The Pursuit

Chapter Text

The silence in the corridor was heavy, thick with the lingering echo of Mok’s cold obedience.

“If it is boss’s order, I will follow.”

The words had left Mok’s lips in the bathroom like an iron curtain dropping between them, heavy and absolute.

Rome had turned his back then, stepping out into the dim hallway without looking back, his jaw clamped shut so tight his teeth ached. He had assumed that would be it. He had assumed Mok, ever the disciplined shadow, would take the command, swallow the poison, and fall back into ranks.

He was wrong.

Rome barely had time to cross the threshold of his private room before the heavy timber door behind him swished inward and clicked firmly into place.

The distinct, metallic clack of the manual deadbolt turning sent a sudden spike of adrenaline straight to Rome’s chest.

He stopped in the middle of the carpeted floor, his back still turned, his posture rigid.

"Unbolt the door, Mok," Rome said. His voice was low, devoid of its usual playful lilt, scraped raw down to a flat, command-line tone.

"No."

The single syllable was flat, steady, and entirely devoid of the deference Mok usually maintained. There was no sir, no lingering softness of the lover who, just hours ago, had breathed against the nape of Rome’s neck in the early morning quiet.

Rome let out a slow, controlled breath through his nose. He refused to turn around. He knew better than to turn around. If he looked at Mok right now—looked at the quiet hurt behind those dark eyes, at the stiff line of his shoulders—the fragile, razor-thin barrier he had spent days building around his own heart would shatter on the spot.

"I gave you an order," Rome said, taking a deliberate step toward his desk. He reached out, his fingers brushing the smooth leather of an unopened briefing folder, seeking an anchor. "You have to return with P'kian now. You answer to my brother."

Behind him, the soft rustle of Mok’s jacket signaled his movement. He didn't retreat toward the door. He stepped deeper into the room.

"You don't get to do that," Mok said. His voice wasn't raised, but it carried an edge that sliced through the room's quiet. "You don't get to drop a bomb in a bathroom, wash your hands, and walk away like you just signed off on a shipment of weapons."

"It's settled, Mok," Rome muttered, opening the folder and staring blindly at the white sheets of paper inside. The printed text bled together into meaningless dark lines. "The decision was made the moment dad said I have to take over as the leader. The family needs a head, P'kian is stepping out, and I am stepping up. It requires a clean break."

"A clean break," Mok repeated. A bitter, short breath escaped him—a ghost of a laugh that contained zero humor. "Is that what you call telling me you regret falling in love with me? A clean break?"
Rome’s fingers dug into the edge of the desk. The leather groaned under the pressure. Don't turn around. Do not look at him.

"I spoke logically," Rome said, forcing his tone to remain ice-cold, methodical, alien even to his own ears. "If I had known the exact timeline of the transition, I would not have allowed personal feelings to compromise my position. Or yours. A leader with an obvious attachment is a leader with a visible target on his chest. And a bodyguard who is emotionally compromised is a dead bodyguard. It was an error in judgment. I am rectifying it."

The silence stretched again, but this time it was tense, vibrating with an energy that felt almost volatile.

Mok took three measured steps forward. The soles of his dress shoes sank quietly into the plush rug, stopping just a few feet behind Rome’s right shoulder. Rome could feel the heat radiating off him, could smell the sharp, familiar scent of his cologne mixed with the faint metallic tang of the rain outside.

"Look at me," Mok said softly.

"I am busy, Mok."

"Look at me, Rome."

The use of his bare name—not an honorific, not a title—struck Rome like a physical blow. He squeezed his eyes shut for a fraction of a second before opening them again, staring resolutely at the unread documents on his desk.

"You have two minutes to open the door and start packing," Rome said, tightening his grip on the mahogany edge until his knuckles turned ghost-white. "If you are not at your post by the turn of the hour, I will consider it a breach of contract."

"Look me in the eye and say it again."
Mok’s voice dropped lower, pulling taut like a wire stretched to its absolute limit.

"Look at me and tell me I was an error in judgment. Tell me to my face that you can just wipe it clear because you inherited a title you didn't even ask for."

Rome didn't move. He stood like a statue, frozen in his own iron-clad denial, relying on the silence to drive Mok away.

