Chapter Text
When Felix left the small town of Charming at the age of eighteen to pursue his dream career, he knew he was leaving behind more than his parents and little sister, Ryujin. He was leaving behind the group who he’d grown up with. Whilst not many knew about his relationship with childhood best friend, those that did always teased that he’d be a heartbreaker whilst Felix was away, learning law. Those that said such things never really understood the gang, never understood the ties of loyalty that were so tight it ran through their families.
Growing up, the Hwang’s had been something of a blessing for Felix. The Lee’s took it as a sign that it was because nobody in Charming messed with the Hwang’s. Although his own father, Taemin, never joined SAMCRO—the known biker gang who ran many things off the books as well as their mechanics business—he fully supported them, helping out with transport when they needed it, no questions asked.
His friendship with Hyunjin—the only son of the Hwang’s—only formed because Felix had been cornered by the playground bullies. He was small and understandably easier to push around at the age of five, but his vicious kicks to their shins as well as Hyunjin pulling the bullies off of him had them both as thick as thieves since.
Their childhood had been a mixture of Hyunjin’s possessiveness as they grew older, that possessiveness mixing in with feelings and when Hyunjin’s mum, Hyorin, caught them kissing when they were thirteen, she simply told them to keep warm and no funny business before moving on with her evening. Felix had been mortified and Hyunjin had been pleased, deciding to plead to his mum for help to tell his best friend's parents.
None of them had even blinked at the news, Felix trying not to shy away from Hyunjin’s dad, Taeyang, but the man had ruffled his head and told him that as long as they’d adopt more than one kid, he was happy that Hyunjin would be loved by someone with such a good heart.
With their parents' blessings and the gangs understanding that their relationship was off limits to their jokes, they both blossomed. With SAMCRO being such a strong influence in Felix’s life, especially with Hyunjin being groomed to take over one day when Taeyang would decide to retire from the title instead of having it taken from him, his own dad knew that Felix was going to be involved somehow, even if he decided against initiation since he had every right to do so.
His mum, Taeyeon had joked about Felix being Hyunjin’s “Old Lady” when they were sixteen—celebrating his sixteenth birthday no less—causing both teenagers to blush furiously at her words and Felix to protest at the words.
“Don’t like the idea of that lil’ man?” Taeyang teased him, the nickname filled with nothing but fond affection they had for Felix.
“Someone is gonna have to pull your sorry asses out of the fire when your plans go to shit, appa. That’s gonna be me. I’m gonna study and get into those big shot firms that look down on us and I’m gonna come back to Charming and keep the lotta you out of trouble.” He missed Hyunjin’s look of awe, but the other club members hadn’t.
His words had hit home for all of them, so they toasted the birthday boy luck on his sixteenth and that was that.
That night, when the two were hidden away in their den—despite what their parents assumed when Hyunjin pulled him away—they lay on the various throws and pillows that lived on the floor, cuddled up as Hyunjin played with Felix’s fingers, gently bringing his knuckles to his lips, brushing a soft kiss to the skin and making the smaller blush a brilliant shade of red, much to the amusement of the other.
“Did you really mean that Lix-ah? You really gonna go away for however long it takes to be a big shot lawyer?” When it was the two of them, Hyunjin never hid himself from Felix. It was always going to be them against the world. But Felix could see the fear as clear as daylight in his boyfriend's eyes.
“Hyung, it’s gonna be seven years of school at least. Maybe a couple more to work with the big firms and get cases under my belt so people can see that I’m good at what I do.” He admitted softly. The silence that followed was pensive but not uncomfortable.
Silence for them never had been uncomfortable since Hyunjin had confessed his love when they were thirteen and realising that maybe love wasn’t a bad thing, especially if it worked out for their parents, whispering that he’d likely loved Felix since they first met when they were kids.
“Ten years is a long time, jagiya.” Felix shifted in his arms to face him, eyes searching and finding the fears and doubts, the insecurities of the words from certain people.
“It is,” his voice was soft and soothing as his hand traced Hyunjin’s face, “but I’m not letting you go, Hwang. We’ve got at least a decade of friendship on our side, love that we knew was blossoming into what we are now. We’ve got at least another two before I have to go to university. Surely we can make it through another decade? Your appa won’t put you on any of the runs, not till you turn twenty one. So that means we’ve got four years of unfiltered time for you coming to visit me in the dorms and helping me get noise complaints, right?”
Hyunjin laughed, caught off guard by his brazen attitude, leaning to brush his lips against Felix’s once he’d stopped laughing.
