Yeosang’s always been a bit sentimental. Wet, his uncle used to call him. The remains of his friends are impossible to get rid of. Unlike the aforementioned uncle, who when dead, was promptly thrown in the river. But Yeosang’s dearest friends—he carries them with him. In his heart, and in his memory, and in his garden. And San’s skull is in the house, holding open the door to his and Jongho’s bedroom.
Jongho had been squeamish about the skull door-stopper initially. Which, fair. Alive-San never would’ve stayed still for so long. But the sun shone, and the snow fell, and Jongho acclimatised, and the white-shine of San became a comfort of sorts. Yeosang is sentimental.

Summary
The people of the village told tales of humans with tail fins instead of legs who were blessed with voices from the heavens. Just off the coast of the cape in Jongho’s town, where the rocks jutted out from the water, they were said to linger. Perched up on the tall rocks in order for their angelic voices to carry out into the sea. Sailors were warned not to go near the cape as even a whisper of their song could bring peril.
Jongho discovered there might be more to the stories than he once thought.

Every seafarer knows that mermaids are a commodity in black markets. Their flesh holds power beyond what humans can comprehend. If consumed, a mermaid will give its attributes to whoever has eaten them. Their tears are said to heal and eating enough blood and meat is said to grant immortality, but Hongjoong wouldn’t know about that. He’s far more interested in consuming the tongue and language center of the brain so as to communicate with the beasts at the bottom of the sea.
With the power of mermaid speech, Hongjoong plans to leech their secrets from them to better fish them up. But it’s only a great sense of unease Hongjoong gains when he catches a mermaid with stars in his eyes and discovers the creatures are far more human than what he has been told.
