to love in the 21st century

Summary:

Modern romance is brutal because nobody wants to say how they feel first. Gemini and Fourth are university roommates sharing a tiny, sunlit apartment. Their daily lives are completely blurred together—they automatically cook for two, borrow each other's oversized sweaters, and naturally gravitate toward each other on the couch. They cross every line of intimacy, yet they hide behind the safety of modern dating culture, where giving something a label means risking everything.

Notes:

Welcome, everyone, to this new GeminiFourth AU!

This story is deeply inspired by Lyn Lapid’s song "to love in the 21st century." It focuses on the brutal reality of our current timeline’s modern dating culture, where situationships are common, and some people prefer it that way—entirely oblivious to the other person's silent suffering.

you will notice some lyrical reference to some famous pop songs of the 21st century, integrated to the storyline for an unique touch.

enjoy!

Chapter 1: :)

Chapter Text

The crushing, lonely reality of modern "situationship culture."

It captures the pain of being deeply intertwined with someone physically and socially,

while remaining completely disconnected emotionally because of a lack of communication.

One is entirely unequipped for the brutal, transactional landscape of modern romance. When he falls into the endless rabbit hole of devotion, he surrenders completely, leaving no part of himself guarded against the descent. Every fleeting touch against his skin, every quiet habit observed in the dark, and every shared morning becomes a permanent engraving upon the canvas of his soul. He binds himself to the other like a fierce glue, anchoring his entire identity to a ghost. Yet, without the solid gravity of a name, he lives in constant, suffocating terror that everything defining him could easily be erased in an instant—dissolved into a clean slate, like strong adhesive met with a curated liquid.

The other operates within a vastly different frequency, navigating their world through a language of quiet devotion. He pours his love generously into concrete actions—cooking dual meals, wrapping blankets over shivering shoulders, and staying close—yet he firmly refuses to anchor those gestures with words. In his mind, he genuinely believed that this silent care was enough to bridge the gap. He viewed the modern concept of formal dating as an absolute curse, a legalistic framework that would inevitably shatter the fragile, beautiful paradise they had built in the dark. He desperately wanted them to remain forever fluid and unlabeled, safe from the expectations of the world. But love cannot survive in a vacuum, and his protective silence ultimately corroded the very foundation he was trying to save, affecting them overall.

"What are we?"

"Just roommates."

"Roommates that act like lovers?"

"Call it what you want."
