Non Ecliptic

Summary:

Dennis Whitaker has struggled with seizures since he was a teen. He finally gets the support he needs

Notes:

Long time AO3 reader first time poster. I will update this as I make it and it’ll be over when I get bored of it lol. No beta editor so ignore my mistakes (there r a lot I’m aware and i just don’t care enough to fix them). I’ve read a lot of hucklerabbot fics at this point and have taken inspiration from their dynamics in them.
Also! i have non-epileptic seizures so all descriptions are based on my experiences with them, however i have personally never gone unconscious from them.

Chapter 1

Summary:

Dennis has an off morning

Chapter Text

Dennis has never been a morning person. He never liked when the roosters woke him up at dawn and his mother dragged him out of bed to help with household chores. When he went to college he hoped to get some kind of escape from that, only to come to the harsh realization that becoming a doctor meant he would be forced to keep similar hours. But he had already been kicked out for it (among other- more deeply personal- things) and was drowning in student loans so he had to stick with it. He really does enjoy it too. After years of feeling misplaced on his family’s farm, constantly fucking up what they saw as the easiest tasks, he finally feels like he knows what he is doing and where he is going. He had been working at PTMC for about a year now and his routine had more or less stabilized despite his shift rotations. Every few weeks he ends up on night shift for about a week, but the recovery isn’t as horrible as it had been the first few times he switched.
That being said, he still is not a morning person.
His alarm goes off at 5:45 am, an hour and 15 minutes before his shift, giving him enough time to force himself up, shower, and hopefully force some food into his stomach before it has even really woken up. He is used to it- for the most part- but he still hates it. It doesn’t help that the heater in Trinity’s apartment is always broken and the cold makes his skin numb, but it is definitely better than sleeping in an abandoned hospital room so he couldn’t complain. It isn’t abnormal for him to feel like crap in the mornings, so it doesn’t phase him when standing from his bed makes his head spin for a second, or that he is emotionally and physically drained. He doesn’t even really think about the fact that he stood in the shower for 10 minutes zoning out, almost unable to move, before finally washing his hair and getting out. Because realistically he must just be tired.
He walks into the kitchen, still a little out of it, where Trinity is sitting drinking coffee and scrolling on her phone. A protein bar wrapper lays in front of her. She looks up at him, giving him kind of a sideways glance.
“You look like shit huckleberry.”
“You always say that,” he says, walking past her towards the coffee pot.
She gets up from her chair, bringing the wrapper to throw away and looking at him a little longer.
“And it’s always true,” she says, smiling at him.
She means it with no real ill intent, the two have formed a strong sibling-like relationship and usually he would say something smart back. Today he just rolls his eyes and pours his coffee before grabbing his own protein bar from the pantry, ignoring how his knees threaten to give away with each step. He decides not to eat for now because the idea of it makes him feel kind of sick, and shoves the bar in his pocket before following Trinity out the front door.
It isn’t a long drive, but Dennis feels like it’s a lot longer than usual. His eyes drift in and out of focus and it feels like his heart is pumping harder and slower than it should be. He isn’t entirely there when the car shuts off, only clocking back in when Trinity punches his arm. He lets out an injured groan before glaring at her.
“You good man? I don’t think you’ve moved in like five minutes.”
He looks at the clock, it has probably been longer than that.
“Yeah, just tired,” and he really believes it.
She seems to as well, giving him a “sucks for you” before getting out of the car.
He should be getting out of the car too, he realizes, and so he does. Walking into the building he feels heavy, and the lights make him blink rapidly for a minute before he gives up trying to actually adjust to them. He is just going through the motions when he borrows scrubs from the machine and changes into them. He glances at his phone, then looks at it a little longer when he realizes he didn’t actually process the time. 6:57, he should really be by the nurses’ station for handover. He isn’t really sure how it got to be so late, maybe he took longer to get out of the car than he realized or zoned out in the shower more than he thought but it didn’t really matter. He’s on hospital time now which doesn’t stop for anyone.
He makes it over for handover, noting Robby debriefing with Abbot separately like they always do and gets moving on his cases. The hospital had a fairly busy night, dealing with a major car accident, so the waiting room was backed up. Being a resident, Dennis was tasked with sutures and fevers and whatever other menial tasks the ED waiting room required. He managed to keep himself focused, moving through cases without breaks to keep himself distracted from the fuzzy edges of his brain. He was so distracted that he didn’t even realize Abbot hadn’t left until he started his charting around 11am.
“You’re still here?” He asked after watching him check in with the nurses.
He smiled at him for a second in a way that made him a little more dizzy than he already felt.
“Overtime. Following up on some patients from last night.” He finished speaking, then took a moment to look him over, “have you eaten today?”
He knew it was coming. His attendings took notice of his poor eating habits, forcing him to break every few hours to find something to keep his energy up. He didn’t mean to not eat most of the time he just forgot he needed to. Now however he was avoiding it, knowing if he sat down to eat his body might crash even further.
“I had a protein bar before my shift,” he lied, returning his eyes to the computer screen.
Abbot eyes him a little longer, “you should take a break and get a fruit or something.”
Dennis continues to look mindlessly at his charting, feeling the fact that he wasn’t focused on anything, letting his mind wander to the heaviness still in his body.
“I’m fine, honestly.”
He looks at Abbot for a second, who doesn’t look like he believes anything he is saying, as a way to maybe distract himself again. He goes to say something, but is cut off by Dennis’s pager. He glances at it a beat longer than he probably should have needed to.
“Head trauma coming in in critical condition, gotta go.”
If he does try to say anything else, Dennis doesn’t hear it as he moves towards the trauma bay. Robby and a few of his fellow residents are waiting when he gets here. Robby glances at him, and smiles a little before the ambulance rolls in and he returns to his usual serious expression.
It isn’t horribly difficult. 16 year old trying to show off to his friends on his e-bike and ended up busting his head open. The bleeding has stopped by the time he gets to them and they’re mostly working to get his pressure back up. He needs a blood transfusion, along with a few iv medications before he is stable again. It’s quick and uncomplicated and he is quickly conscious again and ready to go up to CT.
Once the gurney is wheeled away things settle quickly. Dennis loses his laser focus on keeping the boy alive and realizes he’s dizzy. Really dizzy. People around him move to take off gloves and trauma gowns while he stands there frozen. He is pale, and vacant, and standing off center. Robby is the one to notice. He begins to approach him slowly like a wild animal he’s scared will run off.
“Hey, kid, are you doing alright?”
He blinks a few times, almost involuntarily. His eyelids shudder and his knees almost buckle beneath him. He tries to look at Robby, to move, to say something. He manages to get his mouth open and stutter something incomprehensible before losing consciousness and collapsing in on himself.

It happens fast. Robby just asked if Dennis was alright, only for him to collapse a few seconds later. Luckily he was close enough to catch him before he hit the ground.
“Shit can I get some help over here?”
It took a second for him to realize he wasn’t just unconscious. But as he attempted to lower him closer to the ground until they got a gurney he realized his body was tense and shaking, his legs and head jerking.
“He’s seizing, someone start timing.”
More hands come to support his body. A gurney has been supplied but his sporadic, violent, movements make it more dangerous to move him than for him to stay near the ground.
“Dana help me lay him down.”
Dana, one of the people supporting him, moves his legs out from under him a bit and places his feet on the ground while Robby settles his head sideways on his lap. Residents and nurses move around them, starting to secure monitors to his body. He struggles to breathe, lungs tense and throat tight. His unconscious body coughs and gags as his lungs compress themselves. The shaking stops after 2 minutes and 54 seconds, Javadi supplies. As soon as it’s over he’s hoisted onto the bed and an oxygen mask is secured over his face. Everyone is talking over each other, nurses supplying vitals and Robby giving orders. It takes another two minutes for Dennis to wake up, and even then he’s barely awake. His vision is blurry when he opens his eyes and the lights are too bright. He lets out a choked groan before Robby notices he’s awake. He gets to his level and speaks to him directly.
“Hey kid, you’re ok. You had a seizure but your vitals are ok and we’re gonna get you up to CT, ok?”
Dennis just blinks at him, trying to get his eyes and head to catch up. He didn’t understand any of what he said and he can’t figure out who’s talking to him. Robby keeps looking at him, looking for any sign of real recognition. He just gets more dazed blinking in response.
Then he starts to panic. His breathing becomes shallow and he starts looking around frantically, trying to make sense of the fuzzy world around him. He feels hands all over him and hears monitors beeping and everyone talking way too fast and sees a face in front of him that doesn’t look quite like anyone he knows. He doesn’t understand any of it and it scares him. The face turns away for a second and says something to one of the blurry people in the background.
“He’s too out of it, give him a sedative.”
He didn’t register it but he started to cry at some point and he tries to push himself up but the person in front of him places a firm hand on his chest.
“It’s ok Whitaker you’re safe. We’re helping you.”
He still doesn’t understand it but before he can be scared about it his eyes feel heavy, and everything around him fades out of focus again.

Jack is getting ready to leave when Robby pages him. All it says is URGENT. He has already clocked out and changed, but he still rushes back to the ED. The worst of the commotion has died down when he arrives. He enters trauma 2 where Robby is standing next to Dennis, now asleep on a gurney. He spots Jack, giving him an exhausted look before coming over to explain. He runs through it in the same clinical way he does with all cases, but his concern is evident.
“He’s going up to CT now, but I need to stay here,” he finishes.
Jack nods, he knows what he’s asking. Robby doesn’t need to keep explaining because he knows he wants him to go up to CT and make sure Dennis is ok. He doesn’t need to be convinced to do it. Nurses are getting him ready for transport. Jack places a hand on Robby’s shoulder and gives it a squeeze, before following them.

Chapter 2

Summary:

Dennis comes to after his seizure and finds Robby and Jack sitting with him

Chapter Text

Dennis opens his eyes slowly, adjusting to the harsh hospital fluorescents. He can feel his body again, feel something other than crushing weight forcing him towards the ground. Once he’s adjusted to the light, his eyes wander around the unfamiliar room. He knows he’s in the hospital- his hospital- but he’s never been in this room. It looks a lot like all the other patient rooms, but the walls have purple accents. It’s calmer than the ED. It takes him a second to register that he’s the patient, and by the time he does he also realizes Jack Abbot is sitting next to him watching him. He meets his eyes, making it clear that he’s aware.
“Hey Dennis, do you know where you are?”
He asks it in a very calm tone, it's the same way Abbot always talks to him. He nods slightly, his head still feeling a little heavy and like it may fall forward if he puts in any more effort.
“PTMC,” he manages out hoarsely.
Abbot smiles at him a little bit, “good job. Do you know who I am?”
He does know, he knew immediately when he saw him. It takes a moment for his mouth to catch up still though.
“Dr. Abbot.”
“That’s right, do you remember what happened?”
He considers it, trying to untangle the last few hours and coming up short. He shakes his head slightly.
“That’s ok. You’ve been on some pretty heavy sedatives.”
Abbot maintains eye contact with him, he realizes he has been this whole time as he always does. He isn’t great at it usually, but he’s gotten more used to it with Abbot.
“You were working on a head trauma case, do you remember that?”
He nods, he remembers the kid stabilizing and being sent off for more tests.
“During cleanup you collapsed and started seizing. I didn’t see it but Micheal- Dr. Robby- said that it was intense. You seized for just under 3 minutes, and were unconscious for about 5. They had to sedate you once you woke up because you were panicking and wouldn’t stop moving.”
The way he says it is so clinical and it’s hard for Dennis to register he is talking about him. It’s the same way he explains cases to him when he’s the one treating them. He looks at him and furrows his brows while he tries to work it all out. The sedatives are not helping. He is still trying to make sense of it when Robby comes in. He gives him an exhausted, but genuine smile.
“You’re awake.”
He takes a seat next to Abbot, both chairs have been pulled up next to the bed as if they were both already there watching him. He brings his hands up over his face and rubs over it slowly as his body starts to feel like his own again.
“Do you have a history of seizures Dennis?”
He looks away from his hands at Abbot and sighs.
“Yeah um, I guess,” he starts slowly, letting his thoughts come back, “I started having them at 16, scared the hell out of my parents and ended up in the ER for it.”
He takes a moment to breathe, chest feeling weird and heavy. Breathing and talking at the same time feel weird. Both men just watch him, letting him take his time.
“I got referred to a neurologist pretty quick and they did an MRI and head CT. Both came back negative so they did a recorded EEG.”
He pushed sweaty curls off of his forehead and groaned slightly before continuing, “said they weren’t epileptic and that I was probably faking them for attention. Which was ironic because I fucking hated the attention they were getting me.”
He laughed a little bit, cynically, “but my parents believed him. My dad um, didn’t react well when he caught me having them after that-“ He cut himself off, clearly not wanting to explain any further.
“I dealt with them on my own for a while, didn’t go unconscious very often so most of the time it was easy. I had less once I moved out, one or two every few weeks then every few months. I mentioned it when I interviewed here, but they really haven’t been bad since I was a teen so it wasn’t a big deal.”
He looked at both of them for the first time in a while. At some point he started talking to his lap and was just now looking up. Their faces are soft, and tired, and concerned, but where Robby looks sad, Abbot looks angry. Not angry at him but angry for him. He seems to notice Dennis analyzing him, and he lets up the anger, now conscious of it enough to let it go for the time being. Robby glances at him, and seems to recognize that he should speak first.
“I’m sorry kid. You know as well as we do that you are not in control of this and no one should have ever told you otherwise, he reaches out and places his hand over Dennis’s, warm and grounding like always.
Dennis exhales a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. He did know he wasn’t faking it, he went to med school, he knew about other causes of seizures. He knows there is something else going on, but he still holds on to the judgment that doctor and his family had placed on him. It scares him, frankly, really accepting this is real. Abbot brings his hand to his shoulder and starts rubbing circles into it absentmindedly. He doesn’t have the energy to think about the intimacy of any of this so he just enjoys it. They sit like that for a while, a few brief questions following about recent seizures (3 conscious in the past year) and who knows (the hospital board and Trinity, who both only know about the conscious ones since that’s all he’s had since moving out). It’s comfortable. Eventually Robby has to return to work, but Abbot insists on staying until the neurologist comes to talk to him. When he does he asks relatively the same questions Abbot and Robby did, and Dennis provides much less revealing answers. He explains that, once again, his brain scans look normal. He says it is likely Psychogenic Non-Epileptic seizures, which while not epileptic are still very real and can cause severe bodily harm if not handled properly. He explains the risk of concussion and understanding when it’s going to happen so he can get in a safe position. Dennis knows all of this already, he’s a doctor. He went to medical school and even though he doesn't specialize in neurology this is fairly basic information about the condition. He thanks him, because it seems right to do, and waits for a nurse to bring his discharge papers. He doesn’t want to think about taking the bus home after this because Trinity is still working or what actually acknowledging this means for him so he tries talking to Abbot who still insists on staying until he’s discharged. Eventually the papers come and he is free to go. Abbot walks with him, and grabs his shoulder once they get outside and he tries to walk away.
“Come on I’m driving you,” he starts pulling him towards the parking lot.
“I’m ok really Dr. Abbot. I’m just gonna catch the next bus.”
Abbot looks at him for a second, questioning.
“You really think I’m letting you go home alone on the bus after you had a seizure and were sedated for three hours?” He laughs a little bit, “you should know better than that by now kid. You’re coming to my house so I can keep an eye on you.”
Dennis looks at him, a little horrified by the proposition, “that really isn’t necessary-“
“It wasn’t a question, come on.”

The drive isn’t far. Dennis tries not to pay attention to where they’re going because being inside Abbot’s house is one thing, but knowing how to get there feels far too intimate. When they get there, Abbot insists on helping him out of the car and despite his complaints he really does need the help. His legs are still a little shaky and for a second everything gets a little fuzzy when he stands up.
“Thanks Dr. Abbot,” he says as he steadies and the hands leave him.
“Just Jack, we’re off the clock and I don’t like to bring work home.”
That makes him laugh, “ironic.”
Jack chuckles a little in response, “I suppose.”
When they get inside he has him sit at the kitchen counter and gets ready to cook.
“So,” he pauses for a minute to look at Dennis, “I am going to make dinner and we are going to eat because clearly you were lying earlier and you haven’t eaten all day-“
He cuts him off, “how would you know-“
“You had a full round of blood panels and your blood sugar was low enough to prove you haven’t eaten at least since last night.”
He opens his mouth and shuts it, knowing he can’t argue with his test results.
“Anyways, after that I’m going to take you to the guest room so you can get some rest. I’ll be asleep in my room and we are both going to keep the doors open in case you need anything.”
Dennis gives him a look with poorly hidden annoyance and he laughs.
“I don’t want to hear it. I’d rather you be annoyed and safe. And if you need anything you wake me up.”
He starts preparing the food and Dennis huffs a little in response and brings his hands to his face to rub his eyes, “sorry.”
“Don’t be. You shouldn’t be sorry for someone who’s made it very clear you have no reason to be.”
Dennis laughs a little, “it’s sound logic but that’s not really effective on someone with a guilt complex.”
Jack looks at him and considers it, weighing if he should try to argue before shifting gears a little.
“Have you been to therapy?”
It catches him a little off guard, but Jack tends to do that a lot. If he wants to ask a question he just asks.
“No, I can't afford that. My psych professor always used to tell me I had one though,” he shrugs, “I have no reason not to believe him.”
Jack laughs a little, “free diagnosis?”
He smiles back, “exactly.”
They talk a little more while Jack cooks and eventually while they’re eating. Dennis talks a little about the farm and about how he’s always sucked at cooking and Jack tells him he enjoys it but doesn’t have much time for it. It’s nothing important but it’s nice to think about something other than work and the past few hours. When they finish, Jack places their dishes in the sink, too tired to do anything about them now. He had been awake for almost 24 hours by now and it was starting to hit him. He moves to help Dennis stand up.
“Micheal will be home around 8, he’ll come to check your vitals. He’ll try to be quiet but chances are he’ll wake you up, he isn’t good at being quiet,” he laughs.
Dennis blinks at him, confused. His brain is working a few seconds slower than it should be.
“You live with Dr. Robby?”
“Yes, and he won’t want you calling him doctor either,” he laughs again.
“Is there a third bedroom?” He looks around the house, it looks pretty small.
Jack is looking at him with a shit eating grin, and it clicks.
“Oh shit!”
“Yeah,” he nods and smiles.
“You’re married?”
“Almost 11 years.”
He just stares at him, shocked. He really should have known, he’s worked with them for close to a year now. He knew they were close but hadn’t really thought much else of it. He now realized why Jack had made so much extra food.
“Oh wow I had no idea.”
“We don’t explicitly tell people. If they find out, they find out.”
He has a look of awe that Jack chuckles at as he helps him up and towards the guest room. The hand steady his back remains there just a little longer than it needs to. He disappears for a moment and returns with a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt.
“You can borrow these for tonight,” he says while handing them to him, “don’t try to argue, you need to change out of your scrubs. You can close the door to change but open it when you’re done.”
He knows he won’t win so he doesn’t try. They exchange their goodbyes and Jack leaves. Dennis peels off his scrubs, partially stuck to his body with sweat. He hasn’t thought about it for hours but now standing without his shirt on has made him realize how itchy the tape binding his chest is. He can feel it tugging at his skin, probably forming sores that he will just end up taping over again. He considers taking it off but decides against it. He really cannot handle that conversation with Jack or Robby right now. So instead he pulls the t-shirt over it decidedly ignoring the pain. He does reopen the door once he’s changed because he’s a guest in the house and maybe deep down he thinks it’s nice Jack wants to make sure he’s ok. Finally he lays down, opening his phone for the first time since his collapse to see about a hundred messages from Trinity. A whole lot of concern upon hearing he collapsed and some anger about the lack of communication (even though he was literally sedated at the time).

Dennis :I'm fine, just had one of those episodes I told you about:
Trinity :yeah i figured that out asshole. robby filled me in. get some rest:
Dennis :Did you know him and Abbot are married??:
Trinity :yeah everyone does:
Dennis :I didn’t 😡:
Trinity :that’s because you’re a fucking huckleberry🙄. now go sleep. love you:

He sets his phone down, still a little shocked. He really had no clue. For a while he just lays there thinking about it, but he is forced back to sleep by the lingering exhaustion before he can really decide how he feels about it.

Chapter 3

Summary:

Dennis hangs out with Robby

Chapter Text

Dennis is sleeping shallowly by the time he hears Robby entering the guest room. He opens his eyes slowly, blinking at him.
“Hey kid, sorry for waking you up. I’m just gonna check your blood pressure and stuff really quick,” Robby says quietly.
He sits up a little so he has better access to check whatever he needs to.
“Doctor- or um- Jack said you would.”
Robby sits down beside him on the bed, placing down a blood pressure monitor in front of him and getting ready to secure it on Dennis’s arm. He smiles at him in the same warm way he always does.
“You feeling ok?”
He presses some buttons on the monitor and it lights up, filling the armband as well.
“Yeah mostly. Kind of sore, kind of embarrassed, but generally fine,” he laughs halfheartedly.
He looks at him a little concerned, “you shouldn’t be embarrassed, you had a medical episode Dennis.”
The machine beeps and depressurizes. He ignores the way Robby using his first name makes him feel and glances at the numbers.
“Do you usually run high?”
Robby knows he has been high all day, him and Jack had been checking regularly despite the nurses checking him on schedule. It was worse earlier, but he is still mildly hypertensive.
“Yeah usually. Not that high on a good day but on a bad one yeah.”
He continues looking at the numbers seriously as he makes a small “hm” noise. He takes his temperature too and manually takes his pulse through his wrist even though the blood pressure monitor provided it. Maybe he hopes it’s a little lower than the monitor provided, but it is about the same if not even a little higher.
It’s not concerning for Dennis, he is used to his vital trending high especially on days like today. Robby seems a little more worried, but doesn’t say anything more about it.
“Ok you’re all done. You can go back to sleep now.”
Dennis, however, has been sleeping most of the day by now and is feeling slightly jittery. His brain still moves slowly like he is over exhausted but the idea of laying back down and trying to sleep makes him feel trapped. He suddenly wishes he is back in Trinity’s apartment so he can pace for a while.
“I might wait a little bit. Don’t really feel like sleeping anymore.”
He isn’t really sure why he mentions it because he isn’t expecting anything from Robby. Maybe he does just in case he comes to check on him and finds him scrolling on his phone. Either way it catches Robby’s attention.
“I’ll probably watch a movie before I go to bed. You can join me if you’d like?”
He feels nervous accepting the offer, he’s scared that anything he does may impose. But the way that Robby is looking at him does not say he is offering just to be polite. He looks like he genuinely would enjoy the company, so he agrees.
He half settles awkwardly on the corner of the couch, unsure if it’s really ok for him to be there. Robby joins him a few minutes later with leftovers from the dinner Jack made. He wonders if this is their routine, if one of them cooks and leaves enough for the other to come home to. He appreciates the idea of it, it’s comforting to think they have a dynamic that works with their opposing shifts. Robby sits in the center of the couch, closer to Dennis than he was expecting. The couch is fairly big, and when going to the corner he expected Robby to occupy the other, but he enjoys the proximity regardless. It isn’t that weird, the more he thought about it, Robby is a touchy guy especially with Dennis and even though he wasn’t touching him the lack of distance felt characteristic of him.
“What do you like to watch Whitaker?”
He thought about it for a second before shrugging, “Don’t really watch tv that much.”
Robby seems a little offended, “really? You don’t even know what you like?”
“No I mean-“ he laughs a little, “I grew up on a farm in Nebraska where we literally didn’t have a tv and I didn’t exactly have time for it during med school so I just never really got into it. Trin- or uh Santos has made me watch a bit of Grey’s Anatomy and I like that but I haven’t really watched anything else other than a few odd movies I saw in the theater when I was a kid.”
This is apparently a foreign concept to Robby and he looks at him a little shocked.
“Ok well Grey’s Anatomy is shit so you’re already off to a bad start,” he laughs, “you’ve got some catching up to do.”
Dennis laughs with him for a minute. He flips through a few classics for a bit, trying to get some kind of opinion even though he genuinely has none. Eventually he settles on The Princess Bride because decidedly Dennis likes romance based on the discussion of Grey’s Anatomy. Robby (like most average people) has seen the movie several times and determines it’s an appropriate starter. Eventually he allows himself to settle into the couch despite feeling a little out of his element. Once the movie ends he decides he likes it a lot and determines to get more suggestions from Robby because he clearly knows what he is talking about. It’s almost 11 by now and Robby decides to head to bed. Thankfully Dennis is also feeling tired again, the seizure along with actually being able to rest away from his job making that possible. Robby reminds him to wake them if he needs anything, tells him Jack and him aren’t working tomorrow (he thinks about asking if it’s because of him but decides it would make him feel too guilty if he said yes), and that he also would not be working tomorrow. With that they both say their goodnights and head to bed.

It takes a minute for things to click back in when Dennis wakes up. The bed is a lot more comfortable than his own and the light flows in differently. What is the most unsettling though is the hand on his head brushing back his curls. As he adjusts to being awake he remembers where he is, and subsequently that Jack is the one playing with his hair. His tired eyes meet Jack’s and he smiles.
“Hey mouse, Mike is making breakfast and you should probably get up.”
He blinks a little at him before sitting up and rubbing his eyes. He feels a lot more aware today, aware enough to feel a little sad when his hand leaves his head.
“Mouse?” He laughs a little at the nickname.
“Yeah I mean you’re pretty mouselike,” he gestures at his face, “just suits you.”
The endearment of it makes him feel a little sick. Even more so he is finally processing the fact that he is wearing their clothes and they smell like them. He is unaware of what belongs to who but it doesn’t really make a difference anyways. When Jack helps him up he is hyperaware of the hand on the small of his back. He probably could stand on his own which makes the gesture mean that much more and in a way he hates it. He stumbles slightly from the black edges tugging at his vision and Jack’s other hand lands on his chest. Dennis jumps at that, the idea of him feeling the soft flesh or the tape that holds him together is unbearable, and he takes notice. He looks at him with confused concern.
“You ok?”
“Um, yeah,” he takes a breath, “yeah. Sorry.”
He brushes past the apology and continues to help him to the kitchen with a hand lightly on his back. If Dennis thinks about it (which he was trying really hard not to) he might believe he is doing it because he wanted to, not for his own sake.
Robby is standing at the stove and turns his head to smile at them, warm and genuine. He sits down at the kitchen counter as per Jack’s gentle guidance.
“You sleep ok?” Robby asks him.
And god, Dennis must be fucking dead because Robby’s voice is still deep with sleep and it does something to him that he can’t really manage to think about.
“Good,” he half whispers, not trusting himself to say anything else.
He starts to play with his fingers, pulling at the skin around his nails subconsciously.
Jack and Robby start talking about something, and he takes the opportunity to look around. In his sleep drunk state he had failed to really enjoy how comfortable their house is. All the furniture is dark wood and the textiles are warm colors, and there is a large bookshelf filled partially with movies and partially with books. The light streams in through large windows and the glass backdoor which leads to a small but comfortable patio with a bench and two worn chairs. It’s well loved and carefully planned and so them. Dennis almost can’t handle it and the two of them talking and laughing comfortably in front of him is not helping. At some point he starts zoning out and he doesn’t know how long it has been but breakfast is ready by the time he comes back. He only stops because Jack’s hands are on his, prying them apart so he stops picking at the skin.
“Bad habit,” Dennis explains.
Jack chuckles, “We all have them.”
A plate is placed in front of him and Jack and Robby come to sit next to him on either side. It feels like a weird choice, considering they are married, and he really wants to be uncomfortable about it but it feels secure. He tells himself it’s because he is a guest and they want him to feel included. The food is good and the conversation is easy and he finds himself feeling more comfortable than he wants to be. He will think about it later and he will feel a sense of loss for this thing that isn’t really his to experience. His feelings about it make him feel a little suffocated but he is too involved in the situation to really think about it now.
Finally they finish eating and the conversation (something small and insignificant that feels a little more intimate than Dennis would like to admit) settles to a comfortable end and Dennis leans back a little to look between both of them.
“I really appreciate you guys letting me stay here and everything else.”
They smile at him and he realizes looking at both of them was a mistake as his heart feels too tight in his chest.
“We’ve been happy to have you,” Robby replies.
“I should probably get home.”
He is in the clear, he feels as fine as he always does at this point and staying is really just dragging it on. He decides to offer to leave before they kick him out. They exchange a serious look to each other then look back at Dennis. He feels like he’s suffocating again.
“We were hoping to keep you another day,” Robby says.
He looks at them both in confusion.
“I’m fine, really. I mean I know I shouldn’t have but I used to deal with these things on my own and I’ve never had any real issues.”
“We just want to be sure-,” Robby starts.
“I feel fine. Really and honestly.”
Jack redirects his attention with a hand gently placed on the back of his neck.
“We trust you Dennis. We know that you’re responsible and that you could handle it on your own if anything else happened,” he pauses to let his words sink in, “but we don’t want you to have to if we can help it.”
“You deserve better than that kid,” Robby adds.
Dennis sits with it for a minute. Part of him wants to demand they let him leave because the whole thing feels like way too much. The other part wants to lean into the hand behind him and pull Robby closer. He can’t decide which part is worse.
“Ok um, I guess if you really want me to.”
They both smile at him again and Robby pats his back. Both their hands stay on his for a second longer then they leave.
“Good,” Robby says, still smiling.
He’s fucked.

