Work Text:

Physical Education was never Veronica Sawyer’s strong suit. This was made clear when she got trampled by a stampede of over-eager seniors trying to get to the end of a race she knew she wasn’t going to win regardless. And, furthermore, one particularly careless student stood right on top of the brunette’s arm, the pain accompanied by an unsettling CRACK!

“You alrigh’ over there, Sawyer?” Asked the Coach, barely a hint of concern in his tone.

“What part of me looks alright?!” Is what Veronica wanted to shout, considering she was curled on the ground with her injured arm held tightly to her chest, as if that would help ease the pain.

Instead, she just let out a soft cry, tears welling in her eyes. She was so embarrassed. All of the other students were off and away on their second lap, including her boyfriend, J.D., who hadn’t noticed her absence, probably due to the fact he was trying not to have an asthma attack.

PE was never one of Jason Dean’s strong suits, either. Sure, he could fight, decently at least (not like Kurt and Ram were much competition), and he had a fairly good physique, (in Veronica’s eyes, anyway), but when it came to any length of exercise, that’s where his limits will lie.

So, whilst the injured girl waited for her asthmatic boyfriend to get back, she tried to shuffle her way off of the track as much as she could, letting out small whimpers of pain as she did. Her arm hurt like hell, and the Coach was far too distracted by the girls in their skimpy outfits to do anything.

After awhile, (awhile being like, 30 seconds, but hours for Veronica) J.D. and the rest of her class return, all only casting her a short glance before going back to doing their dumb athletics shit. All but J.D., who soon collapsed down next to her, his chest rising and falling quickly as took a few sips from his water bottle (Veronica is convinced that water is at least a day old, her boyfriend can be gross sometimes), and shuffled over to her.

“You- you alright?” He asked, his soft (and exasperated) smile diminishing into a concerned glare as the bloodshot eyes that looked at him tearfully became more evident. “Woah- hey, what happened?” He brushed a few strands of hair away from her face, tilting his head.

“I think it’s broken-“ she sniffed, nodding her head to her slightly purple-looking arm.

“It certainly doesn’t look intact”, the boy thought, moving closer to take a look at it. “Fuck, that looks bad, did you fall or something?” He asks, receiving another sniffily nod from the blue clad girl. “Alrigh’, wanna go to the nurse or something?”, she nods again, using her non-injured hand against J.D.’s shoulder to help herself up, followed by J.D. himself, making sure she’s steady.

After an exceedingly boring few hours, where Veronica and J.D. were sat in the waiting room of Sherwood, Ohio’s rather small hospital, Veronica was finally allowed to go home, with a navy blue cast and a hefty medical bill (“Fuck American heathcare.”, J.D. had murmured and insisted to help pay for, much to Veronica’s disapproval).

Now, they were back at her house, watching some crap on their old television.

“‘Ronica- I know it’s itchy but you have to stop picking at it, you’re gonna destroy the cast.”

“I know but it’s sooo annoying!” She groaned, rolling her eyes dramatically.

“You know what’s annoying, medical bills, so drink your slushy and try to ignore it.” He reminded dryly, bringing her slushie up to her lips, which she took a sip of (J.D. rolling his eyes because she was perfectly capable of holding the drink with her other hand.)

“Does it still hurt?” He asks, starting on a bag of Corn Nuts.

“Eh, not really. It does when I like, move it a lot or put pressure on it, but I’ve still got whatever drugs they gave me, so it fine.” She says, shrugging before wincing in pain, going back to sipping her slushie.

He nods, going back to watching whatever crap they had on the TV. After awhile, Veronica slowly started to doze off, and as a result fell asleep onto J.D.’s shoulder. He smiles, leaning his head against hers, taking in the scent of her coconut shampoo, and soon enough, he was fast asleep too, leaving their worries and half-melted slushies behind.
