Chapter 1: The Morning is Beautiful

Chapter Text

Korra’s eyes opened the second her body started to register the start of a new day. Excited butterflies flew at warp speed in her stomach and she turned over to the other side of the bed, feeling like a little kid again who was waking up on Christmas morning.

This particular day held the same level of joy.

The warmth of the rising sun bled through the windows, lovingly kissing the skin of the most beautiful woman Korra has ever known. It was truly mind boggling how right she looked this way, but also how sensible it was because it was her. The way she was glowing on her own lately, she shouldn’t expect anything less.

And to think, the mornings used to be so incredibly evil. Now, they’re the best part of the day.

All thanks to the fact that when she opens her eyes every morning she’s greeted by a face only Raava could carve. Dark locks that rivaled the night for its mystique, skin softer than the expensive pillows they slept on, and lips that always demanded to be kissed by how tempting they were. The exquisite body tucked underneath the fancy comforter was still to die for, even after everything it’s been through the last ten years— especially over the last year. She’d always say it was worth it, though, so Korra tried to keep that in mind whenever she’d worry.

As the sun continued its ascent Korra moved closer to her beautiful wife. Like she did every morning, she watched her closely and grinned at every small breath taken. Poor thing was exhausted after last night’s preparation dinner and deserved the deep sleep she was having. She looked so beautiful when she left the house, a stunning jumpsuit paired with a blazer for a classy look that in her words wasn’t too flashy. That would be reserved for tonight’s event.

Korra smiled thinking about it. She wanted to go to with her last night and show her support, but was told that it was just another work thing. Only thing special was that there would be food and shitty wine that she couldn’t even drink. She graciously insisted that Korra didn’t need to come last night, so tonight was going to be that much more special. She couldn’t wait to see the results of all her hard work and planning. The long days and even longer evenings were bound to be worth it.

“Hmmmm,” the dreamy hum made Korra’s heart melt in her chest.

Asami. Even saying her name softly in her head had the same sweet taste as it did coming out of her mouth. She kept her eyes on her, too enamored to look away. She was glad that Asami took her advice and decided not to go into the office so early. It gave her the opportunity to ensure that she wouldn’t be going into the office at all.

She’s going to be so annoyed, her inner voice chuckled, but I’ll make sure she gets over it verrrry quickly.

Her smile grew as she reached over to gently move a strand of hair out of the way. Her view was not allowed to be blocked, not even by a piece belonging to Asami.

For the next fifteen minutes Korra didn’t move a muscle. All she wanted was to admire the love she never felt like she deserved, but busted her ass to earn. Korra loved quiet moments like this where she could bask in the fruits of her labor without any interference. She studied and re-memorized every line, every shadow, and distinct feature on Asami while she slept. Every detail still managed to take her breath away, even after ten years. So soft, so delicate, while also so strong and powerful. The woman was a marvel, even while asleep.

She’ll always be beautiful.

Finally unable to resist any longer, Korra leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on the precious lips that for whatever reason she was lucky enough to lay claim to. Ten years and more, Korra would probably always be in awe that she’s able to call Asami hers. After placing perhaps one too many indulgent kisses, her wife stirred.

“Mmm, Korra?”

Whoops, heh. Asami would’ve flicked her forehead if she heard her thoughts. She may not have intended to wake her, but she certainly wasn’t sorry that she did. Just meant that she could see those gorgeous eyes dance in the sunrise.

“Morning, Asami.”

“Mmm, good morning.”

“Sorry, I woke you.”

Asami opened her eyes and took one look at Korra’s remorseless smirk and chuckled. “Liar.”

Her groggy voice was so cute that Korra couldn’t handle it. “Okay, maybe I’m not.”

She wrapped her arms around Asami’s waist and pulled her in, their bodies exchanging a fantastic heat from the closeness. She buried her hand in the thick mop of hair and played in its lusciousness. Asami hummed in delight in return.

“You just look so pretty in the morning, baby.” She lifted Asami’s chin just slightly to lean into her target.

Asami let out a soft moan the second she felt Korra’s lips on her neck, already teasing her sweet spot. “I have bedhead, eye crusts, and I’m pretty sure I drooled last night, so I’ll bet there’s a little–”

“Doesn’t matter,” Korra kissed her jawline, “so pretty, and sexy.”