“Of course. Reckon you’ll let me into your pants before you leave?” He let his eyebrows lift up twice and Felix laughed, pushing his chest before they traded kisses, only for Felix to pull back after a few moments with a smirk on his lips.
“Reckon you can wait till I’ve gotta leave. I know you’re not gonna complain when my lips can be put to better use for the next two years.” Hyunjin rolled them over so he was pinning him, a growl on his lips as Felix laughed breathlessly.
“I reckon I can do that. But tonight, I’m treating my birthday boy.” Their lips met and the night disappeared between them.
When Felix got accepted into university, the club had celebrated with him, watching in anticipation for his acceptance. He’d studied so hard for his entrance exams and had already imparted knowledge to help keep the gang out of trouble.
His first year had been daunting. Hyunjin visited once a month at most thanks to the cost of gas, but it was enough for them.
They managed to keep it under wraps that they were together. Whilst they were lucky with their parents and the club, they knew that Felix’s career was truly on the line now if it got out that he was in a relationship with Hyunjin, best case scenario being that he gets expelled, the worst one ending up with him dead and no chance of retribution.
So they kissed behind locked doors and when they went out drinking, no one batted an eyelid as they got girls' numbers but never went home with them.
Other men in Felix’s class mocked him constantly. Calling him too feminine, too weak. Made fun of his soft spoken attitude in class and told him that he’d never go far, especially when he took the only female classmate under his wing, the onslaught neverending for both of them. They got vicious in the mock trials they held, the debates they thought they’d overpower the two of them in, make them break. But he had a secret weapon.
He’d grown up with SAMCRO, and in the words of the club vice president, Jimin, “he’s got balls of diamond that one.” Hyunjin had laughed at his words and Felix had thrown the drinks mat at the VP’s face, making the other members laugh. But he knew how to work the courtroom, to keep his voice delicate, convincing. He taught Jen, the only female in his class, his tricks and before long both of them were dominating in the mock trials, much to the chagrin of their classmates.
When he’d come home for the holidays, Taeyang had heard enough from Hyunjin to track Felix down and ask if he wanted a second layer of protection.
“I can’t give you Hyunjin, as much as you’d both love that, I need him here unfortunately. Him and Jeongin-ah get into enough trouble as it is.” He could only grin.
“Throw in the rest of them and that’s going to be a disaster when they start doing the runs for you old man.” Taeyang had snorted at his words but didn’t disagree with the assessment of their friends.
“Either it’ll be crazy enough that it’ll work or it’ll be a whole disaster and you’re hauling their asses from the coals of the law.” He muttered before pulling their conversation back on track. “Instead of Hyunjin, I figured it was about time that Jimin and I taught you how to shoot a gun, don’t you think?”
“I know how to shoot a gun, appa.” Came the petulant retort and Taeyang smiled.
“Ah, but from a moving vehicle? And what about the awareness of your surroundings?” Felix scowled but conceded that he didn’t know how to do those things.
“I guess not.” Came the admittance and Taeyang gave him a pointed look, making him sigh.
“Jimin-ah and I will start you tomorrow. Hyunjin can come as well. Maybe get him to rope in the rest of the miscreants. All eight of you are going to be a true force to be reckoned with when he eventually takes over.”
“Oh, no bet on that one. Channie-hyung will be his VP since I have to keep my ties off the books with you. You need to make sure that Bobby-hyung doesn't murder them when Changbin-hyung decides to start a prank war to pass the time between runs because you know he’ll be their easy target.” Taeyang laughed loudly at that.
The two of them returned to the Hwang household. Taeyeon laughed as Ryujin rushed to greet her brother. It certainly had been strange being away from her for so long.
“You’re not wrong about them, Felix-ah. C’mon, you’ve been missed by a lot of people.” Taeyang herded them inside to find nearly everyone from the club as well as the younger generation around, eating and drinking.
Felix was happy enough to stay sober since he knew that the following day was going to be nerve wracking as it was. He was happy enough to be settled on Hyunjin’s lap, talking with his parents whilst Ryujin asked him every question about university, talking about her classes and telling him of her friends that she made in school.
The following morning felt like it was straight out of the movies. But he knew that this was the reality for the club members who did various runs that weren’t so legal.
Unsurprisingly, Hyunjin helped his dad and Jimin. Felix hadn’t expected anything less from his boyfriend, but even then, it still stunned him the trust that he had in him to not hit him with a stray bullet when it came to being aware of club members versus rivals.