He waited for the heavy footsteps, waited for the sound of the deadbolt sliding back, waited for the door to open and close, signaling that Mok had finally accepted the cold, miserable reality of the life they were trapped in.

He waited, but the door never opened.
Instead, the air in the room seemed to contract, heavy with the silent promise that Mok was not going anywhere—and that the wall Rome had built between them was about to be torn down piece by piece.

The air in the bedroom grew claustrophobic, thick with an unbearable tension. Rome stayed rooted to the spot, his palms pressed against the polished mahogany of his desk, staring blankly at the dark wood grain. He was breathing through his nose in slow, deliberate cycles, counting the seconds in his head, desperately waiting for the sound of Mok’s footsteps retreating toward the locked door.

It didn't come.

Instead, the soft, rhythmic rustle of fabric signaled Mok’s movement. Mok didn't back away. He didn't turn the deadbolt. He closed the distance between them with quiet, deliberate precision until he was standing directly behind Rome, so close that the heat radiating from his chest brushed against Rome’s shoulder blades.

"You really think you're good at this, don't you?" Mok spoke softly, his voice running like cool glass over the tense silence of the room.

Rome didn't answer. He tightened his grip on the edge of the desk, his knuckles stark white against the dark wood. "I told you to clear your belongings, Mok.

You're dismissed."

"Dismissed," Mok repeated. A low, bitter chuckle escaped his throat—a sound entirely devoid of warmth. "Listen to you. Using corporate terms and security protocols to cover up the fact that you can't even look me in the eye."

"I am acting in the best interest of the family," Rome said, forcing his voice into a flat, monotonous drone. "And in your best interest. As the leader of the Arseni family, my primary responsibility is eliminating unnecessary vulnerabilities. You know how this world works. Attachments are weaknesses. If I keep you by my side as my personal guard, every rival faction, every ambitious underboss, and every enemy we have will see you as the easiest way to pull my strings."

"Don't hide behind the family, Rome," Mok snapped, his voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp and unyielding.

"And don't you dare talk to me about security protocols like I haven't been standing two steps behind you, taking bullets and clearing sightlines since I have been Khun thee's bodyguard. You aren't doing this because of logistics. You're doing this because you're a coward."

The word hung in the air, heavy and lethal.

Rome’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle in his cheek twitched, but he kept his face turned away, staring rigidly at the wall opposite his desk. "Calling me names won't change the command. Leave the key on the table and report to P' Kian."

"Look at me when I'm talking to you!" Mok slammed his hand down on the wooden desk right next to Rome’s grip.

The loud crack of palm meeting hard mahogany vibrated through the room, making the leather-bound folders jump. "Look at me, Rome!"

Rome flinched slightly, but he didn't turn. He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, swallowing down the sudden, violent surge of emotion threatening to tear through his throat. Do not look at him. If you look at him, you lose.

"I don't have to look at you to give an order," Rome muttered coldly.

Mok leaned in closer, his breath warm against the side of Rome’s neck, mocking and dangerously sharp. "Look at the great heir. The new master of the Arseni empire. So powerful, so terrifying... yet he can't even face his own shadow in a locked room. Is this what leadership looks like to you? Running away behind a wall of security clearance the second things get difficult?"

"I am not running away," Rome growled through gritted teeth, his breath shortening.

"Then what do you call this?" Mok taunted, his tone dripping with quiet venom. He stepped sideways, sliding into Rome’s peripheral vision, forcing Rome to acknowledge his presence. "You stood in that bathroom and told me that if you had known you were going to inherit the seat, you would have never fallen in love with me. You framed it like a mistake. Like a bad investment you regret making."

Mok took another half-step, crowding Rome against the edge of the desk, refusing to give him a single inch of breathing room.

"Tell me, Rome," Mok continued, his dark eyes burning with a mixture of raw hurt and dangerous provocation. "Was it really that easy for you? Did you just wake up this morning, and decide that what we had was inconvenient? Did you turn off your feelings like flipping a light switch, or were you lying to me the entire time?"

"Watch your tongue, Mok," Rome warned, his voice shaking with suppression. "You are pushing your limits."

