"I love you”
A whisper, a confession, a promise. One that never reached its destination. Too quiet to be heard. Too small to matter.
Scott’s vision was blurry through his tears. He tried everything he could. He tried magic. He tried words. But as always. He couldn't save the people who mattered.
Nom’s passing never left his mind. Watching the man he loved so dearly vanish in front of him. Hearing Katie and 4c’s sobs next to him. His ears rang. His vision darkened. This was the third time he lost someone he couldn't save.
“Its not your fault”
Nom told him that. He said it over and over again to make sure Scott understood.
He didn't. He didn't understand.
If he was stronger. If he knew what Nom was doing. He could have stopped him before he made that damn deal with that damned creaking king. He could have saved Nom.
But he didn't. He couldn't save Nom. He couldn't save his dad. And he couldn't save his mom.
He couldn't even save himself.
No one has seen Scott since that day. It has been a week. He locked himself in his greenhouse. Taking care of his plants. But he couldn't save them either. His magic was fading. Was it because of his emotions? Or was it something else? Was he losing himself?
The breaking point came when the flower nom gave him withered. He watched it turn to ash in his own hands. Tears falling slowly onto it.
He couldn't do this. He promised Nom he would be strong. He promised his friends he would keep fighting. He promised Mae they would go sailing together.
For once. Scott wasn't going to keep his promises.
Under the cover of dark, avoiding Owaine and Gracie's patrol, he snuck to nom’s grave. Chuckling at the sight of it.
Disorganised and chaotic. Just like nom would want it.
He sat in front of it. Tears already threatening to fall. “Hi Nom” he whispered. His voice cracked. “I miss you”
He didn't have much to say. Clutching a piece of paper in his hand tightly. His hands were shaking. He was scared.
“I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise. I'm sorry I let you down again. I let everyone down. It's what I do” he chuckled dryly. “I’ll see you soon” he whispered. Getting up and planting a kiss on the headstone. Placing the note on the ground, he walked behind the grave to the edge of the cliff. Looking at the sharp rocks beneath.
Holding the headstone, leaning back.
Taking a deep breath.
Scott let go.
To whoever finds this
I'm sorry i could not live up to the expectations of a high mage
Im sorry i failed you all
You are my family. My friends. Don't miss me too much. Keep building. Keep working towards a better
