than the one, she came up with.

Considering Tyler was more of a doer than a planner, She suspected a certain original was behind this.

She wasn’t sure whether she wanted to thank him or kill him for salvaging the day.

She had laughed off his dinner request and reminded him that she had a boyfriend.  he merely informed her that he found her interesting, and that the invitation  did not have an expiration date on it.

Still, she could not deny that a part of her was thrilled at the genuine interest he seemed to have.   and she would be lying if she said he wasn’t devilishly attractive.

But right now, she had more important things to deal with.

Like keeping her friends alive.

She had been unable to glean much about their plans, and she couldn’t outright ask since she wasn’t supposed to know. a fact that was a bit hurtful.

She was the queen of planning. there was a reason she was head cheerleader and in charge of nearly every committee the school had.

Apparently, Klaus was the better party planner.   Was that a freaking band outside…

She was going to kill him. but damn if the music wasn’t incredible…

there were an awfully lot of people there…especially for a sudden change like this.

Plus, she knew most of the people at the school and in the town and there were quite a few unfamiliar faces.

Something was happening.

Sure, enough there was a commotion on stage and a familiar form appeared on stage.

“Good evening, everyone. I want to thank you all for being here with me to celebrate.   It’s been a long time coming” Klaus declared to the confused applause of the onlookers.

Seeing the surprised look on Stefan’s face. she made her way back inside and saw Elena with Matt.  Now that was interesting because last time she checked the quarterback was going with Rebekah.

Hoping to glean some more information she made her way over to him, holding back a frown when she heard Elena tell Matt that she was coming and that she didn’t know anything.

Her friends were actively keeping a secret from her. and she could not deny it hurt to be left out. plus did Elena forget she had vampire hearing? she was only a few feet away from her when the girl started whispering

“Klaus is here” she said and noticed that neither looked shocked at this. “You aren’t surprised?”

“I try not to be surprised at anything Klaus does” said Elena before leaving to find bonnie.

Matt made a similar excuse and left… Living a fuming Caroline behind him.

Making her way back outside she noticed Stefan walking with Klaus.

being careful not to be seen, she mingled with the dancers and listened as best she could.

“Quite the homecoming,” said Stefan.

“I have been planning my father’s funeral for a thousand years. granted in my version none of these people were here. but you get the idea.”

“So, what now. you just stop running?”

“Now? I reunite my family” There was an earnestness in the way he said this, that she doubted Stefan caught.  Klaus may have been an evil, sadistic bastard. but he clearly loved his family.

“Your family?  the people that you cart around in caskets?”

“None of that matters anymore.  Mikael is gone. and we have an eternity to heal old wounds.  bygones will be bygones” A woman in a tiara walking passed… caught his attention.

“It appears the homecoming queen is still alive… means my sister isn’t here.. where is she?” Klaus smiled darkly. “Rebekah isn’t one not to take center stage at a party like this.”

“I have no idea, I thought she was coming with Matt. “

Clearly Klaus wasn’t fooled and looked at Stefan with disappointment. “Be honest now old friend.  where is my sister?”

“I have no idea.  now would you like me to take you to your father?”

“Well, it would be rude to continue this without the guest of honor… be a good lad and fetch him for me.”

“And if I do…  will you grant my freedom from your compulsion?”

“Of course. once my father is dead and his weapon is destroyed, you shall have your freedom.” He grinned.” I’m a man of my word Stefan. You remember that.” Stefan nodded and disappeared with vamp speed.

“You can stop eavesdropping now Caroline.” he said.  and she sheepishly made her way towards him.

“Stefan’s acting strange.” she commented.

“I’m aware.  he’s managed to navigate the loopholes in the compulsion I set to work against me.  Its why I don’t use compulsion much. Blunt tool compared to real loyalty.  but on to more important topics… Like how ravishing you look”

“Thanks. but you wouldn’t have anything to do with why the gym flooded and all my hard work washed away with it.?” he gave her an innocent smile.

