Liam Gallagher: When I feel heavy metal

Damon sighed. Here he goes again, taking the piss out of him on twitter. Liam needed to have a break from social media, it was getting quite sad. How did he have nothing better to do, considering he was currently on a sold out world tour. It felt like 1995 again.

He searches their names on Google. The image of them in each other’s faces is glaring back at him from his iPad screen. Liam staring at his lips. He was crazy, doing that in public. It was a miracle no one had clocked the sexual tension between them at the time.

Although, for Liam it was just a bit of fun in that moment. Damon already had feelings for him then, somehow, which he only realised 20 years later. Even though he treated him like dirt, and made fun of him constantly. That was a recurring theme in Damon’s relationships in those years, choosing people who lacked respect for him. Maybe that’s what he had thought he deserved.

He and Liam had both moved on. Liam had children, multiple wives, and Damon had his daughter and saw a lot of other people. He wondered if Liam thought about their relationship in the same way he did. With longing and regret. Their relationship was doomed from the start, but maybe he had ended it prematurely. He would never know. It was obvious he was still on Liam’s mind, but impossible to tell whether it was in reminiscence or regret.

Damon wasn’t short of things to be proud of. He had multiple successful musical projects, a family he was proud of, and he and Graham had rebuilt the friendship that they had lost somewhere during their careers.

He didn’t feel the same nostalgia Liam and Noel seemed to. He didn’t want to relive the glory days, even though he thought of that time fondly now. Yes, he had Liam’s twitter notifications on, just for updates, to see how he was doing. It’s not like he replied to him or anything. Liam would never know. It was unlikely he’d ever speak to him again; Damon was actually better friends with Noel nowadays. Somehow. Liam would probably never forgive him for their breakup. His pride had been wounded, being broken up with by a man, not to mention one who he had hated for so long, one who he viewed as inferior.

Damon didn’t want to dwell on him for too long. He checked up on Liam sometimes, out of interest, but nothing else. He sometimes wondered if Liam thought of him, wondered what he was doing. If he and Noel were on good terms again, maybe Noel had told him they were now friends. Liam would have found that hilarious. Damon could still hear his laugh.

They had run into each other a few times over the years. Once, they had bumped into each other at a shop in London. Liam had said he was looking rough, and that his bald head made him look like an egg. Damon had told him he was looking happy and went on his way. He didn’t have time to waste talking to his bitter ex. Another time, Liam was skulking around in the corner at a mutual friend’s party, probably hiding from him. He had made eye contact with Damon and looked away, surprising him with the lack of insult. Maybe he had mellowed in the years they had been apart. Unlikely.

No more thinking about him, Damon thought. Liam probably didn’t waste all this time daydreaming about his exes. That wouldn’t be rock and roll enough for him.

Liam enjoyed winding people up on twitter. He was sick of seeing that fucking photo of him and Damon all over his timeline. People seemed to love it. Not nice being reminded of your ex every time you opened Twitter to talk about yourself and your band. Even though it was unintentional, the words from people on there stung sometimes. Noel already took the piss out of him enough, saying he had stolen Liam’s guy or whatever. Prick. He wishes he never confided in him that they had been together, although he didn’t know what he had been so afraid of. Noel couldn’t have given less of a fuck what he was up to as long as it didn’t damage the band’s image. Damon had made sure that didn’t happen by kicking him to the kerb and leaving him alone.

He shouldn’t spend any more time thinking about his dickhead of an ex. He was currently having the best year of his life: his voice sounded better than ever, him and Noel were on good terms again, and he was currently making millions doing what he loved the most. He didn’t need Damon.

It’s not like he was pining for him or anything. It had been almost 30 years. He was just using the feelings he had to motivate himself. Last time he had seen Damon, it hadn’t been a tearful reunion. He had just ignored him, not even having enough courage to go up to him and tell him to fuck off. He just stared. He was weak when it came to him. He had never really felt like he had with Damon ever again. There was a time he had thought he was the one. Maybe he was. But they had let their careers and fear get in the way, and Liam wasn’t going to be the one to instigate a reconciliation.

It had taken Liam about twenty years to actually come to terms with his sexuality, to stop feeling ashamed about his feelings for Damon. Despite his acceptance, he still couldn’t bring himself to be with any other men. Damon was the only one worth fighting all the pain for. He had never felt uncomfortable or awkward around Damon like he did when he tried to meet other men, even though bisexuality was more accepted now than it was when he and Damon were together. Dating just wasn’t for him. He had an instant connection with Damon, which was impossible with anyone else. He understood. Mostly. Maybe it had started with hatred, but it had bloomed into love. When they had ended things, it had left a gaping hole in his life. Although he tried not to have regrets, he did wish he had just said fuck all the secrecy, been honest with his family, and stopped hiding as much from. They couldn’t have come out, but maybe they could have been less terrified. Been honest with the people close to them. Maybe that could have saved them. Maybe they would have made it to a time when they could come out and not ruin their careers.

Liam was considering reaching out to Damon, inviting him to the Wembley gig. Just to show off. He wasn’t interested in what Damon was like now, whether he still laughed in the same annoying way, whether Liam’s voice still had the same effect on him as it did in ‘95.

He settled for tweeting about him instead. Let Damon come to him.