“Am I gonna really need to know this kinda stuff?” The complaint had been good-natured, but the elder Hwang understood his hesitation. He hadn’t risen to the complaint, making Felix go through the course again. It was late afternoon before Jimin finally called to a halt and they began to pack down, making sure nothing was left behind.
Once they were ready to go, Taeyang motioned for the other two to head off. Hyunjin scowled for a moment before his dad sighed.
“I need to talk with your boy. I’ve got intel on his uni and you need to meet with Bobby-ah. The Harris’ have payments due.” With a quick kiss to his boyfriend, Hyunjin handed Felix his helmet and then he was gone with Jimin.
“C’mon.” He didn’t hesitate to climb on the back of Taeyang’s bike. It was a level of freedom that he understood and part of him wanted his own to travel back to university with, to show the assholes in his class who thought he was weak and too fucking prissy that no one messed him.
The drive wasn’t too far out of Charming. It was mostly desert but there was a little spot that gave a nice view of the town.
When the bike was parked up, Felix was off first, heading to the small bench that had been left there by a previous resident of the town.
“Hyunjin is going to be club president one day. You and I both know this.” Felix did know this. Both he and Hyunjin had known about it since they were kids. Hyunjin had always so desperately wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
“What’s the time frame?” He finally asked, turning his head to the man who treated him like a son.
“Maybe by the time he’s twenty five. I’ve been CP for nearly forty years, and I think it’s time to retire.” This stunned Felix, his eyes going wide.
“But, Jinnie-hyung thought he wouldn’t be prez til he was in his late thirties at least?” The surprise that coloured Felix’s tone made Taeyang laugh as he threw his arm around his shoulders, squeezing him gently as he kissed his temple in a rare moment of affection from the older man.
“I’m glad that you both have faith in this old man. But unlike the others, I wanna be able to spoil my sonju when they come. I look forward to the day that my boy can make an honest man out of you, Felix-ah.”
Felix blushed, making him laugh.
“Shove off, old man.” He groaned, pushing away from him, making him laugh even more.
“I’m just saying. We want to plan accordingly with you two.” He raised his hands in surrender and Felix sighed.
“We talked about it before I left in September. We know that things won't change until the laws change and it’s dangerous, for me especially. He knows I’m already planning to spend a couple of years in one of the big city firms to try and get some cases under my belt and prove myself. Hyung also knows that I want him. I’ve never really wanted anyone else.” The admittance made Taeyang smile fondly.
“And I know that. That’s why I want to help you protect yourself. When Hyunjin becomes club president, you know we’ve got problems that he’s going to inherit. The second they find out that you’re a lawyer? That’s a pretty lookin’ red target painted on your forehead, Felix.”
Felix nodded. “That’s why you had me take out the opposition versus our own.”
Taeyang nodded. “I don’t anticipate you being part of the club like that, especially since you need to keep it all off the books when it concerns the club. But if you get into a situation, I’ll be relieved to know that both of my boys can get away safely. You know we’d be devastated if we lost you.” Felix felt his heart swell for his boyfriend's parents.
His own parents were good to him and he knew that. And so were the Hwang’s. But knowing they valued him like a son already made him appreciate just what he had in his life, the support they had from both sets of parents.
“At least by the time I’m finished with school, I’ll be there to haul his ass out of the firecoals.” His murmured words made Taeyang laugh before he patted his shoulder.
“And he’d be lucky to have you hauling his ass from the fires. C’mon, let’s get back before he goes off on me. I know you’re only here for a few more weeks and he wants to spend as much time as possible with you.”
When the two of them returned, Hyunjin didn’t hesitate to almost drag Felix out to the den that they’d built as teenagers, making his dad laugh at the exasperated eye roll. But once the two of them were secluded away from the world, he happily nestled against him, their clothes long gone as he traced Hyunjin’s tattoos.
“What was my appa after, jagi?” Hyunjin’s fingers ran down Felix’s spine in return and his body melted against him, fighting to keep his eyes open.
“Told me why he was doing that today, why he wanted me to know how to at least fight back.” He murmured, and he felt a soft kiss on his forehead, earning a soft sigh from his lips.
“And why would that be, sweetheart?” Felix groaned, tilting his head so that he could catch Hyunjin’s eyes.
“You’re gonna be club president eventually, Jinnie. Everyone and their mothers know how close we are. He’s worried that when you take over, you’ll be inheriting problems he’s been dealing with for years. Just being associated with you guys puts a target on my back, but when they find out I’m a lawyer to boot, let alone if it gets out that we’re together? You won’t have a body left to bury.” Felix knew his words were a bit too blunt for what they were, but he needed Hyunjin to understand that this could be an issue.