Chapter 4

Summary:

Dennis spends the morning with Jack and Robby.

Chapter Text

After breakfast, a calm takes over the house. Jack and Robby move to the living room and Dennis follows, unsure of if that’s ok but not knowing what else to do. Jack sits down in the armchair across from the couch and Robby and Dennis end up in similar positions to the previous night on the couch. It’s quiet in a comfortable way as Robby starts reading a worn book from the coffee table and Jack scrolls absentmindedly on his phone. Dennis pulls out his phone as well, determined to distract himself from his thoughts and failing for the most part. He scrolls through pinterest for a while, still thinking about everything.
He thinks about the subtle touching that lasts a little too long (granted he has gotten used to it with Robby but Jack is new) and the way they smile at him and how they care about him and how they genuinely seem to want him here. He really doesn’t want to think about how devastatingly hot they both are but he ends up there anyways. Jack wears an athletic shirt and shorts and the way the shirt fits him has Dennis forcing himself not to stare. Robby on the other hand is still in his pajamas in a shirt that also fits him a little too well and some old looking plaid pajama pants. What really gets to him about Robby though is his glasses. They sit low on his nose as he reads and if he trusted himself not to spill his guts he would make a joke about what an old man he is. And maybe it’s the childhood trauma but them caring about him is also devastatingly hot. It’s kind of torturous and he feels kind of bad about thinking about his two married bosses like this but he really can’t help it. He really needs a better distraction though.
“Is it ok if I shower?” He feels a little bad for breaking the comfortable silence.
“Yeah of course,” Robby smiles and starts to get up, “Here come with me I’ll get you all set up.”
He takes him down the hallway, pulling a towel from a small closet before entering his and Jack’s room.
“There’s no soap in the spare bathroom so you’ll have to use the master.”
Dennis freezes a little before continuing to follow him. He actively tries not to look around the room. He brings him in, showing him an array of different shampoo and conditioner options (Jack and him apparently have very different tastes) and says he can use any of them.
“Do you want new clothes?”
Dennis shakes his head, “I’m ok.”
He smiles, nods, and leaves, closing the bathroom door behind him.
It takes a second for Dennis to realize the situation he has gotten himself in. He’s about to get in their shower. Naked. And it’s really a stupid thing for him to be thinking about and he realizes that but the thought of being naked where the two of them have been is not helping anything. He takes a breath, trying and failing to put it out of his head before turning on the water. It heats up immediately which is a surprise to him because Trinity’s shower usually takes 10 minutes to fully heat up. It takes him a minute to actually undress and get in, convincing himself that it’s normal and nothing he should be freaking out over. He glances at the tape on his chest and, noticing how red the skin around it is, groans. He needs to take it off, he knows. He has had it on for 4 days now and usually 3 was his max. Trans tape is a lifesaver for him on his long shifts, allowing him not to hurt his ribs or lungs like binding caused, but it still has some major downsides. The blisters and raw skin was the worst, especially when he needed to tape back over them immediately so he could work without any awkward interactions. Taking it off after a few days reduced the risk of it blistering, but he really couldn’t do that now.
After contemplating again a little longer than he should have, he gets in. Just like everything else in their home the shower is a hundred times better than at Trin’s house. The water pressure is amazing and he knows if he were to stay in for more than 10 minutes it would stay hot unlike in the apartment. There is also a built-in chair (he assumes it’s for Jack) which stops him from getting dizzy from standing too long (another long standing symptom he has been dismissed for). He looks over the bottles of shampoo and conditioner and considers which option won’t kill him. The idea of smelling any more like either of them besides the clothes is a little nauseating. He ends up using Jack’s shampoo and Robby’s conditioner, trying to mix the different smells enough that he doesn’t register as either of them. It fails miserably and makes him smell uniquely like them in the same way their clothes do. He skips on bodywash, opting just to shower again whenever he gets home because he really can’t handle that.
He feels like an absolute pervert thinking about anything as he showers so he gets out as fast as possible. Honestly the whole thing makes him feel perverted. His bosses offered (more like demanded) to let him stay with them so they could make sure he was ok after his seizure and here he is thinking about fucking them in their shower. He really does feel bad about it and he feels equally bad for the part that wants to curl up on the couch with them and kiss them. The whole thing just feels wrong.
When he gets out and dressed he hesitates leaving the bathroom. Despite previously trying not to gather anything about their room, this time he takes it in. It’s just as warm and comfortable as the rest of the house. On either side of the bed there is a bedside table, each personal to each of the men. On the left side, there are a few items neatly set on top of it. There are also forearm crutches leaning against the wall beside the table, a clear indicator that it is Jack’s side if the neatness didn’t tip him off. On the other side of the bed there are more items, in more disarray. He leaves, willing himself not to look at anything else. Knowing which side of the bed is each of theirs already feels too personal.
When he enters the hallway Jack is standing at the end of it smiling at him. It makes him feel guiltier for his thoughts.
“Hey mouse, we're gonna go for a walk. Do you want to come?”
He thinks about it for a minute, ultimately deciding it would be impolite to refuse.
“Yeah sure.”
He smiles a little bigger at him, “great.”

Fresh air is a much needed reset. Dennis can breathe a little better as soon as he is not in the house and despite them being next to him he manages not to obsess over Jack and Robby for a few minutes. The weather is nice, the sun is out but there’s a nice breeze and he feels calmer. He walks beside Jack with Robby on Jack’s other side. He notices Jack reaching for Robby’s hand and Robby seems to tense a little, glancing at Dennis nervously. Jack just rolls his eyes and grabs his hand anyways. Dennis hadn’t really noticed a lack of touch between them until now. He remembers vaguely in his zoned out state this morning seeing Jack wrap an arm around Robby’s back and try to kiss him, but he dodged it. Dennis felt a little bad about it because it definitely seemed like he was worried about him seeing them. He really wouldn’t care, or, not in the sense of them actually doing it. He probably would care a lot, just not in the way that Robby worries he would.
The three walk together and at some point they start talking about exercise. Jack explains that he likes to exercise early in the morning after his shift which honestly sounds horrible to Dennis. It is pretty obvious that the man is active, Dennis thinks about how nice his body looks for his age and feels guilty again. Robby isn’t a big workout person, but he gets his fair share of cardio in the hospital and he and Jack take a lot of walks like this on their days off. It surprises him a little that Robby doesn’t work out because he also looks great for his age and the muscles in his arms are toned. Dennis tells them he doesn’t really have the time, energy, or money to go to the gym but says he works out from home when he feels well enough. Nothing too complicated, mostly arm workouts in the hopes of passing better. He doesn’t mention that he works out less so for himself, but to pass better for society. There’s a chance they know he’s trans but he isn’t 100% sure and if they don’t know he would rather they don’t. The conversation evolves into talking about what they do outside of work and Dennis finds out Jack is very active on tiktok.
“It’s ridiculous. He shouldn’t even have the app at his age,” Robby says lightheartedly. He bumps Jack’s shoulder when he does.
It’s a nice conversation, they’re all laughing and talking and for a while Dennis just enjoys it. When they get back to the house Robby suggests they watch a movie (which Dennis has discovered he watches a lot of) and they agree. Robby starts teasing Dennis for his lack of movie literacy and when Jack joins in it feels fond and natural.
Dennis takes up his corner of the couch again and this time Jack joins him and Robby, sitting between them. Then they start the discussion of what to watch.
“Let’s show him Brokeback Mountain,” Jack offers jokingly.
“Let’s not,” Robby laughs.
He thinks he recognizes the name from tiktok but doesn’t know it well enough to know why they’re joking about showing it to him. He decides to look it up later.
It takes them a while to come up with a conclusion. Jack has very different opinions than Robby, and Dennis enjoys watching them argue playfully about it. They end up watching Jaws in favor of starting him on classics. It's very different from The Princess Bride, but he still really is enjoying it. Robby talks a bit about different filming and shot techniques and he nods along but he really doesn’t understand how it makes much of a difference. However Robby seems happy talking about it so he lets him. He doesn’t really realize it happens but he ends up a little closer to the two of them. Jack leans back slightly on Robby and Robby has his arm around his shoulder. Dennis honestly thinks it’s really sweet. Jack’s arm is laying across the top of the couch close to him, and when he leans back further into the couch Jack starts playing with his hair. It’s grounding and comfortable and he honestly is enjoying it too much to worry about it.
The movie ends and they talk about it for a bit before all slipping into their own activities. They stay on the couch together, unmoving except settling further. Robby reads and Dennis and Jack scroll on their phones. Time passes quickly and easily and eventually Robby gets up to start dinner, insisting they both stay there. Jack adjusts himself to the loss, moving a little closer to Dennis with his hand still behind his head. They scroll together like that for a bit, and at some point Jack has migrated even closer so his arm rests fully over his shoulders. He did it so slowly, so unnoticeably that he didn't even think about it. He doesn’t even think about it when he leans into his side a little and when Jack tilts his phone to show him a tiktok Dennis rests his head on his shoulder. Neither of them really acknowledge it and that is the best part of it, it’s just natural. Robby smiles at them when he comes to tell them dinner is ready and everything just feels so calm. They eat and have easy conversations, and eventually move back to the couch to do their own things. For once Dennis feels relaxed. He knows he will probably overthink it later but for now he just feels happy. The evening passes by quickly and soon they decide to go to bed.

Chapter 5

Summary:

Dennis and Robby go back to work

Chapter Text

It turns out to be a good thing Dennis isn’t home because he forgot to turn his alarm back on after turning it off the day before. He wakes up to Robby’s hand gently on his shoulder at 6am.
“Back to work,” Robby says.
The first thing he sees when he wakes up is his smile and he has half a mind to kiss him until he realizes he can’t do that.
His borrowed scrubs have been washed and placed at the foot of his bed and Robby has supplied one of his sweatshirts because it’s colder out today. He tells him he can return it whenever he comes over again, and the way he says it makes it clear he wants him to come over again. He almost doesn’t wear it but it’s cold outside and the hospital AC is always blasting so he puts it on anyways. When he comes out to the kitchen there is a cup of coffee waiting for him and Robby is looking through the pantry. He tosses him a granola bar and grabs one for himself. Dennis looks at it for a minute and makes a face.
“Looks healthy.”
Robby laughs, “Jack’s choice. You get used to it.”
They sit in comfortable silence while drinking their coffee and eating until it’s time to go. It takes a minute for Dennis to remember Robby drives a motorcycle and when they go in the garage he’s a little surprised it’s there.
“You ever ridden one before?”
He shakes his head.
“People either love it or hate it usually. Jack hates it, he's been trying to get me a regular car for ages.”
They laugh together then Robby hands him the helmet. He looks at him, skeptical.
“I’m responsible for my own actions but if you get hurt that’s my fault,” he says, laughing again.
When Ribby gets on and gestures for him to do the same he suddenly realizes how small the bike actually is. And that he is going to spend the ride wrapped around Robby.
“I could take the bus, honestly, I don’t mind. Then you can have your helmet.”
Robby shakes his head, “It’s fine kid. And I promise this thing is perfectly safe.”
That is definitely not the problem. He was a teen in Nebraska, he’s used to dangerous modes of transportation. He’s never been on a motorcycle per say but the bike he and his friends installed a motor to was similar enough. You’ll do anything when you’re bored and the town is a 3 mile walk.
The problem is he doesn’t think his heart can handle being pressed against Robby like that for the ride. But he sucks it up and gets on because he is smiling at him and waiting patiently. He puts as much distance between them as he possibly can on the small bike and gently places his hands at Robby’s sides. It doesn’t last long as Robby pulls his arms fully around his stomach, inevitably closing the gap.
“You have to hold on tighter than that or you’ll fly off,” he says lightheartedly.
It’s a good thing he starts the bike a moment after because Dennis’ heart speeds up and in this position he would definitely feel it. He could probably still feel it, but he tries not to think about that.
The drive to the hospital isn’t long, maybe 10 minutes. His mission not to know where they live already crumbled when they took their walk yesterday, so he lets himself look around. He really enjoys the feel of the motorcycle, and it really does remind him of the bike from when he was a teen. The fact that he is clinging onto Robby is also pleasant when he doesn’t think about it too hard. He’s warm and steady and Dennis wishes he could have this more often. When they pull into the parking lot and get off the bike Robby smiles at him expectantly.
“That was really fun actually,” he smiles back at him widely.
“Thought you might like it,” his smile goes a little fonder.
Fortunately he doesn’t have the time to think about it too much as he enters the busy ED.
The day goes by fast like most days in the pitt, and fortunately there aren’t any major accidents. Robby makes him eat something a few hours into his shift and Trinity scolds him for not telling her he was feeling off the other day. Everyone else tells him they’re glad he’s back. It’s easy even though he’s constantly moving. Lot’s of small tasks and before he knows it it’s time for handover. Jack finds him specifically for handover. After they finish handover he pulls him aside with a hand on his shoulder.
“We really enjoyed having you,” he smiles at him genuinely, “and we both agree we would like to hang out with you again outside of work.”
He smiles back, shyly, “yeah I’d like that.”
“Great! You have Robby’s number right?”
“Uhh yeah. I don’t think I’ve ever used it.”
“Ok, I will have him text you my number later. Text us if you need anything. Work or personal.”
He pats his shoulder, then moves into the chaos of the pitt, leaving Dennis a mess. He shakes it off, clocks out, and meets Trinity outside to return to his normal life.

Chapter 6

Summary:

Dennis has a movie night with Jack and Robby. Things go a little crazy.

Chapter Text

The next week and a half goes by fast. Dennis spends most of his time working and sleeping like always. The time in between he thinks a lot about his time with Jack and Robby and what it means to him.
He knows he’s attracted to them both, he has known that for a while. He felt it for Robby first with the constant touching, thinking about how his hands would feel all over him. It took a little longer with Jack, but mostly because he hadn’t worked with him that much. Once he was rotating between night and day shifts every few weeks he thought about him much more. The physical attraction, while annoying, isn’t the worst of it for him. It’s the emotional attraction. He really hadn’t processed that until he was staying at their house, and that made it so much worse. They really seemed to care about him in a way he hasn’t experienced before, and that mixed with the natural physical intimacy has him spiraling out of control. He also has no escape from it, he sees them constantly at work and they’ve been texting him somewhat regularly to check in. He knows they’re just being nice or that they’re worried as his bosses or even that they’re worried as his friends. It really makes no difference to him, it just makes him want them more. He feels awful about it because they really are being good friends and it’s fucked up for him to want what he wants especially because they’re married to eachother. He’s gone over the whole thing in his head hundreds of times by now and he feels worse each time.
Dennis has the weekend off and he plans to take the time to distance and distract himself from Jack and Robby so maybe he can start to get over them. His plans are interrupted by a text from Jack.

Jack :Hey, Robby and I are off this weekend. We noticed you are too and wanted to see if you would like to come over for dinner tonight so we can show you another film. We were going to order pizza. Let me know.:

He groans. He needs the distance- he is well aware- but he can’t get himself to decline. He tells himself it is because of the free food and the opportunity to see another movie.

Dennis :Yeah sure I'd love to :) :
Jack :Great! Come over around 6, unless you need a ride?:
Dennis :No! I’ll take the bus:
Jack :Alright see you then.:

Then he sends their address and Dennis really knows where they live rather than just the part of the city. It isn’t far from him, and he decides to walk instead of taking the bus as it will only take about 15 minutes and he doesn’t feel like figuring out the bus schedule right now.
He gives himself two hours to get ready. He showers until it’s fully cold (which only takes about 30 minutes because of the shitty water heater) and stalls when getting dressed. Usually on the weekends we would let his skin rest but he refuses not to tape his chest around anyone from work (except Trinity of course). It hurts kind of a lot actually, and has all week after going 5 days without replacing it and replacing it immediately after. He does it anyway because he has no other choice. When he goes to leave, Trin makes fun of him thoroughly, knowing about his feelings for the attendings. He just rolls his eyes at her and leaves.
Dennis made sure to bring Robby’s sweatshirt as requested but he honestly forgot to wear one of his own and ends up putting it on a few minutes into his walk. He will just take it off before coming inside and give it back. He’s worn it an embarrassing amount since it was given to him. Only that one day to the hospital but every night at home since then. This is another thing that Trinity has been making fun of him for.
He spends his walk picking at his fingers and wondering anxiously what it’ll be like. If it’ll be the same as when he was there last week or different now that they’re not “caring” for him. As much as he enjoyed it, he doesn’t think he will be able to handle it again. At least not without trying to kiss them.
He makes it to their house and, inevitably, forgets to take off the jacket before Jack lets him inside.
“Nice jacket,” Robby says, smiling at him.
“Oh shit. Sorry I totally forgot to bring my own and I was carrying it and it got cold and-“
Robby cuts him off and stops him from taking it off.
“Hang on to it a little longer. You’ll need it when you go home tonight. You can return it some other time.”
“Are you sure? I’ll be fine tonight-“
“Yeah,” he pauses, “looks good on you kid.”
“It does,” Jack pipes in.
“Uh thanks,” he says, blushing.
He tries not to think about it as they settle into the couch. The pizza is already there, sitting on the coffee table so he occupies himself with a slice. He sits in the corner again, but when Jack comes over he asks him to scoot over.
“Don’t you guys want to sit next to each other?"
“Nah we’re always together, you sit in the middle.”
He looks at Robby on the other side of the couch to make sure this is ok and he smiles and gestures for him to move over. So he does because he doesn’t feel like he has much choice and honestly he really does want to be between them. So much for distance.
They start the movie (Jack and Robby already having decided on Vertigo before his arrival) and enjoying their pizza. After they’re done eating, about half an hour in, Jack shifts his body weight towards Dennis. He places his arm around him slightly, close enough that it touches the back of his neck, and starts playing with Robby’s hair like he did to him the week before. It’s warm and comfortable and again Dennis feels like it’s way more intimate than it should be. And as if that’s not bad enough Robby leans in as well so they’re pressed against both his sides.
Honestly he isn’t really paying attention to the movie. He’s too focused on not moving to think about anything else and he’s starting to feel a little dizzy. At some point his breathing gets unsteady and of course both of them feel it because he’s basically sandwiched between them.
Jack leans close to his ear and quietly asks, “you ok mouse?”
And that’s the breaking point. He thinks he’s definitely drunk on the attention because he is barely thinking when he turns his head and kisses Jack. And Jack just… lets him.
It’s probably two seconds, not even a proper kiss, just a peck and when he pulls back he is horrified by what he’s just done and his face clearly shows it. In the side of his vision he can see Robby and he’s just staring with his mouth half hanging open.
“Fuck I’m so fucking sorry.”
He’s crying a little when he says it and he is desperately trying to free himself from their warm bodies and get off the couch when Robby’s hand is gently placed on his chest so he sits down again. They’ve both shifted themselves, no longer close and comfortable, so they are angled towards Dennis and it makes him feel so sick. They exchange a glance that he can’t read then start to talk.
“So obviously it’s time to talk about this,” Jack says.
This. He wonders what he means by this. As if there’s something unspoken and real happening which Dennis has been thinking about all week but refused to believe it was real. Robby laughs.
“We probably should have talked about it before you started cuddling up to him.”
“Like you weren’t too,” Jack defends.
“I wasn’t talking to him an inch from his face.”
It’s all extremely light hearted and would be cute in any other situation but Dennis is genuinely freaking out. His breathing has gone from shaky to ragged and he is crying more now. Robby pauses the tv and both men turn their attention to him.
“Hey kid, breathe. We aren’t mad at you,” Robby places his hand on the side of Dennis’s head, “we um, we’ve been needing to talk about this.”
He looks between them, “I’m so sorry. Seriously, I shouldn’t have… fuck,” he chokes out a sob.
He closes his eyes, he can’t handle looking at them anymore.
“Dennis, look at me,” Jack says while placing a hand on his shoulder.
He meets his eyes and realizes he doesn’t look angry. His look is soft and kind.
“Mouse,” he takes a breath, “we want this. We want you, and I’m sorry that we didn’t communicate this sooner. But I promise this is something we want.”
When he realizes mouth is kind of hanging open he’s quick to shut it. He looks at Robby to confirm. He smiles at him softly.
“We want you,” he confirms.
“Fuck um, ok,” Dennis breathes out, “this is real?”
Jack and Robby laugh a little, in a soft way. Robby leans in, cradling Dennis’s chin.
“You need some more proof?”
He makes eye contact and the look in Robby’s eyes is so soft and genuine. He nods.
When Robby kisses him it’s just as soft and genuine, and it’s definitely the best kiss he’s ever had. Granted his kisses have been limited teenage flings and sloppy hookups but this is definitely a good kiss. The way he holds his face when he kisses him makes it that much better. They pull away after a while and Jack is clearly jealous. They laugh at him.
“That was nothing like the one I got,” he frowns.
Dennis looks at him and smiles.
“Do you want to try again? I won’t freak out this time.”
The three of them chuckle and within seconds Jack is pulling him into a kiss by his waist. It’s harder and needier and Dennis can’t decide which he prefers. It makes him happy that he doesn’t have to choose. It lasts a little longer than the kiss with Robby and Jack gets in his space much more than Robby did. Dennis looks and feels like a mess when it’s over.
“So,” Robby starts, “we will talk more about this in the morning but we should probably get some rest now. Unless you’d like to finish the movie Dennis?”
Dennis laughs, “I honestly don’t know what’s going on at all at this point.”
“Yeah you didn’t seem very focused on it,” Jack says smugly.
Dennis retorts playfully, “and whose fault is that, asshole?”
He puts on a face of fake shock, “I can’t believe you would say that to me.”
Robby laughs, “He’s right.”
The three laugh, then start untangling themselves to head to bed. Dennis moves down the hall towards the guest room until Jack redirects him with a hand on the back of his neck. He wasn’t expecting it, but it’s a welcome surprise. They have him sleep between them, working out how they best fit together on the bed. Dennis ends up with his head on Jack’s chest and Robby wrapped around his back. It’s so warm and comfortable and now he can fully enjoy it. He slips off to sleep listening to Jack’s heartbeat and Robby’s breathing.

