Work Text:

It was quiet. In the house, and in the room. Quiet and simple.

There’s a soft breath puffing against his ear, and it was slow enough to soothe. Arms around him, loose and heavy. The weight of them kept his chest from going fast. He tried to match his breath to the slowness.

Hickory fell asleep about an hour ago, well after their talk. They’d laid down while his vision was still blurring, and the world felt too much like it was saying to leave. After calming down some, he’d gotten his work clothes off. Hick did the buttons and Hunk moved his arms when told to.

It wasn’t his bed they were on, which was nice. For a while they considered pushing the two frames together but too much risk of someone seeing, asking questions. At that thought, he pushed his head into the crack between pillow and wall. The blankets smelled like Hick, the weight behind him felt like calm.

By now it had to be almost morning. Two, at least. He did fall asleep for a while there, but it just never stuck after something like this. He considered waking Hick up but the quiet felt better than trying to talk about it tonight.

Warm. Carefully, he pushed against the wall and further back into the bearhug. The breath stumbled for a moment, then sighed, and then he was being squeezed again. This was nice.

Earlier had been. Well. Earlier was something, but it was at home, and it was with Hick, and it was going to be alright. Hunk put his arms over the ones around him, holding tight. Tomorrow was a Saturday, and then it’d be Sunday when they’d have some of the morning home. He’d take tonight for all its worth, and wait until then.

The bed was tiny and cramped, and squished between Hick and the wall was a lot more comfortable than he had expected, but it was really just the weight. It made him think more about being there, and not getting so stuck in his head.

He took a deep breath and waited for Hickory to exhale first, breathing out when a sigh warmed his face. Earlier the pressure was all on the inside and awful, but it wasn’t so bad like this. This was just warm.

The dullness of the room did let him sleep, eventually, and it lasted almost the whole night. They clung on, both of them, all the while.

Notes:

they're very sweet to me, and against all odds I do have a longer story for them coming! it's about 2k words right now, but hopefully a little longer by the time I'm done. I know I keep saying "soon" but uh I don't have a good concept of time. it has been so many months. we're working on it

I was hoping to get more relationship development out there before posting established stuff but this needs to be aired while it's fresh. next time they'll be Worse

also if you have an idea for a kansas oneshot or anything, feel free to drop it in my inbox and I'll give it a look