“Hopefully being in the big city takes it away, since you’re out of the town for so long.” He smiled sadly at his boyfriend, but let the matter drop.
“He also mentioned about being excited for the day you make an honest man out of me. I think he forgets that we’re both eighteen and have to change a whole fucking law just so that I can marry you.” Hyunjin laughed and the mood changed drastically as Felix shifted, straddling his boyfriend's hips.
“Trust me jagiya, when I’ve saved up and you get that law changed, I’ll be making an honest man out of you. Those big shots will be stunned to find that the top of their class is getting fucked good by his boyfriend whilst thrashing them in the trials.” Felix blushed but he laughed.
Time passed by for them. Whilst Hyunjin was saving up the money he earned from helping the club and working with Bobby in the garage, Felix worked his ass off.
Despite repeatedly proving his point in the mock trials, his classmates were unimpressed and kept dropping hints, getting dangerously close to accusations, so Felix solved his problem with his fists and they backed down.
When Hyunjin had found out, he’d taken a month off despite Taeyang and Taemin half-heartedly arguing, they both realised that if anything, it would keep Felix safer if they saw someone show up to make sure to keep things in line.
Felix was stunned when Hyunjin had turned up after his lecture to pick him up. The roar of the bike engine was so familiar that it sounded almost out of place in the big city.
Felix had been chatting with Jen as they’d left, ignoring the few guys that were determined to try and humiliate Felix.
He flung himself at Hyunjin and took the time to introduce the other two, earning a soft apologetic look from his friends.
“Took you fucking long enough, asshole.” He muttered much to his laughter and the confused remarks from the other guys.
“Sorry Lix-ah, but Ryujinnie was the one who wanted to make sure that you got it.” Hyunjin teased and so Felix punched his arm and turned to Jen with a big grin.
“Jen, meet my asshole best friend Hyunjin. Hyung, this is Jen who I’ve been telling you about.”
Hyunjin kissed the back of her hand and Felix nearly lost his composure at the bright red cheeks on her face.
“Really Atkins? Some lowlife biker kissing your hand is what gets you off but you won’t give us the time of day?” Felix knew that Jacobs had no filter to his mouth but this was the first time he felt the protective streak for his best friend and his boyfriend, the urge to hit the man strong as he sneered at the rich prat who thought he was better than everyone in the class.
“If I wasn’t so determined to beat you in court, Jacobs, I’d have shown you what I do in my spare time when you aren’t all having pissing contests. You know nothing about my best friend and what he does so instead of trying to act like a tough boy, go ask daddy for a personality transplant.” He snapped, ignoring how Hyunjin’s eyes darkened for a brief second.
“What, you gonna show us what a little prissy-”
“Finish that sentence and see exactly how much Taekwondo I do to kick your ass, Jacobs.” Felix cut him off, the other snapping his mouth shut upon seeing the dark look on Felix’s face.
“You wouldn’t risk your position.” Jacobs sneered and Felix widened his eyes, a look of innocence on his face and he heard Jen giggle.
“But I protect the people I care about from creepy assholes, and I can’t help that you kept up your unwanted advances on my best friend who doesn’t know self-defence. I just needed to make sure that she wasn’t attacked by a classmate who thinks too much of himself.” His voice was pitched softer, a little higher and the bait was set.
They all knew what Felix was doing and Jacobs finally hesitated, knowing that he would be outnumbered by the witnesses and he couldn’t guarantee their classmates backing him up because whilst they all made fun of Felix, he was too good at what he did.
“She’s an ugly bitch anyway.” He turned on his heel and Felix waited before his gaze returned to Jen and the pair started laughing. They hugged goodbye and Jen promised to text him that she got home safely before he greeted Hyunjin casually, aware of eyes that could be watching them.
The helmet felt heavy in his hands as Hyunjin tilted his head and Felix climbed on the back, hands wrapping around his waist carefully and they were off, the feeling of the bike reminding him of home.
He’d missed the feeling of the bike underneath him. The way the engine rumbled was a reassurance, something that had come with years of riding around with Hyunjin and being taught to ride by his own dad, much to his boyfriend’s dismay. It was a level of freedom that he never felt in the city, so enclosed and overrun with either pedestrians or cars. Bikes were around, but not ones like these, they were more what Bobby would call flashy toys, built for speed but would never survive one of the runs they did.
When they got to his place, Hyunjin dismounted smoothly before holding a hand up to stop him, tucking his hand in his jacket pocket and pulling out a disposable camera with a small smirk on my face.