Chapter 7

Summary:

They talk about their relationship

Chapter Text

There’s an empty space in front of Dennis when he wakes up, but Robby still clings to his back. He turns in his arms to look at him, only to find that he’s already awake. Robby smiles at him, and he smiles back something soft and vulnerable.
“Morning,” he says.
“Morning sweetheart,” Robby responds.
His voice is still rough with sleep and Dennis just about dies on the spot. He buries his face in his chest and groans.
“Don’t call me that when you sound like that.”
Robby laughs, placing his hand on top of Dennis’s head to get him to look up at him. He kisses his forehead gently and he loves the way his beard feels on his skin.
“Jack got up to make breakfast,” he says with his lips still against his head.
“You didn’t have to stay with me,” Dennis says while putting a hand over his waist.
He hums, “didn’t want you to wake up alone.”
There’s a part of Dennis that wants to back away, to cower away from the attention because there’s no way he deserves it. He pulls himself closer instead.
They stay like that for a few minutes, just enjoying the warmth of each other and the light of the morning. Then they move to get up,untangling themselves and Dennis feeling cold at the loss.
They walk towards the kitchen and Jack turns to smile at them from the stove.
“Can I help?” Dennis offers.
Jack gives him a playful glare, “no you can sit and look pretty.”
The three of them laugh and after Jack scolds Robby for also trying to help they both sit down at the counter.
“Should we talk now?” Dennis asks.
“After breakfast,” Jack says, placing coffee in front of Dennis and Robby.
Dennis holds the cup, the heat a welcome distraction from the anxiety building in his stomach. He isn’t sure why he feels so nervous. He already knows they want him, they made that clear the night before and they clearly haven’t changed their minds, but he can’t shake it. He shakes his leg nervously while he watches Jack cook. By the time his plate is placed in front of him he almost feels too nauseous to eat, but he does anyway. They keep an easy conversation going until all three of them have finished. Robby takes the last sip on his coffee and glances at Jack who nods slightly.
“So,” Robby starts, “we should talk about this.”
“Ok,” Dennis replies, cautiously.
He feels Jack’s heavy hand on his leg, steadying him.
“Calm down,” he laughs a little, “you’re not in trouble.”
Robby places a hand on his shoulder.
“We like you kid, we really do. And we want something with you if you want it, but we have to do it right,” he pauses and sighs, “we’re your superiors, and a hell of a lot older than you. We just need to make sure you really want this and that the power dynamic has nothing to do with it.”
Dennis nods slowly, “so what exactly does that mean?”
“Clear boundaries, obviously this stays out of work. It can’t hurt any of our careers,” Robby responds.
Jack squeezes his leg, “Robby’s a lot more worried about it than I am. I mean he’s right but I think he’s overthinking it more than he should be.”
Dennis doesn’t speak yet, just listening and nodding for now.
Jack meets his eyes, “you’re gonna need to say something Dennis.”
He lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding, trying to calm himself down before speaking.
“I really do like you guys,” it comes out shakier than he wants, “and I understand the risks and obviously I know we need to keep work separate. But I really like you guys.”
Jack smiles, and when he looks at Robby he is smiling as well in a more nervous way.
“Ok,” Robby says, “thank you Dennis.”
The way he says his name makes his heart squeeze. He nods.
“So um,” Dennis pauses, trying to figure out how to ask what he wants to ask. “You guys said you wanted something, does that mean like, just sex? Or like, an actual relationship?”
Jack laughs softly, “sweetheart does it seem like we just want you for sex?”
Dennis’s nerves settle a little and he chuckles. “No I guess not.”
“I mean if that’s all you want," Robby offers.
“No,” Dennis says back immediately.
Robby and Jack laugh.
“So how do you feel about having two old men as boyfriends?” Jack says with a smirk.
He leans back and crosses his arms over his chest, looking them both over jokingly.
“Yeah I guess that works.”
They all laugh, enjoying each other’s company and feeling comfortable together. Dennis still feels anxious though, knowing what he needs to mention next.
“But um, there’s something I need to mention.”
They look at him, soft but serious. Their hands remain on his leg and shoulder, both giving him a little squeeze to ease him.
“I am um,” he pauses, trying to catch his breath because his chest suddenly feels tight, “I’m trans. And I know I probably should have mentioned it sooner and you might already know and I totally understand if it’s a deal breaker I just- fuck.”
He’s crying now, just a little. He wipes his eyes. He really isn’t used to talking about this. The men beside him are quick to comfort him. Robby comes closer, wrapping his arm around his shoulder and Jack holds his hand instead. Robby starts speaking softly.
“Sweetheart we know,” he waits until Dennis meets his eyes to continue. “We found out when you had your seizure, it’s in your files.”
“Oh,” Dennis breathes out.
“We don’t care, ok?” Jack says, kissing his temple, “breathe.”
He sits silently for a minute, breathing and soaking in the acceptance.
“Fuck, ok,” he laughs cynically, “sorry I’ve never had this conversation go well before.”
They give him a shared look of concern.
“I mean Trin knows, she found out pretty quick when we started living together because I don’t have any surgeries or anything. We just didn’t really have a conversation about it.”
Robby nods sympathetically.
“Have you been transitioning long?” Jack asks, “Only if you’re comfortable answering.”
“Uh yeah. I mean I came out right before moving out, I was already getting kicked out for going to med school so I figured it was the best time. I was 19 at the time, started testosterone when I was 21. I’m happy with the changes.”
He feels weird talking about it so openly. He’s never really had the opportunity. He and Trinity have talked about some of the side effects but it’s never been as direct as this. Robby is looking at him, concerned.
“You aren’t binding at work right?”
Dennis shakes his head, “not traditionally. That would kill my ribs. I use KT tape.”
He looks even more concerned, “wrapped around your chest?”
Jack chuckles, “obviously not if he’s worried about his ribs.”
Dennis chuckles as well, “yeah no that would be worse. No, it just goes over the breast tissue and like pulls it to the side.”
Robby looks relieved at the explanation. Dennis smiles, he feels a little sad in a way he can’t explain but it makes him happy that they care. He feels more comfortable talking to them about it than he has with anyone else.
The conversation ends calmly and Robby kisses Dennis and Jack’s foreheads before leaving to do the dishes, denying Dennis’s offer to help. Jack brings Dennis to the couch and redirects him when he tries to occupy the corner, pulling him to lay on top of him. They both go on their phones in happy silence.

A few hours after their conversation they’re all settled on the couch, Jack and Dennis still scrolling through their phones and Robby reading. Dennis has learned Jack is very obsessed with tiktok, and after getting Dennis’s account has been sending him videos whenever he gets the chance. Jack probably uses it more than he does. He thinks it’s cute.
“It’s an easy way to unwind,” he says to justify it.
“Jack, honey, you’re a doctor you know it isn’t healthy to be on your phone that much,” Robby says.
Jack glares at him. “Well I let you keep the motorcycle so you’re gonna have to deal with it.”
Dennis giggles. He enjoys them like this, so calm and unaffected by their usual worries at the hospital. He wishes he could keep them like this all the time.
A few minutes later their silence is broken by Dennis’s phone ringing.
“Shit it’s Trin. I didn’t tell her I was staying last night so I’m in trouble,” he says, pulling himself away from Jack’s warm body. “I’ll be right back.”
He goes to the guest room to take the call, bracing himself when he answers.
“Dude where the fuck are you?”
“It got late so I just stayed here last night. They didn’t mind,” he says cautiously.
She groans, “so you’re just having sleepovers at our attendings’ house now? That’s normal?”
“It’s not like that Trinity-“ she cuts him off.
“Whatever it is, I don't think it’s good for your career.”
He sighs, “We can talk about it when I get home, ok? I’ll be leaving in a few hours.”
“Dude fuck no come home now. We need to talk about this,” she says before hanging up.
He groans and rubs his face. He doesn’t really want to deal with her right now. He knows she’s just concerned and she definitely has a right to be but he wants to stay in his happy bubble for a while and not think about the possible consequences. Still, he decides to go home because she sounds angry and she’ll make him walk to work tomorrow if he doesn’t come home now. He reenters the living room looking annoyed.
“I’ve gotta go, she’s pissed at me,” he laughs halfheartedly.
Jack starts grumbling and Robby laughs at him.
“Alright kid you better go deal with that,” Robby says, “do you need a ride?”
“No, if she sees you guys dropping me off it’ll just piss her off more. She’s convinced you guys are into me or something,” he laughs.
Robby laughs with him, “that would be crazy.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Robby says, coming over to kiss him.
Dennis smiles and kisses him back. He meets Jack on the couch so he doesn’t have to bother trying to stand up (he took his prosthetic off a while ago, knowing they wouldn’t be doing much today).
“Bye mouse,” he says before kissing him.
“Bye,” he says after they kiss, and leaves.
It’s a good thing he decided to walk because he’s pretty annoyed at the start. He was enjoying his time with his boyfriends (boyfriends!!!) and having it cut short pisses him off. He takes the walk to calm down, knowing coming at Trinity angry doesn’t get him anywhere. She’s waiting for him on the couch when he gets home, glaring at him when he comes in.
“Talk,” is all she says.
Dennis groans, “We were watching the movie and it got late and they offered to let me stay in the guest room again and so I did because I didn’t want to walk home in the dark.”
“Bullshit.”
He stares at her, and she stares back. Of course she knows. Despite how they argue she’s his best friend and she knows everything about him. He takes a deep breath.
“I kissed Jack.”
Her mouth drops open.
“And then I freaked out and tried to get out but they made me stay and they said they wanted me too and Robby kissed me too.”
Trin is still silent.
“And I know you’re probably pissed and think it’s a horrible idea but I like them, Trin, like a lot. And I know the dynamic is kind of fucked and they’re a lot older but we talked about it, had a real conversation about it and how it stays entirely out of our careers and I trust them.”
He’s a little out of breath when he finishes, and Trinity is still just staring at him.
“Holy shit,” she says.
He laughs a little, “yeah.”
He flops down heavily on the couch beside her.
“That was NOT what I was expecting.”
“Me neither,” he laughs again.
“Fuck man you’re a slut.”
They both start laughing. Trinity gets closer to him and leans into his side.
“I’m happy for you I guess. I was getting sick of listening to you thirst over them, and a little worried your dick was gonna fall off from how horny you were.”
“Oh my god my dick is still gonna fall off, waking up next to Robby this morning made it so much worse and the way Jack kisses is fucking filthy,” he groans and puts his head and his hands.
She laughs, definitely at him but not in a mean way.
“I don’t need to know that shit,” she says, still laughing.
He laughs with her for a minute.
“Ok but seriously dude,” she looks at him seriously, “don’t fuck up your job for this. And I’ll kick both their asses if they hurt you.”
Dennis laughs at the last bit and nods. “Yeah I know.”
They order Chinese food and watch Grey’s anatomy. They spend the rest of the evening together because (despite what Trinity tells everyone) they enjoy each other’s company.

Chapter 8

Summary:

Dennis has a boring day in the ED, but he feels a little off…

Chapter Text

The next morning is slow in the ED. Dennis finds himself spacing out a lot and bothering Trin when they both have nothing to do. Robby has a meeting at 9, and will likely be in it for hours. The job isn’t usually boring, but today it is. You never want to say that in the ED though. There are a lot of superstitions around that and if you’re having a slow day you really should just take a break from the chaos and enjoy it.
Dennis isn’t enjoying it though. He feels restless and anxious and maybe a little needy. He really doesn’t feel like he got enough time to hangout with Jack and Robby after their conversation thanks to Trinity, so he’s taking it out on her by bothering her. She isn’t doing anything important anyways, just messing with some charts and occasionally doing odd tasks on patients.
“Dude stop following me like a lost puppy,” she says to him after he follows her into a storage room.
“I don’t have anything better to do,” he says incredulously.
She rolls her eyes, “we’re in a hospital, there’s always something better to do.”
He knows she’s right, but the idea of finding some miniscule task to fill his time sounds so boring so he keeps following her.
Eventually a few cases build up, just small ones, but Dennis is immediately on it. A kid who needs stitches, a middle aged man with chest pain, a woman whose ng tube fell out, the types of cases that would usually be considered boring. Even on busy days Dennis didn’t mind the “boring” cases. He has done a lot of his best work on those types of cases. He’s thorough about them, and often finds things others tend to miss. Today though they’re simply average. He’s gone through all the cases he can by noon, and he is just getting more restless. He’s getting a little shaky and his anxiety is spiking despite the calm of the ED, so he decides to take a break and eat lunch.
He gets a sandwich from the hospital vending machine and takes it to the breakroom. He hopes there is no one else there and luckily there isn’t. He needs some time away from people.
He tries to finish his sandwich but when he gets about halfway through it he feels like he’s going to throw up. His heart is pounding and everything just feels wrong. He thinks it’s a panic attack, and thinks the extreme urge he has to cry confirms that. Dennis isn’t really sure what he’s panicking about but it must be something. He locks himself in a singular staff bathroom because he doesn’t want anyone to see him. Then he remembers times when he was a teen.
He used to get randomly depressed in minutes, regardless of what he was doing. He would be with his friends happy one minute and an inconsolable mess the next. It got so bad he dealt with extreme suicidal thoughts. And then he seized.
Every time he would have these horrible and unexplainable panic episodes he would have a seizure, and that is what is happening now.
He tries really hard to push the thought back, telling himself he’s just stressed because of work. It doesn’t work. His heart rate remains high and he is crying for honestly no reason.
He glances at the clock, and realizes Robby is still probably in his meeting and he knows he can’t bother him with this right now. He thinks about paging someone, but really letting anyone see him like this scares the shit out of him. He considers calling Jack, knowing he will be more upset if he doesn’t tell anyone than if he bothers him. But he just can’t. Everything in his brain pushes against his instincts, telling him he isn’t worth anything and that it would be better if he died this way.
Dennis does his best to get himself comfortable, laying down on his side on the ground. At any other time he would find it disgusting but his thoughts are falling away from him by the second. Then the shaking starts.
It’s fortunate that he is conscious for this one, since he’s alone, but that also makes it a lot more painful. The way his whole body tenses and shakes will leave him sore for hours regardless but being awake when it’s actually happening is miserable. He can’t actually move or do anything while it happens, but he is still crying.
Finally it stops after about 40 seconds. The ones he’s conscious for always seem to be a lot shorter, but feel a lot longer. He lies on the ground for another minute, gathering himself before sitting up. He’s dizzy and foggy and his heart is still pumping too hard but he needs to get up. He stands, steadying himself on the sink so he doesn’t fall back down. He splashes cold water in his face, trying to get the fog to clear and it works a bit. Dennis looks in the mirror and it’s clear he’s been crying. He just rubs his eyes with cool water and waits a few more minutes. He’s still technically on his break for 8 more minutes so he tries to calm down in that time.
By the time his break ends he looks normal enough not to raise concern unless someone really looks at him, which he isn’t that worried about unless he runs into Robby. He takes a few more deep breaths before leaving the bathroom, then the staffroom.

Dennis works smoothly for the next few hours, ignoring the inevitable exhaustion that comes with his seizures. There are a few more cases when his break ends for him to distract himself with and no one has seemed to notice anything off with him so it’s fine. Robby got off his meeting around 1, but fortunately Dennis was too busy running around to see him at the time.
He’s hoping he doesn’t have to face him again for a few hours, until he’s fully back to himself. Because he knows that Robby will be able to tell something is wrong. But work has picked up now so they will be occupied for a few hours.
They don’t really run into each other until about three hours later when Dennis is charting. He should be feeling better by now but he’s even more exhausted. Robby comes up behind him and he doesn’t notice until he’s talking to him.
“Hey Whitaker, how’s it going?”
He sounds happy, and Dennis knows he’s smiling before he turns around. He really doesn’t want to but he puts on his best “I’m totally fine don’t worry about me” face and looks at him.
“It’s going alright, just getting some charting done.”
He tries to sound happy and forces a smile that’s a little less than convincing. Robby sees through it instantly. He gives him a questioning look.
“You look pretty tired kid.”
It’s his subtle way of trying to get answers without pushing too hard. Dennis knows this, and brushes past it.
“I mean yeah we’re doctors we’re all tired.”
He tries to laugh and it comes out wrong and weird, kind of like he’s choking.
“Come on, let’s go take a break.”
It’s not a question, it’s an order, and Dennis thinks to ignore it but Robby’s firm hand is already on his shoulder guiding him. He takes him to the breakroom and makes him sit at one of the small staff tables, sitting across from him. He crosses his arms over his chest, just staring at Dennis.
Dennis is so exhausted, and he really wants to start crying again and just to hold on to his boyfriend but he can’t. They’re at work.
“I’m fine.”
It comes out hoarse, giving the exact opposite effect he wants it to. Robby just keeps staring seriously and every second he wants to cry a little more. His resolve fizzles out.
“Fuck ok,” he takes a shaky breath before continuing. “I was feeling really anxious out of nowhere earlier, so I took my lunch break and it just kept getting worse and I started breaking down in the bathroom and then I realized I was gonna have a seizure and I did.”
It comes out quick and uneven as his voice wavers. Several looks move across his face before frustration settles in.
“And you just weren’t going to tell me?”
He sounds angry and hurt and Dennis feels broken.
“No I- fuck-“ he has to stop to press his hands to his eyes to stop himself from crying again, “I was going to, honestly. I wanted to say something before it happened but you were in a meeting, and I thought about calling Jack or paging someone but by the time I thought of it my body wasn’t listening to me enough to do anything about it.”
He continues before Robby gets the chance to speak, “and I’m sorry because I know I should have told someone right after it happened, but I just couldn’t. I’ve been dealing with this shit by myself for years and it feels stupid to ask for help now.”
Now he’s frustrated, not at Robby but at himself. He knew he needed to ask for help and that it would upset him to find out he didn’t but he couldn’t. His face is still buried in his hands when he feels a gentle hand on his shoulder and hears Robby exhale. He looks up to find that he’s moved to sit next to him.
“I get it kid, I do. But this is dangerous, not just for you but for patients too. All the dangers to yourself aside, someone needs to check you out before you go back to treating patients because it seriously impairs your cognition.”
It’s stern, but caring and it makes him feel a little better.
He nods, “I know.”
Robby nods back. He wants to do something to comfort him, but they’re at work so he can’t kiss him and even a hug feels too unprofessional. He squeezes his shoulder instead, and it’s small but it helps.
They talk a little longer, and Robby does a quick check on Dennis to make sure he is physically ok and aware even though it’s clear enough he is. Then they roll back into their work.
By the time their shift is over Dennis feels entirely drained and his body is sluggish. He avoids handover, a little scared of Jack (he knows that Robby already contacted him) but he finds him anyway. He’s quick to pull him into a supply room without a word. Dennis braces himself for a lecture, but Jack just hugs him. It takes him a second to settle into it, but once he does he lets his full weight settle in his arms. Jack places a hand in his hair and runs his fingers through it.
“You ok mouse?”
He nods into his chest, too tired to really talk about it.
“Good,” he pulls back a little to kiss his forehead and look him in the eye. “Robby’s waiting outside for you, he’s gonna make you go home with him.”
Dennis lets out half a laugh, “pushy.”
Jack laughs back quietly, “he can be.”
Jack pulls him into a kiss before returning to work. He finds Robby waiting outside like Jack said, and welcomes the arm he places around his shoulders. He’s exhausted and drained but the closeness makes him feel a little better.

Chapter 9

Summary:

Dennis gets drunk and horny and texts his boyfriends

Chapter Text

It’s been about three weeks since the relationship started. They’ve fallen into a steady rhythm. Dennis comes over regularly on his days off to watch movies and spends the night. Sometimes after work he will crash there as well when he or his boyfriends have a bad shift. It’s nice, and comfortable, and Dennis is incredibly happy with the whole thing.
But he’s horny.
His boyfriends are hot, and he spends basically every day with at least one of them between work and him staying over and he is constantly perving over them.
It isn’t like they haven’t done anything, they’ve had some very heated makeout sessions and there’s been lots of over the clothes stuff and they’ve seen him down to his boxers but he’s getting impatient. The thing is that he knows Jack would give it to him, feels how hard he gets when they’re kissing and how needy his kisses are. It’s just that Robby is nervous, and that means none of them go any further.
And Dennis hasn’t brought it up because he’s happy and he doesn’t need sex, he just would like to know if it’s never going to happen so he can get over it. Part of him is scared it’s because he’s trans, that despite their conversation and Robby assuring him he doesn’t care that he does care. He tries not to think about that a lot.
He’s thought about bringing it up to Jack before talking to them both but honestly it feels sneaky and he really doesn’t want to cause any problems.
All this said, he’s wound up and horny and anxious and needs a distraction. Which is why he agrees to go out drinking with Trinity on their night off. Usually he would blow her off to rest but he really needs it right now.
She insists on doing his makeup (something she frequently does when they go out), and he ends up wearing a low cut black tank top and ripped jeans. Usually he wouldn’t feel comfortable going all out but they’re going to their favorite gay club and honestly he just needs to let go a little bit. Despite it being his distraction he still snaps a picture and sends it to his boyfriends to tell them he’s going out before turning his phone off.
They’re having a really good time. Trinity decides only to have a few beers but Dennis is going all out. When he was a teenager his alcohol tolerance was crazy high. Growing up in a farm town meant him and all his friends learned how to make moonshine from their grandparents and no one ever really stopped them from doing it themselves. Now however, it doesn’t take much to get him drunk. He’s got some good muscle mass but he’s still fairly lightweight and he never really drank in college because he didn’t have the money for it. He still doesn’t really have the money for it but fortunately the older gay men at the club do and are readily willing to spend it on him if he looks at them just right.
He’s probably had about 3 drinks too many and he still is thinking about Jack and Robby. So he takes out his phone because he did text him that picture and he’s curious to see what they said

Robby :Wow.:
Jack :Fuck Mouse.:

He giggles a little at it, and considers putting his phone away but texts them instead.

Dennis :i misss ypu gys:

It only takes a minute for him to get a response.

Robby :We miss you too kid. Had a bit to drink?:

He laughs as if he can actually hear him.

Dennis :a but:
:bit:
:byt i rlllyy mias you:

He thinks about it for a second, the small part of his brain that’s sober trying to fight against the words but he’s too drunk to stop himself. He focuses extra hard to spell it correctly.

Dennis :and im soooo horny:

He watches dots appear on his phone on and off for two minutes, then Jack calls him.
“Hey sweetheart are you feeling alright?”
He sounds like he finds it funny.
“Mhm! Just like,” he pauses, “reaaally miss you.”
Jack laughs, “I can tell.”
Dennis giggles.
“Do you want me to come pick you up?”
“Please,” he responds immediately.
“Ok I’ll be there in five.”
“Oook.”
He tries to find Trinity quickly but just ends up texting her that he’s getting picked up when he can’t.
The cool night air feels nice. He didn’t realize it but he was sweating a lot. It does a little to sober him up but really not enough. When Jack’s truck pulls up in front of him he smiles wide. It’s a good thing Robby comes out of the passenger door to help him up because he stumbles when he tries to take a step.
“Easy there,” Robby laughs a little and keeps him steady with hands on his back and chest.
Once he’s in the backseat and Jack has started driving he suddenly feels really dizzy again. He leans back in his seat and stares at the roof of the car.
“Did you have a good time?” Jack asks while smiling at him in the rearview mirror.
He smiles and giggles a little, “yeah.”
The drive feels really long and really short. Dennis spends most of it staring at his boyfriends in awe. When they get to the house, Jack is the one to help him in, and once there inside he turns to look at him.
“Thanks,” he smiles up at him.
He chuckles, “anytime.”
“Can I have a kiss?” Dennis asks, still staring at him.
Jack just smiles and leans down. It’s a little uncoordinated and sloppy thanks to Dennis but both of them are enjoying it. Jack ends it sooner than either of them want though. He looks at him a little annoyed.
Jack laughs, “you’re really drunk, mouse.”
He sighs, “yeah and it’s making me hornier.”
Jack takes a visibly deeper breath at that and glances at Robby, who looks just as wrecked.
“Come on let’s get you to bed,” Jack says, kissing the top of his head.
Dennis grumbles a little but ultimately goes with them to their room. When they get there he requests a t-shirt to change into and when given one he starts to change immediately. Jack and Robby have seen him change before, it’s just become easier after long shifts instead of him going to a separate room, this is different though. Dennis peels off his tank top and they see his tape which is nothing new, but when he takes off his jeans all he’s wearing is a lacy black thong. The least either of them has seen him in his boxers, and the effect is visible. Dennis doesn’t notice that they’re staring until he pulls the t-shirt on, not bothering with pants because he still feels warm from the club. He turns around to find them both sitting on the bed watching him hungrily. It makes him want them even more.
So he makes his move, he walks over to Robby and starts kissing him. He accepts it for a while, hands planted on his cheek and waist until Dennis starts tugging at his shirt. He pulls back, flushed.
“Hey Den we can’t- we can’t do this right now.”
And that pisses him off because he’s pent up as hell and drunk. He groans and lays back in bed. Jack soon joins him.
Jack looks at him, smiling softly. “Are you alright?”
“No I’m drunk and I’m horny and my boyfriends won’t fuck me.”
Jack scoffs playfully, “how horrible of us.”
Dennis huffs a little and turns his attention to Robby.
“You won’t even fuck me when I’m sober,” it comes out a little bitter, laced with the rejection he’s been feeling the past few weeks.
Robby freezes, and Jack doubles down on him.
“He’s got a point.”
Jack understands how annoyed Dennis is, he’s been feeling it too recently. They all will start to get into things then Robby gets nervous and backs out. Jack has already talked to him about it, it’s caused by the same fears he’s always had about the power dynamic. He isn’t annoyed that he’s scared of course, he’s annoyed that he won’t tell Dennis.
Robby looks between them, trapped and finally having to face the conversation he’s been avoiding. He sighs and lays down on Dennis’s right, facing him and Jack. He meets Dennis’s eyes and gets a little closer.
“It’s not because I don’t want to, because trust me, I want to.”
It’s hot and has the desired effect on Dennis.
“But we should save that for when you’ll actually remember it.”
Dennis nods a little, clearly deep in desire. Robby leans in to kiss him briefly, then leans over to Jack to kiss him a little longer just to make Dennis watch. Jack smiles at him, satisfied for now. They can talk about the rest in the morning, for now they just go to sleep curled up together and wanting.

Robby is already out of bed when Dennis wakes up. He groans as he opens his eyes, his head pounding. He hears Jack laugh behind him and he rolls over to glare at him. Jack just smiles back at him.
“Asshole,” he says as he makes himself comfortably burrowed in Jack’s neck.
He just laughs again. “Maybe you shouldn’t have drank that much.”
Dennis huffs, “I was trying to distract myself from being horny. Clearly it didn’t work.”
“So you remember everything that happened last night?”
He considers it for a moment. He remembers it vaguely, saying he misses them and them coming to get him. It takes him a second to remember basically throwing himself at them and giving Robby an attitude when he wouldn’t do anything about it. He rolls on his back and scrubs his face with his hands.
“Fuck, yeah,” he groans, embarrassed. “Is Robby mad?”
Jack chuckles, “No, and he has no right to be. He’s been nervous about the whole thing and hasn’t been communicating about it. If anyone should be upset it should be you.”
Dennis thinks about it. He knows Jack is right in theory, but he still feels kind of guilty about the whole thing and he is definitely embarrassed. He turns on his side again to face Jack.
“Sorry for kind of throwing myself at you guys.”
Jack just laughs and moves on his side to face Dennis fully.
“I’m not going to complain about that,” he rubs his hand over Dennis’s leg up to his hip and snakes a finger under the strap of his thong. “These look good by the way.”
That’s what reminds him how pent up he is. He smirks at him, new confidence at the attention fueling him.
“Thanks. I like to wear them when I go out,” he pauses, rubbing a hand gently over Jack’s chest. “Sometimes I wear them to work, just for fun.”
That seems to catch Jack’s attention as his breath hitches and he pulls him into a kiss. It’s hot and needy and Jack ends up partially on top of him, taking control of it. When they pull away their pupils are blown and full of desire.
“For the record,” Jack starts, voice deep with lust, “I would fuck you right now.”
The thought alone and the presence of Jack on top of him is enough to make him moan.
“Fuck,” Dennis says, “we need to get up now.”
Jack sighs and nods, releasing Dennis from under him. They stumble out of bed, Dennis being reminded of his headache as soon as he’s stood up.
“I’m never drinking again,” he groans.
Jack laughs.
They head to the kitchen where Robby is cooking. Dennis comes up behind him at the stove and wraps his arms around his waist. He smiles tenderly and places a hand over Dennis’s.
“Hey Den, you need some water?”
“Probably.”
He chuckles, finishing what he’s doing at the stove so he can shift towards the counter. Once he does he turns around and hugs Dennis. Dennis moves his arms to wrap around his neck and kisses him gently.
“Sorry for being pushy,” he says, looking embarrassed.
Robby chuckles again and kisses his forehead.
“Don’t be, it was hot. You were just too drunk for us to actually do anything.”
Dennis laughs a little, then gives him more of a gently serious face.
“I want to talk about sex.”
Robby nods, looking guilty.
“Me too.”
They decide to wait until after breakfast. It’s quiet but comfortable as it always is. Jack keeps his knee touching Dennis’s and it calms any anxiety he is having about the conversation. Dennis is the one to start once they’re all finished.
“So, I feel like I’ve made it embarrassingly obvious where I stand on this, and I know where Jack is at, but I’m gonna need you to start communicating better Robby because honestly it’s stressing me the fuck out.”
He looks at Robby, and he looks a little nervous to say anything, like he doesn’t trust himself to speak. Dennis reaches out and holds his hand.
“I’m not- listen, I don’t need to have sex in this relationship. I would love to, if you’re both comfortable with it, but I’m also happy where we’re at. I just,” he exhales, “kind of need to know so I can get it out of my head.”
Robby is a little shocked at how well Dennis is communicating, and a little ashamed that he hasn’t been. Dennis has clearly been thinking about this for a while, and while Robby has too he has come to a much less complete conclusion. Robby looks at Jack, who is calmly watching from the other side of the table.
“I know,” he sighs, “I want to, Dennis, I really do. I’m just… struggling.”
Dennis shrinks a little, “is it because of me or something I’m doing?”
“No, it’s more so the idea of the whole thing.”
“Because I’m trans?” Dennis almost flinches when he asks it, almost not wanting to know.
Robby is quick to reassure him.
“No, absolutely not,” he places a hand on his face, “we don’t care- I don’t care. That isn’t even close to something I’m worried about.”
Dennis settles a little at the response, but still seems to have his guard up a little.
“It’s-,” he sighs, trying to come up with the right way to describe it. “We’ve been dating, and we’ve kissed and we sleep in the same bed, and that’s already crossing a line, but this is just different.”
Dennis keeps looking at him, nodding slightly in recognition.
“I’m just still worried about how much older we are and the fact that we have this authority over you.” He finally meets his conclusion, “I just don’t want to be taking advantage of you.”
Dennis nods a little more. He understands it, he really does. He knows how hard it’s been for Robby to get past being his boss and his boyfriend and the situation makes a lot more sense now that he’s actually said it. Dennis holds the hand that Robby still has on his face.
“I get it,” he chooses his words carefully, “I get that you’re worried, but I’ve made my choice here. I know that I want you guys, and I think you’re a little too cocky if you think you have that much power over me.”
Robby raises his eyebrows a little and laughs, and so does Jack. Dennis just smiles.
“I’m pretty strong willed, you know. I went to med school and paid for that shit myself even though it got me kicked out,” he laughs. “I’m no bitch for authority.”
Robby is a little surprised by how confident he’s gotten all of a sudden, but he likes it a lot better than when he’s guarded and nervous. He smiles.
“Ok, I’ll keep that in mind,” he says and kisses Dennis.
“Ok,” Dennis responds, smiling into the kiss.
Robby and Dennis both feel a lot better after actually talking about it. It doesn’t fix everything and Robby still needs to work through it a little more but at least it’s out in the open, and they’re all hopeful that it will end well.

