Chapter 1: Chasing summer skies

Chapter Text

It was a warm summer Friday, college classes felt almost longer than the fielding session coach made them do on Mondays after a full weekend of break. and thank god for Sawamura on Fridays they didn't had any baseball practice. It meant movie night with snacks, soda and his two roommates either playing a game or going out like they usually did. But for him? For him it would be a calm and peaceful evening. Well... that's exactly what Sawamura thought.

The bell rang, striking Eijun out of his thoughts. Finally. the day was *FINALLY* over.

The pitcher got up from his desk shoving his books and pencil case the further down he could in his dark red backpack, same backpack that Haruichi swear it was the exact same he's been using since his first day at Seido. Eijun laughed a little at the thought while airing lazily in the middle of the school hallway, smiling at whoever passed beside him.
Sawamura has always been popular without even trying, his endless energy, positive mindset and his bright smile attired people like he was the strongest magnet to even exist on earth. The guy didn't care one bit, he loved talking so much it became an habit to just randomly stop before classes to chat. okay yes he'd surprise himself running to class and stepping all the time in at exactly 1.37 seconds before the bell ring, But that was Eijun for you. He was always going away with it.

after a good 10 minutes the baseball player finally made it to his dorm, to his surprise his friend Haruichi was already draped over his bed.

"HARUICHI!!you're already here!?" "YOU NINJA HOW DID YO-"

"Yah, ya.. Eijun-kun I'm not fast" the pink haired boy cut him before he could get any louder, if that's even possible... "you're just taking forever in the hallways since you just stop to talk to anyone who cross your path." he continued uninterestingly doom scrolling on his phone.

Eijun didn't respond , he laid on the little twink's bed beside him opening his own Instagram to start answering dms.
it didn't took so long before he started talking again, not that the little Kominato was shocked its how the pitcher is.

"do you know where San went? he's not here yet?"

"oh he said he had to go to the convenience store before coming back" the second baseman answered tone as soft as always.

Sawamura opened his moth and closed it almost immediately after as their dorm room burst open.

"GUYS GUYS GUYS!" the incomer scream dropping a bag full of soju bottles on the edge of the bed.

Both Eijun and Haruichi looks at him confused waiting for him to start speaking again.

"We are going out tonight" the Shortstop said with a HUGE grin on his face.

"absolutely fucking not San" the brown haired replied almost cutting the other.

"Why noooooot cmon it'll be funnnn"

Sawamura looked at the other and had an idea, he grinned and then followed with that annoying mocking tone that Furuya told him again and again not to use:

"I will go if Haruichi goes." Sawamura happy with his answer knowing the smaller never go out like this lean back on the bed looking over San his expression like he just strikeout three batter one after the other in an hard game.

San looked over at Him a victorious grin stretching his face slowly. making Eijun panic a little at this unexpected reaction.

"WHAT? WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT SAN , HARUICHI TELL HIM WERE NOT GOING HE'S SCARING ME"

The helpless boy looked over at Kominato but he was already looking away embarassed...

"Haruichi!!!??? cmon hurry or hell drag us to-" he continue desperately.

"get ready Swamuraaaaaa our friend over here already agreed by message way before I got back here hahahah"

The so called Sharks's ace looked back at the second baseman betrayal in his eyes but still hopefull the shortstop is playing with him...

"Haruichi..."

The smaller boy winced.

"I'm sorry, Eijun-kun."

"NO, YOU'RE NOT!"

"I kind of am."

"Kind of?!"

Sawamura clutched at his chest like he'd just been hit by a line drive.

"After everything we've been through together. The victories. The defeats. The group projects."

"We had one group project."

"THE MEMORIES."

San dropped onto Haruichi's bed laughing so hard he nearly rolled off.

"Oh my god, you're unbelievable."

"No, YOU are unbelievable!" Sawamura shot back. "You knew! You both knew!"

"Of course we knew."

"And nobody thought to ask me?"

"We are asking you."

"No, you're kidnapping me."

"That's a strong word."

"Is it?"

The room dissolved into bickering.

At some point, San started unpacking the convenience store snacks he'd bought. Haruichi stole a bag of chips. Sawamura attempted to steal them from Haruichi.

