Winter Watch

Summary:

During a long winter mission in the mountains, Giyuu and Shinobu are forced to share a small hunter’s cabin while waiting for a demon that only appears once every few nights.

Work Text:

The hunter’s cabin stood alone in the deep winter forest, a small wooden structure half-buried beneath layers of snow that had accumulated over weeks of relentless storms. Inside, the air was only slightly warmer, thin lines of frost already forming along the edges of the window frames. A small hearth sat near the center of the room, its fire crackling as it struggled to push warmth through the cramped space.

Shinobu had prepared for the mission. She had known the temperature would be harsh and hence, packed accordingly before leaving headquarters. Several extra layers of clothing had been folded neatly into her travel bag: woolen underlayers, thicker scarves, spare gloves, and even medicinal herbs intended to ward off illness in extreme weather.

Yet, the mountain cold was relentless. Even while wearing nearly every layer she had brought, the chill seemed to slip beneath the fabric and dig deep into her bones.

During the day, she ignored it to focus on the task they had been assigned. The Master’s orders had been clear: she and the Water Hashira, Tomioka Giyuu, were to observe the nearby forest where reports of demon activity had surfaced in recent weeks. They were to remain here in the cabin for several days and gather information before deciding whether further action was necessary.

A simple assignment, or at least it should have been. But on the second night staying here with Giyuu, she already felt something was wrong with her. Her eyes felt heavy, and there was a strange warmth in her cheeks despite the biting cold. Her limbs became slightly sluggish when she moved, as though her body was slowly losing the battle against the freezing air.

Shinobu had never been someone who complained easily, and so she had no desire to draw concern from the partner sharing the cabin with her.

However, by the time the moon had climbed high above the trees, the fever had fully taken hold. Her awareness faded in and out like the wavering light of the fire, as though she were drifting back and forth between sleep and waking. The sound of firewood shifting in the hearth reached her first, accompanied by the crackle of flames being stirred back to life.

Then footsteps: slow, steady steps crossing the wooden floor. When Shinobu forced her eyes open, the world appeared a little blurred around the edge, but she could still make out the tall silhouette moving near the fire.

Giyuu.

Crouching before the hearth, he fed another piece of wood into the flames and adjusted the logs so the fire would burn stronger. Orange light flickered across his features, which cast shifting shadows along the planes of his face.

Once the fire had steadied, he stood and walked toward her sleeping space.

“Kochou.”

His voice was low. She tried to answer but only managed a soft murmur.

Giyuu knelt beside her, his movements noticeably gentler than usual as he slipped one arm behind her shoulders and helped her sit up. The warmth of his hand through the layers of fabric felt grounding somehow, comforting amidst the spinning haze of her fever.

“You should drink this,” he said.

The bowl he held contained simple broth, likely prepared from whatever supplies they had brought with them. He held it with patience while she took small sips, waiting until she finished before setting it aside.

The cloth resting against her forehead had grown warm from her fever, so Giyuu replaced it with a fresh one dipped in cool water. His fingers brushed against her temple, and Shinobu watched him through half-lidded eyes.

She had spent years observing people, studying their expressions and mannerisms, learning to notice the smallest details others might overlook. Tomioka Giyuu, however, had always been unusually difficult to read. Most of the time, his face remained calm to the point of near emptiness.

Yet tonight, his brows were drawn together ever so slightly, and his eyes stayed on her longer than necessary. Beneath the usual stillness of his eyes, there was something unsettled. Concern. Perhaps even a hint of fear. As though he was afraid that if he looked away for too long, she might disappear.

Shinobu blinked. Surely it must be my imagination. The fever had already begun to distort her senses; it would not be surprising if it had started inventing things as well.

Still, even if it was only an illusion, she found herself strangely happy to see it.

_

The hours passed way too slowly. Outside, the storm had subsided until the wind dwindled into little more than a distant whisper moving through the trees.

However, Shinobu’s condition worsened. The fever that had once burned hot beneath her skin now sent actual tremors through her body, to the point that her teeth began to chatter.

Giyuu, sitting next to her bed all the time, immediately rose to add more wood to the hearth, coaxing the flames higher until the entire room glowed with renewed heat. He returned and adjusted the blankets around her shoulders, tucking them firmly so that no cold air could slip through.

That was not enough, however, and she still shivered.  A crease formed between his brows before he removed his haori and draped the thick fabric over her as an extra layer.

The shivering did not stop. After a quiet heartbeat, Giyuu began loosening the buttons of his uniform.

Shinobu blinked in confusion.

“Tomioka-san…?”

The man removed the heavy outer layers of his winter clothing and set them aside, then lifted the blanket and slipped beneath it beside her. The sudden addition of his body heat spread through the confined space almost right away.

Now that the layers of his uniform were no longer in the way, the sight of his body was impossible to ignore. His shoulders were broad, his chest firm with the solid strength built through years of training and battle as a Pillar. In the dim firelight, the contours of his muscles moved each time he breathed.

Shinobu’s face flushed deeper despite the cold. Yet the warmth– it felt so wonderful. Almost instinctively, she leaned closer, and the moment her body touched his, heat seeped through her own clothing and chased away the painful chill that had plagued her all night. Taking that as a sign, she curled closer against him.

Giyuu’s body tensed at the sudden contact.

“If this is uncomfortable,” he said after a moment, “you should tell me.”

Shinobu shook her head weakly.

“No… It’s very comfortable.”

Encouraged by the warmth, she moved even closer if possible, resting against him until her trembling finally began to ease.

The fire crackled softly nearby, casting golden light across the blankets where they lay together. Her breathing slowed, her mind wandering lazily through the haze of fever and warmth. The consistent heat of Giyuu’s skin drew her closer without conscious thought.

Her lips brushed lightly against his collarbone. Giyuu inhaled sharply.

“Kochou…”

Drawn by the warmth, she tilted her head slightly until her lips found his.

It was soft.

Her lips were still cool from the lingering cold while his were warm, a contrast that sent a shiver through her body. Slowly, almost cautiously, his lips parted. Shinobu’s tongue brushed lightly against his lower lip, tentative, before the tip of her tongue slipped past the slight opening between his lips.

The warmth inside his mouth was incredible; Giyuu’s breath caught as her tongue slid deeper, brushing gently against his once before retreating again. His own tongue then met hers in a hesitant sweep; they brushed together once, then again, the contact growing more and more familiar as their breaths mingled between them.

And each time, it carried so much warmth. Shinobu felt it spreading through her body, chasing away the last traces of cold that had clung to her earlier. Her hand rested unconsciously against his chest as she leaned further into the kiss, and their tongues moved together again, gliding urgently before parting and meeting once more in a desperate rhythm, until exhaustion overcame them both.

Outside, the storm had completely stopped.

When Shinobu woke, the first thing she noticed was the warmth still surrounding her, and then the rise and fall of breathing beside her. Giyuu was still asleep; one arm rested loosely around her shoulders, holding her close even in unconsciousness.

Shinobu tested her condition. It seemed the fever had broken, though her body still felt slightly weak. She breathed a sigh of relief.

But wait. If she had been that sick last night, that meant…

He might catch my fever as well.

Carefully, Shinobu reached up and brushed her fingers through his dark hair. She tenderly smoothed the slightly disheveled strands away from his forehead.

“You really stayed with me all night.” She leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against his cheek. “Thank you, Tomioka-san.”

Her fingers were buried in his hair as she watched him sleep.

This time, she thought with a smile, she would be the one taking care of him in return.
