The weapons the bandits had were not ones Nicholas and Joseph were used to.
They were all carrying rifles, which Nicholas and Joseph knew of but had never used or experienced. It made Nicholas nervous, going after people with largely unfamiliar weapons while the two of them only had their swords, but Joseph had promised he would be careful and made Nicholas promise the same. However, they hadn’t expected all of the bandits to have guns, and that made both of them even more nervous.