“Slide forward and let me get a photo of you, Lix-ah.” His voice was soft, and Felix felt a heat pool in his belly as he turned, letting Hyunjin take the first photo before taking off the helmet and leaning back, watching his boyfriend's throat bob as he swallowed and took another two photos before he climbed off.
“Your eomma is gonna love the photo of you dressed like this on the bike. It looks-” Felix grinned.
“C’mon, I’ve got food for us and a spare bed for you.” He teased as he let him in.
He was lucky that because he’d gotten a full scholarship ride, his college savings went on his rent instead, able to rent out an actual house instead of a shitty apartment or being forced to stay in the university dorms.
He was also lucky that in the city, no one really cared about each other. There was no sense of community that Felix had grown up with, which suited him just fine as Hyunjin followed him into the house, dropping the bag once the door was closed.
Felix turned and launched at Hyunjin, lips finding each other as the taller pulled him up, hands under his thighs as he wrapped his legs around the clothed waist.
Their lips parted but Felix wasn’t done, dragging his lips down Hyunjin’s neck and he moaned, breathless under his boyfriends ministrations.
“You don’t know how hot you looked defending your friend, jagiya.” He murmured, grip almost bruising as Felix worked his way back up his neck and along his jaw. “Not to mention how hot you looked dressed like that on my bike. Fuck. When you come home, I’m going to fuck you on my bike and have you beg for me.” Another moan was ripped from his lungs before Felix pulled back, eyes lidded and lips puffy.
“Shut up.” Hyunjin laughed as he kissed him, heading up to the bedroom and reconnecting with him.
When they were nestled in bed, having gotten their welcome out of their systems, Felix was dozing against Hyunjin’s chest when he leaned over to the floor, rummaging through his jacket pockets.
“What are you doing? I had a comfy pillow.” He complained indignantly. Hyunjin laughed.
“So impatient Felixie.” He breathed as he finally found what he wanted, returning to his previous position.
“I had a whole thing planned for the day that we’re allowed to get married. But being like this, with you? I can’t think of a better moment.”
His words had Felix confused as he pulled back to stare at his boyfriend.
“And what moment would that be, jagiya?” Hyunjin gave him the softest smile, one that he loved so much that he knew was just for him.
“The moment to tell you that I’ve loved you for almost my entire life, and I don’t want a life without you in it. Lee Felix, will you marry me when the world can see that our love is just as beautiful?” The ring in his hands was beautiful. One that he recognised to be Hyunjin’s halmeoni’s.
He knew he was in shock, his brain processing the words as he stared at the ring before his eyes went to Hyunjin’s face, hope so very clear in his features
“Hyunjin this better not be a fucking joke.” He breathed and there was the soft smile as he leaned forward to kiss him.
“I would never joke about this. You’re too important to me Lixie.”
Felix offered his left hand, trembling and Hyunjin slid the ring on and once the ring was settled, tears began to fall.
“Yes. Yes, I will marry you.” He whispered and the joy on Hyunjin’s face in that moment left him breathless. Carefully he kissed the ring before his lips found Felix’s once more.
“My sun, my moon, my stars.” Felix would’ve sobbed had his lips not been busy immediately, previous tiredness forgotten.
When he returned to class on Monday, there was nothing noticeable about Felix that had changed, but Jen could see the bounce in his step, like something had been taken from his shoulders and it showed in how he greeted her.
“Did you both get laid over the weekend?” Her tease made him laugh.
“Nah, Hyunjin-hyung isn't really interested in that, he has someone back home waiting for him. But it’s been nice to see him. We grew up together and me coming away to university is the first time we really separated and it's like you’re missing a limb or something.” He explained quietly and she nodded, eyes understanding.
“My best friend is the same. We were friends from the day we were born and it’s just strange.” Something in her tone made Felix see her in a new light and he gave her a softer smile which she matched.
There were a few mutters from their classmates but no one really said anything until Jacobs dropped his bag on Felix’s things, the blonde leaning back to stare at the man who had made it his mission to be a problem.
“So you don’t get laid, unless you’re fucking Jennie here-”
“Jennifer.” She snapped back at him, but he ignored her.
“-and not to mention that you don’t fit in. Why are you even here, Lee?”
He knew it was a test. And as much as he wanted to punch the asshole, he’d spotted the professor walking in and so he leaned back, staring him down.
He wasn’t going to rise to the bait.
“Next time you disparage Jennifer like that, I hope you have proof to back up the accusations. All of you have been begging the poor woman for a quick shag but considering none of you seem to be able to take no for an answer, you’re very quick to assume it’s me she’s sleeping with when I’ve been a decent friend. Deliberately trying to ruin her reputation doesn’t look good for you Jacobs.”
