Mystery of the Soul Riders

Summary:

Some thousand years ago, an asteroid fell from the sky into the sea off the coast of an island.

An asteroid it was, bearing the mark of intelligent design; an asteroid with a symmetry that escaped the notice even of the most observant eyes; an asteroid that turned out not to be an asteroid at all, but a spaceship travelling from a distant blue star, containing in its cargo both a messenger of hope and an instrument of light, in the wake of which a new and terrible force would be unleashed upon the Earth.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

There is no need to dwell on why or how Garnok first became the monster that we know it to be. It would be as much time wasted as it would be to start digging through early human history to trace the seed of evil so that we could sow it; egotism is an inherent trait of a conscious, self-preserving being, which, however, many of us suppress for the sake of social interaction, thereby revealing what good people we are at putting on a show. The same struggle entre good and evil rages in all of us, as it perhaps did even in him in the beginning. It is shrouded in darkness, which causes creatures to lean so heavily toward soulful inadequacy. The bridge along which we balance precariously is narrow, and the land on the side closest to self-centeredness seems closer and, in any case, truly more inviting. Shocking spikes await on the side where goodness reigns. Not everyone can do this, because sometimes one is simply swayed, and willpower has no bearing on the choice of direction. Yet some of us—and I would like to think that even though this bunch is definitely more vocal and takes up more space in newspaper headlines, on the internet, and in communities, these people are still relatively few compared to the sympathetic and benevolent—succumb to their temptations early on. And that is probably what Garnok was like. This is the most comprehensive answer I can give you, and please know that the truth of the matter will always be far more complex than these words alone.