“Guilty as charged love, but don’t worry, I’ll make it up to you.  I needed an easy way to get a few of my friends in for the big event… care for a dance…?”

There was something in his eyes, so she nodded and he swirled her close.

The seemed to be in perfect sync as they ebbed to the music and for a moment, she thought she saw contentment in his eyes before they hardened. “Something is up. I need you to find Rebekah. I fear something untoward has happened to her.” he spun her around again and placed his hands on her hips, leaning in so close that she could feel his breath softly across her skin.

“And how will she know I’m on her side?”

He looked thoughtful… before a smiled blossomed on his face.  “if anyone approaches just use the phrase “Kol looks better in a dress than  you do”. she’ll know it came from me. “

She was very tempted to ask the origins of such a phrase but decided against it, as she saw Tyler drawing near.  she nodded and vanished.

She was stealthily looking through rooms when Tyler entered the room.

“What are you up to with Klaus?” he asked angrily.

She hesitated. “What do you mean.?”

“He’s on to you Caroline. Whatever you all think you’re about to pull off. he’s two steps ahead of you. He has dozens of hybrids waiting in the wings.”

“Look it’s not like that…just let me.”

“save it Caroline,” Tyler said, rolling his eyes in exasperation. “You’re lying to me…”

“Actually, I’m trying to explain… I don’t know what Elena and the others are up to.. But I made a deal with Klaus.”

“A deal? what kind of deal. “

“A deal that frees you from the sire bond and ensures that none of our friends get slaughtered for picking a fight with a guy who’s been killing people since like biblical times.”

“You’re lying…” he said again. “Klaus would have told me… Look whatever you are really up to, it’s not going to work.”

“You’re an ass Tyler.  look I don’t care if you don’t believe me. I’ve got to find Rebekah before Klaus goes on a rampage…”

She moved to push passed him when he grabbed her and injected a syringe in her neck…

Vervain .she thought before passing out.

Klaus wanted to laugh he really did.

Did Katerina really think he would be so easily fooled?

As if he couldn’t tell the subtle differences in how she carried herself versus her human counterpart.  Katerina carried herself like royalty, as if the world should be fortunate to have her in it. nothing at all like the awkward uncertainty of Elena. not to mention the clear scent of vampire that was obvious to his werewolf senses.

it was so pathetic, he half hoped that the woman had been compelled to play along.

“You seem nervous” he said, deciding to play along with this farce.

“I’m not nervous, I just don’t like you.”

“Well fair enough. allow me to get straight to the point love. people have been after me for 1,000 years and I am always one step ahead… so whatever you are up to. give it your best shot. “

“it won’t be for a lack of trying…” muttered Katherine.

Klaus held back a laugh “ do tell your friends to be on their best behavior… even in death my hybrids have their orders.  if I die… so do all of you”

Rebekah made her way stealthily through the Lockwood manor, grateful she had asked Tyler for an invitation beforehand. Speaking of, she watched in amusement as he bantered with matt and asked him to carry Caroline out of the party.  She doubted the girl would be pleased about being knocked unconscious by her boyfriend.

She had set men on fire for far less.  Still, she decided to follow the boy and witnessed his little scuffle with Damon Salvatore.  the two fought briefly and she watched in surprise as he pulled out a familiar stake to try and fend off the hybrid.

Could he really be so foolish?

Noticing the Bennet Witch approaching to intervene, she stealthily snuck behind the girl and knocked her out. meanwhile Damon had thrown the young hybrid against the wall and with a snarl stabbed in in the heart with the white oak stake. Tyler looked shocked before he let out a small scream as he died.

Damon panted and then watched in horror as the white oak stake burned up.

“Using up your only weapon against an Original on a regular vampire … it appears Stefan’s inherited all the brains in the Salvatore Family.”  he turned around in shock, only to feel a powerful feminine hand around his throat.

“I knew you were a fool beyond being a lousy fuck, but this is dumb even for you” Damon struggled and batted against the hand holding him up to no avail.

