This dread of the mother is so overwhelming because there is combined with it an intense dread of castration by the father. The destructive tendencies whose object is the womb are also directed with their full oral- and anal-sadistic intensity against the father’s penis, which is supposed to be located there. It is upon his penis that the dread of castration by the father is focussed in this phase. Thus the femininity-phase is characterized by anxiety relating to the womb and the father’s penis, and this anxiety subjects the boy to the tyranny of a super-ego which devours, dismembers and castrates and is formed from the image of father and mother alike.
