The Breaking of the Realm

Summary:

It has been several years since the destructive Blackfyre War was won. The Seven Kingdoms have slowly rebuilt itself into an uneasy peace, led by King Rhaegar and Prince Viserys. House Targaryen begins to find itself divided as Prince Aegon's horrifying mutilation prevents him from siring an heir. In the North, Lord Eddard Stark has removed himself from the southern politics and focused on his family, while allowing his son and heir, Robb, to fulfill the duties of Warden of the North. In the Westerlands, Princess Rhaenys plots with Tywin to secure her childrens future as dragons, and across the Narrow Sea, Myrcella Lannister has thrived.

However, the ancient forces that pulled the strings of the Blackfyre War are pleased with the outcome and continue to move and plot, while in the Far East, a lost wolf navigates a foreign and unknown world.

Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction based on the ASOIAF universe. All cannon characters, plots, and settings are the exclusive property of GRRM; I make no claim to ownership.

This is my second story in a planned three story series. Unlike my first story, I will upload this in various posts to help correct any mistakes that are caught and adapt the story with suggestions that I may be given. With comments I will try and correct any mistakes that are pointed out, or offer clarification on why it is what it is. I hope everyone enjoys it, as I have frequently found excellent stories, written by many talented authors on this site.

Chapter 1: A Chronicle of the Realm

Notes:

I have made edits regarding some timelines in the story. The major one being, this STARTS in 305 AC, as opposed to 304 AC. Changes were made for the character ages. I have posted three separate 'stories' by Archmaesters so readers have a reference on what happened during the last book and this one. There may be inconsistent parts, and please let me know if any are caught. I have done another few chapters since the last mass upload, and will hopefully have more for you by the end of the month. Thank you for the support and encouragement and I hope you enjoy.

Chapter Text

The Turn of the 3rd Century

Archmaester Rollord, 304 AC

The beginning of the Third Century after Aegon’s Conquest was marked by a period of war and instability.

When King Rhaegar took the Throne in 282 After Conquest (AC) Robert Baratheon’s Rebellion had recently been put down. His Grace, then the Crown Prince, slew the rebel lord during the titanic Battle of the Trident. The other commanders of the Rebellion, Lord Eddard Stark, commanding the Northern forces and Ser Elbert Arryn, commanding the Vale’s forces on behalf of his uncle, Lord Jon Arryn, agreed to a truce with Prince Rhaegar.

History has viewed this battle as a tactical draw, but a strategic victory for the Royal Forces with the death of Lord Robert Baratheon. However, Rhaegar recognized that Lord Stark’s tactical brilliance could drag on the rebellion for years, and offered generous terms, such as pardons for all Rebel Lords, Stannis Baratheon being named Lord of Storm’s End, and the safety of Lyanna Stark, which were accepted.

King Aerys ‘The Mad King’ had planned to blow up the capital, King’s Landing rather than capitulate to the Crown Prince and allow him to take the Iron Throne. Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard intervened, slaying the Mad King and his minions, therefore saving half a million people and allowing Rhaegar to take the Throne peacefully.

With the Iron Throne secure, Rhaegar called for the Kingsguard to bring Lady Lyanna to King’s Landing, where it was revealed that they had wed with Princess Elia’s blessing. The two Queens forged a strong and unlikely bond and friendship, and the realm began to heal.

Prince Gaemon Targaryen was born two months after the end of the war, giving King Rhaegar another son while Dowager Queen Rhaella gave birth to a daughter, Princess Daenerys Targaryen a few months later. House Targaryen slowly began to rebuild itself.

Six years later, Balon Greyjoy attempted to rebel, and the realm once again rallied for war. Lord Eddard Stark, Lord Tywin Lannister, and Lord Lucerys Velayrion, the Master of Ships, led an aggressive campaign, and swiftly crushed the Greyjoys. Lord Stannis Baratheon proved himself by destroying the Iron Fleet off of Fair Isle, leading Lucerys Velayrion’s van. Lord Balon Greyjoy knelt and once again swore fealty after the bloody Fall of Pyke.

With the death of Rodrick Greyjoy, killed by Jason Mallister at Seaguard, and Maron Greyjoy at Pyke, Balon’s last remaining son, Theon, was taken by Lord Stark as a ward and hostage, to keep Lord Greyjoy in check.

Shortly after the war, tragedy struck once again when Queen Lyanna died in childbirth, along with her and Rhaegar’s stillborn daughter, Princess Visenya. Her dying wish was for Prince Gaemon to be raised in Winterfell with her family.

Prince Gaemon was sent to foster with the Starks, with Ser Oswell Whent as his sworn sword and mentor, while King Rhaegar mourned his wife and daughter.