The boys get freaky

smut, be warned

Chapter Text

Dennis ends up staying with them for the day, and inevitably the night. It didn’t take much convincing, but he still put up a fake fight about it.
The next morning Dennis has a staring problem. It’s not like he doesn’t usually, he’s kind of obsessed with them so he stares constantly, it’s just really bad this morning. The biggest problem is Robby is wearing a shirt that’s just a little too small, so it’s tight and when he lifts his arms his stomach peaks out. It’s doing ungodly things to Dennis, and he doesn’t want to be pushy about it because he knows about Robby’s concerns but he’s going a little insane. And Jack has definitely noticed it, because it feels like everything he thinks Jack can figure out. In a way he kind of loves it but right now it isn’t fun. He smirks as he watches him stare at Robby while Robby brushes his teeth.
“You good Mouse? You look a little red.”
Dennis pries his eyes away to look at Jack and glares. “I’m fine.”
Jack moves closer to him, sitting behind him on the bed and placing his hands on his sides.
“Really? You seem a little tense,” he half whispers near his ear.
He feels his breath tickle on his neck and shivers. Jack’s hands press gentle circles into the small of his back. Dennis closes his eyes and exhales while Jack starts kissing his neck. It’s gentle at first but devolves quickly, Jack leaving teeth marks as he gets close to his shoulder. He bites particularly hard, sucking on his skin to leave a mark just far enough from his neck that his scrubs will cover it, and he groans in surprise and pleasure.
Robby hadn’t been paying attention, brushing his teeth and putting oil in his beard, but that made him look up. He sees Dennis with his eyes closed and head tilted back in pleasure. Jack’s hands are beneath his shirt holding his waist while he continues to leave marks on Dennis’s skin. He wishes he could take a picture of it. Jack looks up from Dennis’s skin at Robby and smiles.
“He’s pretty worked up, he could probably use some help,” he says playfully.
Dennis groans again, “you’re such a dick.”
Robby is quick to finish what he was doing and make his way over to them. He stands in front of Dennis looking down at him. Dennis’s pupils are blown. He places his hands on top of his thighs.
Still he’s just staring, and Dennis doesn’t feel like being patient anymore so he tugs him down by the neck and kisses him. His hands make their way down to Robby’s waist, one strong arm pushing him closer at the back and the other groping at his flesh. Jack is still buried in Dennis’s neck, being less careful than he should be when leaving marks. One of Jack’s hands moves up to rub his chest and when he presses down on his nipple through his tape he moans into Robby’s mouth. He pulls away from the kiss to breathe and places his head on Robby’s chest.
“Fuck,” he breathes out.
Robby’s hands start pulling up his shirt, waiting a second for approval. Dennis brings his head up to make eye contact with him, and makes quick work of taking it off himself. Jack and Robby both share a groan before touching all the newly exposed skin they can. He pulls Robby onto the bed, getting him and Jack to lay down with him, and kissing him again.
Jack is pressed against him and he can feel his dick hard on his back. He breaks the kiss with Robby, who moves down to kiss his neck and stomach, and turns his head to kiss Jack. It’s always a little jarring to go between kissing them so quickly because they kiss so differently but Dennis loves it. The contrast of Jack kissing him hungrily with his hands holding him tight versus Robby’s soft kisses down his chest and gentle hands is incredible.
Robby’s large hands move up and down his torso, and when he settles his thumb under the waistband of his sweatpants he moans and rolls his hips. Jack moans at the way it rubs his dick.
Robby chuckles, “eager.”
Dennis lets out a breathy laugh, “Very.”
Jack and Robby are already a little out of breath, both clearly turned on. Jack tilts his head upwards and kisses down his neck.
“Do you want Robby to touch you?” He asks between kisses.
“Fuck,” it comes out whiny, “yes.”
He turns his head back to Robby who looks just as fucked up as he does. Still, he hesitates to make any further move.
“Touch me.”
It’s an order, and it works better than anything else he could have said. Robby groans, leaning forward to suck on the exposed parts of his chest while bringing his hand to pull off Dennis’s pants. Dennis moans loud when Robby finally touches his dick over his thong. Robby and Dennis kiss and Jack bites at his neck and back. After a minute of grinding on Robby’s hand he pushes his hand away. Robby looks at him a little concerned. He rolls on his back so he can look at both of them.
“I’m feeling pretty naked comparatively,” he says, holding onto Jack and Robby’s shirts. “Can we fix that?”
They all laugh, soft and intimately, before Jack and Robby move to undress. When they’re standing to take off their pants, Jack comes over to Robby and starts kissing him. Jack’s hands roam Robby’s freshly exposed skin while Robby holds their hips together so their dicks rub against each other. They’re moaning into each other’s mouths and Dennis thinks it’s so fucking hot. In a way he just wants to watch them, but he’s in desperate need to be touched so he saves the idea for later.
They get back on the bed, now in just their boxers. Robby comes to lay next to Dennis again, but Jack decides on something else. He sits in front of Dennis’s feet, and gently pulls his legs apart so he can slide his body between them to kiss him. Jack’s hands on his legs alone makes him moan, but then their hips touch and their dicks rub together and he can’t even manage to keep kissing. Robby just watches in awe, running a hand over Jack and kissing wherever he can on Dennis. Jack and Dennis both gasp when Jack rolls his hips. He braces himself on either side of Dennis’s face so he can look at him.
“Dennis,” he says, getting him to open his eyes. Jack smiles when he does, “will you let me suck you off?”
Dennis gasps and Robby groans at the thought. Dennis is quick to nod his head.
“Please,” he breathes out.
Jack kisses him one last time, “be good and keep Robby happy while I do, ok sweetheart?”
He moans and nods his head. Jack moves down his body, kissing and biting him as he does. Meanwhile Dennis pulls Robby partially on top of him so he can kiss and grab at him. Jack’s slender fingers hook under his thong and pull it down slowly. When he’s got them off he groans, deep with desire. He grabs at the meat of his thighs and spreads his legs a little further.
“Fuck,” he takes a breath, “you’re so fucking hot Dennis.”
Jack lowers himself to mouth at his dick. He bites and sucks his thighs, leaving marks that’ll make Dennis horny every time he sees them, then he settles on his dick, applying subtle suction and rubbing it with his tongue. It’s hot. Having both of their mouths on him like this is definitely the hottest thing he’s ever experienced, and every second it goes on it just gets hotter. At some point Jack slips two fingers easily into him and starts fucking them in and out. He keeps kissing Robby, eventually slipping a hand into his boxers to jerk him off. His dick feels so heavy in his hand and thinking about it inside of him makes him jerk his hips into Jack’s mouth, which makes Jack moan. It starts a loop where every time Robby makes a noise or moves his hips, Dennis jerks up, and Jack moans, sending jolts of pleasure through Dennis’s body. After a few minutes Dennis has to push Jack away because he’s getting dangerously close and he really doesn’t want to finish before either of them are inside of him. Jack looks at him a little a little concerned until he speaks.
“Please fuck me,” he looks between both of them, not really sure who he’s asking.
Both men inhale sharply at the thought. They look at each other, trying to work out how to do this. It takes a few minutes of distracted discussion before Dennis asks Jack to fuck his face while Robby fucks him. It’s a bit of a surprise how confidently he asks for it, but they love the idea nonetheless. They move into their positions after Robby slips on a condom.
Jack sits on Dennis’s chest, his dick hard in front of his face while Robby lines himself up. Dennis squirms and tries to squeeze his thighs together before Robby holds them open.
“You ready sweetheart?” Jack asks, running his fingers through his hair.
Dennis nods and Jack just smiles a little.
“You can do better than that.” Jack’s hand grips his hair.
He groans, “fuck. Yes, yes I’m ready.”
He’s getting a little frustrated and it shows in his voice but he forgets quickly when Robby and Jack thrust into him at the same time. It makes him moan around Jack’s dick and clench around Robby. They both moan in response.
He isn’t sure how they’re doing it but every thrust is so in sync and it’s driving him crazy. Every time Robby bottoms out, Jack hits the back of his throat and he feels so pleasantly full. The noises are fucking obscene and it’s turning him on that much more listening to them. It doesn’t take long for all three of them to get close, Jack and Robby’s thrusts growing more erratic and everyone getting louder.
Dennis is sitting on the edge, pressure building in his stomach, when Robby brings his thumb down to rub his dick and that’s what tips him over. He cums loud, even with Jack’s dick muffling his sounds. His reaction is what tips both Jack and Robby over the edge. Jack cums down his throat while Robby fills the condom.
Jack pulls out first, making Dennis realize how exhausted he is. He’s breathing heavily and his eyelids droop. Jack smiles at him, still on his chest.
“Good job sweetheart.”
He smiles back tiredly. He isn’t prepared for when Robby pulls out and he groans.
“Sorry Mouse,” he rubs his thigh apologetically.
Jack rolls off of Dennis and pulls him to lay on his chest. Dennis lays heavily, trying to stay awake until Robby joins them. Thankfully he is quick to throw away the condom and wipe himself off. None of them bother to put any clothes on, knowing they’ll only nap for a little while to recharge and not wanting to bother with it before then. Robby lays down next to Jack, turning towards him and wrapping an arm over him and Dennis before kissing them both on the forehead and going to sleep.

Chapter 11

Summary:

Robby deals with some emotions after their first time and is a dick because of it. Dennis is pissed about it.

Chapter Text

Dennis wakes up from his nap to Jack playing with his hair and Robby snoring quietly. He angles himself so he can look at Jack. Jack smiles at him.
“Have you been awake long?” He asks.
Jack shakes his head, “just a few minutes.”
Dennis hums.
“Are you staying with us tonight?”
“Yeah,” he chuckles, “I don’t think Trinity will be real happy about it though.”
Jack laughs back quietly.
“I have that weird 1pm to 1am shift for the next few weeks and that starts tomorrow.”
Jack nods. Dennis doesn’t mind the shift, the hospital has the residents on weird rotations and this way he can shift to the night shift easier. He will be working this shift for two weeks, then the night shift for two, and back to the day shift after that. It’s a less abrasive shift anyways, but it goes through the peak trauma times so it tends to be busier.
Jack and Dennis chat for a while until Robby eventually wakes up and joins in. They have a calm evening after that.
Dennis wakes up around 9am the next morning alone. Robby is already working and Jack is out on a run. He feels a little odd being in the house alone still, like he maybe shouldn’t be, but he’s getting used to it.
Jack insists on driving him to work even though he should really be resting before his upcoming night shift. Jack pulls up in front of the hospital and despite the fact that he really shouldn’t he kisses him before Dennis gets out of the car.
Dennis feels calm going into work, until the pitt strikes. It’s busy, several car wreck patients are on the way and flu season is in full force. He’s heading into a trauma room to treat one of the wreck victims with Langdon when he spots Robby across the ED. Dennis gives him a tired smile, but he seemingly doesn’t notice as he’s distracted. He doesn’t think anything of it.
By 5pm he’s worked on a handful of victims, 2 of which were already gone when they got there and 1 who ended up dying after arrival. It’s a shitty day to say the least. One of his patients keeps going down no matter what he tries even though he thinks he’s doing everything right and while he tries to figure out next steps he bumps into Robby charting.
“Hey,” Dennis says.
“Hello,” he doesn’t look up from his chart.
“Do you think you could take a look at this for me? My patient in 4 keeps crashing and I’m not sure what else to do.”
Robby sighs and takes the chart. He looks it over quickly and hands it back, still not looking at Dennis.
“You’re gonna need to intubate and run some more tests,” he says quickly and a little snappy.
It’s really not helpful but Dennis nods anyway. It’s a weird interaction, but he chalks it up to Robby being busy and stressed. He talks to Dana about the case, knowing the older nurses tend to be a lot more capable than the residents at solutions, then checks in with Langdon and figures out a course of action. The patient stabilizes about half an hour after he implements his treatment and Dennis decides to take a short break because he’s tired and not working on anything at the moment.
When he enters the breakroom, Robby is there and when he notices him coming in he gets up to leave. Before he does, Dennis smiles at him.
“My patient stabilized.”
Robby nods, face flat.
“Good.”
Then he leaves. Dennis tries to reason again that he was stressed and needed to get back to work but he can’t shake the feeling that something is up. He eats an apple and goes to find Trinity who has been working with Robby all day on traumas.
“Hey, how are your patients doing?”
She gives him a questioning look, knowing that’s not what he wants to ask. He sighs.
“Has Robby been weird today?”
“Weird how exactly?”
“Like, short and kind of avoidant?”
She thinks for a minute and shrugs.
“I don’t know man, he seems pretty normal. I mean he’s stressed with how busy things are but nothing out of the ordinary.”
She narrows her eyes a little, “is he being weird with you?”
He sighs again, “I don’t know, maybe I’m overthinking it.”
She hums, “I’ll kill him if you need me to.”
He laughs, then a sad look settles on his face. Trinity notices.
“Did something happen?”
His pager goes off, he needs to get back to it.
“We’ll talk about it later,” he says, then returns to work.
Fortunately Trinity has the same shift as him currently so she will be driving him home and they can talk about it then.
About an hour later is handoff and Robby leaves before he can see him again. It’s probably a good thing, Dennis doesn’t think he can handle being ignored again tonight. He’s a little worried that Jack will be acting similarly but when he sees him he smiles and he feels relieved. He smiles back, obviously feeling a little off.
“I heard it’s been a rough one, are you doing alright?”
He nods, “just a little tired.”
He doesn’t want to mention Robby, especially if he is overthinking the whole thing and nothing is wrong, so he doesn’t. Jack seems to know something else is wrong but he doesn’t press. He asks if Dennis has eaten, and he tells him a bit which satisfies him for now.
They return to work, dealing with the loose ends from the day shift and any new patients that come in. It’s easier and goes by faster than the past 6 hours did, and it’s time for him to leave before he realizes it. Jack says goodbye to him with a squeeze of his shoulder and he meets Trinity outside to go home.
In the car he tells her about everything, him getting drunk and coming onto them, their conversation, the sex, and Robby seemingly avoiding him today. He kind of wants to cry about it but Trinity is pissed and the more she talks the more he is too. His immediate reaction is always guilt, fearing that he did something wrong, something to deserve being ignored, but now he’s angry. Because he really didn’t do anything, and the fact that Robby is avoiding him after he had to initiate the communication and he was vulnerable hurts like hell. Trinity fuels his anger by being angry with him and validates his feelings. He really appreciates that about her, if she thinks he deserves to be pissed she will join him. They stay up for a while even though they really should sleep, talking about the whole thing and being frustrated. They end up falling asleep on the couch together, exhaustion getting the best of them.
He’s still exhausted and annoyed when he wakes up around 11. His body feels heavy and he struggles to stand up, his head spinning when he does. He decides it’s just because of the long shift the day prior and moves to get ready. Dennis takes a long shower, trying to calm himself down while also trying to get his head to snap into focus. He decides it’s good enough long after the water has gone cold.
He forces a pb and j down and he and Trinity leave. The ED is less busy today, there are still a lot of people in the waiting room, but no incoming traumas. Dennis works, seeing Robby in passing. He’s fairly certain Robby is still avoiding him, so he ignores his presence. But he inevitably needs his help with something. He finds him in a mostly empty hallway, and despite his obvious attempt to dodge him he catches up.
“I’m busy,” he says.
“I just need your advice on something I-,” Robby cuts him off.
“Ask someone else,” he half snaps, then keeps walking.
Dennis stands there, shocked. Ignoring him is one thing, but getting mad at him when he needs help from him as his boss is another. He’s pissed and tired, but he doesn’t have the option to stop working now. He goes to Langdon with his question instead, trying to hide how annoyed he is. Langdon seems to notice, giving him a questioning look, but not saying anything. He works for a little while longer, sorting out his remaining patients before he takes a break.
He feels like shit. He is mentally and physically exhausted and his head is feeling foggy again. A few minutes ago he wasn’t feeling sad, but now he has the overwhelming urge to cry. That’s about when he realizes what’s about to happen. He’s about to have a seizure, and he really can’t tell Robby that right now and honestly seeing him will just make it worse.
So he calls Trinity, stuttering through an explanation while he lays himself down on the bathroom floor. She joins him within a minute, sitting on the floor with him and forcing him to put his head on her lap. As soon as they’re settled it starts.
He’s conscious at first, feeling every muscle in his body tense and shaking. It doesn’t last long, maybe 30 seconds, but a few seconds after it stops it starts again. When it ends he feels wrung out, but his eyelids still twitch and he knows it isn’t over. A second before he starts seizing again he goes unconscious.
Trinity just has to watch, keeping him on his side and holding his arms to his chest so he doesn’t hurt himself. She figures it’ll end soon, but every time he stops for a few seconds he starts right back up again. After about five minutes it sounds like he’s choking and she knows she needs to get Robby in there. She really doesn’t want to, she’s still pissed at him and knows Dennis might be mad when he wakes up but he’s still their boss and an amazing doctor so she pages him 911 along with their location.

Robby feels guilty, the guilt is eating away at him really. He knows he shouldn’t be avoiding Dennis, and that getting mad at him for asking for help was entirely uncalled for. At this point the fact that it’s his second day avoiding him just makes him avoid him more, feeling too guilty to face him. He is thinking about it and charting when he gets the page from Santos. When he sees the location he immediately knows it’s Dennis. He gets up quickly, his pager falling to the ground, and rushes towards the breakroom.
When he enters the bathroom it looks bad. Dennis’s unconscious body shakes and convulses and his mouth hangs open gasping for breath. Spit runs down his cheek and onto Santos’s pants and she looks like she’s about to cry.
“How long has he been like this?” He asks, frantic.
“Like six and a half minutes on and off, he was conscious at first,” her voice breaks, just a little.
Robby leaves for a second, yelling out into the ED for help and a gurney, and when he returns Dennis has wet himself. Whoever was nearby comes rushing in, and eventually a gurney is supplied. Asphyxiation is their biggest concern which they address by securing an oxygen mask over his face, hoping he can get some air even though his lungs are tensed. Between the attacks they move him into a gurney, and rush him into one of the trauma rooms. They push a muscle relaxer and after a few minutes the shaking stops. He’s given a mild sedative before he can wake up, knowing his brain won’t process what’s happened for a while and that the anxiety of waking up may cause him to seize again. Robby insists on being the one to change him into new scrubs while he sleeps, knowing Dennis wouldn’t want anyone else to see him like that. Right after he gets him settled, Robby calls Jack to come get him when he wakes up.

Dennis only sleeps for about 30 minutes, and when he wakes up his whole body aches and his head pounds. Everything is kind of blurry when he opens his eyes, but it clears after a minute. He doesn’t really remember much but it’s fairly easy for him to gather what happened. He does remember that he’s pissed at Robby when he sees him sitting next to his bed. Robby is just sitting there watching him.
“Dennis-“ he cuts him off.
“Fuck off,” he half groans, turning his head away.
Robby sighs, but listens. Dennis stares at him in the window once he’s gone, eventually watching Jack greet him. He watches while Robby explains what happened , and Jack looks annoyed at him. Dennis isn’t sure if he figured it out on his own or if Robby told him, but Jack definitely knows Robby has been avoiding him. He watches Jack sigh, give Robby a hug, then walk over to his room. Jack gives him a tired smile.
“Feeling ok?”
Dennis thinks about it and shakes his head, face covered in exhaustion. Jack nods, coming over to give him a tight hug and a kiss on the head. It’s not smart, someone might see them, but neither of them really care right now. He pulls away, leaving his hands on his shoulders and looking at him.
“Let’s get you home.”

Chapter 12

Summary:

Dennis comes home with after his seizure. Him and Robby finally talk once he finishes work.

Chapter Text

Dennis doesn’t talk on the way home, feeling tired and heavy and like nothing will come out if he tries. Jack keeps a hand on his head while he drives. When they get to the house, Jack helps him out of the car the same way he did when he had his first seizure at work. It’s kind of sweet. Dennis turns around to face him once they’re inside and buries his face in his chest.
“Thanks,” he says hoarsely.
Jack kisses his head, “do you want to go to bed?”
He pulls back a little and nods.
“Can we um,” he pauses, trying to blink away some of the brain fog. “Can we lay down in the guest room instead?”
Jack looks a little sad at the request but nods. Dennis is glad he doesn’t question him, he really can’t handle laying in Robby’s bed right now.
“Of course sweetheart.”
He falls asleep in minutes once he’s laying down and Jack is wrapped against his back.
He wakes up a few hours later feeling like shit, nausea wracking his body and head pounding. He groans as he sits up to rub his face, bringing his knees to his chest. Jack rubs a gentle hand up and down his back soothingly. While he’s sitting up he notices the color of his scrubs is different.
“Did they change my scrubs?”
Jack sighs, picking his next words carefully.
“During your seizure you lost control of your bladder.”
Dennis turns to look at him with his mouth hanging open.
“I pissed myself?” He asks, incredulously.
“It’s a common side effect mouse. You know that.”
He huffs, “that’s still fucking embarrassing.”
Jack tugs lightly at his shirt to get him to lay back down. Dennis complies and lays on his chest.
“Wait shit I have hickeys everywhere-“ Jack stops him before he freaks out further.
“Robby was the only one there when he changed you.”
Dennis groans again, remembering he’s still pissed at Robby.
“Would you like to talk about it?”
He isn’t pushing, just giving him the opportunity. Dennis breathes out a laugh.
“How much did you figure out on your own?”
Jack scoffs, “I know Robby has been avoiding you and that you’re angry about it.”
Dennis places his hands on Jack’s chest and rests his chin on them so he can look at him.
“Did he tell you I told him to fuck off?”
He laughs quietly, “yes he did.”
Even when he feels like this he enjoys the way the laugh rumbles in Jack’s chest. He thinks about what he wants to say for a minute.
“I think I’m mostly feeling abandoned,” he exhales, saying the next bit a little quieter. “Maybe a little used.”
Jack places a hand on the side of his face and looks at him, serious but soft.
“Dennis,” he makes sure he’s looking at him, “I can assure you it is not like that and never will be. Robby is dealing with his own issues and being an asshole about it but I can promise you he would never do that to you.”
Dennis sighs, “I know, it’s just kind of where my brain goes.
Jack nods and Dennis lays his head back down.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have told him to fuck off.”
“He deserved it.”
They both chuckle a little.
“What time is it?” Dennis asks.
Jack glances at his watch, “5:15.”
Dennis sighs again, “you need to get ready for work.”
Jack sighs as well, “yeah I do.”
Dennis follows him around for the next hour and a half while he changes and eats. They kiss before Jack leaves and he finds himself alone in the house.

Jack gets to work and immediately after handover drags Robby to an empty hallway.
“How’s he doing?” Robby asks, a little hollow sounding.
“Physically he’s fine, pretty sore and has a bad headache but stable. He’s really upset with you though.”
“I know,” he says.
“I’m pretty upset too.”
“I know,” he repeats.
Jack sighs, “he’s hurt Micheal. He feels like you used and abandoned him.”
That hits Robby hard, his chest getting tight and eyes watering. Jack hugs him and rubs his back.
“Just go talk to him ok? Tell him how you’re feeling.”
They stay like that for a minute, before saying their I love yous and goodbyes.

Dennis is scrolling on his phone in the guest room when he hears Robby come in. He thinks he should maybe do something, like meet him up front or at least in the hallway but he’s still upset so he just lays there until he comes to him. The door is cracked slightly but he still knocks. Dennis sits up with his legs hanging off the bed.
“Yeah.”
He looks like a mess, sad and guilty and like he might have been crying on the way home. Dennis gestures his head for Robby to sit on the bed with him and he does.
“Dennis I am so fucking sorry,” his voice breaks, “I honestly don’t know what I was thinking.”
He lets out a shaky breath, “I felt like you were leaving me.”
Robby nods a little to show his understanding, letting him continue.
“I felt like you got what you wanted and were done and I know it isn’t like that but that’s where my head went. I felt vulnerable and I needed support and you just… weren’t there.”
He starts crying.
“Then you started getting mad at me at work and that pissed me off because you’re always telling Jack and I we need to keep the relationship out of work but that was the opposite of what you were doing.”
Robby is crying too by the time he finishes speaking. He grabs his hand, holding it tight.
“I know, and I know it was horrible and I was being unprofessional and this is entirely on me.” He gets Dennis to look at him, “you need to understand that. This is not about you, this is about me and my inability to regulate my emotions in a healthy way. You did nothing wrong, and you have every right to be angry.”
Dennis presses his head into Robby’s shoulder.
“You were an asshole.”
“Yeah, I was.”
Dennis squeezes his hand.
“If you do it again I’ll have Trinity kill you.”
They both laugh softly through their tears. Robby removes his hand from Dennis’s and instead wraps his arm around his shoulder. He places his chin on top of his head.
“Please come join me in our bed.”
The way that he refers to it makes Dennis’s heart squeeze, feeling a sense of belonging. He nods, and lets Robby help him up. They move across the hall, it’s so close but it feels like a big difference. They fall asleep curled up together, both feeling a little more whole.

Chapter 13

Summary:

Robby makes up for being a dick to Dennis the past two days.

