always saying something to throw me off

Summary:

For someone who claims to hate Beasts, Azrael sure seems to like it when she looks like one.

Notes:

[guy who won voice] you'll never guess what

i can't say i enjoyed past chaldea (being a romani fan is suffering) but considering one of my biggest wishes was 'olgazrael interactions' i guess i came out of it well fed. i wanna write something more substantial for these two at some point but have my quick post-readthrough thoughts instead

Work Text:

Like most things Olga experiences in this timeslip, Azrael's comments are easy to compartmentalise to deal with later on when there isn't a goddess hellbent on keeping them in an eternal time-loop and one Romani Archaman haunting Chaldea's halls like a bad dream. In fact, she usually ignores anything that comes out of Azrael's mouth that doesn't seem like it'll come back to bite her later. Pretending he doesn't exist is one of the only ways Olga gets anything done. (Sending him off on fetch quests, too. He's surprisingly good at following orders with good enough reason.)

She's long since shed Miss Crane's concerningly precise disguise, but sitting in her assigned room hours after Urd's defeat, she really can't help but think about Azrael.

He'd helped, some way, in battle. Knew that at some point Fujimaru would be able to summon their Grand Servants and reminded them of this without sounding like he was doing them a favour. Even though he said he would only come along to observe, it really did seem like he wanted to make sure of Urd's defeat. (Though, she did come back. Maybe Azrael just has a habit of giving Beasts the benefit of the doubt.)

...But even this is just a distraction from what is truly weighing on her mind.

What Azrael said back in the command room didn't sound like a joke. Dressed as the worst part of her, that frightened beast clamouring for a sliver of purpose and friendship, he'd said he found her attractive.

What the hell does that say about him? About her? That Azrael is perfectly content with aiming his sword at the neck of a perfectly normal and sane young woman but it's that presidential-obsessed alien that gives him pause? The epitome of a beast, the very being he swore to slay if things went sideways? Not to mention, he thought it best to casually mention this in the middle of a crisis?

Olga flops back into her bed, closing her eyes hard enough to see phosphenes behind her eyelids. It's almost easy to wave this off as typical Azrael-nonsense. For the scarce few months she's known him, he's always been like this. A weirdo with no filter, who can never decide if he wants to tease or threaten her or both. It's irritating on the best of days. Today, it's just strange.

If he means to put her off, simple threats still work wonders on her. But if he genuinely meant to compliment her... she'd like to hear something nice about her leadership for once!

("You were truly prepared to go that far for Chaldea.")

It's only because she's led a life devoid of romance and not because anything Azrael said actually meant anything to her that she rolls over and buries her face in her pillow, face red, willing for this world to tick one more second forward.
