Chapter 1: Rainy, Sunny, Turbulent Days

Notes:

the beginning does take scenes from Our beloved summer, however as the story progresses, the influences aren't as strong :) this chapter establishes most of high school students yoonmin moments, but there will be additional memories revealed as the story goes.

anything in italics is the individuals (Yoongi or Jimin) talking in individual interviews. that might not make sense but trust me!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

"Okay, introduce yourself to the camera!"

Yoongi nods. "Hello, I'm Min Yoongi. I'm 19 years old and I'm a final year student at Yureum High School."

It was the beginning of June, and he tries to listen to whatever the teacher is saying. But he feels his eyes blinking longer, and he lays his head on his shoulder, attempting to ignore the producer who's right in front of him.

Unfortunately, he couldn't.

"You know, it's weird that I have to look at your direction while I'm trying to nap," Yoongi says. "Can I take this pesky camera off my desk?"

"Yoongi, you know the rules. Just pretend that the camera isn't there," Yeonwoo, the producer, responds. "Pretend it's not on your desk and do what you normally do."

"Pay attention, dimwit." Yoongi hears and looks to Jimin, who's sitting next to him. "Not to me, to the teacher."

"Unfortunately I have to work with this annoying brat," Yoongi says.

Yoongi rolls his eyes. The school bell rings, and Yoongi gets up.

"Where are you going?"

"None of your business." Yoongi hums, walking away when he hears Jimin talk to the producer.

"Is it really necessary for me to work with this idiot?"

Yoongi turns around. "Idiot?"

"Yes, idiot. You have a hard time staying still and you keep distracting me from my schoolwork."

"Then that sounds like a you problem, Jimin." Yoongi walks away.

Jimin scoffs and rolls his eyes.

"Hello, I'm Park Jimin. I'm 17 years old and the top student at Yureum High School.” Jimin hums. "I never knew Min Yoongi until the day he joined my class. For how I got myself in this documentary, I was told I had to go to the teacher's office. How it was urgent from Mr. Seo."

"Good morning, Mr. Seo. I was told there was something urgent you wanted to tell me."

Mr. Seo looks up from his computer and smiled. "Good morning Jimin, I have an offer to ask you."

"When Mr. Seo said that, I didn't realize what exactly he meant."

"What is it?"

"I have a producer friend who wants to do a documentary based on ordinary high school students lives. Except it's where the top and bottom ranked students are paired up for a month."

"And why would I agree to this?"

"Because I owe my friend a solid, and I think you would like the extra credit, since you have a 97, and even if you score a 100 on your final, you would only reach a 98. Doing this, I will give you enough points to reach that 100."

Jimin thinks about the deal. It doesn't sound half bad, and he has to put up with a low-ranking student for a month? Not too bad either.

"Would I get paid?"

"Of course. Frankly, I don't know how much, but you will be paid for agreeing to do this. I just thought I might throw in some incentives."

"I'll get back to you with an answer." Jimin responds, and Mr. Seo nods.

"I'll give you until this Friday." Jimin nods and bows before leaving the office.

"Which has led to this very moment." Jimin says, glaring at Yoongi. "Where I have to work with this dimwit."

"You got to stop calling me a dimwit."

"Why? You're ranked 177th out of the entire graduating class, you nap all the time, and you don't take school seriously. If anything you're the literal definition of a dimwit."

"So? Ranks don’t mean anything when you have a life outside of school.” Yoongi retorts.

“Well, when you want to go to a good university in Korea and have aspirations to be a journalist, then yes, ranks matter.”

“Or if you’re going to peak in high school and become nothing.”

Jimin scoffed as he continued looking at the camera. “Oh please, then what plans do you have for yourself outside of high school, hm?”

“It’s none of your business.”

“See, Jimin thinks it’s his business to know what I want to do with my life. Unfortunately for him, he won’t know that detail. But I guess I can tell the viewers hm? I want to run a small restaurant here. I don’t think of leaving this place, and since I helped to run my dad’s ramen shop, I know what I need to do to succeed.”

Okay, yes I was snarky and started it. I’m sorry for that, I’m sure the viewers already know that this is a documentary where the top student and low ranking student work together on a project. Anyways, I want to become a journalist. I love this town, but I know I can fly further, and that’s what my mom would’ve wanted.”

“That’s what your mom would've wanted?” The producer, Kim Yeonwoo, asked.

Oh, yeah I haven’t really gotten into detail about that. Well, my mom passed away when I was young. I was about, maybe 9 years old? She’ll always tell me to fly high and I should do what I want to do, even if it means leaving the small town or even South Korea.

Yeonwoo coughs, and Jimin and Yoongi look towards her. “Okay, let’s continue on. What do you envision life would be like in the next five years?”