Chapter Text

The morning sun is filtering in when Dennis wakes up. His head lays on Robby’s chest and Jack’s arm is wrapped around him. It’s warm and comfortable until Dennis realizes that Robby should be working. He shoots up, disturbing the men sleeping next to him, and looks at the time. Jack groans at the sudden movement.. It’s 9:22.
“Shit Robby you’ve gotta get up.”
“What’s wrong Dennis?” Robby asks, barely awake.
“You’re late! Why didn’t Jack wake you up when he got home?”
Jack’s hand comes around his waist and starts pulling him to lay down again. Robby just softly laughs.
“Sorry sweetheart I forgot to tell you I signed myself out for today . You were passed out and I didn’t want to wake you.”
He lets Jack pull him back down into his embrace and rests his head on Robby again.
“Jack’ll be sleeping but I figured we could spend the day together since you’re off because of your seizure.”
“Oh.”
Dennis didn’t realize he was off today, even though it made sense with the severity of his seizure. He puts a hand in Dennis’s hair, getting him to look up.
“Would you like that?”
Dennis smiles softly, “yeah that sounds nice.”
They stay in bed a while longer, just enjoying being together in the morning. Robby finally gets up because he has to pee, so Dennis heads to the living room and waits for him. He’s surprised when Robby returns dressed. He gives him a questioning look. Robby chuckles.
“I was hoping to take you out to breakfast if you’re feeling up for it.”
Dennis raises his eyebrows. They’ve never really done traditional “dates”, most of the time they just hang out at the house, and he’s never been out with just one of them before. He smiles and nods.
“Yeah, that sounds great.”
He steals a pair of Jack’s jeans (which fit his waist but he needs to cuff them so they don’t reach the floor) and one of Robby’s sweaters. Robby smiles at him fondly when he returns, then they head out.
There’s a diner just up the street that Jack and Robby go to pretty often. Dennis has been there once with both of them. They decide to walk since it’s so close. Dennis always feels a little weird about initiating physical affection in public, Jack is usually the one to do anything but today Robby holds his hands while they walk down the street. He has a hard time not feeling too excited about it.
The diner is fairly quiet at the moment, seeing as it’s 10am on a Wednesday and most people are working. They’re seated at a booth. He looks over the menu weighing his options.
“Are you gonna judge me if I get a milkshake with breakfast?” He asks playfully.
“Only a little,” Robby jokes back, laughing.
Robby orders what he always does, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and turkey bacon. Dennis gets avocado toast and scrambled eggs. They both opt for coffee despite Dennis’s joke. While they eat, they end up in a long conversation about religion. Dennis has always found it interesting, and he’s knowledgeable due to his undergrad theology. He talks about growing up Christian and never really believing in it. Robby explains that his family was Jewish but not practicing growing up. He talks about his relationship with God, how he doesn’t really know if he believes but how he wants to.
It’s deep and personal and they both really enjoy it. They stay an extra hour talking after they’ve finished eating.
Dennis has spent a lot more time talking to Jack about personal stuff than Robby. He appreciates the conversation a lot, knowing how hard it is for Robby to open up sometimes.
They leave around noon, and decide to take a longer walk before they go home. Robby keeps his arm around him for the whole walk. They talk and joke while they walk. It’s intimate and comfortable. Robby struggles with it a little, worrying about people from the hospital being out and seeing them, but he does it anyway. It’s not just because Dennis wants him to, but because he wants to.
When they get home Dennis suggests they watch a movie and has Robby pick. He chooses Fifty First Dates. Dennis lays in his arms while they watch. It ends up being one of Dennis’s favorites they’ve watched together.
They lay on the couch together for a bit after the movie, just enjoying the company. Dennis has an idea after a while. He turns around to look at Robby.
“Do you guys have baking stuff here?”
Robby knits his eyebrows together thinking, “I don’t think so.” He laughs, “Jack and I are terrible at it. Why?”
Dennis sighs, “just wondering. I haven’t gotten the chance in a while and kind of felt like making cookies or something.”
Robby smiles at him, “let’s go get the stuff then. We don’t have anywhere to be.”
His eyes light up a little and he smiles. It makes Robby feel warm.
They go to the nearest supermarket and return with more than they intended. Robby had Dennis pick out some extra baking stuff in case he ever feels like it again while he’s at the house, saying it’s good for him to enjoy hobbies outside of work. They also end up with a few too many snacks because they’re starting to get hungry again, and poptarts for easy breakfasts because Dennis still doesn’t like Jack’s granola bars.
When they get home Jack is awake on the couch, getting excited when Dennis mentions cookies. They decide on chocolate chip cookies. While Dennis is baking, Robby mostly stays out of his way, just bringing him the ingredients he asks for and setting up the cookie sheets with parchment paper. He thinks it’s fun being able to boss him around. Once they’re in the oven, Robby and Jack start making dinner and they switch roles. Dennis brings them spices and chops vegetables while he cooks.
“It’s a good thing you’re not a surgeon because you suck at cutting,” Jack teases when Dennis brings him a mangled onion.
They all laugh. It’s playful and innocent and they are all enjoying it. Once it’s finished, they eat dinner then dessert together. Dennis gets high compliments on his cookies, Jack grabbing extras to bring to work.
Not long after, Jack gets ready and leaves for work, kissing them both goodbye. Robby and Dennis end up back on the couch, Robby reading and Dennis scrolling through his phone. Dennis turns his phone to Robby every once in a while to show him a tiktok, most of which Robby really doesn’t understand. Eventually they happily go to bed together.

Chapter Text

Dennis usually takes his testosterone shots on Wednesday, which leaves him seriously horny on Thursdays. Work acts as a great distraction because he’s always working on Thursdays and the best turn off is working with people who are sick and dying. And if he still feels like it after work he just jerks off on his own, not wanting to freak his boyfriends out with just how horny it makes him.
In the chaos of the week he forgot, having been at Robby and Jack’s place on Wednesday. He doesn’t think about it again until Friday, so he does his shot then and doesn’t think about it again. After work he goes over to Jack and Robby’s house because they are all going to have the weekend off. Jack is still working and Robby is asleep when he gets there. He just climbs into bed with Robby and goes to sleep.
The next morning Robby wakes him up around 6 to tell him he got called in. He grumbles, wanting to spend the day with both his boyfriends. Robby apologizes, kisses him, and tells him to go back to sleep. He listens to Robby getting ready, trying to go back to sleep, but then he remembers the dream he was having.
In his dream he was fingering Robby open while Jack kissed him. After he was opened up, Jack took his place, fucking Robby into the bed while he rode his face. Dennis squeezes his legs together at the memory, and realizes he’s soaked. That’s when he’s reminded of his late t-shot.
He tries to ignore it for a while, laying in bed with his eyes closed trying not to squirm. But after failing for 30 minutes and hearing Robby leave he decides he needs to do something about it. He figures he can take care of it quickly before Jack gets home and be at least somewhat normal for the rest of the day. Dennis considers doing it in the guest room, feeling a little wrong jerking off in his boyfriends’ bed while neither of the them are home, but ultimately saying fuck it because he’s already there and it smells like them.
He slips his hand into his boxers, lazily rubbing his dick. He plans on staying in them but his plan changes quickly when he wants to finger himself but can’t get the right angle. He fucks into himself fast, not able to get deep enough to fully satisfy him but enough to get him off when he touches his dick at the same time. He cums with a loud moan and that’s the end of it for about two minutes until he thinks about his dream again.
He shouldn’t keep going, he knows that, but he figures if he’s fast enough he can finish a second time before Jack gets back. So he keeps going, unzipping Robby’s hoodie to play with his chest while he does.
He gets lost in it, fucking into himself and touching whatever he can while it still just isn’t enough. He can’t hear anything except his loud moans and the sounds of his fingers sliding in and out of himself, so he doesn’t hear Jack get home.

Jack had a long shift. He was looking forward to having the day off with his husband and boyfriend when Robby entered the hospital. Apparently he had been called in due to the busyness of the pitt. He sighs disappointedly when he sees him, giving him a kiss then heading home.
He pulls into the driveway, ready to skip his usual morning yoga and workout and just fall asleep next to Dennis. His husband may be working but his boyfriend still has the day off. He comes into the house, not noticing anything out of the ordinary until he gets closer to the hallway.
He hears groaning, loud groaning. His first instinct is that something happened to Dennis, that he is having another seizure or something and needs help, so he rushes in. What he is met with is much more pleasant.
He lays in the center of the bed on top of the covers with his head thrown back. He is wearing only Robby’s sweatshirt which is unzipped so he can grab at his chest, and his legs are spread wide with his fingers buried in his pussy.
“Fuck,” he moans, before opening his eyes and freezing when his meet Jack’s.
Jack is just staring at him, eyes wide and mouth hanging open. He gets ready to apologize profusely until Jack speaks first.
“That’s a nice thing to come home to after a long shift.”
Jack looks at him in awe, eyes raking over his body which shakes with want. Dennis starts back up with gentle motion. He steps towards the bed and begins crawling on, placing his hands on Dennis’s knees when he gets close enough. Dennis whines sharply.
“Couldn’t wait?” Jack asks, voice deep with desire.
Dennis groans and shakes his head, “I forgot to take my fucking testosterone on Wednesday. It makes me like- fuck- really horny and usually I’m working and distracted when it happens but uh,” he moans.
“Maybe you should always take it on Fridays,” he starts rubbing his hands up and down Dennis’s thighs.
Dennis looks at him, pleading.
“Can you help please?”
He asks it quickly, whimpering and moaning through it. Jack groans.
“Of course baby, just-“ he exhales and starts pulling out his phone, “you look so fucking pretty. Can I send Robby a picture?”
Dennis gasps at the idea, immediately nodding his head. He thinks about Robby getting it at work, cursing and blushing and quickly putting his phone away. He hopes he thinks about it the whole day.
Jack snaps the photo and sends it quickly before tossing his phone away and getting over Dennis to kiss him. Dennis moans into the kiss and it spurs him on. He starts by pulling Dennis’s hand away and pinning it above his head, then rubbing his partially hard clothed dick over Dennis’s. Dennis yells his name.
He starts kissing down his neck and bringing his hand down his body slowly. He brings his fingers down his slit and spreads him, and Dennis rolls his hips trying to get any friction. He’s quick to push two fingers immediately inside of him.
Dennis is immediately squirming and whining loudly, Jack’s fingers being longer than his own and hitting him at a better angle. After a few thrusts, he gives him a third finger while mouthing at one of his nipples.
“Fuck- Jack- please,” he moans out.
Jack bites down a little and Dennis almost screams.
“What do you want, Mouse?”
Dennis clenches a little at the nickname.
“Fuck me, please,” he moans the last bit.
Jack considers Robby for a moment, wondering if he’d be upset and ultimately deciding he wouldn’t really be, that he would just be jealous. Robby also already got to fuck Dennis, so he decides it’s only fair. He starts to get off Dennis to get a condom, but he stops him by holding onto his arm.
“I’m- I’m on birth control and cl-clean,” he kind of stutters through it, Jacks fingers still inside of him. “If you’re ok with it I am.”
Jack moans out a quick “fuck” before slipping his dick out of his pants. Dennis groans when his fingers leave him, upset at the loss before moaning at his dick nudging his hole. Dennis pulls him down, kissing him hard. They both moan into the kiss when Jack slips in.
Jack sets a brutal pace to begin with, biting at Dennis’s shoulders and collarbones while he fucks into him. Dennis has noticed that’s something Jack does a lot, and it drives him fucking insane. It doesn’t take long for them both to get close, Dennis being wound up from all the time spent fucking himself and Jack just from how hot the whole thing is.
Dennis reaches down to touch himself and that’s what sends Jack over the edge, hips moving erratically as he fills Dennis. Dennis finishes a moment after at the feeling of Jack filling him.
They both breathe heavily and Jack collapses on top of Dennis. Dennis moves his arms and wraps them around Jack’s neck. They stay like that for a moment before Jack pulls out, Dennis whining at the loss. Instead of getting up to get a rag, Jack grabs Dennis’s boxers and wipes them both off with those.
“Don’t tell Robby we didn’t clean up properly, he’ll kill us,” Jack says, laughing and tossing the soiled boxers off the bed.
Dennis laughs, “deal.”
Jack pulls Dennis close, too tired to get up and change, and they both fall asleep like that.

Robby is a bit annoyed that he has to go into work, upset that he doesn’t get to spend the day with Jack and Dennis. He also understands though because he took Wednesday off with Dennis. He knows it’s going to be kind of a shitty day because they wouldn’t call him on his day off unless it was busy, so he prepares himself as such.
He kisses Jack goodbye and gets into it, approving different orders and tests and working on the remaining victims from the night shift. He’s about 40 minutes into his shift when he gets a text from Jack. He checks it without opening it at first.

Jack :That's nice to come home to…:

There’s an image attached but he can’t see it without opening his phone so he does. He’s met with a picture of Dennis on their bed wearing only his hoodie and touching himself. He’s red and sweaty and it’s clear he has been at it for a while.
As soon as he processes it he shoves his phone into his pocket and looks around, praying nobody saw. He breathes heavily, staring into space for a minute before he’s called away to work on an incoming trauma.
He tries to put it out of his mind as he works, but he can’t stop thinking about it. He wonders why Dennis didn’t say anything or if he started while he was still home. It doesn’t upset him that Dennis was masturbating, he just really wishes he was there for it. He keeps thinking about Jack coming home to it, feeling full of jealousy. Robby keeps wondering if Jack helped him, and that just turns him on even more.
It’s hours before he has a break again, and despite the fact that he somehow manages to do his job he is constantly thinking about the picture. He slips into the staff bathroom when he has the chance and calls Jack. It’s around noon, so he’s probably asleep, he calls anyway. If Jack can distract him all day by sending something like that he can interrupt his sleep for a few minutes. It’s Dennis who answers the phone.
“Hello Micheal,” he says, his tone smug.
He exhales into the phone.
“Where’s Jack?”
Dennis laughs, “he said to take his phone when I got up so you wouldn’t wake him.”
Of course he did, Robby thought, asshole.
“I’m assuming you liked our picture?”
Robby groans, “you both are trying to kill me.”
Dennis laughs again.
“What were- When-,” he isn’t entirely sure what he’s asking.
“You sure you want to be talking about this right now? Wouldn’t want you getting an HR violation if anyone heard,” Dennis teases him.
He groans again.
Dennis chuckles, “we had a nice time. We’ll talk about it when you get home.”
Then he hangs up, and that’s all he gets. Robby honestly regrets calling, the whole interaction just making him hornier. He needs to get it out of his head. He rubs his face and readjusts his pants a little before returning to work.
It’s shitty again for a while before things slow down. At around 3 pm there’s not much else for him to do so he’s allowed to go home. He’s thankful for that, because he is still incredibly distracted by everything from this morning.

Dennis is sitting on the couch watching something shitty on cable when Jack comes in.
He smiles, “Robby called.”
Jack laughs and joins him on the couch, “and?”
Dennis shrugs, “seemed pretty distracted.
They both laugh and watch tv together.
An hour later they’re still watching tv when Robby gets home. They knew there was a chance he would get home early, and they’re both happy to hear the door open. Still, neither of them move to greet him.
He walks in, his breathing a little uneven and his footsteps kind of frustrated. He turns off the tv and sits in the chair in front of the couch. They both just smile at him.
“How was work hon?” Jack asks casually.
Robby narrows his eyes at him.
“You both suck.”
They laugh at that. Jack gets up and stands in front of him, placing a hand in his hair.
“Aw come on, you liked it.”
He looks up at him, annoyance wavering. “You can’t send me that shit at work.”
“He just looked so pretty like that,” he glances over at Dennis, “didn’t want you to miss out.”
Robby is flushed. He looks over at Dennis who’s still sitting on the couch with a smug smile. Jack follows his gaze and smirks.
“Do you want to tell him what happened earlier Mouse?”
Dennis shrugs, “why not.”
Jack tugs lightly at his hair, indicating for him to stand up. He gasps slightly, then follows him to the couch to sit between them. Dennis turns to him and casually starts explaining.
“I had a dream about us,” he starts, “it was a good dream, made me wet.” He drags his fingers against Robby’s chest as he talks, “you were leaving and I was too worked up to go back to sleep so I decided to handle it myself. I guess I didn’t realize how long I was taking because Jack came home to me like that.”
Both Dennis and Jack are getting closer to Robby as Dennis speaks, invading his space. It’s driving him crazy.
“He didn’t want you to miss out so he sent the picture.” Dennis shifts, already basically on top of him but now straddling him. “I wanted his help. He was happy to comply.”
Robby just sits there, breathing unevenly and slightly amazed by the whole situation. He’s seen Dennis be confident but this is a whole other level. It’s doing ungodly things to him. Jack’s hands on his hair and rubbing Dennis’s side are not helping.
“Fuck this isn’t fair,” Robby groans, tilting his head back.
They laugh at him for the second time. Jack leans into his ear.
“We plan to make it fair.”
Then Dennis is kissing him. The want is clear on both ends, both being desperate for the contact. Jack starts kissing his neck and rubbing both their thighs. Dennis shifts, starting to grind on his dick and he moans loudly. Dennis pulls back from the kiss, smiling like that was exactly what he wanted.
“We should take this to bed,” Dennis offers.
Both men are quick to comply once Dennis climbs off of Robby. As they walk Jack’s hands and mouth remain on Robby wherever he can touch. Once they’re in the bedroom, Jack quickly discards Robby’s shirt, mouthing over the newly exposed skin. A moment later, Jack is pushing him down into the bed and Dennis rests down by his legs. Dennis hungrily pulls down his pants and boxers. He feels exposed, as both his boyfriends are still fully clothed and he’s naked. His dick twitches at the thought. Dennis and Jack just take a moment to stare at him, appreciating the exposed flesh. Dennis licks over his stomach and grabs at his thighs while Jack begins to kiss him hard and sloppy. He almost doesn’t notice when Dennis takes hold of his dick and lines up his mouth over it.
Dennis takes him all the way down in one go, punching a loud sound out of his throat. Jack just keeps kissing him. They must have planned this, he thinks, because they both seem to know what the other is going to do before they do it. The thought turns him on even more, and he’s honestly embarrassingly hard at the whole thing.
He’s loud, Dennis working hard to suck every noise he can out of him. Jack just keeps kissing him, groping at his flesh the whole time.
Robby is so blissed out that he doesn’t notice Dennis’s finger prodding at his asshole until he slips it in.
“Fuck!” He moans out at the stretch.
Dennis pulls off of his dick to smile at him.
“You want to find out what I dreamed about?”
He doesn’t wait for an answer, taking his dick down his throat again and slowly moving his finger in and out. It aches a little, and he wonders if Dennis plans on doing all the stretching without any lube. His question is soon answered when he pulls his finger out and Jack stops kissing him. He whines at the loss of both, until Jack retrieves lube from the bedside drawer and tosses it to Dennis.
“Stop whining,” Jack demands, going back to kissing him.
Dennis has stopped sucking his dick, focusing on fingering him open. He tries not to whine about it, but his dick aches to be touched and he can’t help it. Jack puts his hand over his throat with gentle pressure, a warning.
Dennis thrusts into him with two fingers, just barely brushing his prostate, acting as a subtle tease. That’s the best thing about them all being doctors, they can easily find the best spots to make the others feel good.
He keeps going, eventually getting a third in. He screams into Jack’s mouth when Dennis eventually nails his prostate head on, then it all stops. Jack and Dennis both get off the bed and he groans.
“He’s pretty impatient, maybe we should make him wait longer,” Jack says.
Dennis chuckles, “nah he’s been waiting all day. He’s earned it.”
They both strip each other, making a show of it for Robby as he’s forced just to watch. Dennis comes and sits near his head, running his fingers through his hair. He doesn’t understand what’s happening until Jack yanks his legs to the edge of the bed and slams into him. He moans loud, and is instantly muffled by Dennis’s dick in his mouth.
It’s fucking amazing, and he knows that it was definitely worth waiting for as Jack hits his prostate with every thrust and Dennis rides his tongue. He ends up cumming untouched, with Jack filling him and Dennis finishing all over his face a few moments later. They all stay there, taking a breath. Dennis is the first to move, climbing off Robby’s face so he can breathe properly and laying down beside him. Then Jack pulls out and goes to the bathroom to get a rag. Robby just lays there in blissed out shock. He looks over at Dennis who gives him a tired smile.
“That was amazing,” he says.
Dennis laughs quietly, “yeah it was.”
Jack returns quickly, wiping everyone down and discarding the rag before laying on Robby’s other side. Robby falls asleep fast once Jack and Dennis are curled up at his sides, and the other two are asleep as well soon.

Chapter Text

Dennis is sitting on the kitchen counter scrolling on his phone and drinking coffee and Jack is laying on the couch by the time Robby gets up. He had napped the longest due to his recent shift. He joins Dennis in the kitchen.
“Interesting place to be sitting,” he says, pouring a cup from the pot of coffee.
Dennis smiles and sets his phone down and widens the space between his legs, letting Robby stand between them. Robby places his hands on his waist and Dennis wraps his arms around his neck and kisses him.
“You sleep good?” He asks.
Robby chuckles, “yeah. You guys really tired me out.”
He laughs, pulling back a little with his arms still around Robby’s neck. He looks at him, smiling.
“I wasn’t expecting that from you,” Robby says.
Dennis laughs again, “it’s my testosterone it makes me like, crazy fucking horny. Usually I’m working and it distracts me but I took it late this week.”
Robby smiles, “well I liked it for the record.” He bumps his head on Dennis’s, “you’re hot when you’re confident.”
They migrate to the living room and sit with Jack on the couch. After a while the topic of dinner comes up and Jack suggests they go out. Robby complains a little about having to get dressed.
“Why don’t we just order in?” Robby asks.
“Come on Mike don’t be lame, we never go out for dinner,” he argues. “Mouse was so good today, let's take him out.”
That seems to end the argument, and they all move to get ready. They agree on an Italian restaurant, far enough that they’ll have to take Jack’s truck. It isn’t too fancy, but nice enough that they can’t be in sweatpants. While Jack and Robby get dressed, Dennis goes sifting through their closet.
“You really should bring some of your clothes over here,” Jack comments.
He knows it’s just convenience, but the thought makes Dennis happy. It makes him feel a sense of belonging.
Dennis steals a pair of dark jeans from Jack. It’s a little warm out, and he considers wearing just a t-shirt but he removed his tape after his shift last night and he really hates the way it fits when he tries. He stands in the mirror just staring for a minute, trying to get over it but ultimately pulling on a baggy knit sweater which he assumes is Robby’s. It looks nice anyways.
Jack and Robby both wear jeans, but Jack wears a polo while Robby wears another one of his sweaters. Dennis thinks they look hot.
Dinner is good, Dennis hadn’t eaten at a restaurant that good in years and he raves about it through the whole meal. They skip dessert at the restaurant, instead opting to get ice cream nearby and take an evening walk in the park about a block away.
They talk about nothing of importance, enjoying the peacefulness of the night. Their lives in the pitt are so filled with chaos that they cherish nights like these greatly. Jack keeps an arm wrapped around Dennis’s shoulders and holds Robby’s hand. An older woman smiles at them as they walk by her.
“You three are so cute! I wish I could get my son to spend time with me like that,” she says enthusiastically.
They all freeze, Robby looks embarrassed but Jack and Dennis both hold back laughter. Robby goes to speak before Jack interrupts him, smiling.
“Yeah well our boy’s a good one.”
His hand shifts down Dennis’s back and he quickly squeezes his ass. Dennis has to stop himself from reacting. Robby looks at Jack, gritting his teeth. The woman is still just smiling at them, entirely unaware.
“You’ve raised him right,” she says before continuing past them.
Jack’s hand comes back up around Dennis’s shoulder, and once she’s out of earshot they both laugh. Robby glares at them.
They finish their walk and return to the car, feeling relaxed from their night out. Jack drives and Dennis sits in the front seat as offered by Robby. They return home to continue their calm evening.

