Summary
“For someone who claims not to like thinking,” Edwin says, raising an eyebrow, “you do a remarkably good job of it.”
Charles laughs. “Tell that to my old teachers, mate.”
“If they disagree, then they can’t be very qualified.” Edwin says this simply, like it’s just a fact of life. Like it’s plainly obvious that if anyone thinks Charles is stupid, it’s they who are at fault.
Or: Charles grew up poor and is likely to stay that away, his job at the magic store notwithstanding. By the time he meets Edwin, he's decided that he wants a new life. In between figuring out what's up with the mysterious wish-granting pigeons, and whether he can go to the Royal Ball, Edwin makes him want to take a chance on being happy as well.

Summary
Loving Edwin was the easiest thing in the world. Charles got so used to it that he could sometimes go months without thinking about it, until Edwin did something kind or charming or literally just stood there catching the light in exactly the right way, and it would hit Charles all over again, like getting socked in the face. It certainly made for some interesting decades together.
Or: Charles falls first. Edwin falls harder. Surprisingly little changes.

For half a second, Edwin’s vision was filled with a beautiful, ethereal sight. Charles had turned his face up in surprise, eyes wide and lips parted, and his brown eyes reflected the cloud of golden shimmers hovering above him. He was bathed in a gentle light, surrounded by a galaxy of tiny stars.
Then the dust began to settle onto his skin, and Charles’ face contorted. He clapped his hands over his eyes, pressing hard, and drew in a harsh gasp through gritted teeth.
“Charles?” Edwin shouted.

He’s the best friend I’ve ever had, Edwin often thought.
I would do anything in the world for him, Edwin thought just as often.
He’s so beautiful, Edwin caught himself thinking once, just before he spent nine days obsessively reading about every supernatural phenomenon he could think of that might cause madness in a dead person.
Edwin wanted to say something like, that’s brilliant and you’re brilliant and I’m so glad you’re still here with me. He wasn’t sure how to say any of that, though, so instead he said, “Well reasoned, Charles.”
Clarity hit Edwin with the force of a cricket bat swung at his chest, and his dead, metaphorical heart almost shattered on impact.
Charles liked hearing him read. He liked the lantern. Charles had died as a child, freezing cold and forgotten in a dark attic, murdered by other children he called his friends, and he called that night not bad at all just because Edwin was there keeping him company. He specifically asked for reminders of that night because he found them comforting.
Some load-bearing part of Edwin’s psyche collapsed under the weight of those words.
Watching the tension bleed out of his expression made Edwin feel like the dragon again, itching to spit fire at anyone and anything that even looked at its treasure with ill intent.