“No need for words little one. I just need your heart.”   With a grin Rebekah ripped through his chest and pulled out his heart.

That was satisfying.

“Bloodthirsty as always little sister,” said a familiar voice.

She turned around in surprise only to see the lanky form of her youngest brother standing before her, looked as amused as usual.

“Kol.” she said near breathlessly before gathering him into a hug.

“It’s been a long time little sister.” he said. “You didn’t think Nik would leave us out of the fun, did you?”

“You never know with Nik.  He doesn’t like us being in the crossfire with Mikael. “

Kol looked somber at that.  even as a child Niklaus had done his best to shield them from Mikael's wrath. “well, the family that slays together, stays together I suppose.  Perhaps he thought it would earn him forgiveness for the last century in the box. “

Rebekah snorted.  as if. Nik was not one to seek forgiveness, especially when he thought himself in the right. however, speaking of daggers.

“Kol…I’m..”

“Save it, Bekah. “He gave her his trademark mocking grin. “We have the next couple centuries to make it up to me, but for now I believe it’s time we become orphans... oh, and save the head, apparently Nik has promised it to someone.”

Klaus nursed his drink in contemplation.  So far, his plan was going as expected.  By moving the party here, he made it impossible for Mikael to enter. this would force him to give up his best weapon, the white oak staff.  He likely entrusted it to one of the Salvatore’s in the hopes they could take him from behind.

He had contingencies for that as well.  When Mandy approached him, he knew it was time.

“You have a visitor waiting for you… says his name is Mikael.”

“Well let’s not keep dear old dad waiting.   move everyone out back” the black girl nodded and left.

Making his way to the front door, he nearly snarled at the calm demeanor of the man waiting there, looking down at him with disdain. as he had always looked at him.

“Hello Niklaus,” said Mikael. Almost Pleasantly.

“Hello, father... won’t you come in? oh wait, you can’t”

“Don’t call me that boy.  and you can certainly come outside… if you aren’t still the sniveling whelp you were 1,000 years ago.”

“Or I can watch my hybrids rip you limb from limb” returned Klaus. he motioned behind Mikael where a dozen hybrids had gathered behind him.

“You and I both know your little pawns can’t kill me.”

“True… but it’ll make one hell of a party game. with a snap of my fingers. They’ll pounce.”

Mikael smirked. “The big bad wolf… still a lonesome bastard, I see.  you haven’t changed. still hiding like a coward behind your playthings. You forget boy… that while they may be sired to you… they are still vampires… and can be compelled by me.”  Mandy moved up to stand next to him. carrying a struggling Katherine who was still pretending to be Elena.

“Come out and face me Niklaus. Or your Precious Doppelganger dies.”

Klaus bit his lip to hide his amusement. “Go ahead and kill her”

Katherine looked stunned. “No please… Klaus, he really will do it.”

‘Yes, I’m aware of that ‘he thought. he’s called the destroyer for a reason.

“If she dies…this lot will be the last of your abominations “said Mikael with disgust.

“Maybe I don’t need them. I just need to be rid of you…”

“To what end, Niklaus?  To live forever with no one at your side” He snarled with scorn at the look of discomfort on his former son’s face. “Nobody cares about you anymore, Boy!  Even Rebekah has turned against you. who do you have other than those who you carry around in boxes or whose loyalty you’ve forced? no one.”

“I’m afraid that’s not entirely true” said a cultured voice from behind.   Before Mikael could turn a strong blow slammed into him from behind.  the man looked in horror as the regal and imposing form of Elijah stood next to him.  He moved to retaliate when another blow hit him from the left… he turned to see a smirking Kol… gripping his left arm.

“Nik may be a raging bastard sometimes … but he is still our brother…” said Rebekah as she gripped their father from behind and slid the Dagger into his back…  Mikael could only watch in horror as he started to turn gray before Klaus rushed him with a yell and stabbed him in the chest with a stake he pulled from his vest.