Chapter Text

Robby is still wrapped around Dennis’s back when he wakes up but Jack is already up. He looks at the clock and sees it’s 6:30. It’s pretty normal for Jack to be up this early, the night shift has his sleep schedule on extremely weird hours, but Dennis is never up this early. He tries for a few minutes to go back to sleep but ultimately decides to get up, detangling himself from Robby’s warm limbs. He pulls on one of Robby’s hoodies, feeling weird about his chest in the shirt he’s wearing, and goes to find Jack.
He finds Jack standing in the kitchen, sipping coffee and looking at something on his phone. He’s using one of his forearm crutches rather than his prosthetic. Dennis enjoys when he uses his crutches, liking the way the muscles in his arms work when he leans on them. Jack smiles at him fondly as he gets a cup of coffee.
“Morning Mouse.”
Dennis smiles back and comes to lean his head on his shoulder, on the opposite side of his crutch. “Morning.”
Jack places his phone down on the counter and wraps his arm around Dennis’s shoulders, kissing his head.
“You’re not usually up this early, I was going to leave for the gym in a few minutes.”
Dennis hums, leaning into his chest. Jack pulls him back by his shoulder to look at him.
“Would you like to come with me? I get a free guest pass with my membership,” he offers.
Dennis considers it, he hasn’t gotten the chance to work out in a little while. It sounds nice so he nods. Jack smiles.
“Great, go get dressed then we’ll get going.”
He quickly gets dressed, pulling on Jack’s sweatpants and leaving the shirt and sweatshirt he was already wearing. He tends to like Robby’s shirts more, as they’re larger and fit him baggier. When he comes up front Jack has put on his prosthesis and is holding two travel mugs for them.
The gym isn’t far, but they take the truck anyway. Dennis feels a little out of place there, so he sticks to the basic equipment. He spends some time doing his usual dumbbell workouts, then jogs on the treadmill for a while. He’s pretty muscular, he has been since he started testosterone. Fortunately his genes have made it a lot easier for him to gain muscle mass. That being said he still doesn’t really know what he’s doing when he works out. Jack definitely knows what he’s doing, and it shows.
Dennis tries a few more things before they leave. He feels good, but he’s overheating from the effort so he takes his sweatshirt off. He has to make sure not to look down at his chest on the way home.
When they get back, Jack offers that Dennis showers with him and he happily accepts. He’s showered at their house a handful of times by now, but never with them.
Jack sits on the toilet lid undoing his prosthesis after he’s undressed while Dennis undresses. After he’s undressed his eyes catch his body in the mirror and he stands there staring for a moment, a little stuck. He’s a lot happier with it than he used to be, his waist has filled in more and he likes the muscles that have grown, but all he can really focus on is his chest.
Jack notices his trance and stands, comes over to him, using the sink for balance, and wraps his arms around his waist and chest from behind. They smile at each other in the mirror, and Jack kisses his cheek.
A moment later he helps Jack to the shower and they both get in. It’s a good sized shower, easily fitting both of them when they’re standing and even better when Jack sits in his shower chair.
Dennis feels a little awkward being naked in front of him in a nonsexual context. It isn’t like he minds it, he’s just not used to it. He also is actively trying not to recognize his body. Usually during his showers he spends a lot of time dissociating, sometimes even turning off the lights to avoid any glimpses at himself. Right now he is hyper aware. Jack seems to notice his discomfort.
“Will you wash my hair for me please?” Jack asks, trying to provide a distraction.
Dennis smiles and nods, reaching for his shampoo. Once he’s done, Jack gestures in front of himself with his head.
“Sit. Let me do yours. Whose do you prefer?”
Dennis sits on the shower floor in front of him with his back to him.
“Yours.”
Since his first shower at their house, he’s realized Jack’s products are for curly hair and that they make his hair look a lot better than anything he’s ever used. He tried to get the brand the next time he went shopping after that realization, but Jack’s products are the really expensive ones and he doesn’t have the money to be spending on that.
He leans back on Jack’s legs, enjoying how his nails scratch at his scalp. He’s always loved the way Jack plays with his hair. They finish up and get out. Dennis redresses in a new t-shirt and a pair of Jack’s shorts, once again pulling on and zipping Robby’s hoodie over the top. Robby is up and in the kitchen when they come out.
“You showered without me,” he grumbles.
Jack laughs, “maybe you should wake up earlier.”
They settle into comfortable silence. No one feels like doing anything complicated for breakfast so they all just put their own stuff together. Dennis makes avocado toast. Jack and Robby have learned to keep the house fully stocked with avocados even though neither of them are big fans because it keeps Dennis eating regularly when they don’t cook.
They’re all sitting on the couch doing their own things a few hours later. This is mostly what their days off consist of, none of them really wanting to do much before they return to work.
The season has begun to change so it gets hot in the afternoons now, and Jack has noticed how Dennis still wears baggy hoodies even though he’s clearly uncomfortable.Today is the same, but it’s even hotter so he’s sweating and getting a little flushed.
“You okay Den? You’re looking a little warm.”
Dennis looks up at him from his phone, eyes a little wide like he’s been caught.
“No, um, I'm alright.”
Jack doesn’t plan on pushing any further but Robby glances over at Dennis as well and looks concerned.
“He’s right, kid. Why don’t you take off the sweatshirt?”
“I’m fine guys honestly,” he sounds a little defensive.
They both back off, but as the day goes on it just gets hotter and when he gets up to go to the bathroom a little while later his head spins and he almost falls. Jack catches him before he does.
“Fuck,” Dennis groans.
Jack sits him back down and kneels in front of him. He places a hand on his forehead and frowns.
“Sweetheart you have a fever we need to take it off.”
Dennis groans again and leans back into the couch. The heat has been bothering him for hours and his head is feeling fuzzy now. He knows he needs to take it off but he really can’t handle seeing himself right now. He tries to get up and storm off, but both his boyfriends are holding him back, not wanting him to fall.
“I said I’m fucking fine!”
He isn’t really sure why he got so mad. Somewhere deep in his mind he feels guilty but he isn’t thinking straight otherwise. Jack and Robby just stare at him. He tries to talk again, apologize or something but nothing comes out. His eyelids twitch a moment after. It takes Jack and second to realize what’s happening.
“Robby, lay him down,” he orders.
Robby follows the order immediately, also seeing the signs of an incoming seizure. He pulls Dennis, stretching his body out and having him lay his head on his lap. Jack stays on the ground, gently caressing his arm. It comes and goes quick once he’s laid down, Dennis remaining conscious through it. Robby manages to get him out of the sweatshirt after the seizure ends. The emotional response comes immediately after, and he’s suddenly crying. He turns towards Robby’s stomach, hiding his face while he cries. It’s involuntary, Dennis knows it, but he’s embarrassed and feels guilty for his outburst when they were just trying to help him.
His boyfriends just sit quietly with him while he cries, knowing there’s nothing they can do about the wave of emotions associated with his seizures,  but still comfortingly rubbing his back and head.
“I’m sorry,” he says weakly, muffled by Robby’s stomach.
He rolls onto his back, still crying but tears slowing down.
“I don’t know why I got so angry I just-,” he sighs, “I really can’t look at my body right now and then I got hot and my brain just wasn’t working and-,” Jack cuts him off.
“We aren’t mad at you sweetheart, we’re just worried.”
Dennis turns his head to look at him and reaches a hand out for him. Jack responds by getting up and moving his legs so he can sit on the couch with Dennis’s legs on top of his. Dennis and Robby shift so Robby’s back rests half on the side of the couch and Dennis’s rests somewhat on him. One of Robby’s arms wraps around his waist while the other strokes his hair, and Jack keeps one hand on one of his legs and the other hugging around his back. They wait a while before anyone speaks, Robby is the first one to say something.
“Have you been having a lot of dysphoria recently?”
He keeps petting Dennis’s hair. Dennis takes a deep breath.
“It’s just my chest really. I don’t really notice it during the week because I’m so busy but y’know I take a break from taping when I have days off and I’m not doing anything so I really focus on it,” he leans his head back into Robby’s chest. “And it’s fucking stupid but I hate it and I guess I get kind of scared you guys are gonna hate it too.”
Jack and Robby nod sympathetically. Jack looks him in the eye and runs a hand through Dennis’s curls. His look is kind but serious.
“Dennis, we don't hate any part of you. We hate that it’s hurting you, but that’s very different.” He places a hand on his cheek, “we’re here for you, ok? And we will be here to remind you that the parts you don’t like don’t make you who you are, but you need to be safe.”
Dennis sighs and nods, “okay.”
They sit there holding each other for a little while longer in comfortable silence.

Dennis ends up falling asleep with Robby and Jack holding him on the couch. They lay him down with his head on Robby’s lap and legs over Jack’s. Robby runs his fingers through his hair.
“Has he ever talked to you about that before?” He asks Jack.
Jack sighs and shakes his head.
“I noticed he was struggling with it this morning when we showered though.”
Robby hums.
“Do you think he’s been covering them because he doesn’t trust us?” Robby asks after a minute.
“No. I mean I’m sure he’s worried about what we might think but I think it’s really about himself. He hasn’t been kind to himself about it.”
Robby is looking down at Dennis, peaceful and sleeping. He tries to imagine for a moment what he sees wrong with his body, but he can’t. Robby knows that it’s the distinction between the parts of himself that he sees as belonging to him and the parts belonging to her, but he just doesn’t see a difference. Dennis’s transition has treated him well, and although he’s still a considerably “feminine” man he passes very well as a man. His chest isn’t that large, hell, Jack’s is probably bigger, but he knows that doesn’t make a difference to Dennis and it upsets him.
It frustrates him because he knows it comes from how he was treated when he was younger. Knows it’s because these are the things his family would point out and say that’s what makes him “still a woman” despite all his work.
Jack is more at peace with Dennis’s trauma, in the same way he is at peace with his own. He recognizes it happened, and that it still affects him, but doesn’t feel angry about it because he made it out the other end. He would rather focus on helping Dennis now than being upset about his past. Jack is the more rational one in that sense.
“Is there anything we can do for him?” Robby asks.
Jack sighs again, “eventually, yes. He obviously can’t afford surgery so we can take care of that. He’ll fight us like hell but I don’t think he’ll actually deny it. But he won’t be able to take the time off for that for a few years.”
Robby looks down at him sadly. He hates that he can’t do anything right now to help except be there for him. Jack does too, in his own way, but he’s glad that he can at least support him until then.

Dennis wakes up about an hour later, still a little foggy. Jack and Robby are still with him, and he really doesn’t feel like he deserves it. Jack is the first to notice he’s awake, smiling and squeezing his leg gently. He rubs his face, trying to be a little more cognizant. Robby looks down at him, also smiling, and the guilt hits hard.
“I am so fucking sorry I yelled at you guys,” he says, looking between them.
Robby shakes his head, “don’t be.”
“I need to control my emotions better.”
Jack scoffs, “we all do sometimes.”
Dennis sighs. Both of their hands lay gently on him and part of him doesn’t understand why. In a way he wants them to be mad and lash out at him for it- that that would be what he deserves. But they’re still being so gentle with him.
They just keep going about their day like it’s not a big deal and he doesn’t understand it. He’s on edge for a while, ready for them to get mad at him once they decide he’s back to normal enough to take it and they just don’t.
Eventually he settles down a bit, easily joking with them while they make dinner together and enjoying the meal with them. Before any of them realize it it’s time for Jack to start his shift.
Dennis follows Jack back when he goes to change after Robby denies his request to help with dishes. He sits on the edge of the bed, just enjoying being there with him a little longer. Once he’s changed, Jack comes and stands in front of him, holding his face while he kisses his forehead. Dennis wraps his arms around his waist and places his head on his chest.
“Hey,” Jack says fondly, getting him to look up. “I love you.”
Dennis sits with it for a second, looking at him in awe, wondering if he heard him correct. He smiles at him.
“I love you too.”
Jack kisses him, gentler than usual. They take another minute just to enjoy being there together before Jack has to leave.

Notes:

i feel like it’s really easy to tell i like jack better than robby and im sorry

Chapter 17

Summary:

Jack and Robby are called into work on their day off so Dennis spends the day home alone.

Chapter Text

It’s rare that Dennis isn’t working while both his boyfriends are. Because of their alternating shifts one of them is usually home. Today is the Sunday before Dennis starts his night shift rotation and Jack and Robby are actually both supposed to be off today (which is why he’s at their house) but there was a crisis at the hospital and they both got called in.
It’s not that he isn’t comfortable being at their house alone, he just doesn’t really know what to do with himself. He knows they don’t mind what he does and there’s nothing he could touch that they wouldn’t be ok with but he still feels weird about it when he’s alone there.
After some contemplation he sucks it up and makes himself breakfast even though he feels nervous about it for no reason. Dennis eats in silence.
He scrolls on his phone for a while, but gets bored pretty quickly. He’s a lot more content doing nothing when his boyfriends are around. It probably has something to do with his childhood, he realizes.
There was always something to do on the farm, and his family expected him to be doing it. He also knows this is probably why he does so well working in the pitt, because he always has something to do.
Eventually he gives in to his urge to do something, and starts looking around the house for a bit. He’s wandered surprisingly little for how often he is there. Ultimately though, there isn’t a whole lot to explore. He does end up sitting by the record player in the dining room and flipping through their record collection. His family had a lot of records when he was growing up, and there was always one playing. He became accustomed to the constant background noise (another reason working in the ED has worked out for him).
Dennis has talked to Jack and Robby about the record player, finding out they don’t use it much because if they want to listen to music they just tend to use their phones, but they like having it. That checks out, because he’s never seen them use it. They told him he can use it if he wants, and he decides now is the opportunity to try.
It’s similar to the one he had growing up, and he figures it out easily, putting on a queen record he found in his search.
He has always liked the sound better on a record player. He loves listening to music on his phone but it really isn’t the same. The way the music fills the room is so much more satisfying with a record player. It reminds him of dinner with his family on the nights they actually ate together.
He just sits on the floor for a while next to it, enjoying the music thrumming in his chest. It helps him relax a little in the space. He moves more fluidly, feeling less like an invader in the home.
His attention zeroes in on the leaking kitchen sink. He noticed it about a week ago, but didn’t really know how to bring it up. It’s been pissing him off because he knows he can fix it. He just hasn’t had the time and felt like it might be an invasion.
He’s a little worried they might be upset, but he decides just to say screw it and fix the damn thing. They probably won’t even notice he thinks. He goes out to the garage and grabs the small toolbox that they have. It’s not nearly as big as the one they had on the farm, and he thinks offhandedly one day he’ll have to make them get some better ones, but it works for what he needs. He gets into it and remembers how much he enjoys tasks like this. He’s always been good with his hands.
It really doesn’t take long, it’s a simple task and he’s glad they don’t have to pay a plumber $300 for it. He feels a lot more comfortable when he’s done too.
He flips the record and dances to it for a while, a habit he is constantly doing when he’s alone. Trinity has walked in on him more times than he can count since he’s moved in, and he still gets just as embarrassed about it every time.
The record ends and he puts on another (this time a Johnny Cash album) and lays on the couch. Dennis scrolls for a while but he's getting bored again so he goes to text his group chat with Robby and Jack.

Dennis :when r u guys gonna be home?:

It takes a minute to get a response.

Jack :Shouldn’t be too much longer hopefully. Mike is just finishing his charts so as long as nothing else comes in we should be leaving soon.:

Dennis smiles at his phone, kind of feeling like an idiot for doing it. He goes back to scrolling for a minute before he gets an idea. He pulls up his shirt a little and tugs his pants down on his hips and snaps a picture of his happy trail before sending it in the chat, just to tease them a little. Jack responds in seconds.

Jack :I’ll tell him to hurry up.:

A few minutes pass.

Robby :Jesus Den. We’re coming home now.:

Dennis chuckles at his phone, imagining their reactions. He loves watching his boyfriends react to his teasing. He stays laying on the couch, happily awaiting their arrival.

Chapter 18

Summary:

Jack is dealing with his PTSD

Notes:

i’m such a liar guys. i said i probably wouldn’t posting for a few days then ended up writing like three chapters. the hyperfixation is hard and the grind never stops.

Chapter Text

Jack lays between Dennis and Robby, all enjoying their last few minutes before Jack and Dennis have to go back to work. Jack probably could call out, seeing as he was working four hours prior, but he chooses to go anyway. It’s Dennis’s first night shift in a while anyways and he wants to be around in case he needs him.
Jack sighs, “we’ve gotta get going Mouse.”
Robby and Dennis both grumble but ultimately Dennis climbs off the bed and Robby releases Jack.
“Do you want help changing the sheets?” Jack offers to Robby.
Robby chuckles, “no I’ll deal with it later. Get ready for your shift.”
Jack and Dennis change into their scrubs (Robby and Jack bought Dennis a few pairs so he could stop using the loaners from the hospital) and head out. They pick up fast food on the way, their afternoon activities having distracted them from having dinner before they left.
Upon arrival, the ED is fairly quiet. It stays that way for hours and Jack is mostly doing paperwork until around 4 am. He gets called out to the trauma bay for an incoming GSW. Dennis and Mel are already waiting when he gets there. Dennis gives him a tired smile which he returns.
Minutes later the ambulance arrives. He is unconscious in critical condition. They rush him to a trauma room, Jack shouting orders and others going through vitals as they get them. Once they’re in the trauma room Jack gets a good look at the man. He’s immediately unsettled.
It’s a white man in his mid-twenties with two GSWs to the stomach. It’s nothing extraordinary or that he hasn’t seen before, but the man looks familiar. It’s not like Jack actually knows him, he just looks like someone he knew and he can’t place who. He’s working to stop the bleeding when it clicks.
He looks like a man he knew in the military, not anyone he knew particularly well but when you’re in close quarters like that you get to know them well enough. He can’t even really remember his name now, but he remembers how he died. He remembers watching him die in the same incident he lost his leg.
Jack has to ignore it, he has a job to do and this man will bleed out if he doesn’t stay on task. He manages to get it out of his head for the time being, working with everyone in the room to do everything they can.
It doesn’t matter. They work on him for about 40 minutes and nothing gets better. The damage to his organs is too extreme and when his pressure bottoms out they know there’s nothing else they can do. The monitor emits its last continuous tone before Jack shuts it off and glances at the clock.
“Time of death 4:46,” he announces.
Jack leaves the room fast, discarding his bloody gloves and gown before exiting. He can’t be here right now. The memories keep playing in his head and it’s taking everything in him not to collapse from it. He needs to get home before that happens.
He clocks himself out, having the authority to do so, and texts his chat with Dennis and Robby.

Jack :Coming home early, too tired.:

He doesn’t wait for a response, he just leaves. Jack tries to think about anything else to get himself home while he’s driving. The drive feels a lot longer than it usually does, and he’s struggling not to slip into a state of panic, but he makes it home.
Robby is in the kitchen with a cup of coffee when he gets there. Jack doesn’t say much, he tells him he loves him and he’ll see him later, then he heads to their bedroom.

It is a hard case. It’s always a hard case when they can’t do anything for the patient, so it’s hard but not horrible. Which is why Dennis isn’t sure why Jack seems so off. He notices it once they get in the trauma room (just barely, he’s busy trying to save the patient so he can’t pay much attention), and it’s even weirder how fast he leaves the room after it’s over.
Dennis knows sometimes certain cases just hit harder than others, or that if you’re already having a fucked up day it hurts worse, but he really can’t pinpoint what happened. He doesn’t get the chance to ask Jack about it, because about 10 minutes after they’ve wrapped up he texts Robby and him that he’s going home. He tries to believe that’s why he was acting weird, that he is just exhausted from the double shifts but he just can’t shake the feeling there’s something else wrong. He finds Mel after completing the victim’s chart to ask if she noticed anything.
“Hey Mel, are you doing alright? That was a rough one.”
She smiles at him, tired but ok.
“Yeah I’m alright. Are you?”
He nods, then shifts to what he actually wants to ask.
“Did Dr Abbot seem off to you?”
She tilts her head and narrows her eyes, visibly considering it, then she shrugs.
“I didn’t notice anything.”
He hums and that’s the end of it. If something isn’t wrong he doesn’t want to concern anyone, and even if something is he doesn’t think Jack would want everyone knowing.
So he just keeps working, because Jack already went home and he’s still there. The next hour passes by fast and before he knows it he’s doing handover. Afterwards he pulls Robby to a mostly empty hallway to talk to him.
“Did um-,” he pauses, looking around, “did Dr. Abbot seem upset when he came home?”
“Dr Abbot?” Robby asks, raising his eyebrows at the formality.
Dennis gestures his head towards a nurse standing a few feet away. He’s speaking quietly and knows he probably doesn’t need to worry about calling him Jack, but he does just in case.
“Ah,” Robby says.
He thinks about it for a moment.
“He honestly went to bed so fast I didn’t notice anything. Why do you ask?”
Dennis sighs, “we had a guy come in with double GSWs who didn’t make it. Was a pretty usual case but he just seemed… off.”
“Hm.”
They both just stare at each other for a minute, unsure of what to say or do about the situation. Dennis gets a little closer, lowering his voice even more.
“I think I’m gonna go back to your place to check on him. Is that ok?”
Robby laughs quietly, “you don’t have to ask sweetheart.”
Dennis smiles at him, and Robby smiles back. They both want a hug, but they’re too out in the open to do so. They settle for a fist bump and Dennis heads out.
He takes the bus to their house, he has finally figured out the schedule so he doesn’t have to walk there every time. He needs to get used to the bus again anyway, seeing as Trinity and him are on opposite rotations at the moment and she won’t be able to drive him to and from work for a few weeks.
The house is quiet when he gets inside, he thinks it’s a good sign, assuming Jack is asleep. But when he walks down the hall to the bedroom he isn’t in bed. He notices the bathroom door is cracked and the light is on so he cautiously pushes it open.
Jack is sitting on the floor with his back against the wall, staring wide eyed in front of him and unmoving.
“Hey Jack,” Dennis tries.
There’s no response, he just sits there silent, not even acknowledging Dennis. Dennis recognizes it for what it is, a flashback. Jack has talked to him about them before. He doesn’t have them often (he’s gone to years of therapy to ensure that), but he wanted Dennis to be prepared in case he did have one in front of him.
Dennis slides in, sitting against the sink in front of Jack. He doesn’t touch him, knowing it will probably cause him to panic. He just sits there with him.
He wishes there is something else he can do, but he is following Jack’s instructions. Jack told him there is nothing he can do once he’s in a flashback, that he just has to let it run its course. Once it’s over, he’s supposed to ask him a couple questions and comfort him how he can. There are different severities, and Jack has warned him he’ll be out of it, that he might not recognize him or that he might get violent, and in that case he needs to just step back until he comes to.
They sit there for a while, it’s only two or three minutes but it feels a lot longer. Finally, Jack blinks and looks around.
“Hey,” Dennis says quietly to get him attention, “do you know where you are?”
Jack looks around for a second with his eyebrows furrowed, trying to gather his thoughts, then he nods. Dennis nods back
“That’s good,” he hesitates for a second, “do you know who I am?”
Jack narrows his eyes at him, reading his face and looking him over. Then he nods just a little. Dennis lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.
“Good, that’s great Jack. Do you want me to sit next to you?”
He nods faster this time, face still a bit vacant. Dennis comes and sits next to him, keeping a little bit of distance at first.
“Can I touch you?” He asks gently.
Jack nods again. Dennis gingerly takes his hand and holds it kind of tight in an attempt to ground him. Jack blinks a few more times, then rests his head on Dennis’s shoulder.
They stay sitting there for a long time, until Jack is aware enough to talk.
“Thanks mouse,” he says hoarsely.
Dennis just gently squeezes his hand.
“Do you want to go to bed?”
Jack nods, and Dennis helps him up. He helps him out of his prosthesis once he’s sat on the bed. Jack lays on Dennis’s chest, and they fall asleep.

Chapter 19

Summary:

The aftermath of Jack’s flashback.

Notes:

Kind of just a short and sweet chapter to wrap up the last one :)

Chapter Text

Dennis lays back, playing with Jack’s hair as he sleeps. Dennis slept for a while, Jack is just obviously a lot more exhausted. He’s been awake for around an hour, but he refuses to leave Jack alone. He doesn’t want to risk him having another flashback or a nightmare alone.
He’s learned that he’s a lot more tolerant of sitting still when he’s with his boyfriends. Dennis tends to be pretty antsy, constantly needing to do something. That’s how he ends up scrolling on social media for hours, because he will be exhausted from work but needs to be doing something. Now he’s content just laying with Jack, running his fingers through his hair and listening to him breathe.
Dennis keeps doing that until Jack stirs, moving off his chest to lay beside him looking at him. Dennis turns on his side to look at him as well.
“Hey,” Jack says.
“Hi,” Dennis replies.
Jack smiles at him, tired but warm.
“Sorry if I freaked you out.”
Dennis furrows his brows, “you wouldn’t let me apologize for that.”
Jack chuckles, “no I guess I wouldn’t.”
Jack puts a hand on his waist, pulling him closer and kissing his forehead. Dennis leans into it.
“Are you feeling better?”
Jack exhales deeply, “yeah, definitely. Sometimes something just sets me off. There’s not usually much meaning to it, you know how it is.”
Dennis nods, his head resting near Jack’s neck. He does know. He’s never been to therapy so he doesn’t know for sure but he’s fairly certain he has dealt with post traumatic flashbacks in the past and they really don’t need much of a reason.
He lifts his head to look at Jack and takes his face in his hands.
“I love you.”
Jack smiles, “I love you too.”
They get up after a minute of just enjoying each other's warmth. Dennis doesn’t really know what to expect from Jack. He hasn’t been with him through one of these episodes, so he doesn’t really know how he feels after them. He also is a little worried he’ll say or do something that will trigger him again, because he would feel horrible about that. He definitely doesn’t expect him to be normal after that, obviously. There’s bound to be some turmoil that comes with it and he’s prepared for it.
Which is why he’s shocked that Jack does, in fact, seem to be acting pretty normal. Dennis wonders if he’s doing it just not to worry him, but he genuinely does seem fine. The only real difference is that he’s even clingier than usual, which really isn’t saying much.
They shower together, per Jack’s request, and teases Dennis about how long his hair is getting (despite what he says he actually loves it and Dennis knows it). Jack hugs him from behind while he’s brushing his teeth and stands close enough while they’re cooking so their arms always touch. It’s subtle, and definitely not a bad thing, but Dennis does notice it. Otherwise he is completely normal. While they’re eating dinner Jack notices Dennis staring with a quizzical look and laughs.
“You have a staring problem.”
“What? I can’t look at my boyfriend?” He retorts playfully.
Jack scratches his chin in fake thoughtfulness.
“No.”
They both laugh.
“You’ll fuel my ego too much,” he takes a bite of his food. “What’s on your mind though?”
He’s smiling, and joking, and he looks happy and honestly Dennis doesn’t want to mess that up by mentioning his episode. He bites his cheek, looking like he’s been caught. Jack already seems to know.
“I’m good, Den, I promise. I’m acting normal because I feel normal. Sometimes I just need to go through it.”
He smiles genuinely, and Dennis smiles and nods back.
They finish their dinner and hangout on the couch together for a while. Jack shows Dennis a few stupid tiktoks about brainrot (he finds them fucking hilarious and Dennis merely indulges him) and eventually they have to get back to work. They get ready and head out.

Chapter 20

Summary:

Dennis and Trinity get high and Dennis gets sick and misses his boyfriends the morning after.

Notes:

emetaphobia warning!! and obviously weed lol.

Chapter Text

Dennis bumps into Trinity after handover for his last shift of the week. He’s missed working with her, even if he can never tell her that. Since they’re on opposite shifts, they also haven’t seen each other outside of work despite living together.
“Man huckleberry the night shift has you looking fucked up,” she says playfully.
“At least I have an excuse to look fucked up,” he retorts.
She gasps in fake offense.
“Rude,” she pauses, “anyways. Since we haven’t seen each other all week and you spend basically every weekend with your lame ass boyfriends I’m kidnapping you tonight.”
He laughs, “you think you have that kind of authority over me?”
“Yes, Huckleberry I obviously do. You’ll want to though.”
He really does, and she knows he doesn’t actually need convincing, but he presses anyways.
“What makes you think that?”
She laughs, “you’re gonna have to be there to find out. Just go home and don’t leave again. Ok?”
He rolls his eyes, smiling, “we’ll see.”
She elbows him in the arm, knowing he will be there, then gets into her work.
Dennis finds Jack before leaving. Jack smiles at him.
“Are you coming with me?” He asks, maybe a little louder than he should around their colleagues.
Dennis shakes his head, “opposite. Trinity is kidnapping me, says I’m not allowed to come over tonight. She’s got a surprise for me”
Jack laughs, “she’s got you on a short leash.”
Dennis chuckles, “I’ll probably be over later this weekend.”
Jack smiles and nods, putting a hand on his shoulder and squeezing before leaving. Dennis leaves too, heading to the bus stop.
He sleeps for a while, then lounges on the couch scrolling on his phone and wondering what Trinity has planned. Eventually she gets home, and despite her long shift she looks awake and excited.
She doesn’t say anything when she comes in, just smiles and throws a clear plastic bag on the coffee table. Dennis picks it up and examines it. Inside are two pre-rolled joints.
“Oh shit,” he says, “how did you even get these? It’s illegal here.”
Trinity plops down on the couch next to him, still smiling but rolling her eyes.
“It’s decriminalized in Pittsburgh, the worst anyone is getting for having it is a ticket. Anyways, a girl I met at the club hooked me up.”
Dennis looks at her with his eyes narrowed.
“You’re meeting girls at the club again? What happened with Garcia?”
She groans, “I don’t want to talk about it. Just be thankful.”
He chuckles, “deal.”
They’re quick to get them out and lit. Dennis takes his first drag and immediately widens his eyes.
“Shit that’s strong.”
Trinity laughs, “you’ve done this before right huckleberry?”
“I mean yeah in college but we were broke so it was shit.”
They smoke together until their joints run out and just kind of sit for a bit while it really kicks in. Dennis lays spread out on the couch with his legs on top of Trinity’s who is leaning back on the other end of the couch. After a while he groans.
“It’s too fucking hot.”
He pulls his shirt off, too high to really think about it. He’s taped anyway so it doesn’t really matter.
Trinity giggles, “I think you’re feeling it.”
He squints at her. “No way,” he deadpans.
They both start giggling profusely. They’re definitely feeling it.
At some point they turn on the TV, flipping through amazon until Trinity puts on Wicked. Trinity already made Dennis watch it so it makes good background noise.
They’re quick to learn they’re both really giggly when they’re high, and whenever either one of them starts it sets the other off. You would think the movie is the funniest thing ever if you saw them watching it like this.
Dennis stands up during Defying Gravity and starts dancing, and Trinity is quick to snag his phone and record it. She catches him doing the riff and she laughs loudly.
“I’m sending this to your boyfriends.”
He just laughs, too out of it to be concerned about anything.
As time goes on they settle, getting more tired than giggly. Dennis lays across the couch again, this time with his head on Trinity’s lap.
“Dude Jack told me he loves me last week,” he says randomly.
“Woah,” she says, looking up at the ceiling rather than at Dennis. “Did you say it back?”
“Yeah. And I do love him,” he spaces out for a second, “I love Robby too.”
She looks down at him, eyebrows raised and nods.
“I’m still pissed at him for avoiding you.”
Dennis giggles, “he’s made up for it.”
Trinity throws her head back and groans.
“Ew. I don’t need to know about your sex life fuckleberry.”
He giggles again, “I wasn’t even talking about that it’s your fault for taking it that way.”
He pauses then speaks again.
“It’s amazing though.”
They both start laughing again, this time quieter, more tired.
“I had to listen to you and Garcia getting it on, you can handle knowing I’m having sex.”
“Ugh,” is all she says.
Eventually they settle down, and just fall asleep right where they are.
Dennis is woken up in the morning by extreme nausea, and wakes Trinity up rushing off the couch. Fortunately he makes it to the toilet before throwing up. Trinity stands leaning on the doorway.
“Aw man farmboy can’t handle it pot.”
Dennis looks up from the toilet and glares at her before he throws up again. Her face twists in disgust.
“That’s disgusting.”
He groans, “you could stop watching.”
She laughs a little, then sits against the bathroom wall. Dennis joins her once he’s done throwing up. He leans his head on her shoulder.
“I feel like shit,” he says.
She laughs, “yeah me too.”
“I think I’m still a little high.”
She laughs again, “same.”
They sit there for a minute before Dennis remembers the video Trinity sent to Jack and Robby and groans.
“Did you actually send that video last night?”
He doesn’t need to ask, he knows she did, but he does anyway.
She giggles, “I’m sure they loved it.”
Dennis stands up, room spinning as he does. He goes back to the living room and grabs his phone off the coffee table. He goes to his messages.
There’s the video, a few more stupid photos of him and Trinity, and responses from his boyfriends.