“The only way she’d even get into a firm is by-”
“Finish that sentence and find out exactly how much I know that you’ve been sleeping with various secretaries to try and get into firms because daddy’s money isn’t enough to get them to want to take you on as an intern.” Felix warned him and Jacobs' mouth snapped shut. “You’ve been on us from day one, telling me I’m not good enough or the fact that Jen is a woman but we’ve outstripped you in both the debates and mock trials. Both of our scores have been higher than yours consistently and we sit in the top three of the class when you can’t even manage the top ten. If you manage to get into Law School after the undergrad program and you face either of us in the courts, I hope you’re ready to accept losses because the way you seem to be practicing law is with a prayer instead of looking at the facts.”
The room was silent before there was a slow clap and he watched as Jacobs’ eyes widened in shock.
“Mr Lee is in fact correct with his facts. And as it happens I’ve already had some concerning calls regarding your behaviour Mr Jacobs. I want to see you in my office after class.”
He nodded to the professor before he slunk to his seat, clearly wanting the eyes to stop following him but Felix couldn’t help but let out a breath of air, his hands shaking a little.
Jen grasped his hand under the desk, squeezing his fingers gently.
“Thank you.” She whispered and he smiled at her.
“It’s the least I could do. Hey, when your friend next visits and Hyunjin’s in town, do you want to grab dinner?” He was taking a risk, but it seemed to be a calculated pay off as she nodded.
“She won’t be back before the end of the school year, but when we come back in the fall?” He nodded in agreement just as the professor began his lecture and they began to take notes.
Unsurprisingly Jacobs was removed from the program. Felix had provided the evidence he’d uncovered at the request of the Dean and it was the final nail in the coffin that had him pulled from the class.
Both Felix and Jen had breathed a sigh of relief when that news was broken to them several weeks after the argument.
Before he knew it, the end of the year had arrived and with it came the stress of moving back for a few months. Felix had spoken with his landlord and had come to the agreement for it to remain under Felix’s tenancy, since he’d received no noise complaints and had kept the house in good condition.
He’d decided to surprise his family, since he’d not said anything about coming home for the summer, forcing his friends to keep their mouths shut when Chan, Changbin and Jeongin helped him pack up a few things and bring him back to Charming.
When they pulled up, it had been timed with a club evening where they’d met at the Hwang’s, and Felix knew his parents would be there too.
Chan timed it so that they were the last to arrive, and the others knew that it was inevitable with how late the three of them could be, so when Felix stepped in, Changbin had the biggest grin as he said “surprise.”
It was his mum who shouted in delight first, pulling him into the tightest hug, almost breaking his ribs as she pulled back, her hands cradling his face as she peppered him with kisses, making everyone laugh as he accepted his fate.
His dad pulled him in for another bone breaking hug and he sank into the affection, breathing out the relief of finally being home again. He’d missed this.
Everyone laughed when he peppered Ryujin’s face in kisses and she protested loudly before hugging him and returning to Seungmin’s lap where she’d previously been, he was met with the shock on Hyunjin’s face.
“You little sneak!” He accused and everyone laughed as he reached out and Hyunjin came willingly, wrapping him up and pressing a softer kiss to his lips, both fully aware they were in front of their parents and friends.
Felix carefully brushed the hair from Hyunjin’s eyes and his eyes refocused to the ring that sat on his finger, his breath catching.
“Really?” He breathed and Felix grinned.
“We’re safer here, for them to know your intentions I think. I’ve looked into it and we could get a civil union and I know there have been movements in getting same sex marriages recognised. It’s looking more likely but-”
“We can have our union and then get married and have the wedding of our dreams.” Hyunjin breathed, excitement clear, forgetting about their audience for a moment.
That was all it took for someone to actually notice the ring on Felix’s left finger.
“So when’s the wedding?” Chan teased, pulling them from their bubble and there was a brief moment of silence as Felix beamed, turning to their parents and holding his left hand out towards them.
Both their mum’s screamed and pulled them both into a crushing hug that made their dad’s laugh loudly as others began to congratulate them.
Hyunjin had been adamant that whilst it wasn’t an actual wedding, their ceremony would be nothing like what the boys had seen previously when other club members had gotten married.
Both had made the decision to keep the prospects out of it, knowing that it would keep both of them safer for the time being.
Taeyang had unsurprisingly backed him up on that and they made provisions so that the prospects were left working the garage and protecting the club HQ.