The destroyer screamed as his flesh burned until there was nothing left of him or the stake.

The Mikaelson siblings stared briefly at the ashes that had been their father. their tormentor for centuries. They were now free.

“Thank you for your help.” said Klaus finally…

“Always and forever, Brother… Don’t tell me you have forgotten the words to our vow…  Now if you would excuse me. I would like to have some words with Katerina.”

“Indeed. She is yours to do with as you will… she has her freedom if you so wish it… there is no longer a reason for any of us to run.”

“Thank you, brother.” Elijah nodded and vanished in the direction of Katherine, swooping her up and vanishing in a flash.

“Well, that was fun. I’m going to go check on that delicious witch lying unconscious upstairs… lot of power in that one.” said Kol before vanishing in a flash.

“How does it feel to be an orphan, little sister?”

“Incredible. Speaking of great feelings. your little hybrid friend is dead…killed by Damon Salvatore.”

Klaus frowned but shrugged. that was unfortunate… Caroline would not be pleased but it was hardly his fault. and he would hardly complain about one less suitor in his way.

“And where is the eldest Salvatore.?”

“Dead.  I left his Head in a box in the library…  Be sure to deliver it to Caroline with my compliments.” she smirked.” You may want to clean up a bit before trying to use your dull courtship techniques on the cheerleader. you look like a wreck.”

“Duly noted, little sister.”

The aftermath was not fun.

He had his hybrids clean up the bodies and wipe the memories of any lingering witnesses.

Stefan was granted his freedom, although he looked furious when he learned of his brother’s death.

He did seem relived to know that Elena was safe, and Klaus let him know that as long as Elena stayed out of his way and agreed to a small blood donation every week, she would have no interference in her life from him.

The last remaining Salvatore merely nodded and left, and Klaus made a mental note to keep an eye out for him. Right now, he had more important things to deal with. Like the form stirring in the next room. In a blur of speed, he was at the door, watching her groggily awaken.

She looked confused when she saw him…

“What’s going. on. are you here to kill me or something?”

“You really think that low of me? after all we’ve been through love.”

She scowled slightly but shook her head.  he was not the hybrid whose head she was going to ring.

“Where is Tyler… I owe him an ass kicking for stabbing me.”

Klaus’s face fell.

“Klaus… what happened. is he okay?”

“I’m afraid not love. He was killed… staked by Damon Salvatore.”

She burst into tears and screamed with rage… “I’m going to kill him…”

“I’m afraid someone else beat you to it… But his head is there in the box on the dresser”

She looked stunned and then resigned and rage left her eyes only to be replaced with sorrow.

“I’m sorry for your loss Caroline…  I do want you to know I kept my word. Elena and Stefan are free.  My father is dead. Your friends have nothing more to fear from me.”

“Thank you” she said softly. Her heart clearly not into it.

“If it’s not too forward. would you care to join me for a drink?” he held up a bottle of whiskey.” it seems we both have something to mourn today”

She nodded silently and took the glass he poured and shot it back, before motioning for him to pour another.

“What are you mourning.” she asked quietly.” Shouldn’t you be celebrating your big victory.”

“I suppose I am…and yet…” He glanced down at the somber look in her eyes before sighing.” My father has always hated me… even before we turned, and he found out I wasn’t his… he always looked at me with such scorn… he mocked my fighting. my art… nothing I did was good enough for him.  I’m glad he is dead… and yet… I also feel a tad lost.  For 1,000 years we have been on the run from him…and now we are free. I suppose I’m lost as to what comes next.”

“That’s sad. But at least you have your family. Wait a minute… the big bad wolf is an artist?”

“Yes… One of my landscapes is actually in the Hermitage… not that anyone would notice.” he seemed almost bashful now. more a normal boy than the vengeful monster she knew he could be.   She gave him as much of a smile as she could muster and downed her drink.

They passed the night in silence. Lost in memories, allowing the warmness of the alcohol to burn away the hurt.