“I want to live a quiet and peaceful life.” Yoongi says, before glancing at Jimin. “And to not interact with this guy over here, sitting opposite of me, acting like a brat.”

“I’m not a brat, be serious.” Jimin responds. “But I hope to live a successful life, working at a big newspaper company. That’s all I need anyways.”

“Not with that attitude.” Yoongi muttered.

“Huh?” Jimin said, looking at Yoongi with his brows raised. “What did you say?”

“Nothing.”

“Yeah right.”

Yeonwoo looks at her cameraman and shakes her head.

The first couple of days were hard on Jimin and Yoongi.

Well, more on Yoongi than Jimin anyway.

They have to sit next to each other, which came from some reluctance from Jimin.

“Okay I agree on working on this project with you, Yeonwoo PD-nim. Why does he have to sit next to me?” Jimin asked Yeonwoo. It was five minutes before class began, and he was doing some studying before class begins.

“All I’m asking for you to do is to get along with him. Can’t you just do that for me?”

Jimin sighs, as he pays attention to his notebook.

Yoongi rushes in the classroom as he finds his seat with Mr. Seo follows behind him. He gets behind a stand, introducing Yoongi to the class. "Okay class, Min Yoongi from class 7 will be joining us for this month. Please try your best to ignore the cameras."

Jimin looks up from his notebook, and sees Yoongi settling into his seat, placing his bag on the floor, and rubbing his eyes. Yoongi looks at the camera that's in front of him and Yeonwoo with her cameraman.

"Now pull out your notebooks, we're going to do a quick lesson before we begin with our mini quiz." Mr. Seo says, as everybody grabs their workbooks for the class. Yoongi lazily grabs his workbook from his backpack and lays his head down on top of it. Yoongi doesn’t feel tired, but he also doesn’t want to do any classwork.

"On page 75, there are some questions we have to answer before we begin with the lesson. I'll give everybody five minutes to read the instructions and answer the questions."

Jimin nods as he writes on his workbook. Yoongi ignores the teacher and keeps his head down.

After five minutes has passed, Mr. Seo writes the first question on the board, and turns to ask the class, “Okay who can answer this?”

Jimin raised his hand.

“Not you Jimin, literally anybody else?”

Jimin glances at Yoongi and the camera. He mouths, "watch this," and slaps his head.

“Yah!” Yoongi shouted at Jimin when he made eye contact with the teacher.

“Well thank you for volunteering Yoongi. What is the answer to question three?”

“Uh, fifteen?”

Jimin snickers, and Yoongi glares at him.

“Close, it’s thirteen.” The teacher sighed as he turned around to write the second question on the board. Yoongi puts his head down on the desk again.

“That actually hurt too. Jimin just hit me to answer some stupid question I didn't know the answer to. Not only I looked foolish, but Jimin found amusement from that. Genuinely, why is he this odd?" Yoongi says. "And you know what's the worst part? I actually tried to be friendly with him too."

Jimin is eating his food, ignoring Yoongi who's sitting across from him. Yoongi was playing with his food, when he accidentally spilled some milk as he tried to grab it. The milk spilled on Jimin's pants, and he got up immediately. "Sorry." Yoongi said.

Jimin glared at him before ripping a sauce packet, and squeezing the packet towards Yoongi, which lands on his shirt. He looks down and looks right at Jimin. "I didn't mean to spill milk and I said sorry."

"Should've just ate your food instead of playing with it." Yoongi looks at Jimin, dumbfounded, before turning his head to Yeonwoo.

"I didn't realize how much of my time at school had to be with Yoongi. We were even paired up together to play sports. Keep in mind, I'm a nerd and he's a loser. Us playing dodgeball was just pathetic."

Yoongi found himself paired up with Jimin on a game of dodge ball. Either they caught the ball, dodged the ball, or got hit.

And Yoongi was feeling the last option, being used as a shield by Jimin. Getting hit in his stomach and his face, he managed to dodge the ball the third time. Jimin couldn't say the same as Yoongi turned around to see Jimin on the ground, wincing in pain.

Holding out his hand, Yoongi asks, "You're okay?"

Jimin glares at Yoongi, before getting up and chasing Yoongi around.

"I was trying to be cordial, but he chased me because he didn't dodge the ball. It's dodgeball, what did he expect? And then a couple of days later, he ended up getting me in trouble."

Jimin was taking notes when he heard noise beside him. He looked at Yoongi, who was horribly attempting to hide his laughter while reading a book.

"While I was fed up with him, I didn't actually mean to get him in trouble."

Jimin grabbed the book and threw it on the ground, which grabbed Mr. Seo's attention from his computer.

"Min Yoongi! Was that you?"

Yoongi looked at Mr. Seo and at Jimin before responding, "No Mr. Seo, it wasn't me."