Robby :Looks like fun😉:
Jack :I think I know what the surprise was…:

He groans, embarrassed. Trinity joins him on the couch again, laughing.
“You’re an asshole,” he says.
“You love me.”

Dennis still feels high hours later, but his head is pounding and he’s thrown up two more times. What’s worse is that Trinity seems fine. He feels sick, and the high is starting to really make him miss his boyfriends. He calls Robby against his better judgment.
“Hey sweetheart, did you have a fun night?” Robby says when he picks up, laughing a little.
Dennis groans, “sorry for the video. I’m fucking embarrassed.”
Robby laughs again, “don’t be. We enjoyed it.”
Dennis sighs, “my head hurts and I keep throwing up and I miss you guys.”
“Would you like Jack to come get you? I would but I don’t trust you not to fall off the motorcycle.”
He perks up at the idea. He knows he should probably stay with Trinity a while longer, but he really misses them. He decides he will come back and hangout with her tomorrow once he’s feeling better.
“Yes please.”
“Alright he’ll be there soon.”
Then he hangs up. Dennis spends the next few minutes trying to clean himself up, clumsily changing, saying bye to Trinity and promising he will come back tomorrow, and going to sit on the curb. Jack is there not too long after he sits down outside. Jack laughs when he comes out to help Dennis stand up.
“Fun night?”
Dennis just groans a little and Jack laughs more, kissing his forehead and helping him in. He leans his head on the cold glass while Jack drives. Jack helps him out of the car when they get there, and when they go inside Robby is sitting at the kitchen counter drinking coffee. He smiles wide at them.
“Are you a big Wicked fan Dennis?”
Dennis groans again and hides his face on Jack's shoulder. Jack and Robby both laugh. It isn’t mean spirited, just playful and fond. Robby comes over and pries Dennis away from Jack, giving him a hug.
“I’m never smoking pot again,” Dennis says into the hug.
They both laugh again.
“Oh come on, you’ve never even tried it with us,” Jack says.
Dennis turns around, looking at him in shock.
“You guys-?”
Robby chuckles, “on occasion.”
He looks between them, trying to imagine what they’re like high.
“Wow,” is all he says.
After the interaction, Dennis decides to take a bath because he smells like weed and vomit. Robby and Jack insist he leaves the bathroom door open because he’s clearly still out of it.
It ends up being a good thing it’s open because Dennis falls asleep in the tub and they find out about an hour later when Jack goes to check on him. He gently brushes his curls back.
“Hey, Mouse, let’s get you to bed ok?”
Dennis blinks awake, shaking his head a little to gather his bearings. He chuckles, feeling a little more in touch with reality than the hour prior.
“Geez that stuff was strong.”
Jack laughs, helping him out of the tub and handing him a towel.
“Thanks,” Dennis says while he dries off and starts to get dressed. “For picking me up too.”
Jack smiles, “anytime.”
Once he’s dressed he goes into their bedroom where Robby is already laying on the bed reading. Dennis lays down next to him, and Jack next to Dennis. Jack goes on his phone while Dennis sleeps peacefully between them.

Chapter Text

Dennis spends the rest of his Saturday with them, and goes back to Trinity’s place on Sunday. And before he knows it it’s 7pm again and he’s back to his shift. Jack picks him up on the way to work, wanting to see him before they need to act professional together.
They arrive in the parking lot around 30 minutes early (as Jack planned) and make out in the car. It’s a stupid idea, seeing as they’re in the staff parking lot and anyone could see them and tell HR, but it’s a small enough risk that they ignore it. They straighten themselves out before they head into work.
Dennis spends a while with not much to do, working on some people from the waiting room before anything big comes in. Eventually a fall patient with a head laceration comes in and he ends up on it with Doctor Shen.
The patient is unconscious and needs to be intubated, and there’s not a ton they can do immediately except order tests. Dennis just stands at the side of the bed, waiting for an order.
Then out of nowhere his head gets a little foggy, and his balance is off. He tries to blink it away but every second it’s getting worse. He just stands there, stuck. Shen is saying something to him, and he doesn’t quite catch it. He looks up at him, and Shen looks concerned.
“You doing alright over there Whitaker?”
His body sways, and when he opens his mouth he stutters a little before any words come out.
“I uh, I think I’m gonna have a seizure.”
Everyone in the room freezes for a brief second. Shen nods slowly.
“Alright well, we are almost done here. Dr King, will you please help him to the breakroom- if you think you can make it there?”
Dennis nods, “yeah um, I think I’ve got a minute.”
Mel nods, discarding her gloves quickly and placing one hand on Dennis’s back and the other holding one of his hands. She stares at him, very concerned while they walk.
“So um, I know that you uh, have these sometimes you know. But are you like, ok?”
He just keeps looking forward, focusing on walking so he doesn’t collapse. They make it to the staffroom.
“Yeah, yeah. Just can you uh page Dr. A-abbot please. He um, told me to tell him.”
She raises her eyebrows and nods.
“Uh yes, just, are you good?” She asks as she gets him on the couch.
He nods slightly. She sits on the short table in front of the couch just watching him for a few moments. He lays on his back on the couch, and then the wave of sadness hits him. His eyebrows pinch together, and he bites his cheek as he tries not to start crying in front of his colleague. He knows she wouldn’t mind, and they’ve honestly become pretty good friends, he just finds it humiliating.
Dennis manages to force it down for a minute, just until Jack gets there. As soon as he sees him though tears stream down his face. He turns his head towards the back of the couch, hoping Mel doesn’t see him. She doesn’t, but Jack does.
“I have got this from here Dr King. Thank you.”
She opens her mouth like she’s going to say something, then closes it and nods before leaving. Jack comes to stand in front of Dennis.
“Hey Mouse, you’re going to have a seizure?”
Dennis just nods, crying harder now but trying to keep himself from sobbing. Jack gently pulls him so he is laying on his side facing him, then sits on the floor in front of his face. He holds his hand.
“It’s ok.”
It takes another minute for him to start seizing, and he keeps crying through it with Jack gently soothing him. The seizure doesn’t last long, and he stays conscious for it. He takes a deep breath when he comes out of it and squeezes Jack’s hand.
He starts to sit up, and Jack comes to help him. Once he’s up he rubs his face with his hands.
“Fuck.”
Jack sits on the coffee table in front of him and places a hand on his knee.
“Hey, breathe.”
Dennis lowers his hands and looks at him, his head starting to clear a bit. He blinks a few times, gathering his bearings, then exhales.
“Fuck ok. Ok. I’m ok.”
Jack is looking at him caringly, then his pager goes off. He takes a deep breath as he checks it.
“Dammit, ok, I need to go now, Den. But I want you to stay here until I get back. This should only take me a few minutes and then I’ll check you before you go back out there, ok?”
Dennis nods, Jack nods back, then leaves.
He does feel ok, his mind is no longer entirely lost in foggy nothingness but he still feels unreasonably sad and sort of out of it. He manages to get up without falling, and gets a water bottle from the staff fridge. He holds it tight in his hands, the cold grounding him as he sits back down.
Jack returns in 12 minutes. He performs a few simple cognitive tests (having him follow his finger, answer some questions, and squeeze his hands) before determining that he is technically ok to go back on the floor.
“You can take as much time as you need though,” is what Jack ends with.
Dennis nods, “I think I’m just gonna take like, five more minutes.”
Jack nods, and glances behind him before kissing Dennis. Dennis chuckles.
“Robby would be pissed if he knew you did that.”
Jack laughs, “don’t snitch on me.”
Then he gets up and leaves. Dennis sits for five more minutes, then returns to the pitt.

Dennis is dragging when he does return to his shift, working slower than he normally does. He’s doing ok, just not up to his usual standard. He still feels odd, his brain is still foggy and his body is tired. While he’s filling out a chart he writes the incorrect dosage down and thankfully Mel notices.
“I think you mean 10 mg, right? Because 100 would probably have killed her?” She’s kind about it, and a little awkward as usual.
Dennis blinks at the screen.
“Oh shoot, yeah um, yeah you’re right.”
She knits her eyebrows together and looks up at him through them.
“You don’t usually make mistakes like that. Are you feeling alright? I mean, I know we all have off nights, it's just, maybe your seizure is affecting you?”
He exhales, looking at his chart and shaking his head.
“No, no I’m ok Mel. I’ll be ok.”
She still looks concerned, but she says ok and leaves him to finish his chart. He’s still working through charts when he feels Jack’s hands on his shoulders.
“Hey, kid, will you come with me for a minute?”
Dennis glances back at his chart then back to Jack before responding.
“Uh yeah, sure.”
Jack keeps one hand on his shoulder and brings him to a storage closet to talk privately.
“So, I have a few staff members who seem concerned about you tonight.”
Dennis backs up a little and crosses his arms over his chest in defense.
“No I’m fine,” he shakes his head as he says it.
Jack sighs.
“Dennis, listen, I heard that you made a dosage error on a chart and-,” Dennis cuts him off.
“I caught it before I finished-,” Jack cuts back in.
“With the help of another resident. And as I was saying, while this was just a charting error it is a liability to have you working with patients if you’re not in a clear headspace.”
He scoffs, “it was a minor mistake, an extra zero on a dosage, basically just a typing error.”
“And if it was just that I would agree with you but I’ve been watching you hesitate all night since your seizure.”
Dennis keeps his arms crossed, looking at Jack frustrated.
“Clock out for tonight. Get some rest, Robby is coming to get you.”
“What? Jack, I'm fine, seriously. I’ve only got like 2 more hours left of my shift.”
He looks angry now, backing away even more. Jack stays calm.
“I’m not giving you a choice Dennis. You can try again tonight.”
He huffs, and storms off. It’s not like he doesn’t know he’s right, he just doesn’t want to admit it. He’s still trying to convince himself that the seizures don’t affect him as much as they do, and being told that he’s being affected pisses him off. He angrily clocks out and goes to sit on a bench out front of the ER.
Dennis ends up falling asleep, and Robby gently shakes him awake.
“Hey kid let’s get you home.”
Dennis groans a little as Robby helps him stand up.
“I can do it myself Robby.”
Robby chuckles, “Jack said you were in a bad mood. I was kind of hoping you would have calmed down by the time I got here.”
Robby keeps a hand on his shoulder while they walk to Robby’s motorcycle.
“I’m being treated like a kid who needs to be babysat. Of course I’m pissed off.”
Robby just sighs, handing Dennis his helmet before getting on the bike. They don’t say anything else. Robby keeps a hand on Dennis’s wrapped around him for most of the drive, nervous that he might doze off again and lose his grip. They get home and Dennis is silent. He struggles getting off the motorcycle because his balance is off and Robby just lets him, knowing he’ll be upset if he tries to help. He starts heading to the bedroom when Robby stops him.
“Couch, I need to keep an eye on you. I’m going in an hour later so Jack is here when I leave.”
He just stares at him, clearly pissed off. Robby presses his lips together, raises his eyebrows, and shrugs.
“You can be as angry as you want, just be angry on the couch.”
Dennis lays on the couch with a grumble, but he is immediately relieved to be laying down. He hadn’t really realized it but his legs are a little shaky and his brain feels like it’s in water. Robby keeps an eye on him while he makes coffee.
After about 10 minutes he knows he’s going to seize again. His vision is getting a little blurry and his face is twitching, and suddenly all he wants is Robby. All his anger is gone, replaced with a strong impending doom. He tries to speak but all he can get out is part of a whine before he starts seizing.
“You okay over there?” Robby asks while starting to walk over from the kitchen, quickly muttering curses and hurrying when he sees Dennis shaking.
He’s already on his side, so Robby just stands in front of him with a hand gently placed on his side. He is still conscious, and it slows to a stop after a minute. He blinks himself out of it, letting out a pained noise. Robby pets his head.
“It’s ok, just breathe.”
He settles after a minute, brain actually clearing and now feeling extremely guilty.
“Fuck Robby I was such an asshole.”
Robby breathes out a laugh, still staring at him with concern. He puts a hand on top of Dennis’s.
“You’re good, kid. I’m not mad at you, it was the seizure talking.”
Dennis sighs and presses his forehead to their hands.
“Maybe you should be.”
Robby just kisses his head.
“Come on, let’s go to bed. I'll lay with you for a bit, I have time.”
“You really don’t have to,” he protests while Robby helps him up.
Robby laughs, “there’s worse ways I could be spending my morning than laying down with my boyfriend.”
They’re laying on the bed, Robby wrapped around his back, and now Dennis is feeling overwhelmed because he was such a dick to him and he’s being so nice still. His chest gets tight as it fills with appreciation. He starts to tear up, and turns to face Robby. Robby smiles at him warmly.
“I love you,” Dennis starts, “I don’t expect you to say it back and I know you might be mad at me even if you’re not showing it and-,” Robby cuts him off.
“Den,” he makes sure he’s looking, “I love you too.”
He wipes a tear that’s fallen down Dennis’s cheek and kisses him softly. Dennis smiles at him, tired but loving.
They lay there for about an hour before Robby needs to get ready, and about 20 minutes after Robby got up Jack joins him in bed. Jack lays down in front of him and immediately wraps his arms around him.
“Hey Mouse, you feeling better?”
Dennis nods, nestling his head into his chest.
“I’m sorry for being a dick earlier.”
Jack hums, “it’s frustrating, I get it. And I’m sorry I had to bench you but you understand why right?”
Dennis sighs, “yeah. I definitely shouldn’t have been working with patients. You were just looking out for me and them. It’s just,” he pauses, “hard to hear.”
Jack nods slowly then kisses his head.
“Let’s get some sleep.”
They’re both asleep in minutes, thoroughly wrapped in each other’s arms.

Chapter Text

Jack is having a shitty shift. It starts with a patient who was improperly intubated in the field, causing a pneumothorax, and just keeps coming. He’s moving from case to case, trying to stay caught up but new traumas just keep coming in and his stump is aching from rubbing on his prosthesis.
It’s around 3am when a new trauma gets brought in which ends up being one of his buddies in the Pittsburgh SWAT physician team. It’s bad, several entry gunshot wounds with no exits. They work on him for about an hour, but he dies anyway.
Jack had stopped working on the team a few months back (the hours became too much with his night shifts) but knew the guy pretty well, knew he had a wife and daughter, knew he had been sober for 11 years, and knew he was also a veteran. Jack also knows he can’t blame himself for his death, and he doesn’t, but it still hurts him like hell. Dennis catches him for a moment after they’ve finished up before another trauma gets there.
“Hey, you uh, are you doing ok? Ok to keep going?”
Jack takes a deep breath, “yeah. Shit happens all the time, fucking sucks but can’t let it affect work.”
Dennis just nods, still staring at him with his eyebrows pinched together.
The rest of the shift is just about as shitty, and the night shift ends up having to stay an extra hour after the fact to get fully caught up. Dennis catches Robby sometimes during that hour.
“One of the guys from Jack’s old SWAT team came in. Veteran as well. Multiple GSWs, ended up dying in trauma. Seemed like Jack knew him,” he pauses to let Robby process it. “I think he would do good to see you before he heads home.”
Robby sighs and nods, “ok. I’ll find him, you gonna go home with him?”
Dennis exhales, nodding as he thinks for a second.
“Yeah I think so.”
Robby nods, “sounds good. See you later.”
He squeezes his shoulder and heads off. He finds Jack sitting in the staff room a little while later once things have calmed down. He sits across from him.
“Rough night brother?”
Jack scoffs, rubbing his hand over his face.
“Always is.”
Robby clicks his tongue, “Whitaker said you one of your old SWAT guys came in. You doing alright?”
Jack puts his hands on the table and breathes out a laugh.
“I think we’re a little past calling him Whitaker.”
Robby laughs, “you’re avoiding the question.”
There’s a pause.
Jack sighs, “he was a good guy. Did my part, did everything I could, not my fault he died it just sucks.”
“Always does.”
They sit in silence for a beat, then Robby moves to get up and Jack does too.
“You know I’m here. And I’m sending the kid home with you so you don’t get sidetracked and end up on the roof,” Robby jokes.
Jack laughs, “Roger that.”
Robby moves to hug him, wrapping his arms around his neck and quickly kissing his cheek. Jack hugs back around his waist.
“Love you,” Robby says.
“Love you too.”
Then Robby returns to work and Jack clocks out. Dennis is waiting for him outside.
“Did uh, Robby get to talk to you?”
“About my suicide watch? Yeah,” he jokes.
Dennis looks at him, eyes big with concern. Jack smiles tiredly.
“It’s a joke Mouse,” he walks over and slings an arm around his shoulders, “let’s go.”

They go straight to their room when they get home, too tired to worry about eating now.
“Fuck,” Jack sighs when he slides off his prosthesis.
Dennis stands next to him and tilts his head, looking at the stump.
“Sore?”
Jack laughs, “always.”
Dennis sits down next to him and gestures for him to bring his leg up.
“Let me see.”
Jack squints at him, smiling, and does as he’s told. He looks it over a little before starting to massage it. Jack sits back leaning on his hands and smiles fondly at him.
“You know what you’re doing.”
“Yeah I asked Robby a little while ago how to do it properly since he’s always doing it,” he looks over at Jack. “Figured it might be good to learn. Know it bothers you, want to be able to help how I can.”
Jack just keeps smiling at him with warm appreciation in his chest. Dennis keeps going for a while before Jack pulls his arm for him to come closer. He slides his stump down and hugs Dennis tight.
“Thanks Mouse.”
Dennis hums, hugging him back. They finish up getting out of their work clothes after a minute and go to bed together.

Chapter Text

The rest of the week is about as chaotic. It’s Dennis’s last week of night shifts for a bit so it feels like some kind of shitty sendoff. He’s on his last shift and it is dragging on like crazy. He doesn’t get a chance for a break, forcing down a protein bar between traumas, and is constantly on his feet. He stays an extra 2 hours finishing up with his patients and takes the bus home. Jack probably would have brought him to his and Robby’s house but Dennis is so tired he doesn’t even think to ask.
He eats an avocado then crashes into his bed, not waking up again until 6pm. When he checks his phone he realizes he missed a call from Jack at 11am. He calls back.
“Hey sorry I crashed as soon as I got home. Is something up?”
“Nope I just missed having you here today, wondering if you want to come hangout tonight?”
“Oh, yeah! Definitely. I would have come home with you earlier honestly I just was exhausted and forgot to ask.”
Jack laughs on the other end.
“I should mention, Robby and I have some special plans tonight and we are hoping you will join us but if you don’t want to we understand.”
Dennis gives a confused look despite Jack being unable to see him.
“What do you have planned?”
“We have some marijuana. Now, I know you said you would never do it again, but for the record I would like to hear you sing again.”
Dennis scoffs, “so you want to see me embarrass myself again?”
“Precisely,” Jack says, smiling audibly.
Dennis considers it for a moment, “I got pretty sick last time.”
“And I’m assuming you took way too much which wouldn’t be an issue here. Robby and I are pretty good at dosing.”
Dennis laughs, “dosing?”
Jack chuckles, “well it is a medicinal herb.”
Dennis laughs again, “yeah, sure, why not. I don’t work until Monday.”
“Great. Would you like a ride?”
Dennis thinks, “nah. I’ve got some chores around the house first. I’ll catch the bus around 7:30.”
“Alright, I’ll see you later. Love you.”
“Love you too, bye.”
He hangs up and gets up to start his housework. Trinity ends up calling him about an hour later.
“Hey Huckleberry, any chance you’re hanging out with your DILFs tonight?”
Dennis scoffs, a little stunned.
“What the hell did you just call them?”
“You know, your questionable older boyfriends-,” he cuts her off.
“Yeah I know who you’re talking about,” he pauses, “and yeah I’m going over there at 7:30. Should be gone before you even get back, why? You want me out all of a sudden?”
“Of course I do,” she laughs, “no but I’m having Yolanda over tonight and I’m pretty sure you don’t want to hear that again.”
Dennis groans, “I thought you were done with her.”
“Fuck off. It’s been a long week. I just need to get laid.”
Dennis laughs shallowly, “alright but I’m saying I told you so if you’re bitching about her avoiding you next week.”
“Yeah yeah, whatever man. I’ve gotta go, bye.”
And she hangs up. Dennis makes a face, thinking about the last time he was home when Garcia was over. Even his earbuds on full blast didn’t block out the sound.
“Gross,” he whispers to himself before returning to his chores.

He finishes up around 7, and decides to shower and change before he leaves. He wears brown sweatpants and a green cropped t-shirt he stole from Trinity. He’s been wearing a lot more cropped shirts, liking the way his boyfriends look at him when he does. Their not so subtle staring has helped a lot with his confidence. He throws on a crewneck he stole from Robby over top before he leaves for the bus ride, not wanting to deal with weird looks from strangers. He removes it right after the ride.
Dennis knocks on their door, and Jack answers. Jack looks him over, smiling.
“You look nice.”
Dennis smiles back, “thanks.”
Robby is sitting on the couch when he comes inside, with a small assortment of things on the coffee table in front of him. Dennis joins him on the couch and Jack sits down across from them in the lounge chair. He takes a better look at what’s on the table. It’s nothing weird, just a small bag of dried pot leaves, a pipe, a lighter, and a small bag of edible gummies.
“You smoke, right Den?” Robby asks.
Dennis nods, “definitely can’t take edibles.”
Jack laughs, “those are mine. I don’t smoke. I’ve tried convincing Micheal not to either but he’s stubborn.”
Robby side eyes him then looks back to Dennis.
“Have you ever used a pipe before?”
He shakes his head.
“Alright I’ll show you how,” he says, smiling and picking up what he needs.
It’s simple, not much different than smoking a cigarette, but Dennis finds Robby doing it 100 times hotter than when he lights a cigarette. He settles into the couch as he breathes it in, smiling and letting the calm take over his body. Then he offers it to Dennis, who takes it carefully. He breathes in a little, scared to take in a lot and get sick again. He feels pleasantly warm as he exhales. In the meantime, Jack takes a few of his gummies.
They keep smoking for a while, Dennis leaning back on Robby on the couch and Jack sitting calmly across the room just watching. Dennis feels pleasantly fuzzy around the edges the next time Robby speaks.
“You wanna try something Dennis?”
He turns his head just enough to look at him, “yeah sure. What?”
“Agreeing before you even know what it is you must really trust me,” Robby says, chuckling. “Just sit up a little bit and face me.”
Dennis does as he’s told, looking at Robby with trust in his eyes.
“I’m gonna take a hit, then I’m gonna breathe it into your mouth and you’re gonna hold it while we kiss. Sounds okay?”
Dennis nods quickly, excitement building at the idea. Jack and Robby both laugh a little. He watches Robby inhale the smoke, opening his mouth willingly as Robby leans in and exhales. He holds the smoke in his mouth while they kiss, feeling like it fills his whole head and getting lost in the kiss and the feeling. He coughs a little when Robby pulls away, smoke coming out of his nose and mouth.
“Shit that was hot,” he says in awe.
Jack and Robby laugh again.
“Yeah. I haven’t gotten to do that since someone,” he looks over at Jack, “stopped smoking.”
Jack laughs softly, “sorry for not wanting lung cancer.”
Dennis smiles, feeling the fondness in their bickering. He lays back with his head in Robby’s lap, just enjoying the warmth of his boyfriend and the high. He plays with his fingers a little.
“Have you guys ever had sex while high?” He asks absentmindedly.
Robby’s laugh is deep in his chest and vibrates Dennis’s whole body. He likes it.
“Pretty bold question.”
He shrugs, “blame the weed.”
He laughs again, Jack laughing as well and coming to join them on the couch.
“Yeah a few times,” Jack says as he moves Dennis’s legs so he can sit, placing them on his lap once he’s comfortable.
Dennis just sits there staring at Jack for a minute with raised eyebrows, imagining it.
“Fuck,” he whispers.
They laugh again.
“You should’ve asked before we started,” Jack says, “we could’ve talked about preemptive consent.”
Dennis’s mouth hangs open a little bit.
“No wait. Wait, I'm not even that high.”
Robby laughs behind him, “too high to properly consent. All of us are. Next time.”
Dennis huffs, then all three of them start laughing.
It’s a lot calmer than his night with Trin, but most nights they spend together are calmer than the nights he spends with her. Dennis feels pretty blissed out, both his boyfriends getting a little more handsy with him through their high (which is saying something considering how handsy they normally are). It’s nothing all that different, just Jack rubbing his thighs a little and Robby playing with his hair and running a hand over his waist. The difference is their hands have stayed moving around on his body since they were placed there half an hour ago and it’s driving him a little crazy.
“I’m gonna pop a boner if you guys keep touching me like that.”
They all laugh again. Jack grabs one of his hands and pulls him so he’s on his lap, their faces close.
“You always have a boner,” Jack jokes before kissing him.
Dennis can vaguely hear Robby laughing in the background and everything feels so pleasantly fuzzy as Jack kisses him. At some point Robby joins them, and Dennis can’t really tell who is who so he just enjoys the lips being pressed on his and the hands gently pulling him closer.
They makeout for a little while, eventually slowing down and pulling away, tired from the weed and their shifts. They all begin helping each other off the couch (Dennis is definitely higher than the two of them, but they’re all still a little wobbly). They tumble into bed together, falling asleep in an odd clump.

