Work Text:

She wasn’t breathing properly. The blood was pouring. She could barley move let alone respond. Her body was still. He couldn’t believe it. There’s no way….she can’t be….

“Anya!” Damian ran over to her body. Tears stung in his eyes. “Don’t die. Please don’t fucking die.” Damian tried to shake her awake. No reaction, she remained motionless on the ground. He took his imperial scholar cape and tried wrapping the wound. “Don’t you dare give me that look. You can’t just leave like this!” His voice cracked, tears spilling down his cheeks, dripping onto Anya’s face. She didn’t respond at all. Damian held back a sob. “God please let this not be real.” His heart dropped. This can’t be true. The world started tilting around him. Damian clutched at his head as he fell forward. Falling onto his knees, he buried his face into his hands. “Please don’t take her away from me.” He wept in despair, shaking. “Please dont take her! I never even got to tell her…” The rest of his words disappeared into broken sobs. After what seemed like an eternity Damian slowly lifted his head and gazed at Anya. His chest tightened. A lump formed in his throat, blocking the airway. “It…it can’t be….Anya please say something.” She’s not gone..she can’t be. He’s just having a nightmare right? Damian shook himself, tears still falling. “What happened to your stupid ass smile? Don’t go now. You’re supposed…you’re supposed to be right by my side!” Damian looked at her as his eyes filled with my tears. He felt the tears pouring out and he couldn’t do anything about it. “Anya, please...” he begged silently as tears streamed down his cheeks even more.

Becky had arrived with some police officers and an ambulance. They checked Anya over quickly for any signs of life before turning their attention to Damian. Becky’s mouth opened in horror as one of the medics shook their head. Tears welled up in Becky’s eyes. She fell on her knees beside Damian. “No. Please no.” Becky’s hands began trembling as she looked down at the corpse. A sob wracked through her body. It felt like time froze but Becky couldn’t stop crying. How…how could it be…How is it possible?! Why would this happen? “There’s no way.”
The paramedics worked fast to clean the blood that seeped out. They cleaned Anya up and wrapped her in blankets. As soon as they were done, the medics wheeled her off into the back of the ambulance. Becky and Damian stood up and turned to each other. They couldn’t speak. They didn’t know what to think, what to say. “They’ll bring her back, won’t they?” Becky managed to get out. Her voice was hoarse.
Damian nodded, unable to speak. He knew she wouldn’t come back, that Anya had really passed. He’d lost his entire world. And he didn’t even get to tell her how he felt.

“Sy-on boy! Can I come to your house?” Anya giggled as she poked at Damian for the fifth time that week about coming over to his house.

“No! Stop asking me weirdo..” He turned away. His face slightly red.

“But...but whyyyy?!” Anya complained. Her nose wrinkling, giving a pouty appearance as she threw her little arms out dramatically.
Damian groaned, rolling his eyes. This girl was too much.

“Because I said so! God, leave me be!” He walked away to his seat with his two lackies.

Anya had a big smile on her face and Becky was confused. “Why are you smiling?”

“That’s the closest Anya has gotten! He didn’t insult Anya as much as he normally does!” She made an evil grin towards Becky and Becky was only more confused. Anya looked behind her seat to watch Damian. He caught her staring and his face heated.

“Quit it!!!”

*Ring Ring*

Damian woke up to his alarm and laid on the bed with his eyes open. For a minute, everything was blurry. His memories of that night came rushing back to him. Anya dying. That horrible feeling of helplessness. The shock. The realization he could have prevented it if he had been there to hold her hand instead of letting her slip through his fingers. Damian felt empty. Like nothing mattered anymore. He knew in reality he couldn’t have saved her but it still ate him up inside.

“Why…” He couldn’t move. He knew school was going to start soon but he couldn’t move. His body was glued onto the bed and his heart ached and ached. Ever since she passed he had been having dreams of past memories. Just to wake up with the harsh reality hitting him.

He won’t ever get to see her smile. Her dumb laugh. He won’t ever get to talk to her again. He won’t get to think of how cute she is when she does the bare minimum. How kind she is to everyone. How she laughs until she cries, how bright her aura was. He wanted to marry that girl. He wanted to live the rest of their lives together. He wanted to spend forever with Anya. Damian cried out, his whole body shuddering from the pain. Anya. The love of his life... gone.

“Damian can you solve for X?” The teacher asked Damian as he was staring blankly at his hand. He had gotten to hold her hand a few times. That was nice. Her hand fit perfectly in his…it was adorable. It felt warm and soft. “Ahem. Mr.Desmond?” The teacher asked again. “If you could try to answer…that would be great.”

“Oh yeah. Of course, um.” Damian snapped out of it and cleared his throat. “Um…the last number is 4 because 5 equals…” Damian paused trying to think of a logical answer. Truth he told he couldn’t focus. His grades had slipped drastically ever since she passed. He was always zoning out in class.. He couldn’t concentrate anymore. His mind was constantly thinking of her. Thinking of every kiss and hug she gave him. Every word the two shared. Each touch. He remembered every moment of the years with her, all of that down the drain. In anyone else’s eyes it looked like they were dating. But he never even popped the question. He was too much of a coward. He was a scared child. Not like Anya who never backed down from a challenge. She was a determined and stubborn girl. Which he loved. “I mean…um…what does the last digit matter?”
The teacher laughed at the joke he pulled out.

“Funny. Is something up Mr.Desmond?” The teacher was a mix of annoyed and concerned.

“Sorry…I spaced out.” Damian mumbled.
He was used to that happening now. He couldn’t help it. There just was no point anymore. He was tired, depressed. He felt numb. Like he wasn't alive anymore. Everything was moving so slow and it hurt so bad. Even walking was painful now. He was barely able to walk to his classes let alone pay attention to them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
His life had really turned upside down since she left it. Nothing felt the same. Nothing felt good. His heart constantly felt numb. Why is the world so cruel? Why did they have to take her from him?? He couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t eat. No matter what he tried. All he kept seeing in his mind were those lifeless green eyes staring back at him. He missed her so much. And he wished everyday that he could go back and change what happend. If only things could be that easy.
“Dude?” Emile tapped his shoulder. Damian had been sitting by a tree near the greenhouse. Anya and Damian spent many moments over there. But now..it’s just a memory. Damian looked up to his friend, with his soulless eyes. Emile stared at him sympathetically. “You okay? You seem kinda spaced out. Are you thinking about…her?”
Damian looked down again. “It hurts too much to think about it sometimes…” He closed his eyes tightly and tried to forget about her. He knew he couldn’t no matter how much he tried. “A part of me wants to believe she’s still here too.” Damian whispered as tears spilled forth.
Emile reached out to him, but decided to just stay in place. He couldn’t do anything for Damian now. He was already broken beyond repair. Emile couldn’t help him right now. All he could do now was be there. “I’m gonna get you some water. It looks like you could use it.” Emile got up and went to the school cafeteria to get him some water.
Damian stared at the grass. He was completely numb inside and out. “Damian? What’s wrong? Don’t be sad!” He looked up and saw Anya standing in front of him. He couldn’t believe it. He didn’t understand how this was possible. He shook his head slowly and stood up to greet her.
“Hey.” was all he could say. Still in shock that she was right there. “I can’t believe it! You’re okay!! You aren’t…..” He began to choke on his tears.
“Oh Damian.” She smiled sweetly. “This isn’t real. We both know it. You’re hallucinating again.”