"What limits?" Mok shot back instantly, stepping even closer until their shoulders were practically touching. He looked down at Rome with an expression of cold defiance. "What are you going to do, order your guards to drag me out? Have me executed for insubordination? Go ahead. Issue the command. Show me how ruthless the new head of the family really is."

"Mok..."

"Or maybe you can't," Mok taunted, leaning down slightly so his face was level with Rome’s. His voice dropped to a lethal whisper, cutting straight into Rome’s deepest insecurities. "Maybe the truth is that you're pathetic. You take the crown, and the very first thing you do is throw away the only person who actually gives a damn about you—not as an Arseni, not as a boss, but as Rome. You're so terrified of losing control that you'd rather destroy us yourself before anyone else gets the chance."

"Shut up," Rome breathed, his chest heaving as his heart hammered violently against his ribs.

"Did you ever love me at all?" Mok pressed, relentless, digging the knife deeper into the wound. "Or was I just a convenient shield? A loyal dog to keep your bed warm while you waited for your brother to step down? Tell me, Rome. Was any of it real, or were you just playing a game until you got tired of the toy?"

The words tore through Rome’s iron restraint like a blade through silk.

Every suppressed fear, every ounce of guilt, and the overwhelming, agonizing weight of trying to protect the only person he cared about while being called a monster for it combusted into an explosive, blinding rage.

Rome snapped.

With a guttural snarl, Rome’s hand shot out, grabbing Mok by his shirt. He didn't just push him—he launched his entire body weight forward, twisting Mok around and driving him backward with violent, unstoppable force.

Mok’s back slammed hard against the heavy wooden wall beside the door with a dull, echoing crash. The impact rattled the framed art hanging nearby, but before Mok could even register the shock, Rome was right there, crowding into his space, pinning him against the wall with his hands shoved hard against Mok’s chest.

"Don't you ever say that!" Rome roared, his face inches from Mok’s, his breathing ragged, wild, and completely out of control.

The cold, calculating leader mask was gone, shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. In its place was the raw, tempestuous storm of the man Mok knew underneath—furious, terrified, and burning with an intensity that threatened to consume them both.
Rome gripped Mok’s collar so tightly his fingers cramped, forcing Mok to stand flat against the wall. Rome’s eyes were bloodshot, dark with a terrifying mix of fury and agony as he glared down into Mok’s calm, unblinking gaze.

"You think this is easy for me?!" Rome’s voice cracked, vibrating with a desperate, raw edge. "You think I want to wake up in an empty bed every morning?! You think I want to hand you over to P' Kian like you're just some piece of property?!"

Mok didn't flinch. He didn't try to break Rome’s grip. He stayed pinned against the wall, his chest rising and falling against Rome’s hands, staring directly into the storm he had deliberately unleashed.

"Then why are you doing it?" Mok demanded, his voice low and firm despite the physical restraint holding him down.

"Because they will kill you!" Rome screamed into the tiny space between their faces, the confession tearing out of his chest like a physical hemorrhage.

"The moment I sit in that chair, every target in the country aligns on my forehead! If you stand beside me, they won't shoot at me first—they'll shoot at you to break me! They will take you, they will bleed you, and they will use your dead body to make me crawl!"
Rome leaned heavier into Mok, pinning him flat, his forehead almost resting against Mok’s as his body trembled with unrestrained emotion.

"I can survive a bullet in my own shoulder, Mok," Rome whispered, his voice breaking into a ragged, painful rasp. "I can survive the war, the politics, and the blood. But I cannot, I will not watch you die because I was selfish enough to keep you in my shadow. So do not stand there and tell me I didn't love you. Don't you dare lie to my face and say it was a game."

The heavy echo of Rome’s roar died down, leaving the air between them thick with sharp, volatile static.

Rome’s hands remained twisted rigidly in the fabric of Mok’s lapels, pinning him hard against the wood-paneled wall of the private study. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, face inches from Mok’s, eyes blazing with raw fury and barely contained panic. The argument over Mok’s insistence on a dangerous solo mission had detonated into something far more primal.

Mok didn’t blink. He didn’t flinch. A slow, cold smirk curled at the corner of his mouth, calculated to shred the last threads of Rome’s control.