When Asami held her closer in response she knew she’d said the right thing. She hadn’t given much indication that her confidence had been shaken because of her current state, but Korra knew Asami. She would be so busy focusing on the positives that she wouldn’t allow herself the space to work through any potential negatives. So it was Korra’s job to reassure her and remind her of how gorgeous she was and always will be.

When she sucked hard on a particular spot under her jaw Asami gasped, “Korra.”

“Yes?” Her hands roamed for a moment before finding purchase on Asami’s ass, gripping and squeezing.

“You better not just be working me up.”

“Definitely not. As stunning as you look in the sunlight–”

“Wait, sunlight?” Asami stopped her and pulled away, looking past Korra for the first time since opening her eyes. Those same eyes widened with surprise as they took in that the sun was indeed higher in the sky than it should be.

“What time is it?” She didn’t wait for the answer, turning to her nightstand to grab her alarm clock. Her turned off alarm clock.

She slowly turned to look at Korra with a sad attempt of an angry face painted on.

Heh, here we go.

“You didn’t.”

Korra laid back down with her hands behind her head, not so subtly flexing her arms. Best to play a little dirty, just in case. “Did it go off?”

“Korra…”

She shrugged, “Then I guess I did.”

“Korra, you— eep!”

She swiftly lifted her wife up and smoothly laid her back down on the bed, still being mindful of course. She hovered over her body, arms on display for her viewing pleasure, with a smirk that always worked.

“I, what, Asami?”

Asami’s eyes started to fill with a familiar heat. The same amount of heat in them was quickly starting to fill her cheeks, as well. Korra waited for her brilliant brain to catch up to what was happening, a courtesy she was glad to extend. Just meant more time staring into her eyes. Eventually the visibly, and adorably, annoyed CEO found her voice again.

“I had that call—”

“Not anymore.”

“What?”

“I had it moved.”

“You had it– you, what?”

Korra couldn’t stop smiling. “You’re so cute.”

Asami blushed even harder but still managed to act exasperated. “Korra.”

“Okay, okay,” she laughed, “I had Billy Boy move it. It wasn’t that important, you saw the investors last night.”

Asami grimaced. “They may have wanted to review things before tonight, and I told you to stop calling him that.”

A quick shrug, “It’s how I remember his name. Be happy I’m even making the effort, he’ll be replaced by the end of the month– ouch!”

Asami pinched her arm, disrupting her mirth. “Don’t make me regret giving you privileges at my company.”

Her tone wasn’t indignant, but it was serious enough for Korra to dial back the sarcastic playfulness. She sighed and looked down at her with soft and gentle affection. She clearly needed to be reminded how special the day was, how celebratory the night will be.

“Babe,” she said softly, “you know what today is.”

At first Asami narrowed her eyes in confusion. Split seconds passed and she remembered. She sighed and let her forehead relax as a smile slowly split her face. “Right. How could I forget?”

“Easy,” Korra answered, “you’ve been going nonstop for the gala. The numbers are so far ahead of the year-over-year this quarter that you think you need to work double to keep the momentum, and,” she kissed her cheek, “you’ve become pretty forgetful in general.”

She rolled her eyes. “I have not.”

Korra loved the delusion and denial. Now that Asami has caught onto the point of Korra’s actions her previous playfulness returned. She was still on top of her and positioned herself so that her hips fit perfectly between Asami’s legs.

“If you say so,” she said. “Regardless, how about,” she grinded her hips into Asami, chuckling when she moaned, “instead of fussing at me,” teasing kisses are placed on each corner of her mouth, “you say thank you.”

Asami’s back arched slightly when Korra’s hips moved again. “Fuck you,” she laughed.

“Close enough. Good idea, too.”

In an instant they were ravaging each other. Their lips collided hungrily, exciting Korra. To think that she was expecting to get chewed out for rescheduling another monotonous call for another monotonous conversation that Asami could just have Billy Boy take notes on for her. Thank Raava the day’s importance was overriding any trouble she should be in right now. Asami’s sweet whimper confirmed how not in trouble she was.