Chapter Text

Dennis wakes up alone the next morning and finds Jack and Robby in the kitchen. Robby is making breakfast while Jack stands against the counter drinking coffee and scrolling on his phone. Jack is the first to notice him.
“Morning Mouse, you sleep okay?” He asks, smiling.
“Slept great, totally crashed,” he says while walking over and standing in front of Jack.
He wraps his arms around Jack’s waist and leans his head against his chest. Jack places his phone down, one hand being placed on Dennis’s head and the other wrapping around his neck. Jack hums happily and kisses his head.
“I think we all did,” Robby says, looking at them and smiling.
“We needed it after last week,” Jack responds while releasing Dennis.
Dennis moves to hug around Robby’s back. He stops what he’s doing to turn around and hug Dennis back.
“Hey sweetheart,” Robby says in the deep, sleep ridden voice that Dennis loves.
He looks up at him and smiles, Robby kisses him in response. He lets him go back to cooking, getting a cup of coffee and joining Jack standing at the counter. Dennis puts his chin on Jack’s shoulder, watching videos with him as he scrolls. Robby finishes breakfast in a few minutes, and Jack and Dennis plate and serve it together.
“You want eggs Den?” Jack asks.
Dennis scrunches his face, “ew.”
Robby chuckles, “he never does Hon.”
Jack shrugs, “always worth asking.”
Dennis laughs while bringing Robby’s plate to the table.
“Ok well I’m officially saying the answer will always be no.”
Jack laughs in return, “is there a reason for that?”
Dennis returns to take his and Jack’s plate to the table.
“I can’t do chicken products. I used to get super attached to the chickens on the farm til my dad made me watch him slaughter them. Haven’t eaten chicken or eggs since.”
Jack and Robby just kind of stare at him for a minute, mouths hanging slightly open. Dennis laughs.
“Relax, it doesn’t bother me anymore. I just think it’s gross now.”
Jack laughs as well, “I guess I won’t ask again.”
The three of them laugh and all start eating. Jack goes to shower after breakfast and Robby and Dennis move to the couch. Robby reads and Dennis scrolls on tiktok but Dennis gets bored pretty fast. He moves closer to Robby, taking his book and placing it face down on the table before straddling his lap. Robby laughs.
“I was reading that.”
Dennis shrugs, leaning in to kiss him. Robby quickly slides off his reading glasses, tossing them on the table and putting his hands on Dennis’s waist. Dennis pulls back after a minute, running his hands through Robby’s hair.
“You want something Whitaker?” Robby asks, looking at him fondly.
Dennis smiles, pinching his eyebrows together.
“Haven’t decided yet Robinavitch.”
They both giggle, and Dennis leans in again. They’re kissing for a bit, Robby’s hands wandering under Dennis’s shirt and Dennis’s coming up to grab at Robby’s hair. Jack comes back to them full on making out and Dennis grinding down slightly on Robby’s thigh.
“Wow. Without me? Rude,” he says, fake offended.
Jack walks up, using his crutch for support, and stands behind Dennis. His free hand starts to trail down Dennis’s chest. Dennis leans his head back, looking up at Jack and sticking his tongue out between his teeth.
“Shouldn’t have left.”
Jack looks at Robby, “are you hearing this?”
Robby shrugs, smiling, “he’s got a point.”
He scoffs in fake shock, before kissing Dennis. His hand comes up under his shirt, trailing up until he reaches his nipple then pressing down. Dennis breaks the kiss to moan. Jack smirks.
“You sound a lot less cocky now.”
Dennis breathes shallowly, Jack’s hand still brushing over his nipple and Robby’s firmly planted on his hips. His thighs squeeze around Robby’s.
“Can we go to bed?”
Jack chuckles, “do you think you deserve that?”
Dennis laughs breathily, “maybe not.”
Jack looks over at Robby.
“What do you think Mike?”
Robby looks between him and Dennis. Dennis looks pliable, ready to take whatever they’re willing to give.
“Yeah I think he deserves it.”
“Alright, get up Mouse.”
Dennis is quick to follow the instruction and help Robby up as well.

Their positions shift once they’re in the room. Jack sits on the bed with his back against the headboard, not wanting to bother with his crutches or prosthetic. Dennis is on his lap straddling him like he was with Robby, and Robby is behind Dennis like Jack was before. Robby tugs Dennis’s crop top off before he goes to kiss Jack, running his hands and mouth over the newly exposed skin. Jack’s hands return to his chest, kneading at the flesh and pulling little noises from him while they kiss. Jack groans when Dennis grinds down a little harder on his dick.
At some point Jack and Robby lose their shirts, and Dennis loves the way their skin feels pressed against both sides of his body. He’s distracted by it, and he doesn’t notice Robby’s hand has slipped into his pants until a finger dips inside of him. He gasps in surprise. Jack kisses and bites at his neck.
“Good boy,” Jack says.
It makes Dennis moan louder and push down on Robby’s fingers. They continue like that for a minute, Robby eventually slipping another finger into Dennis and fucking him open. Dennis whines when the fingers leave him and Jack pulls away.
“Do you want to ride me sweetheart?” Jack offers.
Dennis nods quickly, backing off his lap to let him slide his shorts off. Robby and Dennis both get off the bed to take their own pants off, and when they return Robby scooches in behind Jack and starts kissing and touching him. Dennis watches for a second on Jack’s lap, enjoying the show, before stroking Jack’s dick a little and lining himself up. Jack moans into Robby’s mouth at the contact.
He sinks down slowly, adjusting, and all three of them groan when he bottoms out. He breathes for a minute while he properly adjusts and Robby’s hands reach out to touch both of them.
Once he starts moving he moves fast, holding Jack’s shoulders for leverage and Jack thrusting up to meet him. Robby and Jack kiss, sloppy and loud while Dennis fucks himself on Jack’s dick. Jack breaks the kiss to say something.
“Don’t get too tired baby, Robby is gonna fuck you after we’re done.”
He moans loud at the thought. Dennis feels hands all over him and after a while one of Jack’s presses down firmly on his stomach, making both of them moan louder. Dennis cums first, hips stuttering as he fucks himself through it and Jack finishing soon after while thrusting into him.
He only has a minute to recover before Jack helps him off and lays him down on his back with his head on his lap and Robby gets in front of him, sliding on a condom. They’ve talked about it, and while Jack is ok with fucking him without one Robby just orefers to be on the safe side.
He smiles tiredly at Robby, spreading his legs to let him come between them. Robby takes the invitation, sliding his dick in slowly. They both groan as he does.
There’s always a big difference between Jack and Robby fucking him. Robby moves slowly and deliberately while Jack is much faster. It’s very different but he loves the feeling of both. Now he enjoys the slow drag of Robby’s dick inside of him after the pace he set with Jack. It has him squirming, both over and understimulated and overstimulated. Eventually the pace quickens, Jack kissing and grabbing at him while Robby’s fingers bruise his hips. He really loves all the marks his boyfriends leave on him.
Eventually Robby finishes, leaning down to kiss Dennis while he does. He kisses his forehead while he pulls out and moves to get stuff to clean up. Dennis groans a little, and Jack runs his fingers through his hair to soothe him. Robby cleans them all up quickly and joins them in bed, finding Dennis now wrapped around Jack’s back. He comes behind Dennis and puts an arm over both of them, pulling them close.

Chapter Text

Dennis wakes up early feeling like shit on Monday morning. He wakes up feeling cold, having gone home yesterday and not having Robby wrapped around him. There’s an ache low in his stomach and his head hurts. He also feels irrationally sad and pissed off and he really can’t figure out why. He lays in bed for a while, trying to get over it until his alarm goes off and he inevitably can’t shake it.
He goes to take a shower and has to turn the light off because looking at his body right now is making him nauseous. Trin gives him her usual line (“you look like shit”) and he just flips her off, not trusting whatever will come out of his mouth not to be nasty and cruel.
The drive is quiet, Dennis hunched over with his arms crossed over his stomach and Trinity just assuming he’s too tired to converse. He goes into work quickly, getting away from her fast before she tries to talk to him. He manages to avoid both his boyfriends at handover, because even though he really does want to see them he can’t handle it right now.
He manages the first three hours ok, inevitably ending up with Robby on a trauma but it’s fine because he is able to bury himself in the work. His body still is aching in weird places but he ignores it because he needs to work. He slips off to the bathroom after the trauma and that’s when things start to make sense.
He goes pee and when he goes to wipe he notices blood. There’s a split second he panics that something is seriously wrong because he hasn’t had his period in about 3 years and he forgot his body is capable of that, but the realization that it is his period is honestly worse. He groans, realizing there’s blood in his boxers already and he doesn’t have a tampon. He’s in the gender neutral staff bathroom, which probably really should have tampons but it doesn’t. He reluctantly calls Trinity who picks up after a few rings.
“What do you want, Huckleberry? I’m charting.”
“Can you bring me a tampon? I’m in the staffroom bathroom.”
There’s a beat of silence.
“Ah shit that fucking sucks. Yeah I’ll be right there.”
“Thanks.”
He hangs up. He does his best to wipe the blood from his underwear, and thankfully it hasn’t reached his scrub pants yet so he doesn’t need to worry about it. Trinity knocks on the door and he quickly pulls his pants back on and opens it slightly to take the tampon she brought.
He puts it in, wincing a little at the sensation, and washes up. When he comes out, Trinity is still standing there.
“You good?”
Dennis sighs, “no this fucking sucks.”
She chuckles, “yeah asshole, remember this next time I’m bitching about my period.”
Dennis laughs halfheartedly and they both return to work. He snags another few tampons from the supply room for later, and goes back to treating patients.
He’s grateful to sit down for his charting, stealing Robby’s desk as usual. Part of him wants to steal the sweatshirt laying on the back of his chair, but knows he can’t because that would definitely clue some people in on their relationship. He’s hunched over on himself, typing away when he feels a hand on his shoulder. Most days he would be happy to see Robby during his charting, today it feels overwhelming. Robby leans down to his level, looking at the chart he’s working on.
“How’s it going?”
Dennis shrugs, still looking at the computer.
“Fine.”
Robby turns his head to look at him, he looks back, trying not to reveal how he’s feeling by his expression. Robby looks concerned anyway.
“You’re looking a little pale. Why don’t you go take a break and eat something?”
He frames it as a question but Dennis knows it’s not. He doesn’t argue, just nods and closes out his chart before standing up. Robby still looks concerned but he leaves before he can say anything else.
After his break, there’s another trauma. He ends up doing chest compression and he feels dizzy afterwards from the pain in his stomach.
He feels a lot worse at the end of his shift, and he’s quick to duck out before Robby can find him and question him. Trinity finds him standing outside her car and she looks a little surprised.
“I figured you would be going home with Robby,” she says as they get in the car.
Dennis groans, “I don’t really want to explain this to him.”
“You’re gonna have to. You can’t avoid him and Jack for a week, you literally work together.”
He sighs, “I know. Just not tonight.”
She nods and starts driving. He gets a message from Robby on the way home.

Robby :Hey you left before I got the chance to say bye. You feeling alright?:

Dennis takes a second before responding.

Dennis :Yeah i’m fine, just tired 🙂:

Then he turns off his phone.
He goes straight to bed once they get home and just lies there until he actually can fall asleep.

He isn’t feeling any better the next day, but he drags himself to work anyways. He tries to eat something but it just makes him nauseous so he gives up.
Dennis knows this isn’t anything unusual. He had a period for 8 years and knows what it does to him, he just isn’t used to it anymore. He knows it isn’t any worse than it used to be; he just doesn’t really know how to ignore it anymore. The high movement of his job really isn’t helping either. He’s also frequently going to the bathroom because the hospital tampons are shit.
Still, he makes it to the end of his shift. He’s been avoiding Robby as much as possible, but Robby must have noticed because he is already standing at Dennis’s locker when he gets there.
“Hey,” Robby says, looking concerned.
“Hi.”
Robby moves out of the way so Dennis can get his things from his locker, then he places a hand on his shoulder and guides him outside so they can talk away from the rest of the staff.
“Will you come home with me tonight?”
He really considers saying no, and he probably could if he actually wanted to, but he knows that will just make Robby more worried. He agrees and Robby smiles at him. He climbs on Robby’s bike with him and enjoys the closeness after barely seeing him the past two days.
Robby offers him food when they get home and he declines. He really shouldn’t decline, and Robby’s look of concern reminds him he’s barely eaten since yesterday morning, but he can’t do it right now. He goes to lay down instead. Robby joins him after a little bit, still looking worried.
He lays down behind Dennis and wraps an arm around his stomach. Dennis winces when he touches his stomach.
“Hey, are you ok?”
He rolls Dennis on his back so he can get a better look at him.
“Is something wrong with your stomach?”
He goes to feel Dennis’s stomach but he stops him.
“I’m fine, it’s not a big deal.”
Robby looks worried.
“Denny come on, just let me check it. You’ve been acting weird since yesterday, is this why?”
Dennis groans, his eyes watering, “no- fuck ok.”
He takes a deep breath before he speaks again.
“I’m on my period, and it hurts, and I feel like shit, and it’s making me hate my body which really fucking sucks because I was just getting over my last round of dysphoria.”
He rushes through it, a little embarrassed and scared Robby will find him as disgusting as he finds himself. He doesn’t realize he’s started crying until Robby wipes a tear from his cheek and looks at him sympathetically. Robby wraps him up in a hug and he buries his head in his chest.
“I’m sorry for avoiding you, I just-,” he sighs, “just got scared you might think I’m gross or something.
Robby pulls him back a little so he can look at him.
“Sweetheart, we work in an emergency room. I think I’d be in trouble if a period grossed me out.”
Dennis laughs a little, “true.”
Robby lays on his back and Dennis lays down on his chest while Robby holds him tight and pets his head.
“So I’m assuming this doesn’t happen regularly?”
Dennis scoffs, “hasn’t happened in 3 fucking years. I don’t know why it’s happening now.”
Robby hums, “you should check in with your endocrinologist.”
“I don’t have one,” Dennis answers quietly.
Robby stills, getting serious.
“You really need one Den. You should be checking in on your hormone levels regularly.”
Dennis sighs, “yeah I know that.”
“How are you getting your testosterone then?”
“I go through a website. I technically had to have a couple telehealth appointments with their specialists but I haven’t seen them since I started T. I get my norethindrone through them as well. I pay for it and they send it.” He sighs again, “I can barely afford the testosterone so seeing an actual endocrinologist has been out of the question.”
Robby exhales deeply, “ok, well, now that you work at PTMC you have health coverage through them. We can get you booked in with a specialist in the hospital and it’ll be covered. Your prescriptions should be covered too.”
Dennis is a little shocked, “shit I didn’t think about that.”
Robby kisses his head, “we can sort it out tomorrow.”
They lay there for a while before Robby convinces Dennis to try and eat something. He manages a plate of pasta before they return to bed.

Dennis wakes up early to his legs covered in blood the next morning. He quietly groans as he slips out of bed, trying to keep it contained to his body and boxer. He goes to take a shower, leaving the door open a crack so if Robby wakes up he hears the water running and doesn’t worry about where he is. He sits on the shower floor, letting the water run over his face and body. He watches the blood tinted water run down the drain in disgust.
It’s funny, because Robby is right that they work in an ER and deal with grosser things on a daily basis. Hell, he got pissed on his first day working there and that definitely was more disgusting than anything happening with his body right now. Dennis just hates it because this is his body doing something that he perceives it isn’t supposed to. He ends up tilting his head back out of the shower stream, looking at the ceiling to avoid looking at the blood or his body. He loses track of time, and before he realizes it Robby is awake and gently knocking on the door to check on him. He stands and turns off the water.
“You can come in,” he says, exiting the shower and wrapping a towel around his shoulders.
Robby smiles at him with concern in his eyes.
“You okay?”
Dennis sighs, “yeah I just bled through the shitty hospital tampons and had to wash off.”
Robby hums and steps closer, Dennis takes the opportunity to rest his forehead on his chest. He places a hand on Dennis’s hair.
“Jack’s going shopping today, I can ask him to get you some better ones if you’d like?”
Dennis takes a moment to consider it, looking up and meeting Robby’s eyes.
“No, I'll ask him. I should probably talk to him about… all this anyways.”
Robby nods and kisses his forehead.
“Sorry if I got blood on the sheets.”
Robby shakes his head, “don’t worry about it.”

They get ready for the day in a comfortable quiet. Dennis checks the sheets anyway and fortunately he didn’t bleed onto them. He grabs a poptart and they head out.
The ED is relatively quiet, and after handover Dennis is able to pull Jack aside into an empty room to talk to him. Jack gives him a hug and kiss once the door is closed.
“I miss you being on nights.”
Dennis chuckles, “It’s been two days.”
“Still,” Jack smiles. “Is there a reason you wanted to talk?”
“Robby said you were going to the store today?”
“Mhm, did you need something?”
Dennis sighs, immediately retracting in on himself a little. Jack’s face goes concerned. He places his hands on Dennis’s upper arms and gently rubs them with his thumbs. Dennis takes a deep breath.
“I got my period for the first time in like three years on Monday and I’ve been using the shitty hospital tampons but I keep bleeding through them.” He meets Jack’s eyes cautiously, scared of his reaction. “Could you pick up some better ones?”
Jack nods, “of course. Any brand preference?”
Dennis shakes his head. Jack hugs him again, kissing his temple.
“I’m here if you need anything else.”
He feels a little stupid for being so worried, because Jack still looks at him with the same fond expression he always does. Dennis smiles a little and nods.
“Thanks.”
Jack kisses him one more time, then they leave the quiet seclusion and return to the chaos of the pitt.
Despite how his morning started, Dennis is feeling better today. The ache in his stomach is minor, and after talking to his boyfriends he feels a little less down about his body.
He comes home with Robby again after his shift, finding his tampons along with some snacks and a small note that says “I love you” in the guest room from Jack. Robby helps him schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist online, then they make dinner and eat together on the couch while watching a movie. Dennis leans back on Robby and lets himself really appreciate everything they do for him. He turns his head, smiling and kissing Robby on the cheek.
“I love you.”
Robby smiles back, “I love you too.”

Chapter Text

It’s been a long day. It has been pretty successful, by emergency department standards, but everyone has been working hard. Robby has been working on critical cases most of the day, and he feels so burnt out on giving orders. He’s been in control of everything for hours, and it’s not like he usually isn't, there have just been a ton of difficult cases today and the constant quick decisions are wearing him down.
He’s staring at a chart, trying to figure out the best course of action for the patient and it’s just not coming to him. He brings his hand up to his face and rubs his eyes, trying to spark something. He does figure it out after another minute of zoning out on the chart.
Dennis has been noticing, watching him get more and more irritated as he gives orders and how exhausted he looks. He wants to help, but they’re working so Dennis can’t do anything about it. Still, he manages to make it through their shift and make the decisions he needs to. By the end his mind feels wrung out of answers. Robby sees Jack at handover, pulling him aside to give him a kiss. Jack notices his exhaustion, but doesn’t push because he doesn’t seem to want to think anymore.
Robby gives Dennis a tired smile when they meet outside and Dennis smiles back.
“You alright?” Dennis asks.
Robby considers it, then sighs. “Yeah, I just don’t want to be in control for a little while.”
Dennis knows it, he can see from the look on his face and the way he’s been acting for the past few hours, but actually hearing him say it like that piques his interest. It switches something on inside of him, and he knows how to help. He steps closer to Robby, placing a hand on the back of his neck and standing on his toes to get near his ear.
“We can make that happen,” Dennis whispers, his lips ghosting over Robby’s neck.
He pulls back enough to look Robby in the eyes, and he is frozen and blushing. He looks a little shocked. Dennis stands flat now, hand still on Robby’s neck, looking up at him too innocently for what he’s implying.
“Would you like that?”
Robby seems to snap out of a trance, nodding quickly. Dennis chuckles, and gestures with his head to Robby’s bike so they can get going. The ride is calm, the air feeling nice on Robby’s face and doing well to distract him from the day. Dennis rests his head on his back and wraps his arms protectively around his waist. Robby feels grounded by his warmth around him.
When they get back to the house and go inside, Dennis pulls him in by the waist and kisses him deeply. The kiss ends sooner than he wants it to, and Dennis smiles at the disappointment on his face when he pulls away.
“Shower and change into something comfy while I make dinner,” Dennis says, a firm but gentle hand resting on Robby’s cheek with his thumb cradling his jaw.
Robby still looks disappointed, but he nods. Dennis smiles.
“Good.”
Then Dennis releases him, and he is quick to head for the shower. It still surprises him sometimes when Dennis takes control like this, but he loves it. He loves when Dennis gives him instructions to mindlessly follow, making it so he doesn’t have to think about it, and the gently authoritative tone he takes on. He’s used to it with Jack, but there’s something so oddly endearing about seeing Dennis do it. He also finds it incredibly attractive.
Robby showers quickly, anticipation building in his stomach. He throws on sweatpants and the shirt that Dennis loves because it’s just a bit too short and lifts over his tummy when he raises his arms. He pads to the kitchen when he’s done.
Dennis has changed too now, wearing a pair of Jack’s boxers and one of Robby’s t-shirts while he cooks. Robby finds it so effortlessly hot. He smiles at him from the stove and gestures with his head to the dining room table.
“Sit. It’s almost ready.”
It’s not necessarily an order he needs to give, Robby probably would have done that regardless, but he loves the fact that he doesn’t even have to consider it. A few minutes later Dennis joins him, placing a plate of pasta in front of both of them. He sits next to him, bringing his chair close enough so their knees bump when they eat. They enjoy comfortable silence while they eat, and once they’re done Dennis takes their plates to the sink. He returns a minute later, placing a glass of water in front of him and kissing Robby’s head.
“Drink this and wait for me on the couch. I’m gonna do the dishes and be right there.”
All the instructions are simple, easy to follow without much thought. He grabs the glass of water and heads to the couch, drinking it and scrolling on his phone while Dennis washes the dishes.
Robby feels Dennis’s hand running through his hair from behind about 10 minutes later. He smiles as Dennis comes around the couch in front of him. Dennis glances at the glass, making sure he did as he was told and giving half a nod upon seeing it empty.
“Let’s go to bed,” Dennis says, gently pulling at his hand.
Robby just follows, letting himself be guided mindlessly and trusting Dennis’s lead. Dennis is kissing him as soon as they’re in the room, pushing him towards the bed while he does. When the backs of his knees hit the bed, he feels Dennis pushing down on his shoulders, so he sits. Dennis keeps kissing him, getting his knees on the bed to straddle his hips. Robby moans in his mouth when he sits directly on his dick. Dennis pulls back, holding his face and smiling.
“Feels good doesn’t it?”
Robby nods before tilting his head back and moaning as Dennis grinds down and starts kissing him again.
He is quick to get Robby’s shirt off, only pulling away from the kiss to get it past his head. Then he makes Robby lay down, and starts kissing down his torso while untying his sweatpants. Robby lays back, eyes closed and making small noises.
“Lift your hips for me love,” Dennis requests.
Robby complies, and Dennis pulls his pants and boxer down in one go, leaving him bare while Dennis is still fully clothed. His dick is fully hard, and when it’s released onto his stomach a bit of precum drips there. Dennis just continues down his torso, kissing and leaving little marks on the skin, and when he reaches the pooling of precum he licks it off. Robby shivers at it.
When Dennis is down to his hips, he holds the base of his dick and looks up at him.
“Look at me Micheal.”
Robby groans when he finally opens his eyes and looks down. He sees Dennis looking up at him, grinning hungrily, with his mouth almost touching his cock. Dennis wraps his lips around the tip and licks the slit. Robby tries to buck his hips, but Dennis’s strong hands hold them down. He whines just barely.
“Easy. Let go,” Dennis orders softly.
He does his best to relax his muscles and not move as Dennis’s mouth slides down his dick. His tongue rubs the underside and he’s learned just the right amount of suction that works for each of his boyfriends, and it’s driving Robby fucking crazy. Dennis pulls off just for a second to say something.
“Good just like that.”
He bobs his head, slowly picking up the pace. Robby just moans and pants, unable to move into the contact. Dennis feels the way all his muscles contract, knowing that he’s close, then he pulls away and gets off the bed.
Robby releases a noise somewhere between a pant and a whine at the loss. His eyes had drifted shut again, and when he opens them he’s met with the sight of Dennis taking a picture. Dennis smirks.
“For Jack,” he explains.
Then he tosses his phone to the side, and begins removing his own clothes. He does it slowly and teasing and Robby eats it up, just lying there watching in awe. The last thing he does before getting back on the bed is pull a condom from the bedside drawer. He sits down on the bed between Robby’s legs, tearing it open with his teeth and rolling it over his dick. Robby inhales sharply at the sensitivity. Dennis gives him a satisfied smile, and moves up to kiss him again.
Dennis kisses like he’s hungry when he gets like this, tongue pushing into his mouth and teeth scraping his lips. Dennis hovers over Robby’s dick, straddling his hips again, then he presses down and rubs his wetness over him. They both groan at the sensation. They keep going like that for a minute, and Robby doesn’t notice Dennis lining him up with his hole until the tip slides in. He moans loudly into Dennis’s mouth. Dennis pulls back from the kiss, bracing his hands on Robby’s chest as he slides down.
“Fuck,” Robby gasps when Dennis fully seats himself on his dick.
Dennis tilts his head back, and exhales shakily while smiling. He looks down at Robby and rolls his hips, making Robby moan.
“You’re doing so good,” Dennis says.
Dennis takes a minute before he moves, partially adjusting and partially teasing. Every twitch of his hole pulls a sound out of Robby. Then he starts moving, and despite the slow start he is moving fast now. He kisses Robby hard while he fucks himself back on his cock at a brutal pace. Both of them are moaning loud and the sounds of the bodies coming together is making it that much hotter for them both. Dennis knows again when Robby is close by the way his body tenses, and to get himself there with his he reaches down and rubs at his own dick while fucking Robby.
“Cum for me,” he breathes against Robby’s neck as he gets close.
That’s all it takes for Robby to finish, his hips rising slightly just to bury himself a little deeper as he fills the condom. Dennis follows a moment after at the feeling.
They both stay there for a minute, Dennis laying on his chest and catching his breath. They both groan a little as he sits up and removes Robby’s dick.
“I’ll be right back, just cleaning up,” Dennis says as he climbs off the bed.
Robby just lays there, letting himself be taken care of, letting Dennis be in control. Dennis wipes himself down with a washcloth and brings it over. He pulls off and discards the condom before wiping Robby off as well. Robby exhales deeply and smiles as Dennis curls up beside him.
“Thanks Mouse.”
Dennis looks up at him from where he’s curled against his chest and smiles back tiredly. He leans up and gently kisses him.
“Anytime.”
They stay awake like that for a while, just looking at eachother. Robby runs his fingers through Dennis’s hair and Dennis rubs small circles into his back. Dennis’s phone buzzes at the end of the bed.

***

Jack finally gets the chance for a small break after about two hours of working. He decides to message Dennis to check in on Robby since he seemed off when he left.

Jack :Hey Mouse, just checking in. Mike seemed pretty exhausted at handover.:

He sets his phone down for a minute but it goes off again quickly.

Dennis :don’t worry I handled it ;) :

Jack looks at his phone with his brows furrowed in confusion before an image comes through. The image is of Robby laying naked on their bed with his legs spread and hands above his head. His dick is hard and leaking and little marks cover his torso.
“Fuck,” he mutters under his breath, before quickly closing his phone and putting it away.