"Look at you," Mok said, voice low and dripping with disdain. "Shouting like a boy playing dress-up in his father’s suit. You think slamming me against a wall makes you look dangerous? You think raising your voice makes you a leader?"

Rome’s breath hitched. "Mok—"

"You’re pathetic, Rome," Mok cut in, leaning forward until their noses nearly brushed. "You yell about keeping me safe, but all I see is a coward who needs an excuse to push away the one person who knows how weak you really are. You aren’t protecting me. You’re terrified everyone else will see right through you too."

"Shut your mouth," Rome growled, shoving Mok harder into the paneling.

"Make me," Mok taunted, eyes flashing defiance. "You want to act like the big, ruthless Arseni boss? Then do something about it. Otherwise get your hands off me and let me walk out to someone who actually knows how to take what he wants."

The final spark ignited.

Rome slammed him back against the wall with bruising force. His right hand shot up, clamping around Mok’s throat—tight enough to pin his head back, not enough to fully choke. "You think you can talk to me like that?!" he snarled, voice a dark rasp. "You think you can mock me and just leave?!"

Mok’s pulse hammered under Rome’s palm, but he smirked breathlessly. "Still… all talk. Prove me wrong."

Rome crushed their mouths together in a violent collision. Teeth clashed. He bit Mok’s lower lip hard, drawing blood. Mok gasped at the metallic taste but fought back instantly, grabbing Rome’s hair and yanking him closer, biting his tongue in retaliation. Their kiss was pure aggression—tongues battling, lips bruising, saliva and blood mixing.

Rome ripped open Mok’s shirt. Buttons scattered across the floor. He shoved the fabric off Mok’s shoulders, hands rough and demanding as he yanked Mok’s belt free in one violent jerk. Pants and underwear were shoved down to Mok’s ankles. Rome spun him around, slamming his chest against the wall.

"Stay," Rome ordered, kicking Mok’s legs apart as far as the tangled fabric allowed.

He reached into the nearby desk drawer—where they kept supplies for nights like this—and grabbed the bottle of lube. No gentleness. No teasing. He slicked his fingers liberally, the wet sound loud in the tense silence.

Without warning, Rome pressed two thick, lube-coated fingers against Mok’s hole and pushed inside in one forceful thrust.

Mok hissed sharply at the sudden stretch, the cool slickness easing the way but the intrusion still rough. Rome twisted his wrist immediately, scissoring the fingers apart, stretching him open with zero mercy. He pumped them deep and fast, the lewd squelch of lube filling the room.

"Still running that fucking mouth?" Rome growled, adding a third finger brutally. He fucked them in and out with punishing strokes, curling harshly to nail Mok’s prostate.

Mok groaned, the sound strained, but pushed back against the fingers. "Is that… all you’ve got? Feels like you’re still hesitating, boss."

Rome snarled and drove his fingers deeper, scissoring wider, opening Mok up roughly. The lube made everything slick and messy, dripping down Mok’s thighs as Rome worked him open with aggressive efficiency. He added more lube straight from the bottle, letting it run messily over his hand and Mok’s skin.

When Mok’s hole was stretched and glistening, Rome yanked his fingers out. He freed his own cock—thick, flushed dark, and leaking—then coated it generously with more lube, stroking himself roughly. The excess dripped onto the floor.

He lined up and slammed inside in one brutal, lube-slick thrust.

Mok cried out, the sound raw as Rome buried himself to the hilt. The stretch burned despite the prep and lube, but the slick glide let Rome drive deep immediately. He didn’t pause. He pulled back nearly to the tip and slammed in again, setting a punishing rhythm—hard, angry strokes that slammed Mok’s hips into the wall with every thrust.

Skin slapped loudly against skin. Rome’s grip on Mok’s hip was bruising, the other hand fisted in his hair, yanking his head back. "Look at you," he panted, voice thick with rage and lust. "Taking my cock so easily after running your mouth. Your hole is greedy as fuck."

Mok laughed breathlessly, the sound breaking into a moan as Rome nailed his prostate. "You’re… still holding back. Scared you’ll actually break me? Or scared you’ll come too fast because you’re so fucking desperate?"