Korra’s hands found their way back to Asami’s ass, her nails digging in her soft skin. Her wife responded with a sugar sweet moan and a tempting pull of Korra’s bottom lip with her teeth. Ten years later and for fuck’s sake the woman still knew how to rile her up with ease. Korra’s hips moved on their own, grinding harder into the damp spot sitting between the long delicious legs she was settled between. Her mouth latched onto Asami’s neck, ready to leave her mark. Asami wrapped her arms around Korra’s neck, her legs around her waist, and whined to her to keep going.

I’d rather fucking die than stop. Her hips moved a little faster and her lips never left Asami’s neck. She was definitely going to leave a mark that would be hard to cover up for tonight. Oh well.

thump. thump. thump. thump.

Subtle dread began creeping up her spine, so sharp that she could feel it dance on the lines of her tattoo.

The sound happened again. thump. thump. thump. thump.

Korra knew what that meant…

“Uh oh,” Asami whispered, a hint of mockery present. Korra ignored her and kept up her ministrations.

thump.thump.thump.thump.

They were getting faster…

Thump.Thump.Thump.Thump.

And stronger.

“They’re coming,” Asami’s chuckle was breathless.

“Shh, don’t say that,” she groaned, still grinding into her and hungrily gnawing at her neck.

THUMP.THUMP.THUMP.

“Getting closer,” she giggled.

“Asami, shh!”

She reached between Asami’s legs and slipped her fingers inside her underwear. They both moaned, pleased by the touch and how slippery her cunt was. Fuck, Korra did not want to stop. There was no way the universe was going to allow for this to be interrupted, right?

“Mama? Mommy?”

The tiny voice on the other side of the door sucker punched Korra with the answer.

Korra stopped moving and collapsed on top of Asami, hissing, “Fuck.”

Asami released unrestrained laughter while burying her hand in Korra’s hair, pulling her close and kissing her face. She called out, “Is Naga with you, sweetie?”

A loud bark answered Asami and Korra groaned even harder, but the groan morphed into a chuckle. Of course the morning would turn out this way. Maybe it was cosmic payback for turning off Asami’s alarm clock and screwing with her schedule… again.

“Would you like to let them in or should I?”

Korra turned her head to the side so that she could see Asami’s face. Her smug, facetious, drop dead fucking gorgeous face. Korra fixed her with a warning look. “We’re finishing this later.”

“Hmph,” Asami reached between her legs and pulled Korra’s hand out of her underwear. Keeping eye contact, she sucked the wetness right off of them. To top off the moment, she swiped Korra’s lip with the tip of her tongue– always maintaining her status as a teasing seductress. “Didn’t expect anything less, Chief.”

Korra’s cheeks reddened. She was about to say fuck it and bury her head down there, until she heard the doorknob twist.

Fuck why did we have a kid, again??

Before either of them could think, the little one bursted through the door with Naga in tow and jumped in the bed. Her loud joyful squeals and infectious giggles consumed the atmosphere and shifted it in her favor. Both Korra and Asami, supremely grateful they learned the previous lesson that they should definitely stop sleeping naked because of their daughter’s affinity for surprising them in bed, accepted her intrusion with open arms and equally loud laughter.

“Mommy! Mama! Mornins!”

“Good morning, Hira!” Asami wrapped her arms around their four year old and pulled her in, kissing the top of her head and nuzzling into her.

Korra didn’t interrupt. She sat there and watched the exquisite vision of the two most important people in her whole life, snuggling and giggling and smiling, all while the freshly risen sun bathed them both divinely. She watched Asami place both hands on either side of Hira’s little tan face, meeting her blue eyes with her own, and kiss her tiny nose before using her fingers to comb through her brown bedhead curls lovingly.

The longer Korra watched the more she remembered, This is why we had a kid.

“Hira, how about you hug mama, too?”

Hira whipped her head around, eyes bright and vibrating with enthusiasm.

Oh, boy. That little face. Korra was a sucker for their daughter, probably more so than Asami. No sense in denying the fact that the little one coming out looking exactly like her made it way too easy to dote on her.

“Mama!”

“Hey moonbear– oof!” She jumped on Korra like the ruffian she was. Again, more of her own genetics coming into play. Once she found her balance she wrapped her arms around the four year old and pretended to nibble on her, inciting more squeals of delight.

Feeling left out, Naga started hopping around and barking for attention.

“Easy, girl, easy, easy!” Korra laughed. She reached her hand out and ran it through the lovable beast’s fur, smiling at the appreciative thump, thump, thump. response from her tail. “Normally I’d be irritated that you helped her escape from her bed— again.

