Work Text:
Izuku was excited.
It was his boyfriend’s first night in weeks that he had off. So it was hard for him to sit still. It was also Izuku’s birthday and he was excited to celebrate with the man he has loved for as long as he could remember. The man who died for him. Who shared those nights when all he could do was cry and scream. He was always there.
Kacchan told Izuku he had made reservations for a very expensive restaurant. He said it serves the best Katsudon in town. So naturally Izuku is looking forward to the date.
Kacchan had an early patrol today so he told Izuku to head to the restaurant without him, and he’d be there shortly after.
Izuku had all day to answer his friends and family’s calls and respond to their birthday wishes. Overall Izuku’s day has been one of the best birthdays he has ever had, and in only a few hours he would get to see Kacchan! Izuku started to get ready and put on his white button up, black trousers, and his dark green vest. It was the nicest things he had okay? Being teacher at UA was not enough to have a full wardrobe full of nice rich people clothes. Sure he had money, but he needed to pay rent and eat so nice clothing wasn’t on the front of his mind. He hurried to the bathroom and tried to tame his dark green curls but after the hairbrush incident… he decided that he would like to at least look a little presentable.
Izuku gave himself a once over in his stand up mirror and after finding himself looking decent he gave himself a quick nod, grabbed his keys and headed out the door.

Katsuki was having… a rough day. He woke up with a headache and proceeded to drop his coffee all over his damn shirt (HIS FAVORITE). After he made himself another cup of coffee he went to change into his hero suit and dropped one of his gauntlets on his foot. So yeah. Katsuki was having a bad day. To make it worse he has this nagging feeling, telling him he’s forgetting something important but since he’s running late he brushes it off as stress and how everything is pissing him off today.
Once he got to his desk he realized that in his rush to get home last night he forgot to do his paperwork. Now he has a whole stack of papers to do before his patrol in an hour with Kirishima.
“Hey man!” Katsuki just glared at the spiked red haired man. “Woah, what’s wrong man. You look like someone just messed with your sleep schedule again” Not quite but close enough. “Been a rough morning ‘s all” he said with a resigned tone. As if accepting his day was doomed from the start. “Don’t worry about it man! You got the night off yeah? How about after patrol we both go grab some drinks and unwind.” Once again that nagging feeling was back in his entire body, but he couldn’t quite pinpoint the reason.
“Tch, whatever. But if you go all cuddly like you always do I will blast your damn face of shitty hair” he said with no real bite. It must be obvious because it just makes the other man smile more. “Yeah bro!” He said with his fist in the air like he just won a medal. Which he kinda did since Katsuki doesn’t go out often on his days off.

Katsuki’s day has not gotten better. In fact it has gotten worse. In the last hour of his shift a low life villain decided to act like he was fucking the main character and took a hostage. So Katsuki couldn’t just blast the damn idiots face off he had to stay cool and then he got benched because he was about to run in and just take the guy out. So he’s about two seconds away from killing somebody.
“Hey man! Ready for those drinks? It’s been a long day.” Yes. Yes he was ready. Katsuki doesn’t think he has ever been so ready for something in his life. “Let’s go.” he grunted to his friend (not that he would ever admit that).

Izuku was getting nervous. He’s been at the restaurant for about 30 minutes already and Kacchan hasn’t shown up yet. Izuku knows that people can be late. He’s late all the time! But he texted Kacchan 20 minutes ago and he hasn't opened the messages yet. So he’s is a little worried.
”Are you ready to order now, sir?” The waitress asked and brought Izuku out of his thoughts. “O-oh, um yeah I’m still waiting on someone but uh he’s running a little late. I’ll have a glass of white wine please.” Izuku said with an awkward chuckle and his hand raised to his neck. “Of course! Just let me know when you are ready to order your food!” She said with a polite wave of her hand. “Thank you very much!”
When Izuku got his glass he immediately took a long swing of the clear beverage. His mind was a raging storm that wouldn’t calm. Thoughts of doubt and fear plagued his mind. Was it something he did? Was it because Izuku hasn’t seen him enough? Wait. Does Kacchan not… like him anymore? Is it because he’s not a hero anymore? Or because he’s quirkless again because he finally realized that Izuku was just holding him back? The doubts were starting to consume him and soon enough he had finished 4 glasses.
It’s fine Izuku tells himself. Kacchan will be here any minute now! He decided to send a quick text anyways