Whilst both received ribbing from their friends, Felix was adamant to have Hyunjin’s input on the actual ceremony itself with ideas he wanted to include. Whilst it was only a civil union, that wouldn’t stop them from having a party that they wanted with the people they wanted to include in the celebrations.
Felix had quietly confessed what he suspected about Jen and Hyunjin had readily agreed to invite her and her friend if his fiance's suspicions were correct.
The plan was that the following summer would be their union, to give Felix time to complete his second year of university without worrying about the logistics of their union, especially with him researching those who would perform the union safely.
“I’m going to defer a year after we get married.” Hyunjin stared at Felix in shock. It had been one thing they’d both been so certain on and that was his career was important to him, so he couldn’t quite understand the decision as to why.
Hyunjin had pulled Felix onto his lap, hands disappearing under his shirt and resting on the small of his back. They were at his parents, since both sets had gone away for the weekend. With a patchover coming up, they’d taken the opportunity to spend some time away together and had invited Felix’s parents to their little getaway and left his little sister in the care of Seungmin’s parents.
“And why are you deferring a year? I thought your career was the top priority?” Hyunjin’s voice was soft, almost deceptive. Felix snorted.
“Technically my husband will become my top priority when we have our union and I want to steal you away for a year. Our honeymoon is going to be longer than two weeks of shagging in a different state.” He breathed, rolling his hips and there was a soft catch of breaths.
“Oh is it now?”
Hyunjin moved his lips to nibble on Felix’s earlobe, the sensation sending a shiver down his spine as he bit back a whimper, trying to focus on the words.
“A year of travelling. Motels, hostels, hotels. Travel across America, shag in every state and break the law as we do. Then travel to Europe, I’m sure we can join the mile high club when we fly.”
Hyunjin had him pinned to the couch, eyes dark and wanting, the desire clear as daylight as Felix moaned.
“What my husband wants, my husband will get.”
Later in the evening, they were looking at the various brochures that their parents had gotten for them, a map of America spread out on the kitchen table as they began to plan the routes they wanted to take, the sights they wanted to see.
“You realise that this means I’ll have to join my appa on runs now?” Felix squeezed his hand.
“It’s why my appa is planning on offering to pay for half of the trip. He’s been part of the club unofficially since before I was born, they’re best friends. He knows what you do and he knows that you’d protect me, move heaven and earth if you could. I wasn’t supposed to tell you, so please act surprised when he offers.” Hyunjin laughed as he kissed his temple.
“Secret is safe with me, jagiya. So July or August for the union date?”
True to his word, Hyunjin did act surprised when Taemin made the offer, but he didn’t have to fake the shock at the amount he was actually offering.
“That’s-surely that would cover the entire trip?” Hyunjin breathed. Taemin laughed as he slapped his soon to be son-in-law’s back.
“Son, I’ve been saving for this ever since he brought you home and had this look of adoration every time he looked at you. At first it was small amounts which I was prepared to make for his college fund and then you two got together and his eomma told me to start saving properly.” Hyunjin stared, feeling utterly stunned at the generosity.
He could do nothing but hug the man tightly in gratitude, in amazement, in awe. He wasn’t entirely sure, but he knew that he loved this man just as much as he loved his own dad.
Taemin understood the unspoken words and held onto Hyunjin just as tightly, giving him a moment to take in the significance of the offer.
“You realise the second Felix finds out, he’s going to flip?” He finally asked and as they pulled away, he laughed loudly.
“Like I’d expect anything else from that boy of mine. He’s his eomma through and through. I can only count my blessings that he found you early on to temper his impulses.” Hyunjin tried and failed to hide his smirk and Taemin rolled his eyes before they were drawn into a discussion about the newest modifications he’d made to his bike.
They continued to plan the union, even when Felix went back to university back in the fall. It seemed that with the verbal smackdown resulting in Jacobs’ resignation from the course meant that both he and Jen had earned grudging respect from their peers and it offered a reprieve.
Hyunjin travelled down in October when Jen’s best friend Michelle had arrived for a week and Felix found himself more and more certain of his suspicions.
So he pulled Jen to the side one evening, before they were meeting the other two, tucking her arm into his as they walked to the restaurant.
“So when are you going to tell me you two are together?” Her grip tightened against his arm and he heard a sharp intake of breath.
“Don’t say shit like that Felix.” Her voice was hard and he snorted.
“Don’t be so obvious about it. Even Jinnie knows when to keep the moon eyes to our closest.” Her head snapped to look at him as he navigated the busy sidewalk, making sure that he didn’t lead her into a post.