Prince Gaemon thrived in Winterfell. Lord Starks children, Robb, Alaric, Sansa, Arya, and Brandon welcomed Gaemon, specifically Robb and Alaric, who were of similar age to the prince. While in Winterfell, Gaemon grew to be an extremely skilled warrior, under Lord Stark and Ser Oswell’s tutelage. Lady Catelyn Stark also personally seen to Gaemon’s education regarding the games of court, but sadly died bringing her last child, Rickon, into the world.

Crown Prince Aegon and Princess Rhaenys remained in King’s Landing, with Aegon thriving as an administrator and showing promise as a warrior, while Princess Rhaenys grew to be one of the realms greatest beauties, along with Princess Daenerys.

Prince Viserys, no longer under the influence of his father, was promptly raised by Rhaegar and Rhaella, and thrived, being named Master-of-War in 295 AC. Many of the bards began to sing that House Targaryen may recover to be as great as it was since before the Dance, albeit without dragons.

But peace rarely lasts in this world, and rumours began to grow that Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh wished to put aside their hatred for one another and combine forces once again to re-establish the infamous ‘Triarchy’. Unknown to the rest of the realm, a hidden Blackfyre name Maegor, was leading the Golden Company, and allied with the cities. The city of Volantis submitted itself to the Triarchy rule, after a short but bloody war.

King Rhaegar summoned Prince Gaemon back to King’s Landing in 299 AC, also inviting Lord Stark to sit on the Small Council as an advisor and representative of the North. Lord Stark escorted Prince Gaemon back to the capital, brining both of his daughters, Ladies Sansa and Arya, and his youngest son, Rickon.

Prince Gaemon returned after eleven years of fostering, quickly forming a strong bond with Crown Prince Aegon. Princess Rhaenys was noticeably cold, and many of the nobles felt the tension.

After much deliberation, Prince Aegon agreed to wed Margaery Tyrell, bringing House Tyrell the royal match they had so desired for generations.

Lord Stark meanwhile, was reunited with a former love, as Ashara Dayne was Queen Elia’s lady in waiting, and the two re-established their love.

Meanwhile, in the North, Robb Stark, Alaric Stark, and Brandon Stark found a litter of direwolves, the first ones seen south of the Wall in centuries. There was a pup for each Stark child, with two to spare. Alaric Stark brought four of the pups south to Kings Landing, allowing the other three Starks to claim a pup, as well as Prince Gaemon.

However, all was not quiet Beyond-The-Wall. Mance Rayder, a former brother of the Night’s Watch, broke his vows and rallied the Wildlings as King-Beyond-The-Wall. Robb Stark, acting Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North, called his banners and marched to confront this threat, with his foster brother Theon Greyjoy assisting him.

A campaign was planned, with Robb Stark utterly shattering Mance Rayders forces at the Battle of the Fist. Roose Bolton led a secondary army near the ruined town of Hardhome, before disappearing, with no trace of him or his four thousand men.

Robb Stark ended up marrying a wildling, by the name of Val, before the Old Gods, and brought thousands of Wildling women and children south of the Wall, under his protection. These wildlings bended the knee and agreed to swear fealty to the North and to the King, allowing the North to grow more populous.

The realm, and specifically House Stark, was overjoyed and surprised when it was revealed that Allyria Dayne, believed to be Ser Arthur and Ashara Daynes sister, was actually Lord Stark and Ashara’s daughter, conceived during the Tourney at Harrenhal. King Rhaegar legitimized her as a Stark shortly after.

With the growing threat of the Triarchy, King Rhaegar wed Princess Daenerys to Ser Elbert Arryn and Lysa Tully’s eldest son, Ser Brynden Arryn, to secure the support of the Vale in the event war was declared. This led to a great rift between Princess Daenerys and the King, as Dowager Queen Rhaella had been planning to betroth her to Prince Gaemon, which the princess seemed enthusiastic about. After the wedding, Daenerys was taken to the Vale, and Prince Gaemon was named Prince of Harrenhal, after Rhaegar began restoring the castle and purchasing the lands from House Whent.

Lord Jon Arryn relinquished his titles to his heir, Ser Elbert, making his nephew the new Lord of the Vale and Warden of the East.

With the Royal Wedding between Prince Aegon and Lady Margaery, the entire realm gathered, with Robb Stark brining the last unclaimed direwolf pup for his newfound elder sister, Allyria, and welcomed her into the family happily.

It was during the celebrations that King Rhaegar was informed that the Triarchy and Maegor Blackfyre declared war, with his intention to claim the Iron Throne.

