“I confess, I do not understand why I have been compelled to come along on this trip.” Spock resisted the urge to cross his arms. Given the amusement already present on McCoy’s face, doing so would result in an accusation of frustration. “I am Vulcan. As my partners, you are both no doubt aware that I do not require rest in the form of ‘shore leave’.”
“Doctor’s orders,” Kirk said, jerking a thumb towards McCoy.
“Gee, thanks a lot for blaming everything on me.” Judging by his grin, McCoy was content to take the blame for this situation. “But Jim’s right. It is doctor’s orders. I know you don’t need shore leave in the same way we do, but you do need rest.”
“I do not consider shore leave to be rest, as you are well aware.”
“Well, no one says you’ve gotta go run around the beach with Jim and me. You can just sprawl here in our room. Or, you could sprawl on the beach!”
Spock gave a small sigh. “I do not sprawl, Doctor.”
McCoy chuckled, shaking his head. “Well, then, you can sit in a dignified fashion on the beach.”
“Excellent advice, Bones.” Kirk plunged a hand into his luggage and emerged with striped swim trunks in hand. “Come on, Spock. Wouldn’t it be nice to get some sun?”
Spock had little interest in “getting sun”, as he much preferred to be on a starship. Preferably working on an interesting problem.
However, he was interested in spending time with his partners. Thus, he accompanied them to the beach, whereupon they hurled themselves into the water while laughing madly.
Spock did not understand the appeal of this. Still, he sat on the sand. He did not require shore leave, but watching his partners enjoy leave was pleasant.