“Felix.”
“Not here. Come back to mine after dinner and we can talk about it.”
Dinner was still fun, even if Jen kept stumbling over her words and shooting furtive glances to Felix, who ignored her much to Michelle’s amusement and Hyunjin’s confusion.
Once they got their dessert to go, it was a short walk back to Felix’s, where Michelle tucked her arm in Felix’s and Jen allowed Hyunjin to copy his actions. By the way Michelle was smirking as they talked, Felix knew she’d added two and two together.
It was only when the door was closed and they were settled on the couches, Michelle and Jen on one whilst Felix settled into Hyunjin’s side.
“So not just a best friend, huh?” Michelle asked and Jen stared for a few moments before relief flooded her face.
“I didn’t mean to sound so cryptic, but I couldn’t risk anyone understanding our conversation as we were walking Jen. However, you keep looking at Michelle like she hung the moon and both of us caught on.” Felix explained and she sighed.
“I’m terrible at keeping it a secret when she’s here. But yeah, Felix, Hyunjin, this is my girlfriend Michelle Morgan.” She introduced her properly and both bowed their heads before sharing a look and Felix pulled out the chain he wore under his shirt, the ring settled on it.
“Jen, Michelle, let me introduce you to my fiance Hwang Hyunjin.”
That made both of them stop, wide eyes before breaking out into wide smiles.
“When did that happen?” Jen asked, delight in her face.
“It happened the weekend before we got Jacobs kicked out of the school.” Felix grinned and she laughed, delighted.
“Oh if only they knew what we actually were.”
The night passed by easily, Felix immediately extended the invite to their civil union and both accepted, delighted by the trust.
Having Jen know that he was in fact going to have a union, it made it easier as the year went on and he needed to attend appointments for fittings and meetings with various vendors.
They made it work, Jen covering for him when he had no way to get out of the appointments and made sure he had notes for the classes.
It was a quieter year for both him and Hyunjin, despite all the appointments and meetings with the venues and vendors. It dawned then how much work they were putting in to pull off a union and Hyunjin had quietly remarked a wedding would be much more, especially on top of their respective school work and jobs.
But Felix just whispered worth it every time, making Hyunjin smile and kiss him.
It was exhausting, but Felix pulled it off, finished top of the class with Jen second behind him and the business with the Hwang’s was thriving, both the garage and the illegal side of it.
Before he knew it, he was standing in the foyer of the venue they’d selected, overlooking a lake, both his parents beside him.
It was one thing they wanted to change, they weren’t a traditional couple and never would be, but there was something comforting having his parents by his side.
“How are you feeling aegiya?” Taeyeon was soft in her words, hands carefully brushing the back of his cheek.
“Excited. Nervous. He’s everything, eomma.” He murmured and she laughed, kissing his cheek, making sure no lipstick residue was left on his cheek.
“I know. You two were tied at the hip as children and now we know why.” Felix laughed.
“I’m more excited for the future, even if it’s scary.” He turned to Taemin who wore a look of pride, “I still can’t believe he agreed to let you practically pay for our entire honeymoon. Appa that’s so much.” It had been a regular argument in the Lee household until Taeyeon had sat him down and explained why he’d had done this.
Even now, it still rankled a little, because they’d saved up so much.
“Then we’ll call it payback for you telling him before I could.” His jaw dropped at that. He knew Hyunjin hadn’t told him, or at least Felix thought he had gotten away with his slip up to his fiancee.
Apparently not.
Taemin chuckled as he tapped under Felix’s chin, his jaw snapping shut with an audible click of his teeth and the man grinned.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Even he knew he sounded scandalised, annoyed that his deception had been for nothing. Both his parents laughed as Taemin rested a hand on his shoulder.
“You’re my son. I’ve raised you and know you, Felix. Hyunjin is also mine, even if your eomma never gave birth to him. The two of you grew up with us as well as his parents. You may be able to fool the world my son, but you can never fool your parents.” There was a kindness in his voice, a lesson to be taught and Felix could only pout in return, making them laugh once more.
“Figures.” He finally muttered before the music switched and he felt butterflies in his chest, his heart speeding up a little as he realised it was really happening.
“Time to begin your future, sweet boy.” Taeyeon’s voice was gentle and she kissed his cheek once more.
Carefully he tucked both arms in his parents and they guided him down to where Hyunjin stood, their closest friends and family around him, his suit leaving Felix breathless.
As he took his soon to be husband's hands, something in him relaxed, settling in his chest and there was something that whispered this was home, this was forever.
Forever never looked so good to him.
