Hanakotoba

Summary:

Izuku had managed to get into the hero course of UA even with his weak quirk. He hadn't really thought about how meeting his classmates would go, but he didn't expect this.

Work Text:

Izuku had never been good at handling his quirk. From his research, professionals said that tended to happen with more 'natural' or 'wild' quirks, though it was hard to sift through the anti-heteromorph discrimination to find articles with actual scientific basis. Regardless, there was some basis to it, and Izuku's own experience wasn't an exception.

Right now was a good example.

Izuku groaned as pink amaryllis (shyness) bloomed from his curls at the attention of his new classmates. He resisted the urge to hide his face in his hands, instead glancing up at the board and noting his seat in the arrangement.

Well, at least the shouty glasses guy from the entrance exam wasn't here. And neither was Kacchan, so basically he was in the clear.

Or so he thought, only to be proven wrong as he sat down and was immediately tapped on the shoulder by the student behind him. Izuku turned, a little unnerved by the focused intensity in the gray-blue eyes of the blonde haired boy.

"I'm Monoma Neito, nice to meet you." The boy reached out a hand for a handshake as Izuku turned in his seat.

"Midoriya Izuku." Izuku replied.

He heard someone else in the class start to say something, but it was already too late as Monoma grasped Izuku's hand in a shake with a grin. Izuku gasped as bright flowers began to bloom in Monoma's hair, stems breaking through the floor around them as well. Orange lilies (energy, enthusiasm) and narcissus (pride, self esteem) popped into existence, petals unfurling rapidly.

Izuku squeaked, letting go of Monoma's hand. Pink petals drifted from his own head as his own quirk seemed to falter.

"My quirk is called Copy. What's yours?" Monoma plucked one of the narcissus from its stem, wincing slightly at the pain he must've felt but still holding the small bloom in his hand, examining it curiously.

"Ah- it's- uh- just, just Plant Manifestation. It used to be called Flower Manifestation, but…"

"Wait, were you the guy that made the giant sakura tree?" The student closest to the door, a handsome boy with dark brown hair and eyes said. "I saw that, it was in the next city over! Is it true you encased the zero pointer in that tree?"

"Ah, well…" Izuku ducked his head, wringing his hands as clovers (good luck) and violets (honesty) grew from his head, a lot of the clover growing in scattered bunches around his sneakers as well. "Yeah, kinda." He mumbled. "I didn't mean to… it was a weird fluke…" He added on, awkward.

"I saw it too." Another student, a boy with a full bodied mantis mutation and a lime green mohawk, crossed his arms, nodding at Izuku. "It was cool."

Some of the clover stuck around, but the violets dropped in favor of irises (good news) and pink roses (happiness). Izuku grimaced at all the petals he'd have to sweep up after class. They'd fade over time, but technically as a quirked body part that he generated, they had to go in the biohazard bin after class

"Can you control what plants you make, then? Or control the plants themselves?" Monoma asked, still looking at the flower in his hand. Pansies (thoughtful, caring) bloomed throughout his hair, going unnoticed even as orange petals drifted around him.

"Ah, it's… I'm still figuring that out." Izuku said lamely. This is why he preferred just keeping his head down and not talking to anyone. It was embarrassing to shed a florist's shop worth of flowers every class. He could only hope these new classmates wouldn't try to provoke flowers out of him like his old ones had.

"I look forward to working with you, Midoriya-san." A girl with long thorny vines for hair nodded at him. "I am Shiozaki Ibara, and my quirk is Vines."

Izuku's eyes widened, how had he not noticed her? "I- yeah!" He said, voice cracking. Jasmine (friendship, grace) bloomed, the tiny white flowers fragrant where they crawled through his curls, a vine tickling his ear. He was unreasonably excited to see another student with a plant quirk, considering he knew that people with plant quirks could be heroes.

It was just… rare. And usually they didn't have a weak quirk like Izuku's.

The tree had been crazy. Izuku hadn't known what had happened, one moment he was running towards the nice girl who had been trapped in the rubble, (shedding yellow primrose (desperation) petals as he ran) and the next he had fallen and was just as helpless as he stared up at the massive foot of the zero pointer looming over them both. He had really thought he was gonna die, and then…

Well, then the world was full of pink petals and the scent of sakura, and then he was in Recovery Girl's office. It hadn't mattered, he had gotten zero points after all, not able to fight even a single robot with his weak quirk, and the one that he did finally fight was worth zero points.

Then there was the rescue points, and well… here he was.

The large door to class 1-B swung open again, revealing a tall, broad man that Izuku recognized easily as the Blood Hero: Vlad King. His heart skipped with excitement and a mixture of daffodil (respect) and freesia (childishness) bloomed in a riot of yellows. Izuku winced, glancing back at Monoma, whose flowers had detached and were around him on the floor. It made sense that Copy would have some kind of time limit or could just be turned off.

Monoma just smiled slightly, almost a smirk, but there was no judgment there, no snapping at him to just control his weak quirk like Kacchan would've done.

"Welcome to UA's hero course, Class 1-B." Vlad King said loudly, catching everyone's attention and silencing the excited whispers. "I am the Blood Hero: Vlad King, and I can't wait to see how this class will grow as heroes in your time at UA."

Notes:

There are no plans to continue this. All flower symbolism was from researching Japanese flower symbolism and wikipedia.

As for the tree he grew: yeah Izuku was actually more powerful but with being constantly beaten down (and not having someone with a similar quirk in the home to help him) he didn't even think something like that was possible, let alone try it considering quirk usage laws. Being in 1-B means he will have a lot of support to nurture his quirk and his capabilities.
