Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

───── ⋆⋅✶⋅⋆ ─────

Time passes by quickly when you sleep. Maybe too quickly, for I don't remember how long I've been here anymore. When I wake I hope for warmth. For him to be by my side again. Nestled close to his heart I would be. His voice would be gentle, as I've always known him to be, rumbling across his ribcage in a hum.

Every time I do I still wake up in the dark and the cold. Memories not of my own would come and go. Some days I forget why I was here. Sometimes I do, and I cry. I fight and scream and screech until my throat goes raw. My efforts are fruitless, and all the dark does is echo their false sentiments back to me. Even after all this time I never blamed him for not coming back. It wasn't his fault, not really. I did what I had to do to protect him.

Maybe he forgot about you, the dark whispers back to me. It took him this long.

No. No, no, this can't be. I'm his other half. Only his. He can't live without me! I have to be with him! He needs me! I know he can find me, he's the most stubborn one I know. I don't doubt that we'll reunite as one again one day. Then I'll be safe, warm and we'll be—

My eyelids grow heavy again. I'm falling asleep faster than I was before. I curl into my small body, holding on to the faint desire of freedom we once shared. More and more I could feel it slipping away.

Please come back for me, the last of my thoughts murmured. I’ll be good, I promise. I'll stay by your side forever like we promised long ago. Find me please, you're all I have. I miss you. I love you…

Around me the cell encasing me shuddered under the weight of my grief.

This time, the dark said nothing back.