"I still got blamed. I told myself, it's just a couple more weeks and then I'll never have to interact with Jimin again."

After the study period ended, Jimin saw Yoongi leaving. After he left, he decided to stay behind and attempt to reason with Mr. Seo after everybody else left.

"Mr. Seo, I swear it was me who threw that book on the ground and not Yoongi." Jimin pleads.

"Jimin, I know you. You're an angel and an A-plus student, you would know better than that."

Jimin knows Mr. Seo is right, Jimin does know better than that. He gulps, "Still, it wasn't Yoongi's doing. You know I can barely lie, just don't write him up."

Mr. Seo looks at Jimin and sighs. "Fine, but if I hear any sound from you or him during the silent studying period at all this month, I will write both of you up."

Jimin nods and bows. "Thank you, Mr. Seo."

As Jimin leaves and closes the door behind him, he sees Yoongi standing outside the door. Jimin yelps. "What is wrong with you? Why are you outside?"

Yoongi ignores the questions and hands Jimin a cookie in a plastic bag. "Thanks for trying to clean up your mistake. I wouldn't know how to explain to my parents."

Jimin looks at the cookie. "You bought me a cookie?"

"No I made it myself before school." Yoongi sheepishly said. "If you like it, I could give more to you after filming."

Jimin nods. "Okay then, I'll see you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow." Yoongi said as he watched Jimin walk away, waiting a couple of seconds before leaving.

A couple weeks later, it was the last day of school. It was supposed to be a sunny afternoon, until light rain started pouring.

As Yoongi, Jimin, and Director Yeonwoo ran, looking for cover, Jimin found a cover. "Hey, there's a gazebo over there, let's go."

Arriving to the gazebo, Yeonwoo muttered, “Ah, shit.” Yeonwoo muttered. “I forgot my camera battery, you boys don’t mind waiting here right?”

Before Jimin and Yoongi could respond, Yeonwoo left the boys by themselves, running to go back to the school. Yoongi blinked and turned around to see a bench. He sits down and looks at the rain, saying, “I didn’t expect this to happen. Did the forecast even mention this?”

“No.” Jimin responded, joining Yoongi as he sits down beside him. "It said there was no chance of rain."

Yoongi hums. Of course, Jimin would watch the news. "Despite that, this is peaceful and calming. I enjoy this.”

“Of course you enjoy this,” Jimin remarked. “You love being lazy.”

“At least I’m not like you.” Yoongi responded. “No way you have to study that much just to be some journalist.”

“Well you have to.” Jimin says. “Besides, I want to get into Sungkyunkwan, so I have to study hard for the entrance exam. Besides, I'll help you enter Sungkyunkwan too."

Yoongi nods. "Well, I'm sure you'll get in. You work way too hard for all this effort to go to waste."

Jimin smiles. "Thank you, I hope so too."

They fall into a quick silence when Yoongi hears Jimin's stomach rumbling. He glances at Jimin, and slighly smiles at his embarrassment. He looks at his soaked backpack, opens it and rumbles through, pulling a wrap chocolate chip cookie. He hands the cookie to Jimin. Jimin looks at the cookie, and chuckles.

"It's not necessary Yoongi-yah,"

"You're hungry though."

Jimin softly smiles and grabs the cookie.

"Thanks," Jimin says, unwrapping the cookie and takes a bite. He hums. "It's so delicious, you really have a talent in this, Yoongi-yah."

Yoongi nods. They fall into a silence, Jimin eating the cookie when he sees Yoongi suddenly standing up and walking close to the edge of the gazebo. Jimin gets up as well, seeing Yoongi holding out his hand to feel the raindrops. “It’s a shame that our last day ended like this.”

Jimin nods. “And school ends tomorrow. We got our wish; we wouldn’t have to see each other again. Since we are in different classes, we can only see each other during the lunch periods, the weekends, and the yearly senior trip. But thank you for putting up with me Yoongi-yah.”

Jimin feels disappointed because, despite his and Yoongi’s bickering, Jimin grew to like Yoongi. And for their last day to end with them being soaked doesn’t help.

“I don’t want that wish anymore, Jimin-ah.” Jimin snapped out of his daze and looked at Yoongi, whose eyes are staring into Jimin’s. “I want to spend more time with you.”

“What are you saying? Like friends or?” Before Jimin could finish his sentence, Yoongi cups his face and their lips are mere inches away. Jimin’s shocked and whispered, “Yoongi…”

“Can I?” Yoongi whispered.

Jimin nods as their lips meet. As neither men has kissed anyone before, their teeth kept making contact. That didn’t matter to them, as they eventually got into a rhythm. They know that they have to keep the facade of being glad they won’t see each other again on camera.

Off camera, though? They’ll love.