What followed was the largest mustering in the Seven Kingdoms history, with each region of Westeros contributing to the war effort.

Prince Viserys was given command as Master-of-War, and he tasked Lord Elbert to lead the forces of the Vale, North, Riverland’s, and Stormlands with seizing Pentos, which had aligned itself with the Triarchy.

Master-of-Ships, Lucerys Velaryion meanwhile, successfully led the Royal Fleet to seize the Stepstones, but perished in the battles. Lord Stannis Baratheon was named as his replacement and promptly took command of the Royal Fleet, which was reinforced by the Iron Fleet.

Prince Viserys took Bloodstone as his command center, and planned an invasion of Tyrosh from there.

After six months, Pentos fell during a daring attack, in which wildfire was used to bring down the walls. Alaric Stark gained fame by slaying the infamous and massive ‘Champion of Pentos’ in single combat. Robb Stark was wounded in the siege, leaving Alaric to lead the Northern forces under Lord Elbert.

It did not take long for the war to take a turn, as Prince Aegon was critically injured by Maegor Blackfyre in single combat near Tyrosh, crippling and disfiguring him. Prince Lewyn Martell of the Kingsguard died protecting the wounded prince, and while Aegon was successfully rescued, the Battle of Tyrosh forced the Royal Forces back to Bloodstone.

Needing reinforcements, Prince Viserys charged Stannis Baratheon to transport Lord Elbert’s forces to Bloodstone. While taking the forces to the Stepstones, an ambush occurred, with the massive Triarchy Armada engaging the Royal Fleet in the largest sea battle in Westeros history.

Lord Elbert was transporting wildfire on his ship, which was ignited, killing him, his son and heir, Brynden Arryn, and countless other commanders and nobles. Alaric Stark was also lost during this battle, leaving the North without one if its best fighters.

This crippled the Vales forces, effectively knocking them out of the war, and the pregnant Daenerys was widowed. Elbert and Lysa’s second son, Petyr Arryn was named heir of the Vale, and Jon Arryn took up the lordship once again.

The Hand of the King, Jon Connington, and Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Barriston Selmy were dispatched to Bloodstone to help reinforce Viserys, but an assault from the Triarchy forced the Royal Forces to evacuate, leaving the Lord Commander and Hand dead.

King Rhaegar named Lord Stark as Hand of the King and gave him command of the war effort. Lord Stark gathered a massive host of reinforcements and combined them with the survivors and veterans of the Stepstone, making a final stand at Weeping Town.

The battle that followed was the largest ever fought on Westerosi soil, with tens upon tens of thousands fighting. Prince Gaemon heroically slew the last of the Blackfyres in a duel, shattering the forces of the Triarchy and Stannis Baratheon led the sea battle that all but destroyed the Triarchy Armada, but perished himself. Thousand upon thousands died in the war, completely reshaping the power dynamics of the noble Houses.

Notable casualties of the war included;

Balon Greyjoy

Vicatrian Greyjoy

Elbert Arryn

Brynden Arryn

Alaric Stark

Jon ‘Greatjon’ Umber

Rickard Karstark

Ser Oswell Whent

Ser Barristan Selmy

Prince Lewyn Martell

Ser Loras Tyrell

Ser Allister Thorne

Stannis Baratheon

And many, many more. Theon Greyjoy became the new Lord of Pyke, while Edric Baratheon became the new Lord of Storm’s End with his uncle, Renly Baratheon, ruling as regent.

It was around this time that Daenerys miscarried her child, and with Brynden now being deceased, was released from any ties to House Arryn, returning to Kings Landing.

When the nobles returned to Kings Landing, King Rhaegar announced that Princess Rhaenys would marry Joffrey Lannister, the heir to Casterly Rock, while Daenerys would wed Gaemon, reconciling with his sister.

Lord Stark resigned as Hand, with Viserys being nominated by him to take the position. Strangely, Myrcella Lannister, who had mysteriously earned the ire of Princess Rhaenys and the Sand Snakes, also disappeared without a trace.

Across the Narrow Sea, the Triarchy collapsed utterly. A strange, unexplained catastrophe occurred in Lys, and Volantis broke away shortly after.

Once again, for the second time in less than thirty years, the Seven Kingdoms began to rebuild itself. However, us at the Citadel believe that the huge losses that were suffered during the war will take a generation to recover from.

Many questions were asked shortly after the war. Why did Dorne and the Vale contribute so little compared to the Reach, North, Westerlands, and Stormlands? Lord Jon Arryn defended his decision until his death in 303 AC that he was keeping his forces in reserve, to defend Kings Landing if necessary. His honour was enough that questions were not asked, but rumours persisted that the widowed Lysa had made the decision before Jon Arryn could retake control of the Vale. As for Dorne, that is another matter. Prince Doran needed to keep as many swords at home due to the proximity of the Stepstone and the possibility of an invasion.

