Undercover Angel: A Reaper Can Be Blessing & A Curse

Summary:

Madeline “Maddie” Kingston is a doctor, a single mother of four, and someone with a dangerous gift—she can see more than most people, including glimpses of what’s yet to come. She’s spent years refusing Nick Fury’s offers to join the Avengers Initiative, choosing her family and a quiet life over chaos.

But Fury doesn’t accept “no” for long.

When he recruits her to help stabilize Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Maddie is reluctantly pulled into Stark Tower with one mission: fix the broken dynamic between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark before it tears the team apart. What should be a professional assignment quickly becomes personal as Maddie navigates fractured egos, buried trauma, and futures she can’t fully escape.

Because saving the Avengers might be possible—but surviving them is another matter entirely.

Notes:

This is my first fanfic I have written in long time so be nice. Okay for starters this work happen before the beginning of Civil War and will probably go all the way through End Game. Also I love comments so those would be appreciated I love constructive criticism but if you are being mean I will block you so you have been warned. I really freaking excited for people to read this. Oh to be seriously I really should be sleeping but sleep is for the weak.
P.S. If you have questions about any of the OCs most them will be answered in the next couple chapters.
Okay Bye for now.

Chapter 1: The Beginning

Chapter Text

Madeline Kingston was a woman of many talents, whether it be having 4 doctorates before she was thirty, or taking care of 4 children by herself with help when they come around, or is it that she can tell you your future before it ever happens.

Maddie thought her day was going really well because her patients were tolerating the medicine, Dr. Strange wasn't as big of a jerk as usually that was until she stepped inside of her office seeing none other than the one eyed-man himself Director Fury.

Maddie looks at him dead in his eye and says, “To what do I owe this great pleasure of seeing you here in my office,” as she gestures around the room. Fury looks at her taking his time to respond , “I need a favor,” he says.

Maddie looks at him dead in the eye and is already figuring out what Fury wants from her. “No, No, No way there is no way I am doing that. I told you no once I will tell you again.” Maddie looks him dead in the eye in pure frustration.

Fury just smiles at her, “Maddie, they need your help, the world needs your help, you are probably the only woman alive that can do this job.” Maddie walks towards the window in her office and picks up the picture of her and her children smiling from their time in Wilmington.

She turns back around and looks at him and then looks back at the picture. “Do they know you asked me to help, because let’s be honest Fury they aren’t going to take kindly to you suggesting that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes need psychological help,” Maddie says with hints of a faint smile.

Fury just looks at her and shakes his head, smiling, “You know I remember the first time I asked you to join the Avenger Initiative. You had just turned 22 trying to figure out how to take care of 3 kids. You looked me dead in one eye and told me no. The next time I asked you it was for the Ultron catastrophe you told me no then you changed your mind told me this is a one time deal. You ended up saving the life of Pietro Maximoff because and I am starting to understand you only interfere when it’s important. So my question to you, Maddie, do you think helping the Avengers is worth it or not?”

Maddie walks from the window to sit in her office chair, lets out a sigh and says, “You know I didn’t think you had me pegged but they don’t call you “The Spy” for nothing. I’ll help because if I don't, the world as we know it will go to Hell in a handbasket and there will be no one to stop what’s coming. So when do I meet the Avengers?”

Fury just smiles walks toward the closed door of her office and says, “Today, at 3 at Stark Tower,” and then he walks away blending in with the hospital. “Uh, what did I get myself into,” she says to herself, looking at the clock which was nearly to 1 she had 2 hours to figure out how she was going explaining to her children she was going to be working as a therapist/doctor to the Avengers and them not find out about her secret identity. This is going to be so much fun yeah!

Before Maddie could contemplate what she just agreed to when someone knocked on her door, “Come in” she said. The person at the door who knocked was none other than James Barnes. When Maddie saw that it was him she smiled knowing that every day on the dot he came to take her to lunch because she seemed to always forget to eat. “It’s lunch time already where are we going to eat because you are not going to believe who I just saw,” she said, getting up and pulling Bucky with her out the door into the hallway and off they went Bucky not even questioning where they were going.

When they got outside of the hospital Maddie looked up expectantly at Bucky and said “So where are we going to eat for lunch? I'm in the mood for diner food.” Bucky just shakes his head at her, taking her hand pulling her along towards the car.

“Are you just going to leave me hanging? I'm hungry and I want greasy diner fries with a milkshake and a burger the size of my face,” she says with a smile. “I heard you the first time that's where we’re going if you would just give me a chance, Mad Hatter,” Bucky says with a smile.

Maddie looks up at him with horror at the nickname when Bucky sees her face he just laughs knowing good and well she hates that nickname but she fits it so well. He lets go of Maddie's hand so that she can get into the black suv. Once they were out of the parking lot Bucky turned to her and asked, “What is so important that you need to tell me Mads.”

“Guess who came to see me in my office today?” Maddie asks her face not giving away who it was. “I don’t know the Queen of England,” Bucky says sarcastically. “Ha, Ha, and No it was Fury,” Maddie said looking out the window. “What did he want,” Bucky asked her, worried about what the man could want from her.

“He wants me to help the Avengers work on their interpersonal relationship skills from what I gleaned from his mind and his emotions. I first told him no then resigned myself to the fact of the future I saw last week. So I have a meeting with them at 3 and don’t worry I won’t tell Steve about you okay. I know you aren’t ready to have that conversation.” Maddie says look at Bucky knowing that was what he was worried about.

“Are you sure this is something you want to do Maddie I-I mean you have been avoiding this for as long as I’ve known which isn't a long time but still Doll if this what you want to do then I will support whatever you need you know that right.”

Maddie rests her hand on Bucky's thigh and looks at him. “I know you’ll always have my back one problem though is how am I going to tell the kids I mean Peter is obsessed with everything Tony Stark creates, Max is so enamored with everything Captain America because of you thanks for that by the way and the girls well they could literally careless about the heroes because Tori thinks I am superhero because I saved her from that mutant trafficking ring, and Livy thinks your superhero so that going to be fun conversation when I get home tonight.” Maddie says so tired just knowing what was going to happen.

“Well you're not alone, we are here at the diner where you requested a milkshake, fries, and a burger the size of your face milady,” Bucky says. Maddie didn’t even notice they were there. She got out the car and headed into the dinner knowing that this was the last lunch she was going to have while she worked at the hospital and she was going to savor every drop of grease and peace she could because after this lunch she going to have to deal with most emotionally constipated people she has ever met.
