Work Text:
“Hey Charlie? I could use your help with a little project.”
Dean is nervous and excited to talk to his friend about his idea. He knows her larping skills paired with her IT knowledge are needed, and since she knows about Match Made In Heaven and Castiel being an angel, he hopes she will help him.
“Sure, Dean. What’s up?” The energetic redhead smiles brightly and Dean braces for the squeal he will get out of her with what he has to say.
“I want to surprise Cas with something special for our wedding.”
Charlie lets out a high-pitched sound that probably scares away every bat in a 5 mile radius. Once she has calmed down again, Dean starts explaining his vision. He shows her the sketches he drew since Cas proposed the weekend prior.
“Do you think this is even possible?”
He nervously chews his lip while he watches her go over his drawings again.
“So you want this part to unfold? And these are supposed to move with a twitch of your shoulder?”
When Dean nods in the affirmative, Charlie’s face lights up.
“I’ve always wanted to make something like this! You came to the right girl. Is it okay if I ask Anna for help?”
Dean isn’t surprised she wants to ask her girlfriend for help. Anna is an engineer and also Castiel’s cousin, so Dean would have been more surprised if Charlie didn’t involve her.
___
Over the next two months they have a meeting in Charlie’s apartment at least once a week and Dean is really happy with how the project evolves.
“I must say you two are an amazing team. I thought this would take longer to finish. And I didn’t expect this to be so lightweight.”
“You did involve an aircraft engineer.” Anna smiles proudly.
The women watch Dean twist and turn in front of the mirror while opening and closing the device and watching the colors.
“Cas is going to love this,” Charlie tells him, and he thinks the same.
___
The wedding is the day after tomorrow and Dean has had to contain himself from blowing the surprise more and more the closer their big day moves. They will have a human ceremony with their friends, family and co-workers, and afterwards they will have the angelic union ceremony with just their brothers, Charlie, and Anna attending.
“I can’t wait to be mated to you,” Castiel murmurs into Dean’s ear before bed. “Too bad we won’t be able to see each other before the ceremony after tonight.”
“I can't wait to be your mate either, Cas. Is it too late to elope?”
“I don't think the guests will like that, Dean. Bobby is flying in just to see you ‘get hitched’ as he put it. I am not ready to feel the wrath of him.” A laugh rumbles through his chest.
Dean joins in while holding onto the arm wrapped around his chest a little tighter.
“Don't tell Bobby, but he's the only reason I didn't just drag you to the courthouse the day after you proposed.”
___
“Are you ready, boy?” Bobby's voice shakes Dean out of his reverie.
“Uh, yeah. I'm just trying to get this tie on. It keeps either being too short or too long.” He almost threw it out a few times already but without it, today wouldn’t feel special enough.
“Gimme that.”
Bobby grabs the tie out of Dean’s hand and starts tying it around Dean’s neck. With just a few practiced moves, the tie sits perfectly and Bobby buttons Dean’s vest over it.
“Well look at that. You clean up nice, boy.”
“Thanks, Bobby.”
“You’re welcome. Now let’s get this show on the road before your beau decides to ditch you at the altar for being late.”
“I hope you remember your lines.” Dean laughs and ducks his head before Bobby’s hand gets a chance to slap it.
___
Cas looks stunning in his white suit with his blue boutonniere and emerald pocket square. Bobby stands behind him waiting to officiate the ceremony. Dean can see the second Cas notices him because his face lights up in a gummy smile. This in turn makes Dean smile equally wide and he slowly walks up to his soon-to-be husband.
With a speech about what it means to be married, and a few well placed jokes, Bobby makes quick work of getting them to the important part.
With watery eyes, Cas says his vows. He talks about how Dean changed him, and how he will always love Dean. Shaky hands put the ring on Dean’s finger.
“I had a whole epic speech prepared, but seeing you stand before me, I forgot everything I wanted to say. So all I’m going to say is this: I will gladly get old and wrinkly by your side, because you are my best friend, and your love is my most prized possession on this Earth. You are the love of my life and with you by my side, nothing will get me down.”
He puts the ring on Cas’s finger and before Bobby gets a chance to tell them to kiss, Dean dips Cas low in a passionate kiss.
The crowd claps loudly and Bobby pats their shoulders once they are both standing again.
___
After the last guest has left the reception, and only Sam, Gabe, Anna, and Charlie are left, Gabe gets serious. The sight is a little weird, since this is an unusual side of the angel.
“Are you two ready?” Gabriel asks.
“Give me a minute. I have to get something first,” Dean says.
He leaves the room for even less than that and when he returns, the light chatter of the group dies down. When he sees Cas turn his way, Dean shrugs his shoulders like he practiced with Charlie and Anna. Cas gasps audibly. Their brothers do too, but Cas is the only one that matters to him.
“Oh Dean.” The pure admiration in Cas’s voice is enough to tell him that his surprise landed perfectly.
On his back the wings move just like they were real.
“You mentioned a wing embrace as part of the mating ritual, and I wanted you to get the closest experience to that a human could do.”
“You are perfect, Dean. I couldn’t wish for a better mate than you!”
“Now let’s do this, before I regret giving him wings.” Anna smiles.
Gabriel starts the chant that will entwine Dean’s soul with Cas’s grace, and the shining light emanating from the couple is mesmerizing. Blue and green swirl around each other and look like a whole galaxy is forming. As the chant reaches the end, their now mixed energy splits up and enters them both simultaneously, while Dean wraps his mechanical wings around Cas and Cas wraps his wings around them both.
When the spectacle ends, and Cas folds his wings back, everyone gasps.
What used to be mechanical wings, has transformed and a pair of actual wings has replaced them.
“Cas?” Dean’s eyes are wide in shock. “Did you know this would happen?”
“I’ve only heard about this in fairy tales.” Anna whispers.
Cas’s eyes reflect the amazement at the display.
“I knew your love for me was pure, Dean. But if I’d known this could really happen, I would've told you.”