Izuku: Hey Kacchan! Are you on your way? :)

Izuku: Kacchan??
Izuku was starting to think maybe Kacchan forgot about the reservations. But that was all he would talk about for weeks. About how he was gonna make this the best birthday Izuku has ever had and Kacchan is amazing so of course he would! But Izuku is starting to wonder if maybe Kacchan did it on purpose. The logical part of his brain tells him that Kacchan would never do that to him. But the louder more insecure part tells him that Kacchan doesn’t just forget things and that he always keeps his promises. Maybe Kacchan realized that Izuku was a waste of his time and didn’t want to be around him anymore so he didn’t show up. But still. Izuku will wait until any drop of hope is gone. He’ll wait and hope that Kacchan doesn’t think he’s as worthless as Izuku feels. He’ll wait.
“Sir?” Izuku doesn’t know how long he’s been just sitting in his thoughts while drinking his glasses of wine. “Huh?” He said with a confused tone. “ I’m sorry sir but if you aren’t going to order anything other than wine we will have to ask you to leave.” The waitress said with an apologetic smile. “Oh. Yeah. Yeah, sorry I’ll um. I’ll be going then. Thank you, and sorry for taking up the space.” He said with an apologetic smile that didn’t quite meet his eyes. “It’s alright! Have a good night sir and you can pay at the front.” She said before walking to another table. Izuku sighed as he got up. Swaying a little from the wine. After Izuku paid he stepped out into the cool breeze outside and shuttered as he started walking (a little wobbly) to the subway.
It took a few minutes for Izuku’s sluggish body to get his keys out and unlock his door but when he did he felt quite proud of himself. He then went to his small kitchen and took out his leftover from his last takeout and a candle and brought them to the table. Izuku lit the candle in the middle of his sushi roll and sighed sadly. “Happy birthday Izuku. This year, I promise Kacchan. I’ll make sure to never bother you again. I’m sorry for holding you back” Izuku said as he blew out his candle and a tear rolled down his freckled cheek.