Rome’s response was to fuck him harder. He pulled Mok’s hips back slightly for a better angle and drove in with relentless force. The lube made every thrust smooth and obscenely wet, squelching loudly with each deep plunge.

He reached around, wrapping a slick hand around Mok’s leaking cock, stroking him with rough, demanding pulls. No mercy. Just firm friction designed to overwhelm.

Mok’s thighs shook. His defiant taunts dissolved into curses and broken moans.

"Fuck—Rome—harder—"

Rome smacked Mok’s ass hard, leaving a red handprint, then again on the other cheek. Each impact made Mok clench tighter around his cock. The desk nearby rattled as Rome railed him against the wall.

"Still think I’m a coward?" Rome growled, biting down on Mok’s shoulder.

Mok turned his head, cheek scraping wood, eyes glazed but defiant. "Prove… you’re not."

Rome pulled out abruptly, spun Mok to face him, and hooked one of his legs high over his arm. He slammed back inside, folding Mok open. Face to face now, they glared at each other as Rome fucked up into him with powerful thrusts. Mok’s back scraped the wall. Their mouths crashed together again—biting, devouring, punishing.

Mok’s nails raked down Rome’s back, tearing through his shirt. Rome fucked him harder, the lube ensuring a relentless, slippery glide that let him go impossibly deep.

He carried Mok the short distance to the heavy oak desk, sweeping papers off with one arm. He bent Mok over it face-down and drove back in, pounding him mercilessly. The desk creaked under the assault. Rome poured more lube directly over where they were joined, letting it run messily as he railed Mok even faster.

Mok came first—hard—with a strangled shout, cum spilling across the desk in thick ropes as his hole clenched rhythmically around Rome’s cock. Rome fucked him through it without slowing, the overstimulation making Mok whimper and twitch.

Rome followed moments later, burying himself deep and spilling inside with a guttural roar. He kept grinding through the pulses, filling Mok until lube and cum leaked out around his shaft with every shallow thrust.

They stayed locked together, panting. Rome pressed his forehead to Mok’s sweat-damp back, the anger slowly ebbing as their heartbeats thundered against each other. Cum and lube leaked messily around Rome’s softening cock, still buried deep inside Mok. The study smelled of sweat, sex, and the faint metallic tang of blood from their bitten lips.

For a few seconds, silence hung between them—raw, heavy, almost peaceful.

Then Mok chuckled. Low. Mocking. Deliberately provocative.

"That’s it?" he rasped, voice hoarse from shouting and moaning. "One decent fuck against the wall and the big Arseni boss is already spent? Pathetic. I thought you were supposed to be ruthless now. Guess the title really did go to the wrong head."

Rome’s body tensed instantly. The brief calm shattered.

Mok continued, pushing back against him with a filthy roll of his hips, clenching deliberately around Rome’s cock. "Or maybe you’re scared. Scared that if you actually let go, you’ll prove me right. That you’re still just a scared little boy hiding behind your father’s name. Go on, Rome. Prove you can fuck me properly this time. Or are you going to tap out like a coward again?"

The words hit exactly as intended.

Rome’s eyes darkened to black. He pulled out abruptly, making Mok hiss at the sudden emptiness. In one fluid, angry motion, he hauled Mok off the desk, throwing him over his shoulder like he weighed nothing. Mok laughed—sharp, taunting—as Rome carried him out of the study and down the short hallway to the master bedroom.

"Finally," Mok sneered, slapping Rome’s back. "Trying to find a softer surface so you don’t embarrass yourself again?"

Rome kicked the bedroom door open and threw Mok onto the massive bed. Mok landed on his back, bouncing once, legs sprawled. Before he could push up, Rome was on him, crawling over his body like a predator.

"Still talking," Rome growled. He grabbed Mok’s ankles, yanking his legs apart and shoving them toward his chest, folding him in half. "Let’s fix that."

He snatched the bottle of lube from the nightstand—always kept within reach—and poured a generous amount directly onto his fingers and over Mok’s already-used hole. The cool liquid dripped messily. Rome didn’t tease. He shoved three fingers back inside in one rough thrust, twisting and pumping them immediately.

Mok arched with a sharp gasp, the overstimulation making his spent cock twitch. "Fuck—greedy, aren’t you?"