Naga whined and lowered her head apologetically.

“Lucky for you, it’s a special day. All broken rules can be forgiven today, right dear?” Asami encouraged, a knowing smirk on her face.

Oh, I’ll get you back, Sato.

Hira wrapped her arms around Korra’s neck and placed a kiss on her cheek. “Mornins, Mama.”

Oh your little face! She kissed her forehead. “Good morning, Hirako.”

Hira looked to Asami with wide eyed curiosity. “Baby?”

Asami smiled at her and nodded, “Yes, Hira. You can say good morning to the baby.”

“EEEK!” Hira jumped from Korra’s arms and crawled back to Asami. She dropped her head down and pressed her ear to her stomach, smiling so big that it stretched her face beyond what Korra thought it could go.

It was becoming a routine for Hirako to want to check on her baby sister. Twice a day, once in the morning and right before she was put to bed, the little one would want to hear what was going on inside of Asami’s belly. It was such a relief to the two mothers when they told their only child that she wouldn’t be the only South-Sato heir anymore. The only thing she cared about was having a baby sister to play with, which warmed their hearts.

As always, Asami put her hand on top of Hira’s head as she listened intently to her stomach. Korra could feel the lump of immense gratitude and affection forming in her throat. Again she watched the loves of her life interacting so beautifully in the glow of the morning, both highlighting the incoming edition to their family. Asami’s eyes looking into hers was nearly her undoing.

I love you. I love you. I love you.

Hira popped her head up and frowned. “Baby, sleeping?”

Asami chuckled. “Maybe,” she looked at Korra, “Mama made sure we both stayed asleep this morning so she might not be ready to wake up yet.”

Korra winked.

“Aww,” Hira soured. Feeling her little sister move about the cabin was one of her favorite pastimes, blissfully unaware of how uncomfortable that would make her Mommy sometimes.

Just then, Korra got an idea. A fun, troublemaking idea. She eyed Asami first, hinting that she was up to no good and loving when the message was received.

“Don’t worry, moonbear. Mama is going to make baby Yenna’s favorite food." She gave Asami a mischievous look. “I’ll bet when Mommy eats it, she'll be tap dancing on her bladder before you know it.”

Asami did not like the sound of that. “You wouldn’t…”

Korra’s smile was devious. “I am.

“Korra…”

She slowly started to pull the covers off, still maintaining eye contact. She then looked at Hira, who looked at her as she also started to slowly move. They both grinned dangerously and looked at Asami.

“No, you two. I said no.

“LET’S RUN FOR IT, HIRA!”

In a flash she scooped Hira in her arms and took off. Mama and daughter were out of the bed and out of the room before Asami could stop them. It wasn’t the most fair tactic, considering Asami was six months pregnant and not moving as fast as she normally would. She still needed to be careful.

Korra and Hira laughed in unison when they heard coming from behind them, “I swear when I catch up to you two!”

This was how Korra wanted the day to start. Despite their hot and heavy opening to the morning being disrupted, everything about how things have turned out thus far was more than perfect. There she was, in the gorgeous home she and Asami built from the ground up, running through the halls with her four year old mini-me in her arms. The air being filled with their laughter and Asami’s pleas of “Please don’t make that stuff!” was so excellent, Korra could hardly believe it was how the day was starting.

Then again, why wouldn’t it start off so wonderfully? It was a special day. It was an important day. It was a day that mattered so much to both of them, for a multitude of reasons. And while all the reasons were significant, the main reason was particularly special.

Later that night, the annual United Republic Maker’s Gala would be held. This year, Future Industries— formerly Sato Industries — was the main patron. It was set to be a beautiful evening thanks to all of Asami’s hard work and dedication to showcasing the talent of the world’s greatest minds and producers.

Even more so, this year’s Maker’s Gala was special because of the specific date it fell on this year. The same date as the gala that was held ten years ago. The gala that brought Korra South and Asami Sato together.

Today’s their ten year anniversary and tonight would be a celebration of that. Korra couldn’t contain her glee even if she tried.

With her daughter smiling at her in her arms and Asami walking into the kitchen, arms crossed over her belly and smiling warmly, she smiled openly.

This is going to be a good day.