Katsuki didn’t know what time it was, only that it was late and he was a little over his usual drinking limit. He and Kirishima have just been endlessly chatting about random things when the spiky haired man said something that made Katsuki’s heart drop. “So how’s Midoriya doing?” Katsuki nearly stopped breathing. Izuku. The man Katsuki has loved since he got his shit together and realized how he felt. He forgot. It’s Izuku’s birthday. The reservation. Oh no. “Fuck.” Katsuki doesn’t know if he’s ever ran so fast in his life.
He arrived at the restaurant in record time panting and sweating. “Is there a man here , with green hair, green eyes, and freckles?” He asked frantically looking around the restaurant.
“There was a man, about an hour ago that left fitting that description. Is there anything else I can do to help you sir.” The host said. “No. No, uh thanks.” Katsuki said as he rushed out of the restaurant and headed towards Izuku’s apartment.
I can’t believe I forgot. Izuku was so excited all week. And he just…Forgot. He made those plans months ahead. He was gonna ask the nerd to move in with him. But he ruined it. He ruined everything. Katsuki hurt Izuku. Again. He promised he wouldn’t do that ever again, but he did and now he has to fix it.
Katsuki knocked on the door a few times but he couldn’t hear anything on the other side of the door. “Izuku? Are you in there?” He asked with gruff concern and love in his tone. He heard a thud and his brow furrowed in concern. He heard the door click and open and came face to face with a sight that broke his already shaking heart.
Izuku was standing there with disheveled dress clothes and messing tangled green curls. His face has tear stains reaching down his freckles and his face was flushed as if he’d been drinking too much.
“Izuku..” Katsuki felt horrible. He was the reason his love looked like this. “Hi Kacchan. Wha’re you doin’ ‘ere?” Izuku slurred through a tight smile. “Can I come inside?” He got his response when Izuku tugged the door out of the way and flopped onto his couch. “Watcha need Kacchannn.” Izuku’s eyes were glassy and red as he grabbed his blanket and pulled it around his arms. Katsuki sat down and pulled on of his hands over his mouth to try and conceal his inside turmoil.
Izuku’s apartment was a wreck. On the table he had takeout sushi out with a candle in an uneaten sushi roll. Beer bottles were sitting on the coffee table empty and Izuku’s favorite vest was on the floor as if just a worthless piece of garbage.
“wha’s wrong?” Izuku said with a frown. Katsuki looked back to Izuku and sighed. “ Izuku I.. I’m so, so sorry. I stood you up and I hurt you. I didn’t mean to not show up I promise, I just. It’s not an excuse but I had a bad day and Kirishima asked me to go out for drinks and it just slipped my mind, I know that’s not an excuse and I’m a bad boyfriend but please Izuk-“
”Kacchan isn’t a bad boyfriend.” Izuku said with a frown. “Kacchan wasn’t the problem. The problem is me.” And what. How does this sweet, kind, loving soul think this is his fault? “I mean, I’m always wasting your time and it’s not like you’re obligated to be there. I understand. If I were you I wouldn’t wanna waste my time with someone as worthless as me. I know Kacchan. I know that the only reason you ever went out with me was because you felt bad and I don’t blame you. You’re so kind and I don’t.. I never deserved you. You can.. you can leave Kacchan, I understand. I-I know I’m worthless. I know I’m just the same deku I’ve always been. I waited. I waited for you to prove me wrong but I guess it’s the one thing I was ever right about huh. You… you don’t really love me. No one does.” Izuku was full on sobbing now and his breathing fast. Too fast.
“Izuku you are not worthless. Or useless or a deku or anything else that brilliant mind of yours says.” He said while taking a hold of Izuku hands. “I love you Izuku. I think I always have and I know I always will. Today was not your fault. It was mine. Me. Not you. I won’t leave unless you throw me out yourself and in this state I hardly think you can stand.” He said letting out a soft chuckle. “I don’t care if you are a hero or a teacher or quirked or not. I want you. Only you. I would choose you over and over again in every lifetime and I’m sorry I screwed up tonight but I promise I will make it up to you. You’re mine. My Izuku.”
Katsuki barely had time to process what was happening before he has an armful of a crying green bean. “I love you Kacchan. I love you, I love you, I love you, please don’t ever leave me. I need you, I’m sorry. It’s okay Kacchan I forgive you. I’ll always forgive you.”
katsuki held Izuku to his chest and rocked them back and forth.
“Never. I love you, baby. I love you so so much. Happy birthday baby.” He planted a kiss into messy green curls and put his cheek on top of the curls.
Katsuki hooked his finger under Izuku chin and his eyes roamed around constellations of freckles. Izuku’s eyes shined with adoration and love. So much love. It made Katsuki’s breath catch. “What?” Izuku said with a soft smile. “It’s just.. you’re so beautiful. It’s hard to think you’re mine”
Katsuki watched as Izuku’s face turned a bright red and though he tried to shy away from the praise, but Katsuki’s hand was in his way so all he could do was look back into Katsuki’s eyes.
“K-kacchan! S-stop” Izuku giggled. And oh. What a wonderful sound that was. Katsuki moved his gaze down to pouty pink lips. Izuku’s lips then parted and the gap between them closed before either could process what happened.
Their mouths fit together like the last piece of a puzzle fitting perfectly in place. After a minute of enjoying the closeness of eachother Katsuki pulled away. Much to the other’s disappointment. “I uh, wanted to ask you something at dinner but well now seems like a good enough time but if you want me to wait I-“
“Kacchan just say it.” Izuku said with one on the warmest smiles Katsuki has ever seen.
“I want you to move in with me”
Katsiki watched as several emotions crossed Izuku’s face and he rushed to correct himself. “If-if you want! If not we can just stay like this you know that’s fine too and al-“
Katsuki was cut off by Izuku’s plush lips meeting his.
“Yes Kacchan. Of course.”
Yeah. Katsuki thought. They were gonna be alright. They were gonna be forever.