Rome scissored his fingers viciously, stretching Mok open again while his other hand came down hard in the first spank—right across Mok’s exposed ass cheek. The loud crack echoed through the room.

Mok jerked, a startled moan escaping him. "Is that supposed to shut me up? Harder, Rome. Or do you hit like you fuck—weak?"

Another sharp smack landed on the other cheek, harder this time. Rome’s palm left a bright red imprint as he continued finger-fucking him with lube-slick thrusts. He alternated spanking and stretching, turning Mok’s ass a deepening shade of red with each heavy slap. The impacts made Mok clench tightly around his fingers every time.

"Look at you," Rome snarled, adding a fourth finger and forcing Mok wider. "Spreading your legs and dripping lube like a slut while you run your mouth. You want me to break you? Fine."

Mok’s eyes flashed with dark heat. Even folded and pinned, he smirked. "Break me? You couldn’t break a promise. Come on, boss—show me the big bad Arseni heir. Or should I go find someone who actually knows how to—"

Rome cut him off with a brutal series of spanks—five in rapid succession, each harder than the last. Mok’s taunt dissolved into a broken moan, his ass burning bright red. Rome yanked his fingers out, slicked his rock-hard cock with more lube, and slammed inside in one punishing thrust.

The new angle on the bed let him go impossibly deep. Rome set a brutal pace immediately—long, powerful strokes that rocked the entire bed. Every thrust was accompanied by the wet squelch of lube and the sharp sound of skin meeting skin.

He kept Mok folded beneath him, hands gripping the backs of his thighs hard enough to bruise as he pounded down into him. "Still got something to say?" Rome demanded, punctuating the question with an especially deep thrust and another heavy spank on Mok’s ass.

Mok gasped, nails digging into Rome’s arms. "Y-Yeah… you fuck like you lead—sloppy and desperate—ah, fuck!"

Rome growled and unleashed a flurry of spanks while never stopping his relentless thrusts. The bed creaked loudly. Lube and cum from the first round smeared across the sheets with every movement. Rome’s hips snapped forward with punishing force, his cock dragging perfectly against Mok’s prostate on every stroke.

Mok’s cock hardened again despite having come earlier. It slapped against his own stomach with every brutal thrust, leaking steadily.

Rome shifted suddenly, pulling out and flipping Mok onto his stomach. He yanked Mok’s hips up into the air, forcing him into a deep arch with his chest pressed to the mattress. Another generous pour of lube ran down Mok’s crack. Rome thrust back inside immediately, gripping Mok’s hips and railing him from behind.

The position was perfect for spanking. Rome’s hand came down again and again—rhythmic, heavy smacks that turned Mok’s already-red ass even darker. Each impact made Mok clench deliciously around his cock.

"Go on," Rome panted, voice rough. "Keep provoking me. Tell me how weak I am while I fuck you stupid."

Mok turned his head to the side, cheek pressed into the ruined sheets, eyes glassy but mouth still defiant. "You’re… still pretending… to be in control—fuck, right there—while everyone outside this room knows you’re just playing the part."

Rome snarled and spanked him harder, faster, never breaking rhythm. The stinging pain mixed with the deep pleasure of Rome’s cock pounding into him made Mok’s moans louder, more desperate. His second orgasm built rapidly.

Rome reached under, wrapping a slick hand around Mok’s cock and stroking him roughly. "Come on then. Come while I wreck you. Show me how much you love getting put in your place."

Mok came with a choked shout, spilling over Rome’s fist and the sheets. His hole spasmed hard, milking Rome’s cock. Rome fucked him through it without mercy, the overstimulation making Mok whimper and shake.

But Rome wasn’t done.

He pulled out, flipped Mok onto his back again, and pushed his legs wide apart. More lube. Another deep thrust. This time he leaned down, chest to chest, staring directly into Mok’s eyes as he fucked him with slow, grinding, punishing rolls of his hips.

"Look at me," Rome demanded, voice low and dangerous. One hand came down in another firm spank on Mok’s thigh. "Look at me while I ruin you."

Mok’s eyes were hazy, lips parted, but the smirk lingered. "Still… not impressed."