He failed.

Several times.

Twenty minutes later, the room looked as though a small tornado had passed through it.
Sawamura was sprawled dramatically across his own bed clothes draped everywhere while San stood in front of him with crossed arms.

"Get up."

"No."

"We leave in fifteen minutes."

"I'll miss you guys."

"you're coming with us."

"no."

"yes."

Sawamura sighed heavily.

"This is *not* how I wanted my Friday night to go."

San grabbed a pillow and launched it directly at his face.

The impact earned him an offended squawk.

"You'll survive."

"Maybe physically."

"think of the hot guys in that club"

Haruichi looked up from his phone.

"You're literally smiling."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm suffering."

"Very convincingly."

Sawamura threw the pillow back.

Unfortunately, San caught it with one hand.

"Show off."

"Jealous."

"Absolutely."

Another ten minutes passed before the three finally started getting ready.

Sawamura changed shirts three separate times.

Not because he cared.

Definitely *not* because he cared.

The fact that both of his roommates kept staring at him every time he walked out of the bathroom was completely irrelevant.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" he demanded.

San's grin grew wider.

"Nothing."

"San."

"Nothing."

"You're smiling."

"I'm always smiling."

"That's terrifying."

Haruichi hid a laugh behind his hand.
Eventually, after much complaining and absolutely zero successful escape attempts, the trio left the dorm building.

The evening air was warm.

Summer had fully settled over the city, wrapping everything in a golden glow. The campus was alive with students heading out for the weekend, laughter echoing between buildings while music drifted from somewhere in the distance.

For a moment, Sawamura almost forgot he was being dragged somewhere against his will.

Almost.

Then he spotted the vehicle waiting by the curb.

He stopped walking.

"...What is that?"

San continued walking.

"A car."

"I know it's a car."

"Good, now tell your face."

"San."

"It's our ride."

Sawamura stared.

The black SUV looked expensive. Very expensive.

The kind of expensive that immediately made him nervous.

"Why does it look like it belongs to a CEO?"

"Because not everybody drives a bicycle."

"HEY."

Haruichi walked past him toward the vehicle.

"Eijun-kun, hurry up."

"No, because something feels wrong."

"What feels wrong?"

"Everything."

San snorted.

"You have the survival instincts of a frightened squirrel."

"And yet I'm usually right."

The driver stepped out of the vehicle.
Sawamura narrowed his eyes.
The man was dressed far too professionally for a simple night out.

"Oh, absolutely not." Sawamura says hypo eristically

San immediately burst out laughing.

"What now?"

"Why does he look like a bodyguard?"

The driver's shoulders started shaking suspiciously.

He was laughing.

At him.

"Haruichi, tell me you see it too."

"I see it."

"THANK YOU."

"I also think you're overreacting."

Sawamura gasped.

"Another betrayal."

Before he could continue his dramatic speech, San grabbed him by the shoulders and started steering him toward the car.

"Move."

"No."

"Move."

"I have rights."

"You lost them."

"That's not how rights work!"

The back door opened.

Haruichi was already seated inside.

Traitor.

"Get in."

Sawamura pointed at San.

"If I get murdered tonight, I'm haunting you."

"You say that every time we go out."

"And one day I'll be right."

Still grumbling, he climbed into the vehicle and dropped into the seat beside Haruichi.

The interior was somehow even nicer than the outside.

His suspicion immediately doubled.

"This is definitely rich people behavior."

San slid into the seat across from them.

"Can you stop profiling the car?"

"No."

The engine hummed to life.

Outside, campus slowly began to disappear as they pulled away from the curb.

Sawamura rested his head against the window, watching the familiar buildings fade into the distance while his friends continued arguing over music.

For the first time all evening, he relaxed.

Maybe tonight wouldn't be so bad.

Maybe San was right.

Maybe he could actually have fun.

A smile crossed San's face as he looked down at a new notification on his phone.

Sawamura didn't notice.

If he had, he probably would've demanded answers immediately.

Instead, he simply watched the city lights flicker to life beyond the glass.

Completely unaware that before the night was over, he was going to meet someone who would change everything.
