But not unloved

Summary:

Just a small glimpse into early parenthood.

Notes:

The beginning of this scene came to me a few weeks back, but the end took it's time. It's just a very short scene while I try to sort out my own life and mind.

Work Text:

It was late at night when Alex walked back to the living room, after having taken a nap. The room was bathed in a soft, warm glow from a single lamp in the corner.

Her eyes fell on her partner who laid against the back of the couch with his long legs stretched out, staring at the ceiling. He securely blanketed the back of a tiny infant that lay on his chest with his hand.

She leaned on the door frame with her shoulder and soaked up the scene in front of her. This was her family. Unplanned, but not unloved. And she did love them; fiercely.

Her eyes were met as he had taken his gaze from the ceiling as he noticed she was watching him. They just looked at each other. A soft, exhausted smile crept onto his features. It was like he was reading her mind or he was simply thinking the same thing.

She went over and sat next to him on the couch, leaning her head on his shoulder. "You look like hell." She spoke quietly. He grinned and suppressed a laugh, looking at her. "But don't worry, I still love you." Now that their love for each other was in the open, she freely told him whenever she could. "He finally fell asleep?"

"Yeah, but I think I'll just stay here and not risk him waking up again." Alex hummed in agreement. Their son had been fussy in the evenings and nights, refusing to settle down. Bobby put his free arm around her. "You had a good nap?"

"I feel like taking another one. Or sleeping for the rest of my life maybe. But then I'd miss you and Max."

"We'd miss you, too. So maybe just another nap? Or even just a full eight hours of sleep for a start."

"I feel like I'm doing nothing but laying around all day every day."

"Give it some time. You just made a human. And you're not doing nothing, you take care of him when you send me to bed because I can't string two words together."

"I still feel like I should be able to do more." She grimaced.

"Alex…"

"I know, I know." She heaved a sigh and they silently watched their son sleep.

"He really is wonderful..." She said, looking up at Bobby, who raised his brows at her. "When he's sleeping." Alex smiled when she made him chuckle. It unfortunately also woke their son up again.

They sighed in unison. Alex got up and grabbed Max. "I got him. You can go to sleep, if you want."

"You sure?" He doubtfully looked at her.

Alex just inclined her head at him with a serious expression.

"Alright, alright." He raised his hands in defeat and got up. "I'll go. You know where to find me, if you change your mind."

"I won't. Now shoo." She grinned at him, rocking Max on her hip, trying to settle him again.

He gazed at her for a long time, his eyes softening. She drew her brows together, asking him if he was willing to share his thoughts. He just leaned in and pressed a kiss to her temple. "I love you." Then he stepped around her and vanished down the hall. "See you later."

She looked after him until he was out of sight, before she shook her head, looking at Max. "Your dad's definitely an acquired taste. Good thing we love him anyway, eh?"

You know what to do. Kudos button is over yonder if you liked it, and if you really liked it, the box for telling me what you thought is also around here somewhere. I swear I've seen it being around.