Scholars and Maesters all agree that the beginning of the third century may even rival the Century of Blood after the fall of Valyria. We can only hope and pray to whatever gods we worship that peace will last, as surely another war would break the realm apart.

The Reformation of the Night’s Watch

Recorded by Archmaester Kael, 304 AC

In the years following Lord Robb Stark’s decisive victory over Mance Rayder, and in the bloody aftermath of the war against the last of the House Blackfyre, the Iron Throne turned its attention northward.

The ancient brotherhood of the Night’s Watch, long in decline and reduced to fewer than a thousand men, had become but a shadow of the force it had once been in ages past. Its castles stood abandoned, its patrols grew smaller with each passing year, and many in the south had begun to regard the order as little more than a convenient place to send criminals, debtors, and unwanted sons.

It was Prince Viserys Targaryen, serving then as Hand of the King, who proposed the reforms that would alter the order more profoundly than at any point since its founding.

Rather than demanding a life sentence of service, as tradition had long required, new recruits would instead swear themselves to fixed terms of duty. Any man who served faithfully for twenty-five years would be granted a reward worthy of such sacrifice: either lands within the New Gift, to be held in service to the realm, or a knighthood and royal pension, should he choose to return south.

Furthermore, men who had completed no fewer than five years of honorable service were permitted to voluntarily depart the order should they wish, though in doing so they forfeited all claims to pension, title, or land.

Most controversial of all, the ancient prohibitions against marriage and fathering children were quietly abandoned for volunteers who entered under the new royal charter. Prince Viserys argued that if the Watch was to survive another century, it must cease being a graveyard for men and become instead a true frontier order, capable of planting roots in the North.

King Rhaegar Targaryen approved his brother’s recommendations.

The timing proved fortuitous.

The Blackfyre War had left the realm with no shortage of battle-hardened men—second sons, hedge knights, veteran soldiers, and younger nobles with little prospect of inheritance. Many saw opportunity in the North where once there had been only exile.

By the year 303 AC, the strength of the Night’s Watch had grown from fewer than one thousand sworn brothers to nearly six thousand men.

Under the command of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, called the Old Bear, the Watch underwent its greatest military reorganization in recorded history.

Six castles now stood manned once more:

  • Castle Black
  • Eastwatch-by-the-Sea
  • Shadow Tower
  • Greyguard
  • Long Barrow
  • Queensgate

Drawing inspiration from the military doctrines of distant Yi Ti, Lord Commander Mormont restructured the rangers into a more disciplined standing force.

Each Battalion now consisted of six hundred rangers, commanded by senior officers.

Each Battalion was divided into five Companies of one hundred and twenty men.

Each Company was further divided into six Patrols of twenty rangers.

This structure allowed for clearer chains of command, more frequent patrols, and faster responses to raids, incursions, and sightings beyond the Wall.

By 304 AC, the deployment of the battalions stood thus:

First Battalion — permanently stationed at Castle Black.

Second Battalion — divided between Castle Black and Greyguard, maintaining central patrol routes.

Third Battalion — stationed between Eastwatch-by-the-Sea and Queensgate, securing the eastern stretches of the Wall and coastal approaches.

Fourth Battalion — stationed between Shadow Tower and Long Barrow, tasked with watching the mountain passes and western forests.

The remaining sworn brothers served as builders, stewards, engineers, blacksmiths, scouts, healers, and reserve fighting forces, ensuring that each castle could sustain itself through winter if isolated.

Reports from the Wall suggest that wildling raids have not diminished, despite the defeat and capture of Mance Rayder. Stranger still, the free folk appear more coordinated now than in years prior, conducting raids with discipline and retreating before superior numbers can be brought against them.

Some among the rangers—particularly younger men raised on northern tales—have taken to claiming that the wildlings are being driven south by the return of the so-called Others.

Here at the Citadel, such claims are regarded with the skepticism they deserve.

The Others, if they ever existed at all, belong to the Age of Heroes, alongside grumpkins, snarks, and the giants of nursery tales. It is far more likely that the wildlings, deprived of their king, now splinter into warbands competing for land, food, and survival.

And yet…

Lord Commander Mormont has reportedly written to both Winterfell and King’s Landing, stating that he expects the Night’s Watch to number more than ten thousand men before the decade’s end.

Whether such numbers are truly needed to guard against raiders, beasts, and common northern dangers… or something older, colder, and less easily explained…

…remains, for now, a matter of speculation.
