Chapter Text
It was a rough night after getting your ass handed to you. You didn’t realize the extent of it until you were coughing up a bit of blood. Shit…not good!
You just needed to get home but this chase led you beyond your city limits. You were in the Justice Gang territory. Last time you were here, the Green Lantern tried to get you to join but you turned him down.
You reached for your key fob and the one time you didn’t replace its batteries before leaving the house, it doesn’t work. The bigger bat is gonna give you an earful later.
You slid down the wall of an alleyway to regain your strength. Your hearing was becoming muffled and the last thing you heard was a…bark?
Your cape was being pulled by Krypto who was hauling you to Clark. You were hurt pretty badly that a slight blood trail was following you. In the cold fortress, Clark was tending to some business when he heard his best boy bark.
“What is it Krypto?” Clark immediately smelled blood and thought he got into something but he jumped into action when he saw you on the floor. “Oh no!”
He checked your pulse and thank goodness you were alive. He had his robots start administering medical treatment.
“Superman? She’s not kryptonian like you but we’ll do everything we can. May we remove the cowl?”
“Try not to…she’ll be very upset if you do.” Clark knew that you protected your identity with your life and it would be wrong to unmask you while unconscious.
Krypto stayed by your side the entire time which was odd to Clark. He was never this docile with anyone. After you were given life saving measures, you woke up in better shape than before.
“Where am I?” You looked around.
“You’re at my place.” Superman appeared.
“How did I get here?” You were surprised to see him.
“Krypto found you and he brought you here.” He saw him jump into your lap. “I am so sorry about that!”
You stopped him and scratched Krypto behind the ears. “Thank you boy. You’re a good dog.”
“How’d you end up so badly hurt?”
“Well the variety of criminals we have in Gotham are ruthless and they don’t take prisoners. Neither do I but it comes with the job.” You noticed your suit was off but your mask was still on. “Thanks for not taking this off.”
“I know you mentioned it that your identity was sacred.” He smiled a little. “Plus I know I’m the same way.”
“You pretend to be human, Superman?” You thought it was funny.
“Well yeah! Helps me blend in.” He watched Krypto relax in your lap.
“I should probably get going before the bigger bat has a panic attack.” You felt sore and the stitches haven’t set all the way yet.
“I can uh give him a call if you’d like.” He offered.
“He’s got a transmitter on me so he’ll probably call here in less than three seconds.” You saw one of the robots come in.
“Superman there’s a call on the console from a bat.”
“I’ll go take care of this.” He left the room and saw Batman on the holo. “Batman.”
“Superman. Where’s my partner?”
“She’s safe, Krypto found her in the city and brought her here. She’s resting and she’ll be able to go home tomorrow.” Superman could tell he was the protective type from the few interactions he’s had with him.
“Alright, I’ll send a ride to pick her up.”
“I will gladly escort her back to the city myself as a courtesy.” He offered.
“I’ll send you the precise coordinates.” He dropped a pin. “Don’t delay.”
“I won’t.” He hung up the call and went back to you.
You were wanting to remove your mask since it was way past your normal routine. “Did he give you a hard time.”
“He wants you home by tomorrow.” He sighed. “Is he normally this…uptight?”
“Sometimes but he means well. You mind if you shut off the lights? I kinda want to take off my mask.” You looked at him. “Can’t really out my secret.”
“You don’t trust me?”
“I’m already vulnerable and plus you’re not my boyfriend or anything, heck I’m not sure if we’re friends.” You were honest.
“Well maybe we can change that.” It dawned on him that he never made an effort to be your friend.
“You sure? I know we protect opposite ends of the world.” You saw how down to earth he seemed.
“I mean I think you’re cool, a bit aggressive but for the most part you live by a code to protect the innocent.” He pulled up a chair.
“I do my best.” You lived by the code because of Bruce, it’s what kept you both alive all this time.
“So are you and Batman partners on and off the clock?” He asked.
“More like a brooding brother type.” You chuckled a bit.
“Ah, I just kinda assumed he was like…your boyfriend.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
“Oh no! I’m a single lady for the most part, I try to keep my working life and personal life separate. Plus it would be hard to keep said boyfriend safe. Is there no super girlfriend?”
“Not really no, like you I keep my working life and personal life separate.” He was surprised by your response.
“You wouldn’t date a fan?” You teased him.
“Oh gosh no, too much pressure.” He chuckled.
“Thanks for saving my life, Superman. And thank you Krypto.” You gave him a smile.
Clark shut off the light but didn’t directly look at you. “You can take your mask off, I won’t look.”
You took it off, sighing in relief. “Now I can sleep, goodnight Superman.”
“Goodnight, Batwoman.” He left the room entirely.
From then on, Superman made occasional stops in Gotham just to check up on you when you weren’t looking. You were fighting off a robbery in progress when he showed up.
You’ve never seen him move so fast in person that you were able to wrap it up quickly. “Aren’t you a little far from your jurisdiction?”
“I just happen to be in the neighborhood.” He came up with the little lie on the spot.
You checked on the damage in the store, luckily it wasn’t too bad but definitely would need repairs. “These guys are so depraved.”
“And the store owner?”
“Batman took him to the hospital, was shot in the shoulder.” You sighed. “The police will come soon.” The sirens could be heard in the distance. “That’s my cue to leave.” You walked out, taking your rappel gun.
“Do you stay and observe?” He watched you.
“Yep.” You took the shot and launched upwards. “I stay and make sure those crooks get in the van.”
“I see.” He floated upwards and landed on the rooftop.
You were looking over the edge as the squad cars showed up. The crooks were rounded up and tossed into the van as expected. The shop was closed off for evidence.
“My work here is done.” You were about to take your leave.
“Wait! What do you normally do off the clock?” Clark didn’t exactly want you to leave yet.
“I just go home, Superman. Unless you have something in mind.” You looked at him.
“Uhh…not really. I just.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
You chuckled a bit. “Do I fluster you, Superman? Does my dark appearance make you nervous?”
“N-No it’s just I…I like you.” He was blushing. “Ever since that moment in the fortress.”
“You like me? That’s a first.” Your heart was beating quicker now and Clark could hear it.
“Well I do, you’re smart, you’re pretty,”
“Superman you don’t know my real name, I don’t know you either.” You took a step back from him.
“Maybe we can get to know each other more? Like a date? Please?” He took your hand.
You wanted to push him away, you really did. But you wanted him too much. “What’s your idea of a first date?”
“Dinner and a movie? I can pick you up after your patrol.” He offered.
“What movie?” You couldn’t help but smile at his tenacity.
“We can watch the newest movie!” He was thinking of the romantic comedy.
“Oh ‘Predators in the Woods’? I didn’t take you for a horror fan.” You chuckled. “Sure I’d love to see it.”
“Ah! Yeah! I’ll buy the tickets and popcorn.” He chuckled nervously.
“I’ll see you tomorrow night?” You heard your communicator ringing. “Hang on,” you answered it. “Yeah they picked them up. All wrapped up for Commissioner Gordon.”
Clark could hear Batman on the other end.
“I’ll see you at home.” You hung up. “That’s my cue to jet out of here.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow night.” He couldn’t believe you said yes.
“Bye, Superman.” You clicked your key fob, your car pulling up.
He watched you speed off into the night. He couldn’t believe he had a date with Batwoman.