Rome kissed him brutally—biting, claiming—while picking up speed again.
Spank after spank landed on Mok’s ass and thighs whenever Rome shifted position. They were both sweating, bodies slick, the room filled with the wet sounds of lube, skin slapping, and their ragged breathing and taunts.

Rome finally came with a deep groan, burying himself to the hilt and flooding Mok again. He kept grinding through the aftershocks, making sure every drop stayed inside.

They collapsed together, limbs tangled, chests heaving. Mok’s ass was a mess of red handprints, lube, and cum. Rome’s back bore deep scratch marks.

For a long moment, only heavy breathing filled the room.

The air was thick, carrying the sharp scent of sweat, metallic blood, and spent adrenaline.

Rome was pressed against Mok , his forehead buried into the crook of Mok’s neck. His weight was heavy, unyielding, his breathing gradually slowing from a desperate gasp to a low, rhythmic shudder. His fingers, still tangled tightly into Mok’s waist, slowly unclasped, his muscles shaking from the sheer exhaustion of the violence they had just shared.

He pulled out of Mok and both of them fell on the bed.

"Rome," Mok called out softly, his voice raspy from shouting, stripped of its previous hostility.

Rome didn't turn around. "Go to sleep, Mok. It’s late."

Mok closed his eyes. He believed, in the quiet fog of his rising exhaustion, that the point had been made. They had torn each other apart, exposed the raw, bleed-it-all-out truth under the surface, and burnt away the artificial distance Rome was trying to build. He believed Rome was sitting there because he had nowhere left to run.

Within minutes, the heavy weight of physical and emotional fatigue pulled Mok under. His breathing evened out, slipping into a deep, dreamless sleep.
In the darkness of the room, the silence stretched.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty.

Rome didn't move an inch. He sat frozen on the edge of the mattress, listening to the steady, quiet rhythm of Mok’s breathing behind him. Every soft exhale from Mok felt like a physical weight pressing down on Rome’s chest, suffocating him.

Slowly, carefully, Rome turned his head and looked back over his shoulder.

Mok was fast asleep, his face turned sideways into the pillow, his dark hair messy across his forehead. In the dim light filtering through the window, the harsh, dark bruises on his collarbone and shoulder stood out like ink on parchment.

Rome’s expression didn't soften. If anything, it turned colder, hollower, settled into a terrifying, absolute clarity.

He looked at the marks he had left on Mok’s skin. He looked at the man who had stood toe-to-toe with him, who had bled for him, who had provoked him into a monster just to force him to feel something. Mok was loyal to a fault, brave to the point of self-destruction, and entirely blind to the sheer magnitude of the meat grinder Rome was about to step into.

“You think slamming me against a wall makes you look dangerous?”

Mok was right. Rome wasn't dangerous yet. He was just angry, terrified, and weak enough to let his emotions drag them both into a bedroom when he should have been securing the perimeter. Tonight proved it. If a enemy had pushed those exact same buttons, Rome would have burned everything down just to protect his own pride. He couldn't afford that weakness. He couldn't afford Mok.

Because as long as Mok was anywhere near the center of the Arseni empire, he was a leverage point that could tear Rome apart from the inside out.

Rome slid his legs over the side of the bed, moving with the quiet, ghost-like precision of someone trained to walk through danger without making a sound. He didn't make a single noise as his feet touched the hardwood floor.

He stood over the bed for a long moment, looking down at Mok’s sleeping form.

Rome didn't reach out to touch him. He didn't brush the hair out of Mok’s face. He knew that if he touched him now—if he felt the warmth of Mok’s skin under his fingers one last time—the resolve in his chest would crumble into dust.
Instead, Rome turned his back.

He walked over to his closet, pulling out a tailored dark suit jacket, slipping his arms into the sleeves, and buttoning it with precise, methodical movements. He strapped his leather shoulder holster over his chest, checking the slide of his firearm with a quiet, metallic clack before locking it into place under his coat. He adjusted his cuffs, his face an unreadable, expressionless mask.

Rome stood there for one final breath, watching Mok’s chest rise and fall in the quiet dark.

"I told you," Rome whispered into the dark room, his voice barely a breath, completely devoid of warmth. "If I knew I was going to be the leader, I wouldn't have fallen in love with you."

He turned on his heel and left.
