Joan Garrick Memories

Summary:

A series of in-between scenes that feature or told from the perspective of Joan Garrick, especially regarding Bart Allen

Notes:

After re-watching "Early Warning", especially the part when Virgil remembers the reason Bart and Jaime were "AWOL" (Absent Without Official Leave) which was for Joan Garrick's funeral. Literally saying "Missus Garrick was so crash". I took this to mean that he had met Joan Garrick at some point and that there is more to her than just being the wife of a Flash and her choice (along with Jay's) to adopt/foster Bart. It lead to me thinking about what could be some short but meaningful moments that highlight how much of a maternal role she played in not only Bart's life but also Barry and Iris's and advice she would give as someone how had lived a pretty long life alonside . I have a couple of drafts I had started and one I could post soon, but they need a bit more time to develop. In the mean time, I hope you all enjoy the beginning of the "Joan Garrick Memories".

Chapter 1: A New Addition

Chapter Text

“I ought to thank you and Jay for agreeing to watch Bart.” Iris said. She was beyond grateful to the elder woman not only as someone older and wiser to have lived the life she is currently living, but also choosing to house a young time-traveling speedster(her grandson) without a second thought.

“Iris, you didn’t think we’d leave you and Barry to look after your future grandson while also raising two little speedsters of your own?” Joan posed.

Iris looked stunned. “But-”

“No “buts” those are for sitting on.” Joan gave the mom-to-be a smile. “You, Barry, and Wally have been family to us, regardless of blood relations. Granted, we all share having a speedster in our lives or live at a slightly faster pace.”

Iris gave the older woman a tired smile.

Joan placed her hand over Iris’s. “Let me and Jay worry about Bart.”

“You didn’t have to Joan, the Team-” Iris began, only for the elder woman to stop her.

“We will have a long talk with Bart about that, but Iris, what kind of thirteen year old builds a time-machine to travel back to the past to watch his grandfather save a city and also gives out ‘spoilers’?”

Iris blinked then realized what Joan was hinting at. Bart arrived not only on the day of Joan and Jay’s wedding anniversary, but also the day the Flash had to fight Neutron, a super-powered individual who almost leveled Central City. He also could not return back to his future with his time machine. There were also a few comments the time-traveler let slip.

I always wanted to do this. (While hugging Barry)

Don’t answer that! (When Iris was about to answer her phone.)

She knew there was much to unpack and even discuss with the youngest speedster, but now is not the time. Especially with the young boy passed out on the living room couch, not long after eating his fill. Iris couldn’t get Bart’s reaction to the amount of food prepared, that about a third of it was for him which was far more than the typical serving for one non-speedster. Bart was still wearing his suit and had a blanket draped over his lithe body (courtesy of Iris).

“Thank you.” Iris said. “I have no idea what I would do if I had not met you or Jay.”

Joan giggled “I am sure you would have figured it out on your own. And you are going to be an excellent mother.”

“Because of my grandson.” Iris smiled.

“Because you are someone who can keep up with a speedster and tell him to slow down.”

“Yes,”  Iris glanced at the young speedster snoozing on the couch, then sighed. “But when those speedsters are children that’s a different story.”
